Every player with a passing TD, rushing TD, and receiving TD in the same game

With Christian McCaffrey’s triple-crown day, there are 11 players pro football history to throw, run, and catch a touchdown in the same game. Here they all are.

On Sunday, San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey did something that hasn’t been done in pro football in 17 years. McCaffrey threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to receiver Brandon Aiyuk with 12:10 left in the first half.

Then, with 1:51 left in the third quarter, McCaffrey extended his short route as Jimmy Garoppolo rolled around to avoid pressure, coming up with this great nine-yard touchdown catch.

And THEN, with 12:07 left in the game, McCaffrey bashed it in for this one-yard touchdown run.

It’s been since 2005 since any player has touchdowns in all three ways in a single game, and only 11 players have done it in pro football history. Who else has pulled off this impressive feat?

Sean Payton jokes about trading for Taysom Hill ‘in a year or two’

Sean Payton has jokes. During an appearance on Colin Cowherd’s show, he said he’d be happy to trade for Taysom Hill once he’s running his own team again:

[sendtonews_embed video_id=”ftMVcVh9df-2289431-7498″]

Oh, so now he has jokes. In the least surprising news of the day, former New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton said Monday that he’d be happy to trade for Taysom Hill once he’s running his own team again — fresh off the heels of Hill’s four-touchdown game against the Seattle Seahawks, in which the do-it-all tight end/quarterback/salaried employee No. 7 scored three times on the ground and once through the air, also recovering a fumble and returning a couple of kicks before blocking for Alvin Kamara on the game-winning first down.

During a Monday appearance on Colin Cowherd’s radio show, Payton relayed that he texted his ‘closest friend’ Saints general manager Mickey Loomis after the game: “Hey, if you’re uncomfortable with that $10 million salary, let me know in a year or two and I’ll take it off your hands.” If you’re curious, Hill is on the books for $5.1 million this year and $13.9 million next season. Because of the way his contract is structured, trading him before June 1, 2023 would only save the Saints $50,000 in cap space. Waiting until after that date frees up $9.9 million for 2023.

Anyway: Payton gushed about Hill’s big day, adding that he called Drew Brees on Sunday evening to point out that “our guy” Hill did something once accomplished by Brees’ old Chargers teammate LaDainian Tomlinson: running for 100-plus yards and 3 or more touchdown carries while throwing at least 1 touchdown pass all in the same game.

Joking or not, his interesting in Hill is hardly surprising. Payton has spoken often about how Hill has been one of his favorite players to coach in his 15-year career, and he’d naturally want to bring him wherever he’s coaching next. Maybe that’s Dallas, Miami, Los Angeles, Cincinnati, or even here in the NFC South with the Carolina Panthers. Payton will be the most sought-after coaching candidate available in years once he decides he’s ready to grab a whistle and a playbook and put the visor back on.

And the Saints will benefit from his next move so long as it happens in the next two years. That’s how many years are left on his contract, meaning he’ll have to be traded to join a new team. While Saints fans should expect a nice return, it feels unlikely that Payton’s departure will net the kind of haul that Jon Gruden once brought the Raiders (two first round draft picks, two second rounders, and $8 million in cash). A lot has changed in the decades since that big move, and it looks like a bit of an outlier compared to the handful of other coach trades that have happened over the years.

Anyway: we shouldn’t interpret this as Payton and Hill being a package deal. So long as the Saints are remaining creative on offense and Hill is enjoying good health, he’ll have a valuable role in New Orleans. He isn’t the quarterback, and he doesn’t need to be; forcing Hill to line up under center and pass limits his game and takes away many of the fun and exciting things he can do. Payton can go find his own Hill wherever he ends up next, well, unless he’s willing to send even more of his new team’s draft picks back where he came from.

Dolphins LB Jaelan Phillips teams with Fathead for amazing fan surprise

The young linebacker continues to be great off the field.

Even in the middle of July when football is on hiatus, the Miami Dolphins continue to make an impact in their community. Since the birth of the organization, a steady constant has been the unbelievable outreach and integration of fans into the world of Dolphins football.

While not tackling anyone at the moment, second-year linebacker Jaelan Phillips has still been making his presence felt for Miami. To preface a truly great surprise set-up, the Dolphins franchise has been among sports’ best in show in philanthropy, community outreach, hospitality and fan service.

While technically not “on-call,” as there’s still time for the former Miami Hurricane to enjoy some off-time before training camp starts, Phillips was at Hard Rock Stadium with the marketing team at Fathead, promoting their popular wall-hangings seen in fan caves and rooms all over the world.

