Rutgers football OC Kirk Ciarrocca raves about Athan Kalaikmanis’ Big Ten experience: ‘There’s no substitute for experience’

The addition of Athan Kalaikmanis is an intriguing offseason story for Rutgers football.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — For Kirk Ciarrocca, familiarity bred a desire to be reunited with Athan Kalaikmanis. So when the quarterback entered the transfer portal after two years at Minnesota, Ciarrocca was ready.

The arrival of Kaliakmanis this offseason is a net positive for Rutgers, given his experience starting in the Big Ten. He is also experienced in playing for Ciarrocca, a point that factored significantly into his portal recruitment.

With incumbent starter Gavin Wimsatt already in the fold, Rutgers now has two quarterbacks boasting significant Big Ten starting experience.

Prior to arriving at Rutgers last year, Ciarrocca was the offensive coordinator at Minnesota. He recruited Kaliakmanis to the program and oversaw him getting playing time for Minnesota as a freshman.

“I think that was very attractive to us. You know, the fact that he knew the system. He knew me,” Ciarrocca said on Thursday following practice.

“I knew what his work ethic was like, I knew what type of person he was. I knew that he would fit into our culture. So I was really excited about the opportunity to bring him here because I know it strengthens our roster, and it was going to make the position better.”

Ciarrocca and Kaliakmanis had fostered a strong relationship in their one year together at Minnesota, and it was enough to pull the quarterback to New Jersey.

[lawrence-related id=36907,36896]

In now his second year at Rutgers, Ciarrocca worked a borderline miracle with the offense, turning around a unit that was among the worst in the Big Ten for much of the past decade and making them respectable. The one area that struggled with some inconsistency was the passing game and that is where Kaliakmanis enters the competition with some strength to his game.

But the building block for this offseason is going to be that Kaliakmanis has a familiarity with not just Ciarrocca the coach but also the man. It played a major role in the player and coach reuniting this offseason.

“I’m just very fortunate that they were interested when I was in the portal,” Kaliakmanis said on Tuesday.

“You know, the portal can be a scary place. I was very fortunate that a lot of schools (were) interested but very thankful that coach Ciarrocca and coach Schiano (head coach Greg Schiano) were interested in me.

“But yeah, I mean, our relationship is very, very tight. It was at Minnesota, and just picking his brain – he’s I think he’s a very, very smart coordinator. He’s very intelligent, and I trust him.”

He certainly adds a new dimension to the quarterback room. Last season for Minnesota, Kaliakmanis completed 53.1 percent of his passes for 1,831 yards with 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Last summer, Wimsatt was named the starting quarterback during Big Ten Media Days. The decision by head coach Greg Schiano ended any talk of a quarterback competition going into training camp.

Wimsatt started all 13 games for Rutgers last year, leading the team to a win over Miami in the Pinstripe Bowl. He made gains over the season before as he completed 47.8 percent of his passes. He threw for 1,735 yards with nine touchdowns and eight interceptions. In addition, he also ran for 497 yards and 11 touchdowns.

[lawrence-related id=36850,36870]

It should be a quarterback competition that stretches into the summer, but at the very least, the addition of Kalaikmanis gives the Scarlet Knights some much-needed depth at a vital position.

“He has a big-time experience, has been Big Ten starter. I don’t know. I think he started 16 or 17 games and the Big Ten,” Ciarrocca said.

“So there’s no substitute for experience obviously has some familiarity with the system and familiarity with me. So I think that helps them a little bit. But the biggest thing is it just it brings competition to the position. Maybe a little bit more stability there when you’re adding another quality guy out of position, adds depth.”

Quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis on joining Rutgers football: ‘I came here to win’

Athan Kaliakmanis talks about joining Rutgers football.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Familiarity with Rutgers football offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca played a role in Athan Kaliakmanis committing to the Scarlet Knights this offseason.

But make no mistakes about it, Kalaikamanis is here to compete and win with Rutgers.

