VIDEO: Who could be the Secret Superstars of Super Bowl LVII?

In this week’s 4-Down Territory, Doug Farrar and Luke Easterling point to one player who could be a Secret Superstar in Super Bowl LVII.

Every week in “4-Down Territory” powered by KIA, Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar and Luke Easterling of Bucs Wire and Draft Wire go over the things you need to know about, and the things you need to watch, in the NFL right now. With Super Bowl LVII just around the corner, Doug and Luke get into which Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs players might transcend their underrated status to become the Secret Superstars in this game.

Every year, there’s at least one hidden gem of a player who comes out of nowhere and has the game of his life to propel his team to the Lombardi Trophy. Who is the one Secret Superstar for either the Philadelphia Eagles or the Kansas City Chiefs that you think could be the Secret Superstar of Super Bowl LVII?

Doug: I’ll pick Eagles defensive back Avonte Maddox. He’s missed time with injuries this season, and he’s working through a toe injury to play in the game, but the Eagles’ on-off splits when it comes to Maddox are pretty telling. Maddox has missed 595 possible snaps this season with hamstring, ankle, and toe injuries, and he’s been on the field for just 417. When he’s on the field, Philadelphia’s EPA allowed drops from -0.03 to -0.17, and EPA allowed is better when it’s negative. Philly’s passing EPA allowed dropped from -0.05 to -0.25, completion percentage allowed went from 67.2 to 60.0, yards per attempt from 7.3 to 5.4, touchdown rate allowed from 5.7% to 2.1%, and interception rate rose from 2.7 to 3.3.

The Eagles have great outside cornerbacks in Darius Slay and James Bradberry, so when you add Maddox in the slot, that allows Chauncey Gardner-Johnson to work more at safety, and Philly’s defense just comes together. Maddox will be a guy to watch on Sunday.

Luke: I’ll take Chiefs CB Jaylen Watson. Watson barely missed the cut for a third-round grade in my rankings heading into the 2022 NFL draft, but the Chief somehow landed him in the seventh round, and have been reaping the benefits throughout his rookie season. He had a huge pick-six earlier in the season, a clutch one-handed pick last week against the Bengals. He’s got a great combination of size, length, athleticism, ball skills, instincts…everything you want in a corner. A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith present a huge challenge for this secondary, but if the Chiefs pull this one out, don’t be surprised if Watson has a huge hand in making it happen.

4 Down Territory: Super Bowl LVII Predictions

NFL Wire editors Luke Easterling and Doug Farrar gives their Super Bowl LVII predictions for the Chiefs vs. the Eagles.

The conference No. 1 seeds in the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs are set to faceoff in the Super Bowl.

The Chiefs are led by the dominant quarterback, Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes is making his third Super Bowl appearance of his career, having won one previously over the San Francisco 49ers.

On the Eagles side is Super Bowl first-timer in quarterback Jalen Hurts. The Eagles have been dominant on their way to the championship winning their two previous playoff games by a combined 55 points.

4 Down Territory: Patrick Mahomes set to take on dominant Philadelphia Eagles

NFL Wire editors, Luke Easterling and Doug Farrar, break down the conference championships and the upcoming Super Bowl LVII.

The two home teams in the NFL championship games held serve this week with the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs punching a ticket to Super Bowl LVII.

The Chiefs won a nail-biter over the Cincinnati Bengals and Joe Burrow with some Patrick Mahomes magic with a score of 23-20.

Meanwhile, the Eagles have breezed through the NFC with dominant victories in back-to-back weeks over the New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers.

VIDEO: Was the AFC Championship game Patrick Mahomes’ best NFL performance?

Was Sunday’s AFC Championship game the best performance of Patrick Mahomes’ NFL career? Doug Farrar and Luke Easterling discuss it.

In this week’s episode of “4-Down Territory,” powered by KIA, Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar and Luke Easterling of Bucs Wire and Draft Wire went over the idea that Sunday’s AFC Championship game was Patrick Mahomes’ ultimate NFL performance.

In the Chiefs’ 23-20 AFC Championship win over the Bengals, Patrick Mahomes completed 29 of 43 passes for 326 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions, and a passer rating of 105.4. And he did it against a defense that had had his number in each of the last three times these teams played. Moreover, he did it on an obviously injured right ankle, and down multiple receivers due to injury. We’ve seen all kinds of amazing things from Mahomes since he started terrorizing the NFL in 2018, but was this the most impressive game of Mahomes’ NFL career?

Doug: I think it was. It’s certainly in the top two or three. In this spotlight, against a defensive coordinator in Lou Anarumo who had taken his  lunch money over and over, and down four receivers due to injury, Mahomes took the field (just barely), and you could see as the game went on that whatever he took to make his performance possible in the first place was wearing off. He was more and more hampered as things went along. And still, he got it done as he hadn’t before against this team.

The most remarkable turnaround came in the second half. The Bengals had made Mahomes look like an undrafted free agent in the second halves and overtime in the three previous Chiefs losses: He completed 25 passes on 44 attempts for 503 yards, no touchdowns, two interceptions, and a passer rating of 54.5. In the second half of this game, with his body and his receiver corps falling apart, Mahomes completed 16 of 24 passes for 161 yards, a touchdown, no picks, and a passer rating of 99.5. Mahomes doesn’t have a lot of demons to exorcize in his career, but he certainly took care of a few on Sunday.

Patrick Mahomes redefined his greatness in this AFC Championship victory

Luke: Yeah, we’ve seen some otherworldly things from No. 15 already in his career, but this was so important. Just like you said, the recent history against the Bengals, the high stakes, the injuries (both his own and his teammates’)…he had every reason to fold and let Joe Burrow take another one from him in front of his own home crowd. Instead, he delivered the kind of gutsy performance we’ll be talking about for years to come, especially if the Chiefs go on to finish the job in Arizona.
