Sorting through the Boston Celtics trading away Marcus Smart

The Celtics sent their heart-and-soul point guard to the Grizzlies for two first round picks and Porzingis.

After a reported deal between the Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Clippers and Washington Wizards that would have landed star big man Kristaps Porzingis with the Celtics and would have placed 2023 Sixth Man of the Year Malcolm Brogdon in Los Angeles fell through, Boston pivoted and did the unthinkable: It traded veteran floor general Marcus Smart.

In a new three-team deal with the Memphis Grizzlies, the Celtics sent their heart-and-soul point guard to the Grizzlies for a first-round pick in the 2023 NBA draft (via Memphis) and in the 2024 draft (via Golden State) in addition to Porzingis ending up in green and white.

Reacting to the Boston Celtics trade of Marcus Smart for Kristaps Porzingis

The trade also impacts the Celtics’ future decisions regarding player contracts.

The Boston Celtics have sent Marcus Smart to the Memphis Grizzlies and acquired Kristaps Porzingis from the Washington Wizards in a different three-team deal than many fans expected to see completed when waking up the next day.

As part of the deal, the Celtics also obtained valuable draft picks, but the departure of Smart has divided Celtics fans. Porzingis’ potential contract extension raises financial concerns for the team as well, whether you are afraid of a long-term commitment due to his health concerns or worried he might leave the team for nothing in free agency. The trade also affects the Celtics’ future decisions on player contracts.

The host of the CLNS Media “Garden Report” podcast, Bobby Manning, sat down after the news broke to offer his thoughts on the surprise deal.

Check out the clip embedded above to hear what he had to say about the end of the Smart era.

Celtics Lab 203: On the lack of love and trust in Boston after Marcus Smart’s trade with Jack Simone

Emergency podding to talk over the unexpected Smart news, and what it means for the team, for fans, and for the future.

Many fans of the Boston Celtics went to bed thinking they would wake up to 2023 Sixth Man of the Year Malcolm Brogdon as a Los Angeles Clipper, reserve forward Danilo Gallinari a Washington Wizard, and Kristaps Porzingis a Boston Celtic. Some who went to bed earlier may have thought they’d wake up with Brogdon and Gallo on the Wiz and Porzingis a Celtic.

But pretty much no one had Marcus Smart a Memphis Grizzly well before dawn on the next day. The move by team president Brad Stevens to shake up the club by dealing away its longest-tenured player for the Latvian big man and draft capital hit Boston fans right in the feels, even the ones who believe it was a savvy move under the new collective bargaining agreement.

And not everyone is thrilled to have put so much of the team’s salary cap into a player who has averaged less than 60 games played per season over a seven-season career and has problematic allegations in his past.

The cohost of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast, Cameron Tabatabaie, linked up with Celtics Blog’s Jack Simone to talk over the unexpected news, and what it means for the team, for fans and for the future.

Former Badger guard set for expanded role in sophomore season

With the 2023 NBA Draft taking place Thursday night, one roster that is undergoing a complete rebuild is the Washington Wizards.

With the 2023 NBA Draft taking place Thursday night at 7PM CT on ESPN, many teams are looking to shake up their rosters. One roster in particular that is undergoing a complete rebuild is the Washington Wizards. Former Badger Johnny Davis could be set for a massive uptick in usage in his second year in the league.

Both Bradley Beal (Suns) and Kristaps Porzingis (Celtics) have been dealt to new teams and Davis will be amongst those that can be expected to pick up the slack after their departures. Both players, Beal and Porzingis, averaged 23.2 points per game in 2022, leaving a combined 66.4 PPG to be replaced.

Johnny Davis, although he had his struggles with injuries and consistency, came into his own down the stretch. After being selected 10th overall in the 2022 NBA Draft following a two-year career at Wisconsin, the 6-foot-4 guard proved himself late in his rookie campaign.

Over the final eight games, Davis saw his role expand with Washington, averaging 14.6 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 1.0 steals and 0.8 blocks while playing 32.6 minutes per contest. That stretch included starting the Wizards’ final five games and Davis truly arrived as both an offensive and defensive asset.

Badger fans will always root for their former star in Davis that averaged 23.7 PPG in 2021-2022, leading Wisconsin to a 25-8 record and winning Big Ten Player of the Year.

Marcus Smart, Kristaps Porzingis trade grades: Who won the Celtics, Grizzlies and Wizards deal?

Who won and lost this wild three-way NBA trade?

WELL WELL WELL.

