7 things to know ahead of Bears vs. Vikings in Week 6

The Bears are looking to take down the rival Vikings for their second win. Here’s what you need to know ahead of the game.

After a much-needed mini-bye week, the Chicago Bears are preparing themselves for a divisional matchup against the Minnesota Vikings this Sunday.

While going up against the purple and gold last year seemed like certain defeat for Chicago, the winds have blown in a drastically different direction this year. Minnesota is one of the worst teams in the league, sharing the dingy basement of the NFC North with the Bears. Though the Kirk Cousins-led offense has functioned like a well-oiled machine, their defense is absolutely horrendous.

The Vikings’ surprising vulnerability makes Week 6 a winnable game. This matchup will feature much debate and speculation as to who will win and what each team’s strengths and weaknesses are, but Chicago has a storied history with the Minnesota.

Here’s what you need to know ahead of Bears vs. Vikings in Week 6.

Bears announce several roster moves, including Kyler Gordon designated to return from IR

The Bears designated CB Kyler Gordon and C Doug Kramer to return from IR and officially signed RB Darrynton Evans to the active roster.

The long weekend for the Chicago Bears has come and gone, and now it’s back to business as usual, which includes a flurry of roster moves as they prepare for a Week 6 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings. On Monday, the Bears announced they signed running back Darrynton Evans to the active roster as well as quarterback Nathan Peterman to the practice squad. The Bears are also welcoming back a few players from injury, as they designated cornerback Kyler Gordon and center Doug Kramer to return from injured reserve.

Evans spent the 2022 season with the Bears, primarily on their practice squad. He played in six games, rushing 14 times for 64 yards. He bounced around the league during the 2023 offseason, most notably with the Buffalo Bills, where he made a statement against the Bears in the final preseason game with nine carries for 65 yards, including a 35-yard touchdown. Evans was most recently on the Miami Dolphins practice squad before coming to the Bears.

The signing of Evans is in response to the ankle injury running back Khalil Herbert suffered during last Thursday’s 40-20 win against the Washington Commanders. Herbert is expected to miss multiple weeks with the injury.

While the Bears are preparing to be without Herbert for the next few weeks, they could be getting a key player back in the fold. Gordon is set to return to practice this week after spending the last four weeks on injured reserve. He suffered a broken hand in the team’s Week 1 loss to the Green Bay Packers. Gordon had one tackle and one pass defensed before exiting the game.

Kramer, meanwhile, is also returning to practice after missing the first five weeks of the season. The second-year center was injured in the team’s final preseason game and has yet to play in a regular-season game. Both players will need to be activated within 21 days, or they will revert back to injured reserve.

5 biggest storylines going into Week 2 against the Buccaneers

The Bears are looking to get their first win of the season against the Buccaneers. Here’s what to watch for on Sunday:

The Chicago Bears have the chance to rebound following a brutal Week 1 loss and advance to 1-1 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

It’s been a tumultuous week in Halas Hall this week; both defensive coordinator Alan Williams and starting guard Nate Davis will not join the team in Tampa Bay due to personal reasons, and several players admitted that last week’s embarrassing loss to Green Bay was a humbling experience.

It’s all culminated in what’s generally perceived as a “must-win” game in only the second week of the NFL season. The dire circumstances are not an over-exaggeration; several jobs, both players and coaches, could be on the line if Chicago’s fails in the same spectacular fashion as they did last week.

From a pure football perspective, the Bears’ game against the Bucs is certainly winnable. Tampa Bay has talent, particularly at receiver and at the defensive line, but Chicago has talent too. The two squads are more evenly matched than many anticipated, and it should make for an interesting game, to say the least.

As the Bears’ soap opera of a week reaches its climactic conclusion, let’s go over the five biggest storylines heading into this Week 2 against the Buccaneers.

Bears CB Kyler Gordon underwent surgery for broken hand

Kyler Gordon had surgery on his broken hand, and the Bears hope he can return in Week 6 against the Vikings.

Bears cornerback Kyler Gordon underwent surgery for a broken hand suffered in last Sunday’s loss to the Packers, head coach Matt Eberflus shared.

Gordon was placed on injured reserve earlier this week, which means he’ll miss at least the next four games (Buccaneers, Chiefs, Broncos and Commanders). Gordon is eligible to return in Week 6 against the Vikings.

“We’re anticipating if all things go well, he can be back after Washington,” Eberflus said. “We’ll keep him in our prayers and all that. We visited earlier and his teammates have been talking to him, and he’s in a good spot, mentally, right now with that.”

With Gordon sidelined for at least the next month, the Bears secondary is without one of its best players. Now, the question becomes who will take Gordon’s spot at nickel cornerback Sunday against the Buccaneers, especially with Josh Blackwell doubtful to play with a hamstring injury.

“When you have a guy like ‘Spidey’ (Gordon) go down, you know he’s a good player,” Eberflus said. “We’re certainly going to miss him. But what you do is you try to do the best with your roster. In [Greg Stroman Jr. and Blackwell], we’re going to see where it is, and those guys have been with us, so they know the system. They know how to play and they’ve played in there before, so we feel good about it.”

So who’s replacing Gordon? To be determined.

5 keys to a Bears victory vs. Bucs in Week 2

The Bears are looking to get their first win of the 2023 season against the Bucs, and here’s how they can get it done.

With the horror of last week’s game laid to rest, the Chicago Bears (0-1) are looking to right their wrongs in Week 2 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-0).

