Bills defense on doubters: ‘Somebody gives you motivation, you should take it’

Bills defense on doubters: ‘Somebody gives you motivation, you should take it’

The Buffalo Bills completed a perfect 10-0 run of home games this season including the playoffs and Sunday’s ice-cold 27-25 win over the Baltimore Ravens.

While the Bills offense usually grabs headlines, their defense shined in the win.

And they used the doubt and questioning heard in the outside noise of the media to motivate them.

“What were they all saying?” defensive tackle Ed Oliver asked postgame, via The Athletic. “I know you know. So what were they all saying?”

During the week leading into the matchup, the media scrutinized the Bills for not having enough size on defense to stop Ravens running back Derrick Henry or the ability to stop mobile quarterback Lamar Jackson.

“I didn’t hear nothing!” He replied to his own question with a smile. “I’m trying to get it right now. So they said we weren’t big enough, weren’t physical enough?”

The Buffalo defense held Henry to 84 yards while preventing any big breakout plays, and defended and limited Jackson.

The highest-graded Bill in the divisional round by Pro Football Focus (PFF) against the Ravens, defensive end A.J. Epenesa (82.6), commented on the motivation factor as well.

“We have a lot of pride in ourselves, what we do here as a defense,” Epenesa said. “Just speaking as a defense, we were told all week how they were going to do this, how they going to do that, and that just, I’d like to say, fueled us a little bit.”

While the Bills struggled to defend on third down, they forced three turnovers on the day including two on Jackson, and had 10 points off those takeaways.

And a motivational video helped fuel that effort as well.

“Our highlight video this week was all the media people, talking,” fellow defensive tackle Jordan Phillips shared. “They can’t do this. They can’t do that.’ Our coaches suck. We’re too small.

Well, now what?”

In the regular season, Buffalo finished with the third-most takeaways in the NFL in 2024 (32) and was facing the Ravens who were among the top clubs in the NFL at protecting the football. The question was which team would prevail.

“That was our motto all week: Let’s see who’s better,” Phillips added.

Buffalo’s offense seized those opportunities to add 10 points off the turnovers, and the team is now tied for the NFL record for consecutive games with an even or positive turnover margin (21).

All three takeaway plays were made by Buffalo starters who did not play the first meeting between the two teams in NFL Week 4 in Baltimore when the Ravens beat the Bills in the regular season.

Safety Taylor Rapp kicked things off early with an interception, outside linebacker Von Miller recovered a fumble, and linebacker Terrel Bernard caused and recovered a fumble.

“Biggest play of the game, bro. Not even close,” Bills cornerback Rasul Douglas said of the play by Bernard, who Phillips carried off the field in celebration.

“You try your best to ignore outside noise,” Bernard said, “but in games like this, moments like this, sometimes you can’t avoid it. We did see a video of outside people talking about what we can and can’t do.

“To make it this far in your career and to be a professional athlete, at some point you’ve been doubted. Everybody’s felt that. Everybody has had to deal with that. Somebody gives you motivation, you should take it.”

Bills’ Josh Allen: ‘We don’t listen to outside noise’

Bills’ Josh Allen: ‘We don’t listen to outside noise’

On the 216th birthday of writer Edgar Allan Poe, whose work the Baltimore Ravens are named after, the team poetically fell to another Allen as the Buffalo Bills beat them 27-25.

It was the latest instance of exceeding expectations for the Bills, written off by many as a rebuild project before the season even began and an underdog at home for the first time in franchise history.

“We don’t listen to the outside noise, but everyone was saying this and that about us and that we didn’t have enough talent, weren’t good enough to be in these positions and, our guys just continue to work hard and we’re internally driven,” Allen said to the press postgame. “We love each other, and I think you saw how much we played for each other there.”

The Bills ran a clean and conservative offense that leaned on the run game in the snowy conditions of Orchard Park Sunday night.

Allen went 16 of 22 for 127 yards passing with two rushing touchdowns, guiding the team to touchdowns on three of their first four drives of the game.

Buffalo would take a 14-7 lead by the second quarter and keep the lead the rest of the way.

Much like the outside noise about the team, their head coach had a similar perspective about their fans.

“Our guys heard it all — they heard it all week long. We’re not big enough, we’re not strong enough. Not talented enough. Whatever it is, they heard it,” Sean McDermott said.

The Bills had a win by way of complimentary football, with their defensive unit playing consistently strong while forcing three Ravens turnovers including two from Baltimore QB Lamar Jackson.

“We gave our defense a chance to go make a play,” Allen said of Sunday’s win. “We made a play there at the end. I’m just so proud of our guys.”

With the win, the Bills advanced beyond the divisional round of the playoffs where they’d exited the postseason for three consecutive years.

