7 National Championship game players Jets could take with their first 2 picks

Tee Higgins and Justin Jefferson are among seven players from the National Championship game that the Jets could take in the 1st two rounds.

The Jets, like every other team, were keeping a close eye on LSU’s 42-25 victory over Clemson in Monday night’s National Championship game.

The game provided a chance to take in draft-eligible players that should be on the Jets’ radar. Among those players are potential No. 1 wide receivers, future starting running backs, sideline to sideline linebackers and shutdown cornerbacks that New York could target in the first two rounds of the 2020 NFL draft.

With that said, here are seven College Football Playoff National Championship game players that the Jets should consider in April.

Clemson: WR Tee Higgins

If the Jets prioritize a wide receiver in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft, it’s likely because there has been a run on offensive linemen before they pick at No. 11.

With Alabama’s Jerry Jeudy and Oklahoma’s CeeDee Lamb likely off the board within the top-10, that leaves Clemson’s Tee Higgins as a viable option if the Jets elect to stay at No. 11 or trade down and stock up on draft capital.

In Monday’s National Championship, Higgins wasn’t a major factor in the passing game, but his 36-yard rushing touchdown kept Clemson alive in the first half.

His basketball background surely shows in the way he plays wide receiver. Higgins is big, tall and long-bodied, standing at 6-foot-4. He has an outstanding catch radius with the ability to make impressive catches in tight coverage.

Higgins projects as the type of big body wide receiver that Sam Darnold has been lacking and could replace Robby Anderson as the Jets’ top target on the outside.

Here are a few of the top prospects that could help the Bears to watch in Monday’s National Championship Game between LSU and Clemson.

All eyes will be glued to Monday night’s National Championship Game, where the LSU Tigers and Clemson Tigers will battle for the collegiate championship glory.

There will be plenty of scouts in attendance, and the Bears have plenty of needs they need to address this offseason. Monday night’s game will feature some of the best prospects heading into the 2020 NFL Draft.

With Leonard Floyd’s future in question, Chicago needs an edge rusher that can thrive opposite Khalil Mack. Chaisson’s explosiveness coming off the weakside is something that should make him an attractive option for teams.

In 2019, Chaisson had 58 total tackles, 6.5 sacks, 13.5 tackles for loss, two pass breakups and one forced fumble. His freakish athleticism and natural ability shows he can be effective as a speed rusher off the edge.

This coming Monday all eyes will be on the National Championship Game in New Orleans, Louisiana. While both teams are playing for college football immortality, for select players it goes beyond their final game in a college uniform.

There will be plenty NFL scouts in attendance as they get one final opportunity to put their notes together in a game before the offseason bowl games, combines and pro day workouts.

QB Joe Burrow

At this point it seems like a foregone conclusion that Burrow will be the number one overall selection at this point. His Heisman season put him on the map and with the Cincinnati Bengals likely done with the Andy Dalton era all but over, look for Burrow to take off one tigers jersey and trade it for one in orange and black.

Assessing the Jags’ top-7 positional needs heading into 2020 offseason

The Jacksonville Jaguars have a lot of needs, but luckily they at least have the draft capital to make some progress on fixing the roster.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have made their decisions on moving forward with Doug Marrone and Dave Caldwell, which now means fans can now look forward to free-agency and the draft. If there was one thing that can be taken away from the 2019 season it’s the fact that the Jags have a ton of needs, and in all probability, they won’t be able to address all of them.

Regardless, we’ve decided to evaluate the Jags’ biggest needs based off how the Jags’ last season which resulted in a 6-10 record. Here’s how we rank each need at the moment:

7. Wide receiver

Heading into the 2018 season I felt as though the Jags’ receiver corps was a strength of the Jags, but after watching the season unfold, there is room for improvement. Clearly, DJ Chark Jr. was the No. 1 player within the group and proved to be a stud, racking up 1,008 yards and eight touchdowns. His 2019 campaign made him the youngest receiver in franchise history to garner 1,000 receiving yards (alongside Allen Robinson) and the first receiver since 2015 to hit that mark (which was also held by Robinson).

Behind Chark, however, there are question marks. Dede Westbrook, who many (including myself) was high on, had a very average campaign in 2019 where drops were an issue for him. Chris Conley flashed on occasions and was the team’s No. 2 statistically (775 yards), but he too had some drops that were concerning.

