King Green ‘not done’ after brutal wheel kick KO loss at UFC 313

King Green says ending up on the wrong end of a KO of the Year contender at UFC 313 is part of “the game we play.”

[autotag]King Green[/autotag] is taking his knockout loss to Mauricio Ruffy at UFC 313 in stride.

The longtime fighter ended up on the wrong end of the early Knockout of the Year frontrunner Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas when Ruffy (12-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) unleashed a vicious spinning wheel kick that instantly floored Green (32-17-1 MMA, 13-12-1 UFC) in the first round.

It was a spectacular and shocking end to the lightweight bout, which opened the pay-per-view main card. The finish went viral and was No. 2 on ESPN SportsCenter’s Top 10, and as the defeated fighter, it can be a difficult pill to swallow.

Green, however, was nothing but gracious in defeat.

“This is the game we play,” Green said on Instagram Stories after UFC 313. “There’s wins, there’s losses. It’s just how it goes, you know? Shout out to Ruffy. You did your thing, brother. I’d like to see you have success in your future. Obrigado.”

[lawrence-related id=2808948]

With the defeat, Green has lost three of his past four and is 3-3 in his past six dating back to a submission of Tony Ferguson at UFC 291 in July 2023. He’s also notched wins over Grant Dawson and Jim Miller, but in the losses during that stretch was finished in Round 1 by Jalin Turner, Paddy Pimblett and Ruffy.

The 38-year-old has been an active fighter since his January 2008 debut, and is one of just a handful of athletes on the UFC roster with more than 50 professional bouts.

Green is showing many of the traits of a fighter trending toward the end of their career, but he was definitive that this loss won’t be his end point.

“Shout out to everyone that rides with me and came through this whole thing,” Green said. “I love all you guys. I thank you so much for supporting me through all this bullsh*t. But we’re not done. I just need some more time to get myself back to the cage. We’ll be back.”

UFC 313 video: Mauricio Ruffy sleeps King Green with spinning kick Knockout of the Year candidate

Mauricio Ruffy opened the UFC 313 main card with a Knockout of the Year contender against King Green.

[autotag]Mauricio Ruffy[/autotag] opened the UFC 313 main card with a Knockout of the Year contender against [autotag]King Green[/autotag].

Ruffy (12-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) added to the octagon success of The Fighting Nerds when he uncorked a vicious spinning wheel kick that flatlined Green (32-17-1 MMA, 13-12-1 MMA) at the 2:16 mark of Round 1 in their lightweight bout at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Check out the replay of Ruffy’s handiwork below (via X):

With the stellar knockout, Ruffy stays unbeaten in the UFC and is looking to continue climbing the rankings at 155 pounds.

“Las Vegas, Mauricio Ruffy wants to fight Beneil Dariush,” Ruffy told Joe Rogan through an interpreter in his post-fight interview. “A fight night main event? What do you think?”

King Green vs. Mauricio Ruffy prediction, pick, start time for UFC 313

It’s a fan-favorite veteran vs. a fun rising contender to start the UFC 313 main card. Will Bobby Green stop Mauricio Ruffy’s momentum?

[autotag]King Green[/autotag] and [autotag]Mauricio Ruffy[/autotag] meet Saturday in the main card opener of UFC 313 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Check out this quick breakdown of the matchup from MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom.

Last event: 2-3
UFC main cards, 2025: 17-13-1

King Green vs. Mauricio Ruffy UFC 313 preview

Green (32-16-1 MMA, 13-11-1 UFC) has traded wins and losses over his past few outings, and comes into this one following what he described as a “blooper” submission loss to Paddy Pimblett at UFC 304. In the fight prior, Green picked up a unanimous decision win over fellow grizzled veteran Jim Miller at UFC 300. … Ruffy (11-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) enters on a six-fight winning streak, and looks to maintain his undefeated run in the UFC. The Dana White’s Contender Series veteran stopped Jamie Mullarkey in his debut and followed that with a unanimous decision over James Llontop to go 2-0 in his debut year.

King Green vs. Mauricio Ruffy UFC 313 expert pick, prediction

The paid portion of the card kicks off with a potential lightweight war between Green and Ruffy.

It’s nice to see the UFC matchmakers get back to Joe Silva’s tried and true method of opening main cards with lightweight fights.

In this case, Ruffy will look to make up for lost time and potentially raise his stock with a win over the always-fun Green.

