UFC Fight Night 209 video: Mexico’s Cristian Quinonez puts away Khalid Taha with punches early

It was a quick night in Paris for both Cristian Quinonez and Khalid Taha as the fight ended in a (protested) first-round TKO.

PARIS – [autotag]Cristian Quinonez[/autotag]’s debut came 11 months after his UFC signing, but his performance was worth the wait.

In a short-notice bout at UFC Fight Night 209, Quinonez (17-3 MMA, 1-0 UFC) defeated [autotag]Khalid Taha[/autotag] (13-5 MMA, 1-4 UFC) via first-round TKO due to punches. The bout served as the second prelim on the promotion’s first card in France, which took place Saturday in Paris.

After some back-and-forth on the feet, Quinonez floored and finished Taha with a series of punches en route to a stoppage at 3:15 of Round 1. It was a counter right hand that floored Taha initially. He fell forward, then adjusted so his back was on the canvas. It didn’t matter though. Quinonez followed him and landed a handful of more punches as Taha covered up.

Referee Rich Mitchell dove in for a stoppage Taha protested thereafter.

A Dana White’s Contender Series signee, Quinonez extends his winning streak to five. Meanwhile, Taha falls to 0-3 with one no contest (due to a drug test failure) in his most recent four outings.

UFC Fight Night 209 pre-event facts: Can Tai Tuivasa keep UFC-best KO streak alive?

Tai Tuivasa’s run of five straight octagon knockouts is in danger as he enters the UFC Fight Night 209 main event as an underdog.

The UFC enters a new territory in France on Saturday with UFC Fight Night 209, which takes place at Accor Arena in Paris with a 12-fight lineup that streams on ESPN+.

A heavyweight matchup takes center stage on the card, with France’s own [autotag]Ciryl Gane[/autotag] (10-1 MMA, 7-1 UFC) looking to bounce back from his first career defeat against Francis Ngannou in January when he meets streaking knockout artist [autotag]Tai Tuivasa[/autotag] (15-3 MMA, 8-3 UFC) in a bout with significant title stakes.

For more on the numbers behind the headliner, as well as the rest of the card, check below for MMA Junkie’s pre-event facts about UFC Fight Night 209.

Julian Marquez, Austin Lingo out of UFC Fight Night 201 matchups

Next week’s UFC Fight Night 201 card suddenly has started to take a few hits to the lineup.

Next week’s UFC Fight Night 201 card suddenly has started to take a few hits to the lineup.

[autotag]Julian Marquez[/autotag] (9-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC) is out of his middleweight matchup against [autotag]Kyle Daukaus[/autotag] (10-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC). A person with knowledge of the matchup confirmed the news to MMA Junkie on Tuesday. The person requested anonymity because the UFC has not yet made a formal announcement.

In addition, [autotag]Austin Lingo[/autotag] (9-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) is out of his featherweight fight against [autotag]Jonathan Pearce[/autotag] (11-4 MMA, 2-1 UFC). It is not yet known if Daukaus or Pearce will remain on the card against new opponents.

UFC Fight Night 201 takes place Feb. 19 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card streams on ESPN+.

Marquez has post-fight bonuses in two straight fights. He submitted Maki Pitolo and, most recently, Sam Alvey at UFC on ABC 2 in April 2021. Marquez was scheduled to face Jordan Wright at UFC Fight Night 195 this past October, but the fight was canceled when Marquez withdrew with non-COVID health issues.

Daukaus, a former CFFC middleweight champion, is coming off a no contest against Holland this past October. Originally a submission win for Daukaus, the decision was overturned after replays revealed an accidental clash of heads knocked Holland unconscious and led to the fight-ending sequence.

Daukaus was supposed to fight Holland in a rematch at UFC Fight Night 197 this past November. Holland had to pull out with an injury. Then replacement Roman Dolidze was pulled due to COVID-19 protocols. Now his fight with Marquez, which was booked shortly after the Dolidze cancellation, is off.

With the changes, the UFC Fight Night 201 lineup now includes:

  • Rafael dos Anjos vs. Rafael Fiziev
  • Jamahal Hill vs. Johnny Walker
  • Jessica-Rose Clark vs. Stephanie Egger
  • Chad Anheliger vs. Jesse Strader
  • Chas Skelly vs. Mark Striegl
  • Diana Belbita vs. Gloria de Paula
  • Kyle Daukaus vs. TBA
  • Abdul Razak Alhassan vs. Joaquin Buckley
  • Jim Miller vs. Nikolas Motta
  • Jonathan Pearce vs. TBA
  • Mario Bautista vs. TBA
  • Alan Baudot vs. Parker Porter
  • Gabriel Benitez vs. David Onama

The UFC is back in its home base this week with a pair of former title challengers in the main event.

UFC on ESPN+ 40 takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card streams on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, [autotag]Thiago Santos[/autotag] (21-7 MMA, 13-6 UFC) takes on [autotag]Glover Teixeira[/autotag] (31-7 MMA, 14-5 UFC) at light heavyweight. The winner will stay in the title picture. Santos is more a -250 favorite at BetMGM; the comeback on Teixeira is +200. Among our 14 editors, writers, videographers and radio hosts, only two are taking Teixeira in an upset.

In the co-feature, former UFC heavyweight champion [autotag]Andrei Arlovski[/autotag] (29-19 MMA, 18-13 UFC) takes on [autotag]Tanner Boser[/autotag] (19-6-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC). Boser is a -313 favorite, but he has just a 9-5 lead over Arlovski in the picks.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Raoni Barcelos[/autotag] (15-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC) meets [autotag]Khalid Taha[/autotag] (14-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) in a bantamweight bout. Barcelos is a heavy -371 favorite and has a big 11-3 picks lead.

[autotag]Brendan Allen[/autotag] (15-3 MMA, 3-0 UFC) fights [autotag]Ian Heinisch[/autotag] (14-3 MMA, 3-2 UFC) in a middleweight bout that is a pick’em with the oddsmakers. It’s close among our pickers, too, with an 8-6 lead for Allen.

And to open the main card, former women’s strawweight title challenger [autotag]Claudia Gadelha[/autotag] (18-4 MMA, 7-4 UFC) takes on [autotag]Yan Xiaonan[/autotag] (12-1 MMA, 5-0 UFC). Xiaonan is a -162 favorite, but it’s Gadelha with an 8-6 picks lead.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Santos (72 percent), Boser (71 percent), Barcelos (83 percent), Allen (51 percent) and Gadelha (53 percent) are the choices.

Check out all the picks above.