Kaliakmanis transferred to Rutgers in early January, shortly after the Scarlet Knights won the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl over Miami.

In 2023 as a sophomore at Minnesota, Kaliakmanis completed 53.1 percent of his passes for 1,831 yards with 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

On Tuesday for the first time since he transferred to Rutgers, Kaliakamanis

“I came here to win, and to do whatever I can to help this team win,” Kaliakmanis said on Tuesday.

“So if that’s me putting my body on the line for my teammates, I’m willing to do it. I’m just willing to do anything I can to help this team win whatever the role that is, whatever the situation is. That’s what I want to do.”

In 2022, Kaliakmanis played well under Kirk Ciarrocca, then the offensive coordinator at Minnesota. As a freshman, he completed 54.1 percent of his passes for 946 yards, with three touchdowns and four interceptions.

[lawrence-related id=36832,36830]

Coming to Rutgers was in large part due to the presence of Ciarrocca on the staff. Last year, Ciarrocca was responsible for a dramatic turnaround of the Rutgers offense.

For much of the past decade, Rutgers has ranked near the bottom of the Big Ten in nearly every significant offensive category. Enter Ciarrocca, who made the offense viable in 2023.

“I’m just very fortunate that they were interested when I was in the portal,” Kalaikmanis said.

“You know, the portal can be a scary place. I was very fortunate that a lot of schools (were) interested but very thankful that coach Ciarrocca and coach Schiano (head coach Greg Schiano) were interested in me. But yeah, I mean, our relationship is very, very tight -it was at Minnesota. And just picking his brain, I think he’s a very, very smart coordinator. He’s very intelligent, and I trust him.”

Rutgers football transfer portal quarterback commit Athan Kaliakmanis on Kirk Ciarrocca: ‘I have a bond with him and trust him’

Athan Kaliakmanis talks about the Kirk Ciarrocca impact on his commitment to Rutgers.

The commitment of Athan Kaliakmanis last week is a significant offseason addition for Rutgers football. Kaliakmanis, who came to Rutgers out of the transfer portal, has Big Ten experience and will become an important personality in the quarterback room.

Kaliakmanis spent the last two seasons at Minnesota, and he was the Golden Gophers’ starting quarterback all of last season.

He was recruited to Minnesota by Kirk Ciarrocca who was then the offensive coordinator for the Golden Gophers. Ciarrocca joined Rutgers last year and helped turn the Scarlet Knights into a bowl team this past fall.

Kaliakmanis played for Ciarrocca in 2022 where he showed promise as a freshman.

The relationship between Kaliakmanis and Ciarrocca was key in the quarterback picking Rutgers.

[lawrence-related id=33781,33761]

Last week, Rutgers Wire asked Kaliakmanis what impact Ciarrocca had on the decision to join Rutgers.

“A huge role. I have known coach Ciarrocca since I was a sophomore in high school and committed to him pretty much right away,” Kaliakmanis told Rutgers Wire.

“I have a bond with him, and trust him. He is super smart and I cannot wait to work with him again. Coach Schiano and I hit it off from the first moment we met. He is transparent and honest. What really stuck out to me about Coach Schiano is how he feels about his staff and players and how he goes out of his way to make sure you have all the tools you need to succeed.”

Kaliakmanis visited Rutgers in early December. He made his commitment to Rutgers official last week, just days after Rutgers beat Miami 31-24 in the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl.

[lawrence-related id=33843,33814]

Last season was a solid one for, Kaliakmanis, despite Ciarrocca having left the program to join Rutgers. As a sophomore, he completed 53.1 percent of his passes for 1,831 yards with 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

“Rutgers checked the boxes for what I was looking for. The two biggest things for me were stability and a seasoned OC for my new home,” Kaliakmanis said.

“Next, was staying in the Big Ten. During my visit, everything felt right. The players, staff, facilities, and the overall vibe throughout the program. The decision was easy.”