It will be the second conference title game that McDermott and Allen will have gone to, once more returning to Kansas City for a chance to redeem a 2020 loss in the AFC Championship to the Chiefs.

The Bills have won four regular season head-to-head matchups with the Chiefs with Allen under center and were the only team to beat them this season at home. During that time the Chiefs have beaten Buffalo in all three of their playoff matchups.

The Bills will look to avenge a 2020 AFC Championship loss next Sunday against their AFC rivals to take their place in NFL lore.

But to get there they needed to beat Baltimore first, and they did just that. Quoth the Raven, nevermore.

Sights and sounds from first half as Bills hold a 21-10 lead over Ravens in divisional round

Sights and sounds from first half as Bills hold a 21-10 lead over Ravens in divisional round

The first half appeared to be a reverse of Week 4, and two Lamar Jackson turnovers played a pivotal part in Baltimore trailing 21-10 after 30 minutes of football in Buffalo. The Bills held the Ravens to 73 yards rushing in the first half and 28 offensive plays. According to Next Gen Stats, Jackson has been under pressure on over half of his dropbacks (54.5%) for the first time since Week 4, 2023. He’s been pressured 6 times and sacked once on 11 dropbacks (as of Damar Hamlin’s strip sack).

With the second half underway, here are seven takeaways from the first 30 minutes.

Bills vs. Broncos: 3 key matchups to watch in Wild Card round

Bills vs. Broncos: 3 key matchup to watch in Wild Card round

The Buffalo Bills will host the Denver Broncos at Highmark Stadium in the NFL’s Wild Card round.

For this AFC battle between Sean McDermott’s Bills (13-4) and Sean Payton’s Broncos (10-7), it will be the games, within the game, that will make all the difference.

Here are three key matchups to watch during Sunday’s Bills-Broncos clash:

CB Christian Benford vs. WR Courtland Sutton

Imagn

Benford has been a quiet stud and many considered him a Pro Bowl snub. The Bills would be smart to put him on Sutton. Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix loves him considering Sutton had 1,081 yards this season, double anyone else on Denver’s roster.

NFL Playoff picks: Unlock exclusive data-driven predictions

OL Dion Dawkins vs. ED Nik Bonitto

Imagn

The Broncos defense thrives on sacks. Bonitto will likely come off the edge on Dawkins’ side. Denver led the NFL with 63 sacks as a team and 13.5 of those were from Bonitto which led the Broncos.

WR Khalil Shakir vs. CB Ja’Quan McMillian

Pro Football Focus grades Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II an 85.6 overall this season, making him their No. 1 corner in the entire NFL. The outside recievers for the Bills will have a tough day with him. That means Shakir will be a great option for quarterback Josh Allen on the inside. Denver’s slot cornerback is McMillan, who PFF only grades as the 78th best cornerback this year out of 116 qualifying players.

Buffalo Bills approaching multiple records going into Week 18

#Bills approaching multiple records going into Week 18

The Buffalo Bills far exceeded expectations in 2024 as they head into the season’s final week with a record of 13-3 and the AFC’s two seed locked up.

Despite already having their sights set on the postseason, they have a few records they could set in Week 18 against the New England Patriots.

With the team’s success, specifically on offense led by quarterback Josh Allen and offensive coordinator Joe Brady, they are now in a position to make more history:

Most players with a receiving TD in a season

With Tyrell Shavers’ long catch and run for a touchdown in Week 17, the Bills tied the NFL record for most players with a receiving touchdown in a season.

The following players caught a touchdown in 2024: Khalil Shakir; Amari Cooper; Keon Coleman; Mack Hollins; Curtis Samuel; Tyrell Shavers; James Cook; Ty Johnson; Ray Davis; Dalton Kincaid; Dawson Knox; Quintin Morris; Josh Allen.

With the Bills slated to play their backups for much of the Week 18 game, they have a good chance of breaking this record. Some players who haven’t had much of an opportunity this year will have the chance to be an NFL record-breaker.

Some potential practice squad guys who could find the endzone in Week 18 are TE Zach Davidson, RB Frank Gore Jr., WR KJ Hamler, and WR Jalen Virgil. If FB Reggie Gilliam scores his first TD of the year that would break the record as well. And, there’s always the chance an offensive linemen could catch one. Josh Allen caught a touchdown this year so nothing can be ruled out.

First team to pass and rush for 30 TDs in a season

Imagn

On the season, the Bills have compiled 33 rushing touchdowns and 29 passing touchdowns. No team in NFL history has had 30 of each in a season. The Bills can be the first to do so by throwing one more touchdown pass, and it could set this record as well as break the record above in one play.

Mack Hollins leads the team with five receiving touchdowns while James Cook leads the team with 15 rushing touchdowns.

Most wins in a regular season in franchise history

Imagn

The Bills have never had 14 wins in a regular season in team history. A win over the Patriots in Week 18 would cement this squad in its team history.

