Saints release backup guard Koda Martin with an injury settlement

The Saints released backup guard Koda Martin with an injury settlement, giving him an opportunity to play again this year and lightening the workload on their medical staff:

Few positions have lost as many players to injuries at New Orleans Saints training camp as the offensive line, especially at guard. And the Saints moved on from one player who was already sidelined by an injury by releasing backup guard Koda Martin with an injury settlement.

Martin went down in practice with an ankle issue and was previously waived with an injury designation, later landing on the Saints injured reserve list. By now releasing him with an injury settlement, he’ll be paid the weeks of regular season salary that he would have received on the reserve list while recovering on his own.

So why agree to it? This opens the door for Martin to return to the Saints or sign with another team later this year, once he’s healed up and can pass a physical and practice. It also eases the workload on the Saints medical staff while they tend to other players on injured reserve and any others who may get banged up in the days, weeks, and months ahead. It’s as close to a win-win situation for the player and team as you’ll see in today’s NFL.

We’ll see if Martin returns later in the year or if he joins another squad. For now, the Saints are working to sort out their last remaining roster spots at guard behind Cesar Ruiz, James Hurst, and Andrus Peat with rookie draft pick Nick Saldiveri on top. Guys like Calvin Throckmorton, Lewis Kidd, Mark Evans II, Tommy Kraemer, and Chuck Filiaga are competing for one or two spots on the 53-man roster.

And as for those remaining on the Saints’ injured reserve list: guard Trai Turner, linebacker Andrew Dowell, and running back Eno Benjamin are all done for the year, though it’s unclear whether right tackle Scott Lashley is eligible for an injury settlement of his own. We’ll keep an eye out for more movement.

Saints sign a familiar face to replace Trai Turner at guard

The Saints signed a familiar face to replace Trai Turner at guard, bringing back a veteran player they waived just before training camp started:

There’s the guard we were looking for: the New Orleans Saints brought back Koda Martin after waiving him before training camp to open a roster spot for Trai Turner. Turner, the five-time Pro Bowler competing for a backup spot on his hometown team, went down with a season-ending injury at Friday’s training camp session. Martin’s return was listed on the daily NFL transactions wire.

So Martin is returning to the same spot he held a few weeks ago. He’ll reenter the fray for one of the last available roster spots behind Cesar Ruiz and Andrus Peat, though it’s clear that guys like Calvin Throckmorton and Nick Saldiveri have a leg up on him. He needs to show the Saints they were wrong to release him in the first place and outwork youngsters like Lewis Kidd and Mark Evans II.

Here’s what we wrote of Martin when he first signed with New Orleans back in January:

“Martin, 29, hasn’t seen many reps in the NFL since signing with the Los Angeles Chargers as an undrafted free agent back in 2019, though he played a handful of snaps on the field goal units and at right guard for the Arizona Cardinals in 2021. He finished his collegiate career at Syracuse, where he started all 13 games at right tackle as a senior in 2018; that’s after transferring from Texas A&M, where he started at left tackle as a junior.”

Are the Saints finished making moves at guard? Maybe, maybe not. There are still free agents available they could sign to add more competition to the room, and if they’re unimpressed by the state of competition they could also call around the league and see which players are available for trades.

Saints waive two veteran players to make room for new additions

The Saints waived two veteran players to make room for their new additions following pre-training camp tryouts:

We’ve talked plenty about the players the New Orleans Saints signed on Tuesday, all three of which became official on the daily NFL transactions wire: tight end Jimmy Graham is the headliner, but they’ve also brought in depth along the offensive line with guards Trai Turner and Max Garcia.

New Orleans had just one roster spot to spare after releasing backup center Billy Price last week, so some corresponding moves were necessary to fit these new additions underneath the 90-man roster limit. The Saints waived reserve tight end Miller Forristall and backup guard Koda Martin, each of whom arrived this offseason through signing futures contracts with New Orleans after their previous teams chose to not retain them on the practice squad.

Are they finished making moves? No. The Saints regularly cycle in new players throughout training camp to churn the bottom of the depth chart and look for quality backups, so keep an eye out for updates. Odds are any big acquisitions are behind them at this point in the offseason, but you never know.

Koda Martin signs reserve/future contract with the Saints

Former Cardinals and Syracuse right guard Koda Martin signed a reserve/future contract with the Saints, adding him to their offseason roster:

Here’s another reserve/future contract signing for the New Orleans Saints. The Saints announced Wednesday that offensive lineman Koda Martin signed with them to join their 90-man offseason roster, bringing more depth up front. That’s key for a unit facing more upheaval during the 2023 offseason with starters like left guard Andrus Peat looking like a potential salary cap casualty.

