WATCH: Texans CB Tremon Smith returns kickoff for 98-yard touchdown

Houston Texans cornerback Tremon Smith returned a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 15.

The Houston Texans had a boon occur on special teams against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 15 at TIAA Bank Field.

Cornerback Tremon Smith returned a 98-yard touchdown to give the Texans a 14-3 lead over the Jaguars.

General manager Nick Caserio told Sports Radio 610 on Dec. 7 that Smith’s improvement throughout the season is why they wanted to extend his contract through the 2022 season.

“He has come in and he has improved relative to what he’s done in previous places,” Caserio said. He’s had different opportunities, whether it’s defensively or in the kicking games. So, we’ve been pretty open-minded. I talked about this in terms of signing different players at different points or extending players at different points. So, the thing about Tremon here in the opportunity. He’s improved.”

Smith’s return for a touchdown was the first time since Oct. 4, 2009, when Jacoby Jones did it that the Texans returned a kickoff for a touchdown.

Ever have one of those moments where you panic and nothing seems to go right? Trey Palmer nearly had one of those instances Saturday night against South Carolina. Fortunately for LSU, Palmer managed to rebound quickly and give the Tigers a special teams touchdown.

Palmer mishandled a kickoff from South Carolina early in the third quarter, after the Gamecocks scored to cut into the LSU lead. Palmer collected himself, and the football, and then wiggled through some special teams traffic before streaking down the left side of the sideline.

If you were wondering the last time LSU returned a kickoff for a touchdown in Tiger Stadium, you were not alone. It turns out it was quite some time ago.

Eric Martin returned a kickoff for a score back on Oct. 17, 1981 against Kentucky. So, you might say Try Parker did something that hasn’t been done in generations of LSU football. Soak it all in now, because who knows if it will be another 40 years before it happens again.

Parker’s touchdown return gave LSU a 38-17 lead on the Gamecocks and added to the handful of highlights already witnessed Saturday evening in Baton Rouge.

Former Notre Dame Running Back George Atkinson III Dead at 27

When I think of George Atkinson, III I think of an explosive play-maker who had absolutely mind-blowing speed.  His kickoff returns against Michigan State and USC in 2011 immediately come to mind while he had plenty of other huge runs during his three seasons.

Sad news out late Monday night that former Notre Dame running back and speedy return-man George Atkinson, III has died at the age of 27.

Atkinson’s twin brother Josh, also a former Notre Dame football player died unexpectedly last year.

George Atkinson III played for the Irish from 2011-2013, rushing for 10 touchdowns and returning two kickoffs for scores, both occurring in 2011.

Atkinson left for the NFL after his junior year, where he’d spend time with the Oakland Raiders, Cleveland Browns and Kansas City Chiefs.

All the best to the Atkinson family and their friends in what has to have been an incredibly difficult year.
