Moorehead has served as an assistant strength coach at Alabama since 2010. He played as a defensive tackle in the NFL for six seasons with Carolina (2003-07) and Atlanta (2008).

Moorehead played at Melrose High School in Memphis, Tennessee and collegiately at Alabama.

Report: Giants interviewed Kindal Moorehead for staff position

The New York Giants interviewed former NFL player and current Alabama assistant, Kindal Moorehead, for a staff position.

The New York Giants are inching ever closer to capping off their coaching staff rebuild, and only a small handful of position remain open.

One such position is along the defensive line, where Joe Judge was expected to hire Freddie Roach before he opted to return to Ole Miss and then immediately departed for Alabama.

Interestingly, it was another member of the Alabama coaching staff — assistant strength coach Kindal Moorehead — who served as one of the fallback options for Roach.

Dan Duggan of The Athletic reports that Joe Judge interviewed Moorehead for a staff position last week.

Look for Judge to fill out the lower level positions on his staff with people who have ties to Alabama. There surely are plenty of promising young coaches in the same types of roles that were once filled by Judge, who was an analyst on Saban’s staff from 2009-11 before becoming a special teams assistant with the Patriots. Those types of assistants will come with Saban’s stamp of approval and will understand how Judge wants his program to operate.

One such prospect is Kindal Moorehead, who is the assistant strength coach at Alabama. Moorehead, who played defensive tackle in the NFL from 2003-08, interviewed for a position on Judge’s staff last week, according to a source. Moorehead could be a candidate for a position like assistant defensive line coach as he looks to transition into an on-field coaching role.

A fifth-round pick of the Carolina Panthers in the 2003 NFL Draft, Moorehead spent six years in the NFL. He retired following the 2008 season after a brief stay with the Atlanta Falcons.

In 2010, Moorehead joined the staff at Alabama and has remained there ever since.

Also hidden in Duggan’s report is that the Giants wanted to add Mick Lombardi to their staff, but the request for an interview was denied by New England.

Judge had interest in adding Patriots assistant quarterbacks coach Mick Lombardi to his staff, according to a source. That request was not granted. One can make inferences as to why Belichick would give his blessing for some assistants to leave and not others, but don’t expect the taciturn coach to publicly reveal his decision-making process.