Martin, 29, hasn’t seen many reps in the NFL since signing with the Los Angeles Chargers as an undrafted free agent back in 2019, though he played a handful of snaps on the field goal units and at right guard for the Arizona Cardinals in 2021. He finished his collegiate career at Syracuse, where he started all 13 games at right tackle as a senior in 2018; that’s after transferring from Texas A&M, where he started at left tackle as a junior.

So he has experience lining up on each side of the line and he’s moved inside as a pro. That could help his case for a roster spot over the summer, though he’ll be competing with other players like second-year backup Lewis Kidd for snaps in practice. The more competition, the better off this Saints team will be.

OL Koda Martin returns to practice squad

Martin returns after OL Lachavious Simmons lands on the practice squad injured reserve.

The Arizona Cardinals announced a couple of practice squad moves Wednesday and a familiar face returns.

They brought back offensive lineman Koda Martin, who has been with the Cardinals in the practice squad since 2020. He was released from the practice squad last month to add offensive lineman Lachavious Simmons.

However, Simmons is hurt and was placed on the practice squad injured reserve and Martin returns.

He did appear in two games last season for the Cardinals but otherwise has been on their practice squad.

Cardinals announce 3 practice squad additions

The Cardinals made some roster moves Wednesday before practice.

The Arizona Cardinals announced the addition of three players to their practice squad on Wednesday. They added running back Tavien Feaster, whose signing was reported Tuesday, offensive lineman Koda Martin and cornerback Greg Mabin.

Feaster spent the offseason and preseason with the Cardinals this year before being cut. His addition is likely in response to a hamstring injury to Eno Benjamin. Benjamin injured his hamstring last week and was out at the end of the week and would have been unable to play. He has not yet been active in his NFL career.

Martin was recently released Monday when safety Chris Banjo was added to the 53-man roster. He had played the last two games for the Cardinals.

Mabin is a new addition. Listed at 6-2 and 200 lbs, he has played in 34 career games (five starts) with the Bills (2017), 49ers (2017-18), Bengals (2019) and Jaguars (2020). He has 41 career tackles, six pass breakups, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. He played in five games last year with Jacksonville and had a career-high 20 tackles. Mabin originally entered the league in 2017 with Tampa Bay as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Iowa.

Cardinals protect CB Prince Amukamara, 3 others on practice squad in Week 6

They could have some concerns at depth at guard this week.

The Arizona Cardinals announced Tuesday the addition of veteran cornerback Prince Amukamara to the practice squad. He was one of four players they designated as protected for Week 6.

The list is different than in past weeks.

They protected the following players, according to the league’s transaction report on Tuesday.

  • CB Prince Amukamara
  • TE Evan Baylis
  • DL Michael Dogbe
  • G Koda Martin

These four players cannot be signed by another team this week.

Baylis was not protected last week but was elevated to the active roster and played four snaps.

Dogbe has been protected in previous weeks but never elevated to the roster.

Martin is an interesting one because it potentially suggests depth concerns at guard. Both J.R. Sweezy and Justin Pugh exited the Cardinals’ Week 5 win over the New York Jets with injuries.

If either is unable to play this week, Justin Murray would slide into the starting lineup. The Cardinals’ first injury report of the week will be released Wednesday afternoon. We will see if there is the possibility someone might be out this week.

Cardinals sign offensive lineman Koda Martin

The former undrafted rookie spent 2019 on injured reserve wit the Chargers.

The Arizona Cardinals made a roster move Tuesday that appeared on the NFL transaction report but the team did not yet announce. After right tackle Marcus Gilbert announced he was opting out of the 2020 season with a high-risk designation, the Cardinals added another offensive lineman to the roster.

They signed former Los Angeles Chargers guard Koda Martin.

Martin was an undrafted rookie in 2019 out of Syracuse and Texas A&M who spent the season on injured reserve for the Chargers.

Los Angeles cut him over the weekend.

He is 6-foot-6 and 304 pounds.

He played three seasons with Texas A&M before going to Syracuse as a graduate transfer, where he played for his father and his father-in-law.

He is long and was a good pass blocker in college, playing tackle. He was not as good in run blocking. He split time between tackle and tight end his freshman year with the Aggies.

He likely will not be in the mix for the final roster but might be a practice squad candidate.
