Movie about ex-Giants QB Kurt Warner to be released in December

A biopic on the playing career of former New York Giants QB Kurt Warner will be released in December.

Most of the movies about NFL players end in tragedy or leave the viewers dreaming of what might have been.

That will not be the case for the upcoming biopic about Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner, who will have his improbable life story documented in a new feature film based on his 2009 autobiography, “All Things Possible.”

The film will be released to theaters on Dec. 10. It had been scheduled to hit the big screen in 2020, but production was delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

From CBS Sports:

“American Underdog” chronicles the incredible true story of Kurt Warner (Zachary Levi), who went from stocking shelves at a supermarket to become a two-time NFL MVP, Super Bowl champion, and Hall of Fame quarterback. The film chronicles Warner’s unique story and years of challenges and setbacks that could have derailed his aspirations to become an NFL player, and when his dreams seemed all but out of reach, it is only with the support of his wife, Brenda (Anna Paquin), and the encouragement of his family that Warner perseveres and finds the strength to show the world the champion that he already is inside. “American Underdog” is an inspirational story that demonstrates that anything is possible when you have faith, family and determination.

Warner took over for an injured Trent Green in the 1999 preseason and led the St. Louis Rams to two Super Bowl appearances, winning one, as the ringleader of “The Greatest Show on Turf.” He was signed by the Giants in 2004 but was replaced by rookie Eli Manning after guiding Big Blue to a 5-4 record. He moved on to the Arizona Cardinals in 2005 and led them to the Super Bowl three seasons later, losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Santonio Holmes’ miraculous touchdown catch in the final minute of the game.

Also appearing in the film are Dennis Quaid as Rams coach Dick Vermeil, former arena league player O.J. Keith Simpson as St. Louis running back Marshall Faulk and former Bengals cornerback Simeon Castille as Rams wide receiver Isaac Bruce.

Movie about Kurt Warner’s path to NFL officially gets release date

“American Underdog: The Kurt Warner Story” will officially be released this holiday season.

Younger fans of the Rams may not know exactly how Kurt Warner came to be a Super Bowl champion and Hall of Fame quarterback. His path to the NFL was an unconventional one, to say the least, going from stocking shelves at a grocery store to playing in the AFL to getting a shot with the Rams in 1997.

With how remarkable his journey was, it’s only fitting that his story be told in movie form. “American Underdog: The Kurt Warner Story” is going to chronicle how Warner made it to the pinnacle of the sport, with the former Rams quarterback being played by actor Zachary Levi.

On Thursday, the film got an official release date, as it will hit theaters on Dec. 10. Warner shared his excitement for the news on Twitter, saying it’s “been an incredible journey.”

The movie is directed by Andrew and Jon Erwin. Dennis Quaid is also starring as former Rams coach Dick Vermeil, who led the Rams to a Super Bowl XXXIV victory in 2000.

Warner was at the center of the “Greatest Show on Turf,” as the Rams took the league by storm with one of the best offenses the NFL has ever seen even to this day. After going undrafted and being cut by the Packers, Warner still managed to become one of the best quarterbacks in league history with 32,344 yards and 208 touchdown passes in his career.

Kurt Warner is celebrating his 50th birthday with 50-yard hill runs

Kurt Warner is staying in great shape as he hits 50 years old.

Former Rams quarterback Kurt Warner has stayed busy in his post-NFL career, doing a lot of broadcasting work since retiring from football. He’s also managed to stay in great shape and continue to help young athletes with camps and training drills.

Warner turned 50 on Tuesday and he celebrated the only way he knows how: by doing hill runs. Warner thanked everyone on Twitter for the birthday wishes and shared a photo of the 50-yard hill he ran up 10 times to celebrate the big day.

Running up and down that hill doesn’t seem so bad with views like that, but doing it 10 times at the age of 50 is pretty impressive. The Hall of Famer could probably still chuck a ball 50 yards, too.

During his career with the Rams, Warner went 35-15, threw for 14,447 yards, 102 touchdowns and 65 interceptions. But most importantly, he won Super Bowl XXXIV against the Titans and also led the Rams to Super Bowl XXXVI, though they lost that game to the Patriots.

Kurt Warner does extensive film breakdown of Rams offense

Kurt Warner broke down the Rams offense on film, analyzing their heavy play-action scheme. He loves Matthew Stafford’s fit in L.A.