All of that said, receiver isn’t a huge need for the Jags but with the strongest receiver class fans have seen in quite some time arriving in 2020, the Jags could have a grand opportunity to make their receivers group elite. If they truly use a best available player method in the first-round, their No. 9 overall pick looks like the sweet spot to land the No. 1 receiver in the class. Whether that’s Jerry Jeudy or CeeDee Lamb varies between draft pundits, but both are simply too good for a team lacking offensive fire power to pass on.

Eagles land a CB, WR from the SEC in updated 3-round projections

With the NFL season halfway completed and playoff positions starting to fall into place, the time has started for the mock draft season in advance of the 2020 NFL Draft. If the season ended today, the Eagles will at No. 15 in the first round.

In the latest updated 3-round mock from Draft Wire, the Eagles landed three big-named prospects, two from the South Eastern Conference.

15. Philadelphia Eagles | Kristian Fulton | CB | LSU
Injuries continue to limit a secondary with tons of youth and potential, and the Eagles should continue to stock their cupboard with talented corners. Fulton is a big, physical cover man who could give them an immediate upgrade.

50. Philadelphia Eagles | DeVonta Smith | WR | Alabama

Smith, a semifinalist for the Biletnikoff Award, has 1,026 yards and 11 TDs.

81. Philadelphia Eagles | Brandon Jones | S | Texas

Philadelphia has issues at both cornerback and wide receiver over the past two seasons. Fulton and Smith would immediately make the Eagles more athletic at the skill positions, while Jones would start the transition at safety from Malcolm Jenkins.

Jags land 2 pass catchers and 2 DBs in Draft Wire 3-round mock draft

The Jags could use a starting cornerback after trading Jalen Ramsey and Draft Wire slotted the Jags a successor in their latest mock.

Despite the emergence of receiver DJ Chark, many draft pundits have continued to mock Oklahoma receiver CeeDee Lamb to the Jacksonville Jaguars. That’s not to say we disagree here at the Jags Wire as Lamb is having an unreal season, racking up 44 receptions for 983 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Our comrades at Draft Wire are amongst those on the web who like the fit and slotted him to the Jags in their latest mock draft. They also slotted the Jags a new cornerback to start at Jalen Ramsey’s old spot in Louisiana State’s Kristian Fulton with their second first-round selection form Los Angeles Rams.

13. Jacksonville Jaguars | CeeDee Lamb | WR | Oklahoma

No matter who is playing quarterback for the Jags next year, that passer will need a blue-chip No. 1 receiver to make this offense reach its potential. Lamb has been a one-man highlight reel all season long, and has all the tools to be that player from Day 1.

20. Jacksonville Jaguars (from LAR) | Kristian Fulton | CB | LSU

After trading away arguably the league’s best corner in Jalen Ramsey, the Jags obviously have a gaping hole on the roster. Why not use one of the picks they got in return to fill that need? Fulton is big, physical, and immediate starter material.

Adding one of college’s most elite playmakers in Lamb sounds like a win in my book. Nick Foles, Gardner Minshew II, and coordinator John DeFilippo certainly wouldn’t complain either, as they could throw some nightmare formations at the opposition with Chark, Lamb, Westbrook, and Conley.

Fulton would be another welcomed addition. We’ve mentioned him in the past as our own Daniel Griffis did a breakdown on him, singling out his hip flexibility and versatility.

The Jags didn’t stop with just one pass catcher in Draft Wire’s mock, though, and were slotted Washington tight end Hunter Bryant, who would provide some much-needed help at the tight end position. They also double-dipped in the secondary by drafting Minnesota’s Antoine Winfield, Jr.

77. Jacksonville Jaguars | Antoine Winfield, Jr. | S | Minnesota

Sure, fans will be quick to point out the fact that the Jags just drafted Josh Oliver, however, we’ve yet to see much out of him. Additionally, the position has been very injury prone with James O’Shaughnessy and Geoff Swaim going on injured reserve and Oliver himself missing the Jags’ first six games. Adding the 6-foot-2, 239-pound Bryant onto the roster could work wonders for the Jags passing offense because he’s tremendous after the catch and is a problem for defensive backs to bring down.

As for Winfield, his name may sound very familiar. That’s because he’s the son of retired NFL great Antoine Winfield Sr., who was a three-time Pro Bowler. Needless to say, Winfield’s elite athleticism rubbed off on his son, who is a rising name in the 2020 NFL Draft after his two-pick performance against Penn State. He has the ball skills in which the Jags could use in their backfield, though Jarrod Wilson and Ronnie Harrison certainly aren’t bad players.