A fighter with a criminally underrated style, Green has quietly been one of the best shoulder rollers in MMA (particularly in his prime). And if MMA judges were better about properly awarding clean counters and bodywork, then Green’s record could arguably look a bit different.

If this fight were a few years ago, I’d probably pick Green to give Rufft a veteran lesson by drawing out his shots and countering him in combination. But between Green’s suspect durability after his near-murder at the hands of Kerry Hatley to Ruffy’s power and proprioception, fans of the American may be in for a rough night.

Even though I not-so-secretly hope I’m wrong, the pick is Ruffy to break down Green with leg kicks and counters in order to force a stoppage in Round 2.

King Green vs. Mauricio Ruffy UFC 313 odds

The oddsmakers and the public are heavily favoring the Brazilian fighter, listing Ruffy -500 and Green +360 via FanDuel.

King Green vs. Mauricio Ruffy UFC 313 start time, how to watch

As the main card opener, Green and Ruffy are expected to walk to the cage at approximately 10:10 p.m. ET. The fight will stream on ESPN+.

UFC 313’s King Green reflects on ‘blooper’ loss to Paddy Pimblett: ‘I slipped on a banana peel’

King Green admits he dropped the ball against Paddy Pimblett.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]King Green[/autotag] admits he dropped the ball against [autotag]Paddy Pimblett[/autotag].

In his most recent outing, Green (32-16-1 MMA, 13-11-1 UFC) was quickly submitted by Pimblett at UFC 304 last July. Trading barbs with a big star in enemy territory, Green is irked that he wasn’t able to get the last laugh.

“I ain’t going to lie, bro. I’m going to keep this sh*t real with you – that sh*t hurt real bad because we were so (heated),” Green told MMA Junkie and other reporters at a news conference Wednesday. “I had to go all the way over to his pond and deal with all the craziness. I put it all on the line, and sometimes you f*cking go for the best, and sometimes you fall a little short.”

Green will look to rebound when he takes on another rising star in Mauricio Ruffy (11-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) in Saturday’s UFC 313 main card opener at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPNews/Disney+, ESPN+).

He chalks up his loss to Pimblett (22-3 MMA, 6-0 UFC) as a costly mistake.

“You ever heard of a blooper? Like a blooper reel when some guy slips on a banana peel and then he falls into a bucket, like some stupid sh*t like that?” Green said. “I’ve had so many fights where I’m like, ‘That’s new on my list.’ I went to go punch him, and he kicked my leg, and then I kind of slipped.

“I went down, so people were like, ‘Why did you shoot on him?’ I’m like, ‘Nah, I was already down there. I kind of just fell into it.’ So I shot and he capitalized on it, and it was a mistake I had made. I f*cking just slipped on a banana peel, and sh*t happens like that. I felt like I lost a Super Bowl.”

One of the toughest veterans in MMA will give a rising talent the chance to prove himself at UFC 313 when [autotag]King Green[/autotag] takes on [autotag]Mauricio Ruffy[/autotag].

Green and Ruffy have agreed to meet at the March 8 pay-per-view event from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Two people with knowledge of the situation informed MMA Junkie of the booking Monday night following an initial report from MMA Mania. The people requested anonymity since the UFC has yet to make an announcement.

Green (32-16-1 MMA, 13-11-1 UFC) tangled with a rising star in his most recent bout last year. In July, Green was submitted by Paddy Pimblett in the first round of their lightweight bout at UFC 304. Green, 38, has lost two of his past three bouts.

Ruffy (11-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) will be making just his third UFC appearance since earning a contract through Dana White’s Contender Series in October 2023. Ruffy, 28, beat Jamie Mullarkey with a flying knee and punches in his UFC debut and most recently claimed a unanimous decision against James Llontop last November.

With UFC retirement not etched in stone, Damon Jackson calls out King Green

Damon Jackson may be retired – kinda/sorta. Or, maybe like in “Friends,” he’s just on a break. Let’s go with that.

[autotag]Damon Jackson[/autotag] may be retired – kinda/sorta. Or, maybe like in “Friends,” he’s just on a break. Let’s go with that.

Jackson recently told MMA Junkie Radio the word of his retirement from the UFC may have been a little premature. He’s on a planned hiatus away from things, but expects it to be short – so short, in fact, that he’d take a return to the cage mid-year.

Jackson (23-8-1 MMA, 6-6-1 UFC) took his gloves off and left them in the middle of the octagon following his first-round submission loss to Jim Miller at UFC 309 in November. But he told MMA Junkie Radio that loss was in the wake of all kinds of issues outside the cage, and he thinks with those reasonably far enough in the rearview mirror, he’ll be back to his better form.