Sean McVay has made some changes to the Rams offense over the last few years, but the core of it has remained the same. Los Angeles uses a lot of play action, a bunch of pre-snap motion and relies heavily on 11 personnel, where three receivers, one tight end and one running back are on the field together.

McVay likes to make everything look the same from one play to the next, forcing defenses to stay on their toes when trying to diagnose a play pre-snap. It’s hard to tell whether the Rams are going to run the ball or throw it because they’re able to do either one from just about any formation and personnel grouping.

Now with Matthew Stafford coming aboard, the playbook should be opened even more. Kurt Warner recently broke down the Rams offense on film in a detailed 15-minute video on YouTube as part of his Study Ball series. He discusses why the Rams offense is so difficult to defend and why Stafford will be a difference-maker.

Kurt Warner gives John Wolford his full endorsement for wearing No. 13

John Wolford switches to jersey number 13, Kurt Warner gives his full endorsement.

Kurt Warner is well-known for his tenure with the Rams, sporting the No. 13 jersey as he led the franchise to a Super Bowl win in 1999. However, with Matthew Stafford joining the Los Angeles Rams via trade and Cam Akers switching to No. 3, Wolford is going to be next in line to wear the No. 13 jersey in the royal blue and sol uniforms.

Wolford wore No. 9 with the Rams a season ago as the immediate backup to Jared Goff, but he changed to No. 3 when Stafford arrived. The Wake forest product would become a fan favorite immediately when he was forced to step in for Goff late in the season due to a thumb ailment that the former first overall selection suffered in Week 16 against the Seattle Seahawks.

In relief of Goff, Wolford brought a dynamic to the offense that Goff was incapable of doing, which included extending plays with his legs. Warner, who has experience with having to replace the starter, is now advocating for Wolford wearing his old jersey number.

Los Angeles would prefer to not have Wolford see the field in 2021 as Stafford is expected to have a productive year under Sean McVay. But if Wolford is called into action, he’ll be wearing a familiar jersey number for Rams fans.

Rams fans react to John Wolford wearing Kurt Warner’s old number

John Wolford had to change his jersey number for the second time this offseason, so he’s going with 13.

For the second time in the last few months, John Wolford has made a number change. After switching from No. 9 to 3 when Matthew Stafford arrived, Wolford then had to change his number again when Cam Akers went from No. 23 to 3.

With few viable choices remaining, Wolford is going with an iconic number in the eyes of Rams fans: 13. It’s a number that was made famous by Kurt Warner in St. Louis after he led the Rams to two Super Bowls, winning one of them.

The Rams announced the change on Twitter and fans’ reactions were mixed. Some were shocked to learn 13 wasn’t retired by the team, while others love the choice by Wolford.

Here are some of the responses on social media.

For those outraged by Wolford wearing No. 13, he’s not the first player to rock it since Warner’s departure. Brock Berlin wore it in 2008, Chris Givens did too from 2012-2014, and Mike Thomas most recently wore No. 13 in 2016.

So let’s all take a deep breath before getting heated about a backup quarterback wearing Warner’s old number.

Watch: Kurt Warner breaks down film of Matthew Stafford’s fit with Rams

Kurt Warner loves Matthew Stafford’s fit with the Rams and broke it down extensively in three videos.

The Los Angeles Rams gave up a lot to land Matthew Stafford this offseason, trading two first-round picks, a third-rounder and Jared Goff. They also took on $24.7 million in dead money by trading Goff’s contract, not an insignificant price to pay.

The reason behind the trade is obvious: The Rams believe they’re a star quarterback away from winning a Super Bowl, and they were willing to give up major assets to acquire one. By most accounts, it was a wise move by Los Angeles.

Kurt Warner is in the camp of favoring this blockbuster deal for the Rams, loving Stafford’s fit in Sean McVay’s offense. In a three-part video series, Warner broke down what makes Stafford a great quarterback for the Rams (Parts 1 and 2), as well as some of his weak spots (Part 3)

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

All three videos are worth watching because it’s tough to find in-depth breakdowns by a former quarterback like Warner. He discusses Stafford’s aggressiveness, his arm talent and his weaknesses, but overall, he likes this pairing for the Rams.
