Raiders quickly move on at OC, near deal to hire former Bears OC Luke Getsy

Raiders quickly move on at OC, near deal to hire former Bears OC Luke Getsy

It didn’t take long for the Raiders to move on from their deal with Kliff Kingsbury falling apart. Hours after realizing Kingsbury would not be taking the offensive coordinator job in Las Vegas, the Raiders are now reportedly working on a deal with former Bears OC Luke Getsy.

Getsy among just three candidates who had interviewed for the job with the Raiders along with UCLA head coach Chip Kelly and Steelers QB coach Mike Sullivan.

While Getsy was just recently fired by the Bears, he is the only of the three interviewed candidates who has recent offensive coordinator experience.

One of the interesting dynamics here is what this could mean for the possibility of the Raiders going after Justin Fields. Getsy was fired because he couldn’t make an offense led by Fields work at a high level. If the Raiders believe Getsy is worth hiring as their OC, it would seem they think the issue was Fields, not Getsy.

Another interesting tidbit is Getsy spent seven seasons in Green Bay, joining the team in 2014 — the same year Davante Adams was drafted. Two of those years he was wide receivers coach and another couple years he was passing game coordinator. So, yeah, the two of them are quite well acquainted.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves as we did when Kliff Kingsbury was also “expected” to be the Raiders next OC. Though usually when that word is used, it actually does happen.

Report: Commanders to interview former Eagles OC Brian Johnson for the same position

The Eagles went backward in 2023 with Johnson as offensive coordinator.

Saturday brought some news to the Washington Commanders’ search for a new offensive coordinator.

First, it was revealed that talks broke down between the Las Vegas Raiders and former Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury. Kingsbury had been expected to join Antonio Pierce’s staff as his new offensive coordinator.

Adam Schefter, Ian Rapoport, and others reported that Kingsbury interviewed with the Commanders and new head coach Dan Quinn and is considered a “strong candidate” for the position.

Now, another candidate has emerged, per Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report.

Brian Johnson, Philadelphia’s offensive coordinator in 2023, is expected to interview with Washington for the same position.

This news isn’t likely to excite Washington fans, and for good reason. Johnson, 36, was with the Eagles for the past three seasons and received a promotion to OC last season after Shane Steichen left to take over as head coach of the Colts.

Philadelphia’s offense and quarterback Jalen Hurts took several steps backward in 2023 under Johnson’s leadership.

A former college quarterback at Utah, Johnson began his coaching career in 2010 at his alma mater.

Kliff Kingsbury emerges as leading OC candidate for Commanders

After backing out of consideration for the OC job with the Raiders, he is now a favorite to join Dan Quinn’s staff in Washington.

Former Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury appeared to be set to become the newest offensive coordinator for the Las Vegas Raiders as part of the staff of head coach Antonio Pierce. Contract talks broke down and he withdrew from consideration.

However, he now appears to be a favorite for another team looking for an offensive coordinator.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, he is now a leading candidate to be the offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders. The Commanders just hired former Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn to be their new head coach.

Should Kingsbury end up with the job, he would likely get to work with a top rookie quarterback. The Commanders have the second pick in the 2024 draft.

The Cardinals will face the Commanders in 2024, so Kingsbury would also get to have a revenge game.

Arizona is still on the hook for the remaining four years of the contract he had with the team. Likely offset language means that, if he got hired by the Commanders, the Cardinals would only have to pay him the difference between what he is owed and what the Commanders pay him.

Kliff Kingsbury backs out of Raiders OC talks

Kingsbury backs out of consideration for the OC job in Las Vegas after contract talks break down.

Former Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury was set to become the new offensive coordinator for the Las Vegas Raiders under head coach Antonio Pierce. However, that will not happen.

After contract talks broke down, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Kingsbury withdrew himself as a candidate for the job.

Mike Jurecki reported that it came down to the number of years. Kingsbury wanted a three-year deal and the Raiders only offered two.

This doesn’t impact the Cardinals directly in terms of football, but it can impact them financially.

Because he was fired last offseason with five years remaining on his contract, the team is on the hook for the balance of the deal. However, offset language is common in NFL coaching contracts, so if he gets a job elsewhere in the league, the Cardinals would only pay the difference between his salary with a new team and what he is owed from his deal with Arizona.

Kingsbury was the Cardinals’ head coach from 2019-2022, going 28-37-1, making the playoffs once.

There is hope, though. He still could land a job elsewhere and is now a strong candidate to join the Washington Commanders.

Former Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury a ‘strong candidate’ to be Commanders offensive coordinator

Kingsbury spent the 2023 season at USC, working with presumed No. 1 pick Caleb Williams.

Two days after the Commanders picked Dan Quinn to be their head coach, we’ve begun to learn some of the names in contention to be his first offensive coordinator.

On Saturday, Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported that Kliff Kingsbury recently interviewed with Washington and is considered a “strong candidate” for the job.

Kingsbury, 44, was the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals for four seasons and had a record of 28-37-1. Before becoming an NFL coach, Kingsbury was head coach at his alma mater — Texas Tech — for six seasons, and he was Patrick Mahomes’ college coach.

Kingsbury is a protege of the late Mike Leach, who he played quarterback for at Texas Tech from 1998-2002.

Like Leach, Kingsbury runs a version of the “Air Raid” offense. However, during his time with the Cardinals, he modified his scheme to adapt to the NFL.

Kingsbury spent the 2023 season as an analyst for the USC Trojans under Lincoln Riley. It was during the last year he developed a close relationship with the presumed No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft, Caleb Williams.

The Commanders hold the No. 2 overall pick in the upcoming draft and are expected to select a quarterback.

Kliff Kingsbury’s abrupt departure from Raiders OC job sparked plenty of jokes

Well, that didn’t last long at all.

