Quique Setien sealed a 1-0 win over Granada when he made his debut as Barcelona coach in Week 20, with the new boss seeking a second straight league win when the team travels to Valencia on Saturday. Los Che haven’t lost a domestic fixture at the Mestalla since it surrendered 1-0 to Eibar in April. However, the team is unbeaten in 11 matches and hopes to preserve that record against La Liga’s leaders.

Lionel Messi’s 76th-minute strike against Granada ensured Setien secured three points in his debut with the Blaugrana, who suffered a 2-0 defeat away to the same opponent in September.

One could interpret that as one improvement already upon what Ernesto Valverde had achieved with the club, not to mention the fact they accounted for more than 82 percent of possession.

Valencia was left reeling in Week 20 after it suffered a 4-1 hammering away to Mallorca, with the loss made all the worse by Dani Parejo’s sending off after he received two yellow cards. Manager Albert Celades could have striker Rodrigo back for the visit of Barca, but the attacking duo of Goncalo Guedes and Manu Vallejo are doubtful to return in time.

If it’s of any comfort to Saturday’s hosts, Barcelona will be without the services of striker Luis Suarez, who recently underwent surgery on his right knee and is expected to be out until May.

Winger Ousmane Dembele will also be out of the running due to an ongoing hamstring problem, though midfielder Arthur could be in contention to make his first start since December 1.

Valencia held Barcelona to a 1-1 draw the last time the team made the trip to the Mestalla in October 2018, later beating the Catalan giants 2-1 in Seville to clinch last season’s Copa del Rey.

When these teams last met in September, Barca got revenge with a one-sided 5-2 win at Camp Nou, a result newcomer Setien will hope to replicate in his first away game in charge.

Porto can move 12 points in front of Sporting CP in the Primeira Liga standings on Sunday if it can win at Estadio Jose Alvalade for the first time since October 2008. More than a decade has passed since the Dragons last triumphed at this venue, but a run of nine wins and one draw means traveling to Lisbon, Portugal bodes well for their chances of ending that drought.

Sporting’s recent form has been patchier by comparison, though it is no slouch after winning seven of its last nine matches, keeping clean sheets in all but one of those victories. The Lions have also established a fortress mentality at home in recent months and have won each of their last six games at Jose Alvalade in all competitions, conceding only two goals throughout.

A run at the title looks unlikely for Sporting after its torrid start to the campaign, with the team now third in the table and 13 points off leaders Benfica. Porto is only four points away from the top team, but haven’t been as reliable away from home this season. Manager Sergio Conceicao is yet to see his side surrender a point at Estadio do Dragao, but it’s only won four of seven away games and drew 1-1 at Belenenses last time on the road.

Tiquinho Soares has 10 goals in 23 appearances this season but is responsible for four of Porto’s last eight scored, netting recent braces against Tondela and Chaves. Brazilian forward Luiz Phellype has hit a good streak of form for Sporting and has scored in three of the team’s last four matches. Bruno Fernandes possesses the keys to unlock Porto’s defense from attacking midfield, though the Portugal international also has great finishing ability of his own.

Both Portuguese powerhouses will feature in the last 32 of this season’s UEFA Europa League, with Sporting set to face Istanbul Basaksehir, while Porto takes on a more difficult challenge in Bayer Leverkusen.

After a sub-par performance against Real Madrid, the Blaugrana still managed to take sole possession of first place thanks to its biggest rival’s misstep before the winter break. Now that the team has edged in front, Barcelona will be looking to separate itself from the pack. Despite its top of the table status, rumors of Ernesto Valverde’s long-term future at the club persist. Reports have even linked former Barcelona forward Thierry Henry to the club’s manager job if Valverde is relieved of his duties. It remains to be seen what exactly would need to happen for the Spaniard to lose his job, but winning in the league should help his cause, at least until the Champions League resumes in February.

With the way things are going for Espanyol, this season could feature the last Barcelona Derby for a while. The lesser known Barcelona-based club is struggling mightily and is sitting at the very bottom of the league table. The team has just 10 points through 18 matches and is five points from safety. It doesn’t take much of a deep dive into the stats to figure out why the team is so low in the table. Espanyol has conceded the most amount of goals, while also scoring the least. If things don’t change soon, relegation seems inevitable.

Getafe will target its first win over Real Madrid since August 2012 on Sunday, when the two clubs face-off at Coliseum Alfonso Perez in their return from La Liga’s winter break.

Zinedine Zidane’s side carries a 13-match unbeaten streak to Getafe, but the manager hopes for a pick up in league form after drawing the last three top-flight games in a row.

Los Blancos trail league leaders Barcelona by two points ahead of Week 19 and a win on Saturday afternoon will temporarily lift them just ahead of the defending champions. Getafe has enjoyed one of its best first halves of a top-flight campaign on record, and it could climb from sixth to as high as fourth should it take maximum spoils at home.

Manager Jose Borladas’ side suffered a 1-0 loss away to Villarreal in its last game before the Christmas interval, which ended a streak of six successive wins in all competitions (eight games unbeaten).

Barcelona is the only team to beat Getafe at Alfonso Perez in La Liga this season, and only three teams have clinched more than their 18 points at home: Blaugrana (25), Real (21) and Athletic Bilbao (20).

Zidane will be desperate not to lose more ground away from home and allow Barcelona to eke further ahead in the title race, though some key absences could upset their chances.

Real captain Sergio Ramos will be missed in central defense as he sits out the trip to Getafe due to suspension, while Eden Hazard is still out of commission with a hairline fracture in his foot. Left-back Marcelo (calf) and winger Lucas Vazquez (toe) could be in the running to return.

Left-back Mathias Olivera is suspended for the match following his red card in the loss to Villarreal, while left-sided whiz Marc Cucurella—on loan from Barca—will hope to do his parent club a favor.

Getafe frustrated Real to a 0-0 stalemate when these teams last met at this venue in April, and their expanded horizons since then hint at even greater prospects this time around.

Real Madrid arrives in this one in great form, unbeaten in eight matches and navigating a tough stretch of games brilliantly to stay neck and neck with Barcelona in first place. The two will meet at Camp Nou in less than two weeks and Los Blancos have two league matches until then to pick up six points, keep the unbeaten run going and play their biggest game of the season with all the confidence in the world.

This weekend’s game against relegation candidate Espanyol looks to be the perfect chance to win big at home and put pressure on Barça. After all, Espanyol is 19th in the table with just one win in its last seven and has one of the worst defenses in the league. The funny thing is Espanyol has been a Top 10 team on the road, so the team can’t be taken lightly. However, with Madrid having won four of the last five games against Espanyol and the urgency to keep up with Barcelona, there’s only one favorite to win this one.
