2024 Cardinals roster preview: DL L.J. Collier

We will preview every player on the Cardinals’ roster heading into training camp. This is about defensive lineman L.J. Collier.

The Arizona Cardinals will open training camp July 23 and begin the process of preparing for the regular season, forming the roster and determining starting jobs and roles on the team.

Leading up to the start of camp, we will take a look at every player on the offseason roster, their background, their contract, their play in 2023, questions they face and their roster outlook.

Next up is defensive lineman L.J. Collier.

Background

Collier was selected by the Seahawks in the first round of the 2019 draft from TCU. He was with Seattle for four seasons and played 45 games with 16 starts. All 16 came in 2020 when he played 49 percent of the defensive snaps. However, the most he played was 30 percent in the other three seasons. Collier had 40 tackles (24 solo) and 3.0 sacks in his Seahawks career. He became an unrestricted free agent in 2023 and was signed to a one-year contract by the Cardinals on March 22.

2023 stats

Collier was limited to one game, which he started, because of a torn biceps suffered in the season opener against the Commanders. He played 37 snaps (52 percent) and had two solo tackles.

2024 contract details, cap hit

Scheduled to become a UFA again, he signed a one-year deal prior to the start of the league year. The contract is worth $1.29 million and includes a $1.125 million salary, $25,000 signing bonus and per-game roster bonuses of $8,382 that can total a maximum of $142,500. Collier’s cap charge is $1.018 million.

Questions he faces

Can he pick up where he left off after earning a starting job in 2023? That’s the question he faces along with having added competition from the veteran additions of Bilal Nichols, Justin Jones and Khyiris Tonga and rookie Darius Robinson.

2024 roster outlook

Collier has the ability to be one of the five or six defensive linemen likely to make the roster, but it won’t be easy thanks to the competition from those mentioned along with second-year lineman Dante Stills.

LB Kyzir White, DL L.J. Collier, DL Dante Stills to be healthy for offseason program

The Cardinals will count on White, Collier and Stills in 2024 and they will start the offseason “full tilt” with the start of the offseason program.

The injury bug bit the Arizona Cardinals a lot in 2023 and a number of players ended the season on injured reserve. Three defensive players the Cardinals will be counting on in 2024 should be good to go by the time players take the field for offseason workouts in April.

Head coach Jonathan Gannon told reporters (via AZCardinals.com) at the annual league meeting in Orlando this past week that defensive lineman L.J. Collier and linebacker Kyzir White, both of whom saw their seasons end with biceps tears, will be “full tilt” when the offseason program begins.

Also healthy is defensive lineman Dante Stills, who injured his knee at the end of the season and missed the finale after a solid rookie season.

Collier re-signed this offseason one a one-year contract. White has one year remaining on his two-year deal and Stills enters the second of his four-year rookie contract.

The offseason program for the Cardinals begins April 15.

Contract details, salary cap breakdown for DL L.J. Collier

After getting a one-year deal to join the Cardinals last offseason, he gets another one-year deal to return.

At the end of last week, the Arizona Cardinals reached and agreement on a one-year contract for potential unrestricted free agent defensive end L.J. Collier that is very similar to the deal he signed in 2023.

Collier earned a starting job in training camp, but was lost for the season because of a torn pectoral muscle suffered in the opener against the Commanders.

Last year at this time, after playing his first four seasons with the Seahawks, he signed a one-year deal worth $1,232,500 that included a signing bonus of $76,250.

L.J. Collier contract details

The contract Collier signed this year is worth $1,292,500, which includes a base salary of $1.125 million, a $25,000 signing bonus and per-game roster bonuses of $8,382 that will total $142,500 if he plays all a1l 17 games.

Salary cap implications

As a one-year qualifying contract, only $985,000 of the base salary counts against the cap. The $25,000 is added to that along with $8,382 because he played that one game last season and results in a cap charge of $1,018,382.

If he plays more than one game in 2024, each $8,382 will be charged to the Cardinals cap in 2025.

Cardinals re-sign DL L.J. Collier to 1-year contract

Collier returns to the Cardinals after playing in only one game and tearing his biceps.

The Arizona Cardinals are bringing back defensive tackle L.J. Collier. First reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Collier is re-signing with Arizona on a one-year contract, per his agent. The team announced the actual signing as well.

