Jags sign free agent QB Kyle Sloter, release QB EJ Perry

With EJ Perry sustaining an injury while training recently, the Jags have signed USFL QB Kyle Sloter.

While the Jacksonville Jaguars roster reported for camp, their front office made a move to shake up the quarterback room a bit. That move involved the team signing free agent quarterback Kyle Sloter and releasing undrafted rookie quarterback EJ Perry.

The decision to sign Sloter comes after the Jags hosted him earlier this weekend. He clearly impressed them and now will be the fourth quarterback on the Jags’ roster alongside Trevor Lawrence, C.J. Beathard, and Jake Luton.

Sloter spent this year playing in the United States Football League during its inaugural season with the New Orleans Breakers. He finished the season with a completion rate of 57.7% (168-of-291) for 1,798 passing yards, nine touchdowns, and 11 picks.

Sloter is entering his sixth season in the NFL after entering it in 2017 as an undrafted player with the Minnesota Vikings. While he’s never played in a regular-season game, he does have some experience in the preseason, making him a good option to bring on for training camp.

As for Perry, he signed with the Jags as an undrafted free agent after the draft out of Brown University. He was initially going to join the Philadelphia Eagles but signed with the Jags instead after they picked up another undrafted quarterback in Carson Strong.

Jags coach Doug Pederson likes to build strong quarterback rooms, and with Sloter having NFL experience and experience in the USFL, he clearly believed the Jags received an upgrade at the QB4 role. With him coming off his recent time with the USFL, he also may be able to pick things up relatively fast as the Jags’ first preseason game (against Las Vegas) is a little over a week away on Aug. 4.

Update: According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Perry suffered a hamstring injury while training this offseason.

Report: Jaguars signing former Vikings QB Kyle Sloter

After spending a season with the USFL’s New Orleans Breakers, Sloter is returning to the NFL.

Kyle Sloter is returning to the NFL.

After spending a season with the USFL’s New Orleans Breakers, the former Minnesota Vikings quarterback is reportedly signing a deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero broke the news on Sunday morning.

It was inevitable that the phone would eventually ring for Sloter’s services considering the solid season he had with the Breakers. He had the second-most passing yards and helped get the team to the South Division Final, where they were ultimately knocked off by the championship-winning Birmingham Stallions.

There will obviously be plenty of training camp competition for Sloter upon arrival in Jacksonville. So there’s no guarantee he’ll be chosen as a backup to starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

All anyone can ask for is an opportunity to live out a dream of playing in the NFL. Back in June, Sloter told the Pioneer Press’ Chris Tomasson there aren’t “80 or 90 quarterbacks in the world who are better” than he is right now.

He’ll now have a chance to prove it.

Jags host USFL QB Kyle Sloter for a free agent visit

Sloter was 168-of-291 (57.7%) for 1,798 passing yards this season with the New Orleans Breakers. He also accumulated nine touchdowns and 11 picks.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have a busy weekend ahead of them on the field as the roster is set to report for training camp on Sunday. However, that hasn’t stopped their front office from doing their due diligence to improve the roster where they can.

While they have four quarterbacks who they probably like heading into camp, they hosted free agent quarterback Kyle Sloter on Saturday. However, that didn’t lead to a signing, though the team may have him on their radar to sign in the future.

The Jags took a look at Sloter after he spent this year in the United States Football League with the New Orleans Breakers. While with them, he was 168-of-291 (57.7%) for 1,798 passing yards, nine touchdowns, and 11 picks.

Before his time in the USFL, Sloter spent some time in the NFL and entered it as an undrafted free agent in 2017 with the Denver Broncos. He also spent time with the Minnesota Vikings, Arizona Cardinals, Detroit Lions, Chicago Bears, and Oakland Raiders. However, during his time in the NFL, he wasn’t able to take the field for a regular-season game.

As we’ve said in the past, Doug Pederson likes to develop a strong quarterbacks room, so their interest in Sloter isn’t surprising. As of now, C.J. Beathard, Jake Luton, and undrafted rookie E.J. Perry are the quarterbacks behind Trevor Lawrence on the depth chart, and all three were able to participate in organized team activities.

Former Vikings QB Kyle Sloter pulled a Patrick Mahomes with ridiculous pass

Sloter was channeling his inner Mahomes with this throw.

It was a rough weekend for Kyle Sloter and the New Orleans Breakers, but the former Minnesota Vikings quarterback did manage to complete one of the best plays of the week during the USFL playoff semifinals against the Birmingham Stallions.

Sloter has been noted for his willingness to stand in the pocket and make throws under pressure. Granted, it cost him a couple of times with two ugly interceptions on Saturday.

But on one particular play, he channeled his inner Patrick Mahomes with the pocket closing in around him.

While being twisted around by a defender, he was able to maintain his balance just enough for a side flick to tight end Sal Cannella for the duo’s best Mahomes and Travis Kelce impersonation.

Things didn’t end the way Sloter hoped, but overall, it was a successful year with him nearly leading the Breakers to the championship in the USFL’s inaugural season.

It’s clear he’s going to need to cut down on the turnovers in the future. He was second in the entire league in passing yards (1,798), but he also threw more interceptions than touchdowns.