The Bills have now had five years in team history with 13 regular season wins: 1990; 1991; 2020; 2022; 2024.

Backups will likely see the majority of snaps in the game, but they could still etch their spot in team and NFL history with a strong performance.

Bills’ AJ Epenesa post-Jets win: ‘It just shows that this is what we can do’

Bills’ AJ Epenesa post-Jets win: ‘It just shows that this is what we can do’

The Bills won the second of their two regular-season matchups 40-14 Sunday, bringing the Jets a game closer to landing in their offseason.

The Buffalo defense returned to form following a three-game stretch in which they allowed 1,357 yards, 86 first downs, and 107 points.

“I thought coach (Bobby) Babich and the defensive staff did a great job during the week,” Bills HC Sean McDermott said to the media. “Players played extremely fast, physical. And then when you play physical and you play fast, the ball tends to come out and to find you.”

The Bills held Aaron Rodgers to 112 passing yards. They caused two interceptions by corner Christian Benford and defensive tackle Jordan Phillips, as well as a safety by defensive end Greg Rousseau.

“That was awesome,” Bills QB Josh Allen said about the defensive effort. “Playing on short fields, it makes the game a lot easier, I’ll tell you that. Our defense, man, they played lights out today. They had juice, they had energy.”

Defensive tackle Ed Oliver added three tackles, three for a loss, and a sack, and forced a Rodgers fumble that linebacker Matt Milano recovered. Defensive end A.J. Epenesa added four tackles, two for a loss, and a sack that led to a safety. And outside linebacker Von Miller had a sack, two tackles, and a tackle for a loss.

“Yeah, it was dope just for us to go out there and reap the benefits of our hard work, the work that we put in week after week,” said Rousseau who blew up a play for a turnover-on-downs and tipped a pass for the Jordan Phillips interception on another. “To have one of these games, it was great.”

The Bills built a 40-0 lead, shutting out the Jets for the first 53 minutes of the game until the 6:59 mark of the 4th quarter when former Bills QB-turned Jets backup Tyrod Taylor scored twice in relief of Aaron Rodgers.

“I wouldn’t say need … and I don’t want to say reassurance, either,” explained Epenesa about the type of game the defense had. “But it just shows that this is what we can do and this is the standard that needs to be upheld.”

For the Bills to have a chance at winning in the three rounds of the playoffs to make it to and compete in the Super Bowl, their defense will need to keep this type of performance going as just that type of standard game-to-game.

“Sometimes you just need that win to kind of refresh your mind on who you really are,” Oliver said. “Everybody had fun [and] everybody got a piece of the action.”

Bills’ Josh Allen on impressive Keon Coleman TD: ‘That’s why we drafted him’

Bills’ Josh Allen on impressive Keon Coleman TD: ‘That’s why we drafted him’

The Bills grounded the Jets 40-14 in their final home game of the regular season on Sunday in Orchard Park.

Buffalo figured to be active in their ground game with a poor Gang Green run defense, but QB Josh Allen also turned in some highlight reel plays in the passing game.

Rookie receiver Coleman had one of the biggest catches of his young career. He demonstrated his jump ball abilities to rise above defenders to grab a scoring pass from QB Josh Allen.

“Yeah that’s what it started out as,” Coleman said to the press postgame about the play starting as a cross route. “Josh scrambled and then I just tried to be QB friendly and then I don’t know he went all the way to the right he told me go back that way and then I went back, he let it go.”

GM Brandon Beane and the front office brought in some playmaking talent in the receiving department this offseason as well as before the NFL trade deadline, drafting Coleman with their top selection and later trading for WR Amari Cooper.

Both receivers showcased their athleticism in Sunday’s win, going up to make big-time touchdown catches.

“A lot of quarterbacks aren’t really willing to make those risks, but he has that talent to where he knows exactly where to put the ball, and as a receiver, we love that,” Cooper said about Allen “That’s like our favorite thing about a quarterback because it gives us an opportunity to express our talents, you know not all receivers can go up and high-point the ball but the ones that can when they have the opportunity to it’s what we love the most.”

Allen shared how the touchdown pass play to Coleman unfolded from his perspective as well.

“I got tossed down there late a little bit,” Allen told the press about finding Coleman on the throw. “Once the ball was in the air I was pointing at him and I threw it and I felt in the corner of my eye Ty Johnson and I think Quincy Williams over there and I was like ‘oh shoot they’re going to be both in the same spot’ but that’s the reason why we drafted zero to go up and make plays like that and he made a heck of a play.”

As for Coleman, he was focused on making the play and wasn’t worried about the threat of the Jets’ coverage.

I ain’t worried about them, I just checked to see who was right there,” he added. “Jumping that high they going to have to undercover to get the ball out my hand so that’s it.”