I went to bed like many of you thinking that a much-discussed, seemingly nearly-at-the-finish-line deal between the Boston Celtics, Washington Wizards and Los Angeles Clippers was very much dead.

But then I woke up and … Kristaps Porzingis is back to being a Celtic. They REALLY wanted him, I guess!

And Marcus Smart is now a member of the Memphis Grizzlies?! That’s VERY different and changes this deal, so it’s time for a fresh set of trade grades to see who won and lost in this deal.

Let’s dive into this one as we get ready for the 2023 NBA Draft:

Celtics trade Marcus Smart to Memphis, land Kristaps Porzingis in massive deal with Wizards and Grizzlies

The Boston Celtics are bringing aboard Kristaps Porzingis next season, but sending Marcus Smart to Memphis in the process as part of a blockbuster deal with the Wizards and Grizzlies.

The Boston Celtics have opened up the 2023 offseason with surprise fireworks, sending veteran guard Marcus Smart to the Memphis Grizzlies while reeling in former All-Star Kristaps Porzingis and draft equity according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. This marks a massive shake-up for a Celtics team that came up short this spring in seeking a repeat trip to the NBA Finals.

Along with Porzingis, Boston will receive the No. 25 pick in Thursday’s draft from Memphis as well as a 2024 first-rounder from the Grizzlies via Golden State. Marcus Smart, the longest-tenured member of the Celtics, is headed to Memphis. Boston is sending the No. 35 pick in this year’s draft, Danilo Gallinari, and Mike Muscala to the Wizards. Memphis point guard Tyus Jones will be also be routed to Washington.

The 7’3″ Porzingis represents a huge injection of talent for Boston’s frontcourt. He spent last season posting career highs across the board with Washington, and the 27-year old gives the Celtics a new and dynamic weapon alongside Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Marcus Smart’s departure, meanwhile, leaves a notable hole in Boston’s guard rotation and in the locker room.

Report: Clippers pull out of Brogdon-Porzingis deal citing injury concerns; Wiz and Celtics work toward new deal

The Clippers have reportedly pulled out of the three-team trade centered around Malcom Brogdon and Kristaps Porzingis because of injury concerns while Boston and Washington pursue other routes.

The three-team deal that would send big man Kristaps Porzingis to the Boston Celtics is reportedly on hold, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

The Los Angeles Clippers, the theoretical landing spot for guard Malcolm Brogdon, are no longer interested in the trade, while the Celtics and Washington Wizards are still working on completing a deal by midnight ET on Wednesday, per Woj.

Substack’s Marc Stein reported concerns about the former Virginia player’s injured arm led the Clippers to back out of the deal. Brogdon, who suffered a tendon injury in his right elbow during the postseason, recently told the Athletic he is “optimistic” he will not need offseason surgery. He would have been headed to the Clippers, while Washington would land a few expiring contracts and draft capital, sending Porzingis to Boston in the process.

The Celtics and Wizards can still come to terms on a deal. Porzingis has to decide to opt into the final year of his contract worth $36 million, thus allowing for a trade to Boston. From there, Porzingis could ink a two-year extension with the Celtics this July or a longer one in the winter. The former All-Star would become an unrestricted free agent this summer if he does not utilize his player option.

Kristaps Porzingis traded to the Celtics: How it impacts them, Clippers, and Wizards

Analyzing the Kristaps Porzingis trade and how it impacts the Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Clippers, and Washington Wizards.

The Washington Wizards rebuild is full steam ahead. After agreeing to trade Bradley Beal to the Phoenix Suns, they are trading Kristaps Porzingis in a three-team deal with the Clippers. The Clippers are getting Malcolm Brogdon, while the Wizards are acquiring the 30th overall pick in this year’s draft, Amir Coffey, and the expiring contracts of Marcus Morris and Danilo Gallinari.

Note: These are all the details reported when this was published, and it’s possible Washington may get additional draft compensation from the Celtics.

On the proposed Celtics trade for Kristaps Porzingis

The Celtics may not send any picks in this scenario with early reporting suggesting draft compensation coming from Los Angeles in the proposed deal.

The Boston Celtics, Washington Wizards and Los Angeles Clippers have discussed a potential three-team trade that would have the Wizards send Kristaps Porzingis to Boston and Malcolm Brogdon head to the Clippers.

The Wizards are still recovering from the Bradley Beal trade, and the Celtics are exploring creative ways to improve their roster. Porzingis would fit well defensively and provide rim protection, but there are concerns about his health and fit with star Celtics forwards Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum.