The Las Vegas Raiders had Kliff Kingsbury as their new offensive coordinator… until they didn’t.

On Saturday, news broke from ESPN’s Adam Schefter that a reported snag in contract negotiations led Kingsbury to withdraw himself from the role.

His departure leaves the Raiders now looking for a replacement after zeroing in on the former Arizona Cardinals coach to call plays on offense for Las Vegas.

While there are still quality candidates available for Vegas, it’s not common to see such a quick reversal after he was expected to land the job just a couple of days ago.

It’s a very strange series of events, as Schefter noted that Kingsbury is now being tabbed as a possible candidate for Dan Quinn’s Washington Commanders in the same role.

As you can imagine, NFL fans had plenty of jokes at the ready for Kingsbury’s abrupt departure from a job he was expected to land just a few days ago.

Kliff Kingsbury, in line to become Raiders’ offensive coordinator, changes his mind

It’s not the first time Kliff Kingsbury has changed his mind. USC fans know this.

Kliff Kingsbury will not be the Las Vegas Raiders’ offensive coordinator after all. Reports had emerged earlier this week that everything was just about set between the two parties. Saturday, however, Kingsbury basically opted out, as Raiders Wire has noted. It’s a notable change of mind for a man who has changed his mind before.

We all remember, in 2018, that Kingsbury had agreed to become USC offensive coordinator under Clay Helton. However, he never coached a down for the Trojans six years ago. He took the open head coaching job with the Arizona Cardinals.

Does this late switch mean that Kingsbury is about to agree to become the offensive coordinator for another NFL team, or that he might wait for a college job? Keep in mind that UCLA head coach Chip Kelly is not happy with his situation in Westwood. He might want an NFL escape hatch. Kingsbury going to the Raiders had seemingly closed the door for Kelly, who had interviewed with the Raiders multiple times. Maybe now Kelly can get the Raider job and create an open spot at UCLA as the Bruins head for the Big Ten.

Raiders to hire former Panthers RB Deshaun Foster as running backs coach

Raiders to hire former Panthers RB Deshaun Foster as running backs coach

The offensive staff in Las Vegas has begun filling out. Just a day after the news broke that they had landed on Kliff Kingsbury as their offensive coordinator, are reports his running back coach will be Deshaun Foster.

Foster was a former second round pick by the Panthers out of UCLA. He spent six seasons in the NFL, the first five in Carolina, with his final season in San Francisco.

Once his playing career was over, he returned to this alma mater as an assistant coach. He left for one season to coach running backs under Kingsbury before returning to UCLA where has been the team’s RB coach the past seven seasons.

Kingsbury clearly thought highly enough of Foster to pluck him out of the college ranks to join him again. And being that Antonio Pierce — a former NFL player himself — has shown a penchant for former players as position coaches, he is clearly onboard with the move too.

Kliff Kingsbury’s move to the Raiders might have affected UCLA football’s future

The Raiders interviewed Chip Kelly multiple times for their OC position, but Kliff Kingsbury won the job instead.

The football offseason contained a lot of coaching carousel questions and plot points. One notable drama revolved around Kliff Kingsbury, who was on Lincoln Riley’s 2023 coaching staff at USC and was expected to land an NFL coordinator job or a college job either as head coach or offensive coordinator. That drama came to an end on Thursday when it was reported that the Las Vegas Raiders had settled on Kingsbury as their choice for offensive coordinator. Raiders Wire has more details.

There had been speculation that the Chicago Bears might be interested in Kingsbury for their offensive coordinator spot, but the Bears chose Seattle Seahawk offensive coordinator Shane Waldron instead. The door was closed to the possibility that Kingsbury would call plays for Caleb Williams in Chicago.

Kingsbury’s move did not affect Caleb Williams, then. Kingsbury’s move to the Raiders might have affected someone else’s future, and by extension, the future of USC’s chief football rival, the UCLA Bruins.

Kingsbury, by getting the Raiders’ offensive coordinator job, prevented Chip Kelly from getting the same job. Raiders Wire picked up reports noting that the Las Vegas franchise interviewed Kelly multiple times for the offensive coordinator vacancy on new coach Antonio Pierce’s staff.

Kingsbury might have prevented Chip Kelly from leaving UCLA, something Bruin fans desperately want to see. Kingsbury might have therefore caused Chip Kelly and UCLA fans to be stuck with each other for another year, though Kelly might still try to land another NFL coordinator job.

Life works in mysterious ways.

Kliff Kingsbury leaves USC to become Las Vegas Raiders offensive coordinator

Kingsbury goes back to the NFL, not college.

Kliff Kingsbury is expected to join the Las Vegas Raiders as the offensive coordinator there, according to multiple reports, including one from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Raiders Wire has more on this story.

Kingsbury previously interviewed with the Chicago Bears for the offensive coordinator position there. With the Bears holding the No. 1 overall pick in April’s NFL draft, it was interesting to speculate on Chicago landing both Kingsbury and quarterback Caleb Williams from USC.

Kingsbury took over as USC’s offensive analyst this past year after the Arizona Cardinals fired him following the 2022 regular season. Kingsbury went 4-13 in his final season.

The former Cardinal head coach went 28-37-1 during his tenure in the desert with the NFC West franchise.

Kingsbury got his coaching start as a quality control coach with the Houston Cougars in 2008. He was promoted to co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach before signing on as Texas A&M’s offensive coordinator in 2011.

Two years later, Kingsbury would make his head-coaching debut for his alma mater at Texas Tech. He would hold that position until 2018, when he was fired by the Red Raiders.

Kingsbury then agreed to become USC’s offensive coordinator, but he resigned a month later for the chance at landing a head-coaching job in the NFL.