So it shouldn’t come as any surprise that turnovers ultimately sealed the deal in the Breakers’ 31-17 loss.

Kyle Sloter’s USFL postseason run wrecked by former Vikings players

Former Vikings players were making plays on both sides in the USFL playoffs semifinals.

Former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kyle Sloter’s USFL playoff run came crashing to a halt over the weekend with the New Orleans Breakers losing in the semifinals to the Birmingham Stallions.

Turnovers played a big role in the Breakers coming up short of their goal of competing in the inaugural USFL championship on Sunday.

And you can thank two former Vikings players for that as well.

Stallions linebacker DeMarquis Gates and cornerback Tae Hayes were all over the field making plays throughout the game. Gates came up with a backbreaking pick-six after Sloter was hit in the pocket while trying to make a throw.

And Hayes came up with the second takeaway on a heads up play—and a straight up bad pass by Sloter.

Hayes made a pit stop in Minnesota back in 2020.

After serving on the practice squad for a month, he was boosted to the active roster ahead of the team’s Week 17 matchup with the Detroit Lions that season.

Meanwhile, Gates was also on the Vikings roster that year during spring work and training camp.

Neither player had long stays in Minnesota, but they have clearly caught on well in the USFL for a Stallions team set to do battle with the Philadelphia Stars in the championship game.

As for Sloter, who finished the season second in passing behind Tampa Bay Bandits quarterback Jordan Ta’amu, it’s back to the drawing board for the 28-year-old signal-caller who still has a burning desire to get back to the NFL.

Former Vikings QB leading the USFL in passing

A familiar face is leading all USFL QBs in passing yards and completions

Former Minnesota Viking Kyle Sloter isn’t convinced there are 80 quarterbacks in the world better than he is right now. He isn’t even convinced 32 quarterbacks are better than him.

Clearly, no quarterback has been better in the UFSL with Sloter currently leading the league with 1,449 passing yards and 138 completions with the New Orleans Breakers.

That immediate success has him hoping another NFL opportunity will fall into his lap at some point. At only 28 years old, he isn’t ready to give up on the dream of competing against the best in the world.

“There’s not 80 or 90 quarterbacks in the world who are better than me. I don’t think there’s 32 better than me. I know I can play [in the NFL],” Sloter said in a phone interview with the Pioneer Press’ Chris Tomasson. “…I think I’m showing that I can lead a team. I’m showing that I can win games, and finish in big situations. I think I’ve made a bunch of NFL throws with guys breathing down my neck.”

Sloter was signed briefly with the Vikings last December as a stand-in when backup quarterback Sean Mannion was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. He was waived less than a week later.

However, opportunity could come knocking once more if he continues to produce in the USFL.

With only three games left on the regular season schedule, the Breakers have their toughest matchup of the season on Saturday against the unbeaten Birmingham Stallions in a nationally televised game.

It’s as good of a time as any for Sloter to remind the world he’s NFL-ready.

Ex-Broncos QBs Paxton Lynch and Kyle Sloter make USFL debuts

Kyle Sloter’s USFL debut went much better than Paxton Lynch’s.

Former Denver Broncos quarterbacks Paxton Lynch and Kyle Sloter made their USFL debuts on Sunday.

Lynch did not start for the Michigan Panthers but he came off the bench after a Shea Patterson fumble led to a fumble-six for the Houston Gamblers. Lynch later lost a fumble himself and he also threw a very poor interception.

After Lynch went 2-of-5 passing for one yard with two turnovers, the Panthers went back to Patterson and Lynch finished the game with a 1.7 quarterback rating. Michigan lost to Houston 17-12.

Sloter had a much better debut, starting for the New Orleans Breakers in their 23-17 win over the Philadelphia Stars. Sloter didn’t have a perfect game (he also threw an interception), but his day went much better than Lynch’s.

Sloter went 17-of-27 passing for 150 yards, good for a 102.2 passer rating. Sloter also rushed four times for 30 yards in the win.

Ex-Denver tight end Bug Howard also scored a touchdown for the Stars in his USFL debut. Lynch, Sloter and Howard among 20 former Broncos playing in the USFL this spring.

Former Vikings QB leads team to win in USFL debut

The New Orleans Breakers get a 23-17 season-opening win with a familiar face at quarterback

There were plenty of familiar faces kick-starting the festivities over the weekend in the season-opening week of the USFL. One of those faces was former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kyle Sloter.

As the leading signal caller for the New Orleans Breakers, Sloter stepped under center on Sunday and helped lead the team to a 23-17 win over the Philadelphia Stars.

Granted, the team was carried by the defense for the most part with linebacker Vontae Diggs snatching a pick-six early in the ballgame. The team also leaned heavily on the legs of running back Jordan Ellis, along with the versatile playmaking abilities of T.J. Logan Jr.

Sloter, who was actually signed to the Vikings’ active roster last December, went 17-of-27 passing for 150 yards and one interception. So it wasn’t necessarily the big coming-out-party he hoped it would be. But the outcome played out in his favor, and he can look forward to improving in his next outing.

The 28-year-old quarterback played for six different teams during his time in the NFL, including two pit stops in Minnesota.

At the very least, it’s a positive turn of events seeing a former journeyman get some well-deserved shine as a starter in a new league.