He even knows whom he’d like to fight: [autotag]King Green[/autotag].

“I’ve got a name right now, (even though I’m not officially back),” Jackson told MMA Junkie Radio. “I wanted to win that fight so bad (against Miller) and then I wanted to freaking call out Bobby Green – King Green. That was my goal, was to win that fight against Jim and then to go out there and fight Bobby.”

Green (32-16-1 MMA, 13-11-1 UFC) beat Miller in April 2024 a few months before Jackson lost to him, so Jackson said he watched plenty of footage of Green preparing for that fight. And in the process, he became a fan.

Green’s win over Miller was a bounce-back from a first-round knockout loss to Jalin Turner, but after the Miller win, he was submitted by Paddy Pimblett at UFC 304. With Green and Jackson both coming off losses, the timing could work.

“He’s such a ‘G,’ man. He fights so hard every fight – tough dude,” Jackson said. “I’m a bit of a fan of him watching him for a long time. (He’s) just tough as hell. After watching his fight with Jim over and over and over – because obviously I watch film on people – I just saw his style. Then I watched a few of his other fights and I was like, ‘Man, that would be a good fight.’

“I was hoping to win that fight and then to call him out, and I just got caught up in the moment (and lost).”

Jackson said he has three fights left on his UFC contract, and though he’s not in the drug-testing pool, he said he only plans to fight for the UFC.

Video: Reassessing Paddy Pimblett after UFC 304: Serious contender?

Is Paddy Pimblett now a serious contender after his UFC 304 win? We discuss on “Spinning Back Clique.”

[autotag]Paddy Pimblett[/autotag] impressed many in his most recent trip to the octagon – enough to have people reassessing his potential in the stacked UFC lightweight division.

This past Saturday, Pimblett (22-3 MMA, 6-0 UFC) submitted [autotag]King Green[/autotag] in brutal fashion on the main card of UFC 304 in Manchester, England. This was the first time that Pimblett faced and beat someone in the UFC’s official rankings.

The result leff questions in the MMA community: Who should be next for the British star, and how far can he go at 155 pounds?

MMA Junkie’s Brian “Goze” Garcia, Nolan King, Danny Segura and host “Gorgeous” George Garcia discuss Pimblett’s big win over Green, along with a few other key results from UFC 304.

King Green breaks down UFC 304 loss to Paddy Pimblett: ‘I got killed. Let the ridicule begin’

Bobby Green changed his name to King ahead of UFC 304, but ran up against someone many are ordaining a future king in his division.

Bobby Green may have changed his name to King ahead of UFC 304, but in his fight there, he ran up against someone many are ordaining as a future king in his division.

[autotag]King Green[/autotag] (32-16-1 MMA, 13-11-1 UFC) was put to sleep Saturday by [autotag]Paddy Pimblett[/autotag] (22-3 MMA, 6-0 UFC) in their lightweight bout, which was the featured fight on the main card at UFC 304 in Manchester – a home fight for Paddy “The Baddy.”

Pimblett’s win was his most impressive yet in the UFC and came against an opponent in Green whom many picked to be his first loss. Green posted on social media about a day after the loss and appeared to be focused on the likelihood he’ll get his fair share of trolling-type comments from fans.

[lawrence-related id=2758653,2757597,2758695]

“What a day. Thank you guys for checking in on me. I’m OK, I guess. Sh*t happens,” Green said in a video on his Instagram Stories. “I felt like I slipped into some sh*t and it all just went the perfect way. I had a bad night. No excuses. Sh*t happens. I live by a code: Kill or be killed. Today, I got killed. Let the ridicule begin. I know what comes with this. You guys can talk your sh*t. I know what comes with this. Let’s go.”

https://www.instagram.com/stories/bobbykinggreen/3422693005553169265

Green was in three straight bonus-winning fights in 2023, including back-to-back knockouts of Tony Ferguson and Grant Dawson. Ferguson is a former interim lightweight champion, and Dawson was unbeaten before he ran into Green – who knocked him out in 33 seconds.

Green was knocked out by Jalin Turner in late 2023, but bounced back in April with a high-profile win over Jim Miller at UFC 300 in Las Vegas to give him three wins in four fights until Pimblett halted his hope for momentum.

With the bonuses doubled to $100,000 for UFC 304 in Manchester, UFC CEO Dana White elected to give Pimblett a double shot of extra cash for $200,000.