Breaking: Rutgers football lands Big Ten quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis in the transfer portal

Athan Kaliakmanis is joining Rutgers out of the transfer portal.

The competition in the quarterback room just improved for Rutgers football. On Tuesday, Athana Kaliakmanis committed to Rutgers.

Kaliakmanis spent the previous two years at Minnesota, In 2022, he played under offensive coordinator [autotag]Kirk Ciarrocca[/autotag], who now has the same role at Rutgers. The quarterback took an official visit to Rutgers in mid-December.

With the Scarlet Knights, Kaliakmanis steps into an intriguing quarterback room that includes incumbent starter Gavin Wimsatt. Last week, Wimsatt led Rutgers to their first bowl win since 2014, capping off a season where he developmentally took a significant step forward.

This past season at Minnesota, Kaliakmanis finished completing 53.1 percent of his passes for 1,831 yards with 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions. His knowledge and understanding of Ciarrocca’s offense adds another dimension to the quarterback room at Rutgers that includes Wimsatt, promising true freshman Ajani Sheppard and incoming three-star quarterback A.J. Surace.

Kaliakmanis will be enrolling at Rutgers in January. He is the second big-time get for the Rutgers offense in the transfer portal.

[lawrence-related id=33671,33647]

Also in December, wide receiver Dymere Miller committed to Rutgers out of the transfer portal. In the FCS with Monmouth last year, Miller had 90 catches for 1,295 yards and nine touchdowns. In the season opener against FAU, Miller had 10 catches for 78 yards.

Bottom-line driven, Rutgers football OC Kirk Ciarrocca sees ‘normal growing pains’ from Gavin Wimsatt

Kirk Ciarrocca is pleased with the bottom line for Rutgers football’s offense this year.

There was some significant improvement seen from Gavin Wimsatt this season, as the Rutgers football quarterback took some developmental steps in his third year of college football. There were also moments of frustration and regression throughout the season.

And for [autotag]Kirk Ciarrocca[/autotag], in his first season as offensive coordinator with the Rutgers football program, the ups and downs from Wimsatt were to be expected.

Wimsatt threw for 1,651 yards with nine touchdowns and eight interceptions, marking the first time in his career that he had more touchdowns thrown than interceptions. He also had 488 rushing yards and nine touchdowns, a number always glossed over when talked about his development.

The source of concern for Wimsatt was his diminished play come the Big Ten schedule, where his turnovers went up and his completion percentage went down.

“I think Gavin is a guy that’s come a long way since January. He has improved every day,” Ciarrocca said on Monday during a press conference ahead of next week’s Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl.

“I think Gavin, if he was sitting here right now, would tell you that he needs to be more consistent with it, but like any young quarterback, he had some highs, and we had some lows, and then we had where we were just kind of in between that with it.

“For me it’s normal growing pains that you see in a young quarterback. The important thing is that he just keeps working hard and keeps learning from his mistakes and moving forward. He has a ton of ability. So we just need to see how he continues to grow.”

Wimsatt completed 47.8 percent of his passes this year, a career high. But it was still a disappointing number. He threw an interception in each of his last four games.

[lawrence-related id=33191,33179]

The completion percentage, Ciarrocca said, is “I don’t think that’s really relevant” when compared to other factors. And in his first year as the Rutgers offensive coordinator, there is no doubt that Rutgers did a better job as a unit of moving the ball.

The mentality from head coach Greg Schiano, according to Ciarrocca, is “the whole idea is to win the game on Saturday.” Wimsatt’s job is to get that done.

“Offensive football is the ultimate team game, and there’s 11 guys that are totally interdependent upon each other. That’s why when you see really good offensive football, it’s a beautiful thing to watch, but one guy is a little off here or one guy is a little off there, I mean, it can be ugly to watch, hard to watch sometimes,” Ciarrocca said.