Hold that thought.

Backtracking a bit, when die-hard Dolphins dad Chaz Blackwell wanted to get his son Charlie a “perfect” ninth birthday gift, the plan was easy. Blackwell turned his son’s bedroom into one of the more impressive “kid-caves” around, and at the forefront was a massive Fathead of his favorite player, and hero
Jaelan Phillips.

Charlie celebrated his birthday back in March, and Chaz reached the goal line of his project in the spring after months of painting, leveling and wall-hangings of Dolphins memorabilia, including a famous “turnover chain” from Phillips’ Hurricane days.

Following the successful touchdown of a gift from father to son, like football, the scoring wasn’t over there. Chaz video recorded his efforts and gave Dolphins social media a tour of his creation and handed the virtual ball off to a fellow Fin fan, Waldo Waldie, host of “The Regulators Podcast.”

Waldie used his editing skills to mix HGTV, ESPN and MTV all in one and created a “Cribs”-style tour of young Blackwell’s shrine of Dolphins football. Charlie, who plays linebacker in his Florida hometown flag football league, may just be Phillips’ biggest fan. The Blackwells, weeks after the room’s completion, needed to renew their Dolphins season tickets and this is where the fun comes in.

While a plan was afoot, Charlie had no idea a trip to Hard Rock Stadium to check out seats would be the icing on the cake to an unforgettable birthday gift.

Not only did the Blackwells get a chance to walk through the “hallowed grounds” of the Dolphins’ offices, as Chaz described it, but a surprise was also waiting for Charlie on the practice field.

At first glance, Charlie walked through the doors onto the field and saw some people gathered around a guy with a Fathead headshot of Phillips held up over his face.

As one young linebacker approached the guy holding up the Phillips Fathead, it was revealed that it was in fact the Dolphins linebacker himself, appearing behind his own likeness. And, in typical Dolphins fashion, a fan’s day (and perhaps year) was made in a memory that will last a lifetime.

Phillips and the Blackwells spoke and shared stories of football and family, and the joy was written all over both linebackers’ faces. It’s one thing for a fan to meet a hero, but what about when a player realizes he’s just that?

Phillips had a chance to be on the other side of the fandom, as he states in a video that has circulated on Instagram. Being from California, Phillips was a big fan of San Diego Chargers running back, LaDainian Tomlinson, and of course, had a Fathead of his favorite player.

“When I was about 8 or 9 years old, literally the same age as Charlie, I had a LaDainian Tomlinson Fathead in my room,” he proudly revealed. “To come full circle like this, and to see a Fathead of myself; it’s one of the most surreal moments.”

Phillips is certainly enjoying what he and Fathead are doing to bridge fans to players.

“Fathead is awesome, and just the ability for the fans to, you know, be able to connect with the players and have some memorabilia is really great,” he said.

In what has become a welcomed joy of social media positivity, Fathead, Phillips and the Dolphins have done an amazing deed and have even created a must-see video documenting this outstanding effort by all involved.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CgFWaOTFeL9/

When it comes to effort, Phillips consistently is showing he’ll go above and beyond both on the field and off of it, as he looks to follow up his rookie season of 8.5 sacks with a successful sophomore campaign. The first-round pick finished 2021 with 42 total tackles and had a run of five straight games in which he recorded at least a half of a sack. Included in that stretch was a three-sack performance against the Carolina Panthers in Week 12.

Off the field, the impact of what Fathead, Phillips and the Dolphins put together for Chaz and Charlie will be everlasting, as the fun didn’t end there. Phillips of course put pen to the player, as he signed the Fathead that he held up to surprise Charlie. There’s an old saying to never meet your heroes. Don’t tell that to the Blackwells. Football is a game, that at times, can have an impact without games and without pads and helmets.

An elated dad shared his joy following the meeting.

“As a parent, when your child calls a person their ‘hero,’ you immediately think about the influence that person has on your child’s choices,” he said.

It seems Charlie has a good eye for his role models, as Phillips, both on and off the field, seems to be a hit for the Dolphins, and he hit this one out of the park.

Chaz summed up the experience with gratitude and praise for those involved saying, “Thank you so much to Jaelan, the Miami Dolphins and Fathead for this experience that we will treasure forever.”

NFL legend LaDainian Tomlinson high on Georgia football RB Zamir White

LT showing lots of love to Zeus

Georgia Bulldogs running back Zamir White helped his NFL draft stock with an impressive 40-yard dash at the 2022 NFL combine. Known as a bruising, tough-to-tackle back, he showed his speed last week in Indianapolis.

