NBA Wires roundtable: Projecting the NBA’s 2023 regular season awards

These are our picks for the league’s full season awards.

The 2022-23 NBA season is officially over, and the votes for the league’s regular season hardware are being tabulated for each of the Association’s major awards. Soon, the world will know who the 2023 Most Valuable Player, Sixth Man of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, and Rookie of the Year are among player awards.

With them will come Coach of the Year, and Executive of the Year as well. Ahead of the official release of which players, coaches, and execs won what awards, our staff at USA TODAY’s NBA Wire sites put their heads together to try and prognosticate the results we think we’ll soon hear in official releases from the league.

So with all that said, these are our picks for the NBA’s 2023 regular season awards.

More on this storyline

“The acquisition of Donovan Mitchell presented us with an incredible opportunity to bring one of the NBA’s most dynamic young All-Stars to Cleveland,” said Altman. “Already a special and proven talent at just 25-years-old, Donovan brings a competitive mentality that organically fits with the core group of this team. We are excited to see the impact that someone of Donovan’s caliber can bring to the Cavaliers with his ability to score the basketball, but also make plays for his teammates.” -via NBA.com / September 3, 2022
According to Adrian Wojnarowski from ESPN, the Cleveland Cavaliers trasded Lauri Markkanen, Ochair Agbaji, Collin Sexton, three unprotected first-round picks, and two pick swaps to Utah Jazz for Donovan Mitchell. “Obviously, it’s a great addition to the team,” Cedi Osman shared his reaction to the trade with BasketNews. “I believe that everybody [in the organization] is excited.” Does he see the Cavaliers being contenders in Eastern Conference in the upcoming season? “Definitely,” Osman answered with confidence. -via BasketNews / September 3, 2022
Chris Fedor: The Cavs believed that their offer was going to be tough. That the best offer that they were willing to give to the Utah Jazz could have been beaten and maybe even should have been beaten by the Knicks or another team. The Knicks were always the most likely landing spot for Donovan Mitchell because they have a horde of draft picks. So when the Cavaliers and Jazz had conversations around summer league about two months ago, that’s when they first had the conversations. The cows left those conversations saying, yeah, probably not happening. Those weren’t very productive. They want way too much for somebody like Donovan Mitchell, and we just can’t do it. -via Apple Podcasts / September 3, 2022

Khalifa Diop, 20, a native of Guediawaye, Senegal, played last season for Gran Canaria in Spain, averaging 6.1 points, 4.2 rebounds and 0.8 blocked shots in 15.7 minutes of 49 games. President of Basketball Operations Koby Altman said Diop would remain in Spain next season under the watchful eye of ex-Cav Jose Calderon, now a special advisor to the front office.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have acquired …

The Cleveland Cavaliers have acquired the 49th pick in tonight’s NBA Draft from the Sacramento Kings (from Chicago via Memphis) in exchange for cash considerations and the draft rights to Aleksandar Vezenkov, Cavaliers President of Basketball Operations Koby Altman announced today from Cleveland Clinic Courts. The Cavaliers now have picks 14, 39, 49 and 56 in the draft.

“I think Oklahoma City has learned and …

“I think Oklahoma City has learned and most teams have learned, like, every year they’re going to say… there will be teams at one, two and three, and I’ll say because teams will tell me, ‘Hey, we’re going to see what the pick is worth in the marketplace. We’re going to listen. We’re going to see how people value it.’ “But it’s rare when somebody trades out of there. For all the picks the Thunder have… Koby Altman knew what he had [in Mobley]. I don’t think Sam Presti could have offered him enough to get him out.”