“So I wouldn’t say anything is one particular player’s fault that we played a certain way or how we did it. I think that as an offensive coordinator – I think one of my strengths is I look at what the strengths and weaknesses are of the players that we have and try to mold things around their strengths and limit their weaknesses.

“Then you also try to think about what’s the whole team? I think coach (head coach Greg Schiano) is one of the best I’ve ever been around at being able to assess an opponent and have a picture for how he feels like the game needs to go.

“I always relate it to a boxing match. It’s going to be a boxing match. How do you want the fight to go in order to give yourself the best chance to win that particular fight? Do you want to pin this guy against the ropes? Do you want to dance around the ring?”

Rutgers, bottom-two in the Big Ten in 2022 in nearly every significant offensive category, was ninth in the Big Ten in total offense this past fall.

For perspective, Rutgers had the second-toughest schedule in college football this season.

Chase Enlow talks about his Saturday offer from Rutgers football

Chase Enlow talks Rutgers football visit and offer this weekend.

One of the top projected prospects in New Jersey’s 2026 class, Chase Enlow, was offered by Rutgers football on Saturday.

Enlow was offered by Rutgers on a visit to the program on Saturday.

A running back for The Hun School (Princeton, New Jersey), Enlow is coming off an impressive sophomore season. He ran for 527 yards on 58 carries and had 15 receptions for 233 yards.

Enlow had six total touchdowns on the season. The offer from Rutgers is the second from a Power Five program and the third of his recruitment.

Previous offers have come in from Boston College and Charlotte.

He was one of several high-profile recruits on campus on Saturday for unofficial visits at Rutgers.

“I mean, it’s great, it’s truly an honor to be offered by my home state university,” Enlow told Rutgers Wire on Saturday night following his visit.

“It’s even more of an honor because most of my family are Rutgers alumni.”

Currently, Enlow is an unranked prospect.

[lawrence-related id=33122,33112]

Enlow dove into how the offer came in on Saturday during his unofficial visit.

The offer was two months in the making.

“Coach Schiano first came earlier in October for a breakfast visit with the team,” Enlow said.

“The offensive coordinator ([autotag]Kirk Ciarrocca[/autotag]) visited again in the December recruiting period, saw my film, loved it, and invited me to the practice today. Toured the facilities, watched the practice, and got invited in to speak with coach Schiano. We talked about football and my personal journey with football, told me that he loved my film and that I was a gifted running back. After that, he told me that I was offered to play at Rutgers.”

The offer, Enlow said, was a real positive as was the entire visit to Rutgers.

[lawrence-related id=33075,33076]

“I feel great about the offer and visit,” Enlow said.

“It’s always an honor to visit Rutgers and being able to see the behind-the-scenes of everything they do.”

Greg Schiano addresses transfer portal quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis’ visit this weekend

Greg Schiano addresses the visit of Athan Kaliakmanis to Rutgers this weekend.

Athan Kaliakmanis is visiting Rutgers football this weekend, and head coach Greg Schiano is understandably tight-lipped about the circumstances.

A starter the past two years at Minnesota, Kaliakmanis taking a visit to Rutgers is intriguing because of the lack of quarterback depth on the roster outside of incumbent starter Gavin Wimsatt.

Last season as a sophomore,  Kaliakmanis completed 53.1 percent of his passes for 1,831 yards. with 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions for Minnesota.

The numbers between Kaliakmanis and Wimsatt are very similar which would be a boost for Rutgers. The only other quarterback on the Rutgers roster this past fall with significant snaps or starting experience, Evan Simon, entered the transfer portal last week.

Schiano was asked on Thursday about Kaliakmanis’ official visit this weekend to Rutgers.

“I’m not allowed to talk about individuals so I won’t but as I’ve said to you guys before, the transfer portal is very real part of college recruiting,” Schiano said.