White’s unofficial time of 4.47 was later officially timed as a 4.40. He finished as the seventh-fastest running back in the event, but was only 0.03 seconds off the fastest time for a running back.

NFL legend LaDainian Tomlinson identified White as one of the guys who jumped out to him during the workout.

“A 4.40 for a guy that size is impressive, and he caught the ball well,” Tomlinson said. “This is a guy who can develop into a three-down back. When he comes into the NFL he can provide depth for a team right away.

Another thing is he’s a great protector of the quarterback. I think these teams will go back and look at his game film and see they have this guy ranked too low.”

White’s 40-yard dash time was surprisingly faster than that of his running mate James Cook’s.

Here’s a look at Zeus’ 40-yard dash at the NFL combine:

White is one of the top backs in the 2022 NFL draft. He still has work to do as a receiver, but he is not a fun guy to tackle. White ran for 25 touchdowns in three seasons with the Bulldogs.

White ended his career with a national championship, 856 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns in 2021.

White’s other NFL combine results include a 33.5 inch vertical jump and the tied for best broad jump at 10 feet, 8 inches. Neither White nor Cook participated in the bench press.

Colts’ player of the game vs. Bills: RB Jonathan Taylor

You already know who the player of the game is.

Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor made history Sunday afternoon as the only Colts player to score five touchdowns in one game.

Facing the third-ranked rushing defense in the NFL, Taylor steamrolled the Buffalo Bills every time he touched the football and proved why he deserves to be in the MVP conversation. The Colts dominated in a game many expected them to lose blowing out Buffalo by a score of 41-15 with Taylor accounting for most of those points.

Taylor finished the day with Madden-level numbers on the stat sheet. Taylor piled up 185 yards on the ground on 32 carries with an astounding four rushing touchdowns. Taylor also impressed catching the ball with three catches for 19 yards and another touchdown grab.

The Bills defense simply had no answers on defense today, and it seems even the best of defenses in this league cant seem to slow down the freight train that is Jonathan Taylor. Another accolade for Taylor is the fact that he is now the rushing leader in the NFL with over 1,100 yards on the year, and the first to reach the 1000 yard mark this season.

Yet another testament to how consistently dominant Taylor has been this season, The young running back also tied a league record of Hall of Famer LaDainian Tomlinson with his eighth consecutive game with at least 100 yards from scrimmage and a rushing touchdown.

Next week, the Colts have the defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers coming to town. Indianapolis will need another big performance from their star running back in another must-win game for the Colts to stay in the playoff hunt.

LaDainian Tomlinson: Panthers are ‘perfect opportunity’ for Sam Darnold

Ladainian Tomlinson thinks this situation in Carolina is a perfect opportunity for Darnold.

The Panthers get their first look at live competition today as they visit the Colts for the first of two joint practices ahead of their preseason matchup. Indianapolis has a tough defense that should provide a good test for quarterback Sam Darnold.

It remains to be seen how it plays out. For what it’s worth, Ladainian Tomlinson thinks this situation in Carolina is a perfect opportunity for Darnold.

Hall of Famer: Jaycee Horn will have Jalen Ramsey-type impact on Panthers defense

Hall of Fame running back Ladainian Tomlinson thinks that Horn will have a Jalen Ramsey-type impact on Carolina’s defense.

Jalen Ramsey is the best outside cornerback in the NFL today. He’s the standard by which all other corners are judged by – and it’s a high one.

Playing the most difficult position in football comes with a hell of a learning curve. Even Ramsey had some issues in his rookie season before he grew into the elite defender we see today. However, true talent will usually rise to the top. The Carolina Panthers are hoping they have a similar lockdown cornerback in the making in first-round pick Jaycee Horn.

Expectations for Horn are high, as is the hype. Hall of Fame running back Ladainian Tomlinson thinks that Horn will have a Jalen Ramsey-type impact on Carolina’s defense.

There’s no excuse for passing on a potential franchise quarterback in the draft without an established starter. However, if Horn does develop into another Ramsey-level corner, it will take a lot of the sting out – even if Justin Fields goes onto become a star for the Bears.

Peterson ranked as 2nd-best RB taken in 1st round since 2000

The Vikings drafted Adrian Peterson with the seventh pick in the 2007 NFL Draft.

In 2021, drafting a running back in the first round isn’t a very popular thing to do. However, not very long ago, running back was still a premium position.

Bryan DeArdo over at CBS Sports ranked the best running backs taken in the first round since 2000.

Former Viking Adrian Peterson, who the team drafted seventh in 2007, came in second behind only LaDainian Tomlinson.