Sean McDermott, Bills teammates make case for Josh Allen as MVP

Sean McDermott, Bills teammates make case for Josh Allen as MVP

The Buffalo Bills routed the New York Jets in Week 17, and in no surprise, Josh Allen played his part.

The QB was 16-for-27 passing with 182 passing yards yards and three total touchdowns in the 40-14 win. The Bills (13-3) could have gotten more out of Allen but after a certain point even the Jets (4-12) pulled their starters it was such a blowout.

With his effort, Allen made another claim for the 2024 NFL MVP Award which he’s the favorite to win… and many of those around Buffalo’s locker room backed that idea after the game.

Even head coach Sean McDermott did.

“Josh Allen is the MVP,” McDermott said.

Allen’s teammates including Amari Cooper, Von Miller, Spencer Brown and Khalil Shakir all felt the same.

All of their thoughts (and campaigning for Allen winning) can be found in a roundup below:

3 keys to a Bills victory vs. the Jets in Week 17

3 keys to a Bills victory vs. the Jets in Week 17

The Buffalo Bills will play the New York Jets at home at Highmark Stadium in Week 17.

With a win, the Bills (12-3) would post a perfect record in Orchard Park this season. They have won nine of their last 10 in total. The Jets (4-11) have lost five of six.

The Bills are favored by 9.5 points. In the first matchup best these two AFC East foes in Week 6, the Bills skated by with a 23-20 victory.

Even though the Jets have four wins this year, nothing is guaranteed in the NFL. Buffalo will need to execute its game plan to pick up its 13th win of the year.

With that, here are three keys to a Bills win in Week 17:

Get it going on the ground

Getty Images

Bills running back James Cook had an efficient day on the ground against the New England Patriots in Week 16. He carried it 11 times and recorded 100 rushing yards (9.1 avg), including a 46-yard run for a touchdown.

In Week 17, Buffalo faces a Jets team that ranks 23rd in the NFL in defense rushing DVOA. Last week in a loss to the LA Rams, the Jets allowed running back Kyren Williams to rush for 122 yards and a touchdown at 5.3 yards per carry.

Opportunities should arise for the Bills’ runners on Sunday if they remain dedicated to the run game.

More production from pass catchers

Imagn Images

No player on the Bills roster had more than 26 receiving yards in last week’s win over the Patriots. Cook led the team, Mack Hollins had 25 yards, and Dawson Knox and Khalil Shakir each had 22 yards.

Having production from the pass catchers will make life easier for Josh Allen and the Bills against the Jets. If they are going to be vanilla with their play calling over the last few weeks, receivers are going to need to win one-on-one matchups.

An impact from the defensive line

USA Today Sports

The Jets, even at 4-11, are still a capable offense when they get into a rhythm. Led by Aaron Rodgers under center, they have playmakers who can rip you apart like Davante Adams, Garrett Wilson, and Breece Hall.

If Rodgers has the time to sit back and go through progressions, life will be difficult for the Bills on Sunday, especially given their injuries on the back end. Three safeties are questionable: Damar Hamlin; Taylor Rapp; Cam Lewis. An impact from the defensive line, both against the run and the pass, would go a long way toward a Bills victory.

Bills vs. Jets: 3 key matchups to watch in Week 17

Bills vs. Jets: 3 key matchups to watch in Week 17

The Buffalo Bills will host the New York Jets at Highmark Stadium in Week 17.

For this AFC East battle between Sean McDermott’s Bills (12-3) and Jeff Ulbrich’s Jets (4-11), it will be the games, within the game, that will make all the difference.

Here are three key matchups to watch during Sunday’s Bills-Jets contest:

CB Christian Benford vs. WR Garrett Wilson

Getty

With Rasul Douglas (knee) back in the lineup, he’ll likely cover Davante Adams for the Bills defense. That leaves Benford against Wilson. The two had a great battle earlier this season in Week 6 and the Jets’ playmaker might have won that with his toe-tapping touchdown.

RB James Cook vs. LB Jamien Sherwood

Getty

The rushing attack is a team effort for both the offense and defense. However, these two will lead that area for their respective sides.

Sherwood has filled in for CJ Mosley (neck) for most of the year and has been productive for the Jets. The Bills have leaned on Cook in certain games, especially when the weather is a factor, like they did last week against the New England Patriots.

Can Cook provide a positive running game for the Bills? He did not play in the first matchup between these two rivals because of a knee injury.

WR Khalil Shakir vs. CB Isaiah Oliver

Getty

Speaking of the weather, Bills quarterback Josh Allen will want a better showing in Orchard Park than he did against the Pats. His go-to man is usually Shakir out of the slot regardless of Mother Nature.

In his own right, Oliver has had a solid year. Pro Football Focus grades him a positive 68.8 overall mark according to their metrics this season.
