Notre Dame Routs Maryland to Secure Second Straight National Championship

BACK 2 BACK!

It was a bit of a concerning start for No. 1 Notre Dame on Monday when the NCAA men’s lacrosse national championship game finally got started but all’s well that ends well for the Fighting Irish.

Maryland started things off with a 2-0 lead almost 3:30 into the contest but Notre Dame quickly came back.

Will Angrick got Notre Dame on the board roughly a minute later and 51 seconds after that, Jake Taylor’s 40th goal of the season tied things 2-2.

Notre Dame and Maryland then traded goals as things sat a 3-3 with 6:06 left in the first quarter but it was an onslaught from the Fighting Irish from there.

Jalen Seymour, Eric Dobson, Devon McLane, Chris Kavanagh (three times in a row), and Reilly Gray scored seven goals in a row for Notre Dame to give the Irish a 10-3 advantage before Maryland would score just before halftime to cut the lead to six.

Jordan Faison started the scoring in the second half with a behind the back goal, his 22nd of the season which gave the Irish an 11-4 advantage.  Chris Kavanagh quickly added another pair of goals to bring the lead to nine.

Fisher Finley and Jake Taylor would add the final goals of the year to close the game a 15-5 victor.  Notre Dame goaltender Liam Entenmann stopped 16 of 21 Maryland shot attempts in the victory.

We’ll have more on this story as the celebration is on for the Irish.  In the meantime, check out some of the best photos from the blowout championship victory below!

Watch: Tyler Buchner Lacrosse Highlights

TB12 like you probably haven’t seen him before…

Much was made earlier this off-season when former Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner announced he was returning to South Bend.  He wasn’t coming back to play football though, instead choosing to pick up his lacrosse stick again and become a part of that program.

This comes after Buchner followed Tommy Rees to Alabama for one season where he wound up starting one game at quarterback for the Crimson Tide.

So now Buchner returns and is set to play a different sport for the Fighting Irish.  Just how good of a lacrosse player is the former starting quarterback?

Finding lacrosse highlights of high school players isn’t nearly as easy finding football highlights but based on how he looked as a freshman in high school, Buchner is one heck of a talent.  Check out the video below from Buchner’s freshman year.

Florida lacrosse to play in first Final Four since 2012

This is a huge weekend for Florida lacrosse’s program as they play in their second Final Four.

The Florida lacrosse program will be competing for a national championship for just the second time in history and the first time since 2012 this weekend at Wakemed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina. There, the Gators will face off with the top-seeded Northwestern Wildcats in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament Final Four.

It is the 11th career meeting between these two schools, with the Orange and Blue holding the edge in the all-time series, 6-4. They have not faced each other in a full decade, however, and the last time they met was on May 17, 2014, in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament

UF lost that game in overtime by a score of 12-11. This will also be the third neutral site matchup between the two programs, with Florida dropping the previous two.

Florida took down the fourth-seeded Maryland Terrapins, 15-9, last Thursday afternoon to earn the berth in the Final Four; Northwestern is making its fifth consecutive Final Four appearance this weekend.

The matchup is slated for Friday, May 24, with the opening draw set for 3 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU.

Notre Dame Overcomes Slow Start, Advances to NCAA Quarterfinals

Moving On!

The No. 1 seeded Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team didn’t play their best half to start Sunday’s matchup with Albany but in the end were able to overcome it and advance to next week’s national quarterfinal.

Trailing 5-4 at halftime, Notre Dame came out playing more like the top-seed on their home field, scoring the first four goals of the second half to take an 8-5 advantage, eventually cruising to a 14-9 victory.

Pat and Chris Kavanagh led the way for Notre Dame, scoring five points each in what wound up being a 14-9 victory.  Pat had three goals and a pair of assists while Chris scored one goal and had four helpers.

Devon McLane and Jake Taylor both had hat tricks for the Fighting Irish with McLane actually netting four goals.

Will Lynch was ferocious for Notre Dame in the faceoff circle, winning 18-of-26 draws on the afternoon.

Notre Dame now advances to the NCAA Quarterfinals next weekend on Long Island where they’ll take on No. 8 Georgetown, the only team to beat the Irish this season.

No. 1 Notre Dame Routs No. 6 Duke to Capture ACC Championship

ACC Champs Again!

The sound you heard coming from Charlotte this weekend was the No. 1 Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team sending a warning shot to the nation.

The reigning national champions plowed through the ACC Tournament by routing No. 5 Virginia in Friday’s semi-finals before dismantling No. 6 Duke in Sunday’s championship game.

This is Notre Dame’s third ACC Tournament championship all-time and marks the first time the Fighting Irish have won both the regular season and conference tournament championships.

Notre Dame got things started early as Jake Taylor scored just over 2:30 into the game.  Reilly Gray, Taylor, and Chris Kavanagh combined to put the Fighting Irish up 5-0 before Duke finally scored in the closing moments of the first quarter.

Notre Dame would score three more times in the second to stretch the lead to 8-2 at halftime.

Duke scored twice to start the third period to get within four, but wouldn’t get any closer as Notre Dame would stretch the lead back to six, 11-5, by the third quarters end.

Notre Dame would score five times in the final period to close with a 16-6 victory over the team they beat in last year’s national championship.

Notre Dame now turns to the NCAA Tournament where they’ll be the odds on favorite to repeat as national champions.

Gators lacrosse earns 10th-straight AAC Tournament title

The Orange and Blue never trailed in the game en route to the team’s 13th double-digit victory this spring.

The Florida lacrosse program completed a decade of dominance on Saturday after earning its 10th-straight American Athletic Conference Tournament Championship. The ninth-ranked Gators defeated the 18th-ranked James Madison Dukes by a final score of 21-11.

The Orange and Blue never trailed in the game and was only tied once (other than 0-0) en route to the team’s 13th double-digit victory this spring. The offensive onslaught was propelled by four different Gators racking up hat-tricks — the first time that has happened since April 18, 2021.

Emily Heller and Ashley Gonzalez both scored four goals while the latter added two assists, while Danielle Pavinelli put up three goals and three assists, accounting for 11 of Florida’s 21 goals and five of the team’s 11 assists. They — along with Kaitlyn Davies, Elyse FInnelle and Liz Harrison — were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Florida now awaits the results from the Selection Show Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN2, which will determine their seeding and matchup for the NCAA Tournament.

No. 1 Notre Dame Dominates No. 5 Virginia, Heads to ACC Championship

Total domination!

It was over before the fans could even get comfortable in their seats Friday as the top-ranked Notre Dame lacrosse team dominated No. 5 Virginia in the ACC Tournament semi-finals.

In the 18-9 win, 14 different Notre Dame players scored goals.

Notre Dame started fast with a 6-1 first quarter lead and stretched the lead to 10-3 by the end of the first half.

Notre Dame’s foot remained in the gas out of the break, extending the lead to 14-4 in the third quarter.  That lead would stretch as the way to 17-5 at one point before Virginia scored a few goals late against the deeper part of Notre Dame’s bench.

Notre Dame heads to the ACC Championship game for the fourth-straight time where they’ll play Duke for the conference title.