Here’s what DeArdo wrote about Peterson:

The fifth-leading rusher in NFL history, Peterson is a three-time rushing champion and member of the NFL’s All-2010s Team. In 2012, “AD” was named league MVP after rushing for 2,097 yards, the second-highest total in NFL history. In 2015, Peterson became the second-oldest player in league history to lead the NFL in rushing. At age 36, the future Hall of Famer is hoping to land on a Super Bowl contender for the 2021 season.

It’s worth noting that there’s only one player in the top-10 on this list that was drafted in the last decade. That was Mark Ingram who was drafted 28th overall in 2011 by the Saints.

The position certainly has changed. With that being said, there were two running backs taken in the first round this year, so maybe we’re seeing a bit of a comeback of running back value in the draft.

Antonio Gibson’s hot start to his career puts him in some elite company

With 11 touchdowns through his first 11 games, Antonio Gibson is putting up numbers achieved only by Hall-of-Famer LaDainian Tomlinson, and Ezekiel Elliot.

LaDainian Tomlinson, Ezekiel Elliott, and Antonio Gibson.

Those are the only three players in NFL history to have more than 10 rushing touchdowns through the first 12 weeks of their rookie season. Pretty impressive, no?

When you consider the fact that Tomlinson, a Hall of Famer, was drafted No. 5 overall in the 2001 draft, and Elliott was taken No. 4 overall in 2016, I’d say that Washington’s rookie is outperforming expectations. Gibson was taken No. 66 overall in 2020; in the famous words of LeBron James, he ‘shouldn’t even be here.’

Except, the rookie has made it incredibly clear this season that he absolutely belongs in the NFL as a running back. There were questions about his viability coming out of college, with many wondering if he would be able to adapt to an RB role after playing with such position-fluidity at Memphis. He famously had a total of 33 carries (!) as an RB in college, but Washington trusted that they could complete the conversion.

Right they were. So far, through 11 games of his career, Gibson has 11 touchdowns — two shy of Alfred Morris’ franchise rookie record — to go along with 645 rushing yards, and 233 receiving yards. It’s clear that Washington found someone who can be their feature back for years to come, and with coach Ron Rivera’s recent comparisons between Gibson and the great Arian Foster, there’s a sense that the ceiling for this rookie is a bit unrealized at the moment. He continues to learn, he continues to grow, and he impresses us week after week.

We’ve yet to find a limit for what he can do, but at this point, we’re just going to enjoy every step of the ride.

LaDainian Tomlinson thinks Allen Robinson needs to be more consistent

The Bears offense was one of the worst in the entire NFL, which was due to a number of reasons. But WR Allen Robinson wasn’t one of them.

There wasn’t much to love about the Chicago Bears offense last season. The unit was one of the worst in the entire NFL, which was due to a number of reasons.

But receiver Allen Robinson wasn’t one of them. In fact, he was one of the lone bright spots on offense, where he was able to thrive despite the struggles around him. Robinson had a career-high 98 receptions for 1,147 yards and seven scores in 2019. That in itself would be impressive. But given the inconsistent play at quarterback and a non-existent run game, it’s all the more impressive.

Which is why it’s shocking that anyone would consider Robinson’s performance inconsistent.

When asked about the Bears’ biggest concern heading into 2020, Hall of Fame running back and NFL Network analyst LaDainian Tomlinson believes that the wide receiver group is the biggest question mark. Which is certainly debatable.

But it’s what Tomlinson said about Robinson — who singlehandedly kept the Bears offense from being the worst in the league — that caught us by surprise. Tomlinson believes that Robinson needs to be more consistent, which is just ridiculous.

“In defense of Mitchell Trubisky, I don’t think (the receivers) did him any justice and what they put around him throughout his career,” Tomlinson said on NFL Total Access. “Allen Robinson had a bounce-back career from last year, where he had over 1,000 yards. So he needs to be a little more consistent.”

When looking at Robinson’s two years in Chicago, he’s been the epitome of consistency. Sure, he didn’t have a 1,000-yard season in his first year. But that was more about distributing the ball around to different weapons than Robinson’s ineffectiveness. Not to mention, he was coming off a torn ACL, and he wasn’t at 100 percent.

In Tomlinson’s defense, he did say that it’s on other receivers to step up to take the pressure off Robinson.

“He needs to have other guys like Anthony Miller and guys like that to step up,” Tomlinson said.

Still, Robinson is the least of Chicago’s worries. The only worry with Robinson comes with locking him up to a contract extension, as he’s entering the last year of his three-year deal with the Bears.