“The way we use it is to bolster our roster. So if there’s a fit and it’s got to be first of all, it’s got to be a talent for you guys got to be a talented enough player that we believe he can help us win. But that’s not where it stops. It has to be a culture fit. And when you deal (with) the portal, if it’s not a culture fit, it’s a very dangerous thing, because you wouldn’t be bringing the player here if he wasn’t a good player.”

Wimsatt took a significant step forward this past season, showing greater poise and control of the offense. He is a good athlete, who was able to make plays with his feet when the pocket broke down.

[lawrence-related id=33076,33071]

Were Kaliakmanis to commit, Rutgers would be adding a quarterback alongside Wimsatt with significant starting experience in the Big Ten.

Schiano would not dive into any conversations he had with Wimsatt about the transfer portal quarterback visiting.

[lawrence-related id=33046]

“I’m not going get into all the personnel ins and outs…that’s, that’s internal,” Schiano said.

“Right? I communicate with the players – sometimes, they might tell you, I’m too, too brutally honest. But I just – that’s the way I’m transparent with them. I tell them everything. And I expect it to stay between the two of us, you know, and our guys are good like that. But I think they understand how serious that is to me. Trust is everything.”

Kaliakmanis was recruited two years ago to Minnesota by offensive coordinator [autotag]Kirk Ciarrocca[/autotag]. This year was Ciarrocca’s first year back with Rutgers as their offensive coordinator.

Kahden Davis previews Saturday’s Rutgers football visit

Rutgers football will host Kahden Davis on Saturday.

Projected to be one of the top players in New Jersey’s class of 2027, Kahden Davis will be back on the Rutgers campus on Saturday.

A 6-foot, 190-pound quarterback prospect at Seton Hall Prep (West Orange, New Jersey), Davis has the potential to develop into one of the region’s top quarterback prospects. He has made several visits to Rutgers this year with Saturday being another opportunity for him to connect with the staff.

Rutgers (6-5, 3-5 Big Ten) has taken a step forward this season in their fourth year of a rebuilding project under head coach Greg Schiano. Rutgers will look to achieve their first winning season since 2014.

They host Maryland (6-5, 3-5 Big Ten) on Saturday at SHI Stadium (3:30 p.m., Big Ten Network)

“I was invited by Rutgers recruiting staff. It’s very early in my recruiting process but things are going well with Rutgers,” Davis told Rutgers Wire on Friday.

“Every time I go it feels like home. Coaches like coach Shaw (running backs coach Damiere Shaw), Hewitt (Matt Hewitt, quality control) and Watson (defensive line coach Marquise Watson) always remind me that there’s no place like home.”

Davis will be watching to see how the Rutgers offense does against a solid Maryland defense. In their first season under offensive coordinator [autotag]Kirk Ciarrocca,[/autotag] the Rutgers offense has absolutely taken a step forward in their development.

[lawrence-related id=32392,32390]

The unit is viable and has moved the ball well, including out-gaining No. 3 Ohio State three weeks ago.

“I really like how they get their quarterback Gavin (Wimsatt) in space and involve him in the run game,” Davis said.

“I also love the vertical passing game they have been showing a lot of this year.”

His first Power Five offer came this fall from a Maryland program that Rutgers will face on Saturday.

[lawrence-related id=32383]

“It’s going well,” Davis said of his recruitment with Maryland.

“They saw enough in their initial evaluation process to offer me so that is a good start. I’m just going to continue building and working to get better every day.”

Penn State’s James Franklin on Greg Schiano: ‘I obviously got a ton of respect’ for the Rutgers head coach

Rutgers football head coach Greg Schiano is praised by Penn State’s James Franklin.

Ahead of Saturday’s game with Rutgers football, Penn State head coach James Franklin talked about the job being done by Greg Schiano. The Rutgers head coach has turned around the program and it is showing this season.

Rutgers (6-4, 3-4 Big Ten) plays at Penn State on Saturday (12:00 PM ET, Big Ten Network). The Nittany Lions are 8-2 (5-2 Big Ten).