Collier, a former first-round draft pick, signed a one-year contract as a free agent last year. However, his season lasted only one game as he tore his biceps, which ended his season. He had three tackles in the season opener against the Washington Commanders.

Per his agent, Collier is “excited to be a Cardinal.”

Throughout training camp and in the preseason, Collier looked good, providing disruption on the defensive interior.

In five NFL seasons, he has been healthy in only one season. He has played in 46 games, starting 17, and has 42 tackles, 3.0 sacks, 13 quarterback hits, six tackles for loss and five pass breakups.

A healthy Collier will be huge for Arizona’s defense. But the question is whether he can stay healthy.

It is a good first start for Arizona in free agency.

DL L.J. Collier placed on IR, could miss significant time

Collier is expected to need surgery to repair his injured biceps.

The Arizona Cardinals announced a number of roster moves on Saturday in preparation for their Week 1 matchup with the New York Giants. Among them, they placed defensive lineman L.J. Collier on injured reserve.

He suffered a biceps injury last week in the season opener. He did not practice all week and was ruled out of the game in the final injury report.

Now he must miss at least four games, but it appears he could miss much more.

According to ESPN’s Josh Weinfuss, Collier is expected to need surgery.

Biceps surgery can often be season-ending.

Collier has struggled with injuries in his career. The only season in which he played every game was 2020.

In one game with the Cardinals, he played 37 defensive snaps and ha two tackles.

We will see whether he will be able to return at all this season. He is on a one-year deal.

Seahawks fans react to former Seattle DL L.J. Collier’s comments

That’s relatively harmless as far as trash-talking your former team goes, but of course some fans aren’t taking it too well.

Nothing upsets an NFL fanbase quite like a first-round draft pick who turns out to be a bust. L.J. Collier was one of several during the dark years (2013-2021) when the Seahawks front office seemingly forgot how to draft. These days Collier is playing for the division rival Cardinals and he made some comments to the media yesterday that have ruffled the feathers of the fanbase, saying Seattle wasn’t his type of place.

That’s relatively harmless as far as trash-talking your former team goes, but of course some fans aren’t taking it too well. Here’s what the 12s are tweeting about Collier.

2 Cardinals players kicked out of practice for fighting

OL Dennis Daley and DL L.J. Collier were both thrown out of Saturday’s practice after getting into a scuffle.

Training camp fights used to be the norm in the NFL. It has been a while since an Arizona Cardinals head coach tolerated them.

Jonathan Gannon doesn’t tolerate them.

“It’s a non-negotiable,” Gannon said Thursday, according to AZCardinals.com’s Darren Urban. “And why it’s a non-negotiable is because you get thrown out in a game for it.”

It came up in Saturday’s practice.

Gannon followed through.

When the team was running 11-on-11 goalline drills, offensive lineman Dennis Daley and defensive lineman L.J. Collier, both veteran free agent additions this offseason, had a scuffle after a play.

The result?

Both were thrown out and sent to the locker, just like they would be in a game.

Gannon preaches physicality and football violence, but that is different than fighting after a play. One is fierce competition when it is legal and encouraged. The other is unsportsmanlike conduct.

Other dustups might occur, but we will see whether Gannon has to toss anyone else during practice in the weeks to come.

L.J. Collier excited for, cognizant of ‘fresh opportunity’

He can’t wait to face his former team twice and knows the Cardinals are taking a chance on him.

The Arizona Cardinals took a chance on former first-round pick L.J. Collier, who played the last four seasons for the Seattle Seahawks. He never achieved what was expected of him.

Het took a one-year deal for slightly more than the league minimum and he intends on proving himself.

He is excited for the opportunity and for staying in the division.

“I get to see the Seahawks two times a year and I’m excited about that,” said Collier, according to AZCardinals.com’s Darren Urban.

He saw the success the defensive line of the Philadelphia Eagles had last season when new Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon was their defensive coordinator.

He is grateful for the team in taking a chance on him and he knows what that means. He doesn’t want to disappoint.

“It’s a fresh opportunity. I appreciate these guys taking the chance on me,” he said. “They could’ve gotten anybody and they went with me. I’m going to make sure they don’t regret that.”

Collier currently projects as one of the Cardinals’ starting defensive ends.