While victory is certainly obtainable against an average Tampa Bay team, the win will not come easy. The Bucs have one of the best wide receiver tandems in the league with Chris Godwin and Mike Evans and harbor an elite defensive front. Chicago will need to correct their multitude of mistakes from opening weekend to get to a steady 1-1 record through two weeks.

Let’s break down the five keys to a Bears Week 2 win:

What’s the latest with the Chicago Bears?

The Bears secondary suffered a blow with cornerback Kyler Gordon landing on injured reserve with a hand injury suffered in Sunday’s loss. Gordon will miss at least the next four games, making him eligible to return in Week 6 against the Minnesota Vikings.

Here’s a look at the most recent and relevant Bears stories for the morning of Sept. 15.

Bears place CB Kyler Gordon on injured reserve

The Bears secondary has been dealt a huge blow as CB Kyler Gordon has landed on IR with a hand injury.

The Chicago Bears have placed cornerback Kyler Gordon on injured reserve, the team announced Thursday. Gordon suffered a hand injury in Sunday’s loss to the Green Bay Packers.

Gordon will miss at least the next four games, and he’s eligible to return Sunday, Oct. 15 when the Bears host the Vikings at Soldier Field.

In last Sunday’s loss to the Packers, Gordon recorded one tackle and one pass breakup before getting injured in the fourth quarter.

With Gordon landing on injured reserve, Chicago has promoted Greg Stroman Jr. to the active roster from the practice squad. They’ve also re-signed undrafted rookie cornerback Macon Clark to the practice squad.

As for Gordon’s potential replacement at nickel cornerback, head coach Matt Eberflus said Wednesday they are “looking at all of our options.” It’s worth noting Josh Blackwell stepped in for Gordon in last Sunday’s loss to the Packers, so he should be the favorite.

But Blackwell was a limited participant in Wednesday’s practice as he deals with a hamstring injury, which is something worth monitoring ahead of Sunday’s game.

Bears mum on whether CB Kyler Gordon is going on IR

Matt Eberflus said Bears CB Kyler Gordon isn’t expected to practice Wednesday. But he wouldn’t say more than that.

Bears cornerback Kyler Gordon suffered a hand injury during Sunday’s blowout loss to the Packers, and it’s believed to be an injury that could sideline him for several weeks.

Head coach Matt Eberflus didn’t have any updates Monday, as Gordon was meeting with team doctors. But Eberflus remained mum about Gordon during his Wednesday press conference, only saying the team doesn’t expect Gordon to practice Wednesday.

“I don’t have anything more than that right now,” he said.

Eberflus wouldn’t say whether Gordon would go on injured reserve or not. Whether it’s a good or bad indication — most likely bad — we’ll have to wait and see.

As for Gordon’s potential replacement, Eberflus said they are “looking at all of our options.” It’s worth noting Josh Blackwell stepped in for Gordon in last Sunday’s loss to the Packers, so he should be the favorite.

Bears confident Josh Blackwell can step up for injured Kyler Gordon

Kyler Gordon is expected to be sidelined for several weeks with a hand injury, which means it’s next-man-up with Josh Blackwell at nickel.

The Chicago Bears were embarrassed by the Green Bay Packers in Week 1. To make matters worse, it sounds like Chicago will be without a key defensive starter for awhile.

Cornerback Kyler Gordon suffered a hand injury during the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game, and he was immediately ruled out.

While head coach Matt Eberflus didn’t have an update on Gordon’s status on Monday, Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune said Gordon is believed to have a broken hand that could sideline him 6-8 weeks.

If that’s the case, it’s a brutal blow for the Bears’ secondary. But it’s next-man-up mentality, which means we’ll be seeing a lot more of Josh Blackwell, who replaced Gordon at nickel cornerback.

Cornerback Jaylon Johnson explained why he’s confident that Blackwell could step in and fill the void of Gordon’s absence.

“What gives me confidence is I’ve seen him do it,” Johnson said, via the Chicago Tribune. “I mean, shoot, he played against Aaron Rodgers and the Packers last year and he did a really good job. He’s definitely been out there in the fire. … He knows how it feels to be out there in a real game playing against some real competition. So I’m looking forward to him going out there, learning that chemistry with the ones and then playing ball.”

Last season, Blackwell played in 15 games, including one start, as an undrafted rookie, where he totaled 12 tackles on defense. He was also a key special teams contributor, recording 11 tackles on special teams and forcing and recovering a fumble in Week 4 against the New York Giants.

Gordon’s injury is the latest blow for Chicago’s roster, as starting left guard Teven Jenkins is currently on injured reserve with an undisclosed leg injury.

Matt Eberflus doesn’t have update on injured Bears CB Kyler Gordon

Kyler Gordon suffered a hand injury in the fourth quarter of the Bears’ loss to the Packers.

The Chicago Bears were defeated by the Green Bay Packers, 38-20, to kick off the 2023 NFL season. As if getting blown out by your biggest rivals in front of the entire country wasn’t bad enough, Chicago lost a key starter to injury.

Cornerback Kyler Gordon suffered a hand injury in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game. He was replaced by Josh Blackwell at nickel. Gordon was spotted after the game with his right hand wrapped up.

Bears head coach Matt Eberflus was asked about Gordon’s status during his Monday press conference. But Eberflus declined to share details other than Gordon is still being evaluated by the Bears’ medical staff.

Gordon, who played 27 snaps, had one tackle and a key pass breakup on third-and-2 before exiting the game.

Following an off day Tuesday, the Bears will return to the practice field Wednesday, which should provide us our first update about Gordon’s status.