Schiano, in his fourth year at Rutgers, has undertaken the slow and painful rebuild of a roster that was talent-deficient when he arrived back at the program. The Scarlet Knights are bowl-eligible for the first time since 2014.

The rebuild was put into overdrive this offseason with the arrival of Kirk Ciarrocca as the offensive coordinator.

Highly experienced within the college coaching ranks, Ciarrocca was an offensive coordinator at Penn State in 2020 as part of Franklin’s staff. In talking this week to reporters, Franklin praised the rebuilding effort of Schiano before talking about what Ciarrocca has added to the staff.

“I obviously got a ton of the respect for him and what he’s done throughout his career, and specifically at Rutgers. You know, his background as a defensive guy in the NFL, as well as in college. They do a really good job. He’s done it that way for a long time,” Franklin said during his weekly press conference of Schiano.

“If you look at the hire that they made with hiring Kirk Ciarrocca, we have familiarity with Kirk. Got a ton a respect for him. Been a really good hire for them and the complementary football they want to play.

“Obviously, Greg is very involved with special teams, has essentially always run the special teams, the way they play defense and Kirk’s been a really good hire. Kirk is on that staff. Also Dave Brock, a good friend of mine. Dave was my receivers coach at K-State (Kansas State). Really good ball coaches. Both have been at Rutgers before and are doing a good job for them.”

[lawrence-related id=32157,32136]

Since joining the Big Ten in 2014, Rutgers has never beaten Penn State.

What’s next for Rutgers football after bowl eligibility? ‘No limits’

Rutgers football is buzzing about ‘no limits’ placed on their season.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Now that bowl eligibility has been achieved, the next goal for Rutgers football is now undefined. The idea of ‘No limits’ is something that is now realistically taking hold within the program.

And while running the table in the four remaining games would seem a bit of a stretch, given that two top 10 teams remain on the schedule, it is clear that Rutgers is now playing with house money. ESPN, for instance, is now projecting Rutgers to finish 7-5.

The ‘CHOP’ mentality has not changed or even morphed. But the team appears to be blending the ‘No limits’ mantra this week to embrace the opportunity ahead of them.

Two months ago, the outlook nationally had Rutgers getting maybe four wins. Now with four games left in their season, Rutgers is chasing not just a plateau or a goal, but rather a mindset of being the best they possibly can be.

What that ends up looking like, they say, is up to them.

“The bowl is a ways away. We’re focused on this week, what we have to do for this game,” quarterback Gavin Wimsatt said on Tuesday.

“Coach – he’s been saying this all year: No limits. “No limits on hard we can work, what we can do as a team, what we can do to get better.”

Things like the Big Ten title and the Big Ten Championship are likely out of range for Rutgers, despite their solid record (6-2, 3-2 Big Ten). But getting one or two wins from their final four games would certainly be a step forward for the program.

[lawrence-related id=31592,31566]

Only once since they entered the Big Ten in 2014 has Rutgers had a winning season. One more win this season would get them there.

“Coach Schiano always says no limits. And he says no limits of how far you can go. how hard you can work,” guard Kwabena Asamoah told Rutgers Wire on Tuesday.”

“So you know, just working as hard as you can every day making every day as productive as you can.”

Wimsatt, who has developed nicely this season, sees the next four weeks as the opportunity for Rutgers to continue their program-wide growth. He refers to offensive coordinator [autotag]Kirk Ciarrocca[/autotag], in his first year with the program, as helping to personally shape that mentality.

[lawrence-related id=31602,31597]

“So it’s just like having that mindset where you can always get better at. You know, you never know it well enough,” Wimsatt said.

“That’s a thing coach Ciarrocca talks about – ‘You never know well enough’.Having that mindset (that) you’ll benefit from it. Every day you get better because you feel like you don’t know well enough. So you want to learn just that much more.”

Rutgers hosts No. 3 Ohio State (8-0,5-0 Big Ten) on Saturday at SHI Stadium (12:00 PM ET, CBS).
