Khadzhi Bestaev surprised he won – and thought about quitting in Round 1 at Bellator 264

The fans at Mohegan Sun Arena seemed surprised to hear Khadzhi Bestaev’s name called as the winner against Ty Gwerder. So did he.

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – The fans at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., seemed surprised to hear [autotag]Khadzhi Bestaev[/autotag]’s name called as the winner against Ty Gwerder.

And maybe they had good reason. Their reaction at Bellator 264 has a lot of validity added to it if Bestaev himself was surprised at the outcome.

Bestaev (11-4 MMA, 1-0 BMMA), who was making his promotional debut, took a unanimous decision from Hawaii’s Gwerder (5-3 MMA, 1-3 BMMA) on the preliminary card. All three judges gave Bestaev the second and third rounds.

Gwerder took the first round thanks to a big head kick that put Bestaev on the canvas. But Gwerder couldn’t finish him, and ultimately that cost him.

“After he kicked me, I’m like, ‘I think it’s time to give up,'” Bestaev told MMA Junkie at the post-fight news conference. “And them I’m staying. I’m like, ‘I think I’m going to keep going.’ And then another punch – one-two. I’m like, ‘F*ck. It hurt. I want to give up now.’ … Second round, he hurt me again.”

Despite losing the first, and saying he was sure Gwerder would start to tire in the second and third rounds, Bestaev wasn’t sure he’d have his hand raised after 15 minutes.

If anything, he wondered if Gwerder’s hand would be up along with his.

“I’m still surprised with the decision,” he said. “I think it was a draw or a split decision. But I didn’t see the fight. I have to see it. In my head, he kicked and punched me so many times. … I dropped him a couple of times. I tried to finish him. Ask my (Brazilian jiu-jitsu) coach: Nobody gets away from my triangle (choke). He got away three times. That means something. … He’s tough.”

Bellator is back in Connecticut this week, and the middleweight title is on the line.

Bellator 264 takes place Friday at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The main card airs on Showtime following prelims on MMA Junkie.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, middleweight champion [autotag]Gegard Mousasi[/autotag] (47-7-2 MMA, 5-1 BMMA) puts his title up against challenger [autotag]John Salter[/autotag] (18-4 MMA, 8-1 BMMA). Mousasi is fighting for the first time since he recaptured the 185-pound title in October 2020 against Douglas Lima, and all 13 of our editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers are picking him to defend the belt.

In the co-feature, [autotag]Sabah Homasi[/autotag] (15-9 MMA, 4-3 BMMA) takes on former welterweight champion [autotag]Andrey Koreshkov[/autotag] (23-4 MMA, 13-4 BMMA). Our staff members are picking the ex-champ by a wide margin at 12-1.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Magomed Magomedov[/autotag] (18-1 MMA, 2-0 BMMA) is a runaway pick in his bantamweight fight against [autotag]Raufeon Stots[/autotag] (16-1 MMA, 4-0 BMMA). Magomedov has a 10-3 lead in the picks.

Our most contentious fight is at heavyweight between [autotag]Everett Cummings[/autotag] (15-0 MMA, 2-0 BMMA) and [autotag]Davion Franklin[/autotag] (3-0 MMA, 3-0 BMMA). The top five pickers in our standings all like Franklin. But the lower eight all are going with Cummings.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Khadzhi Bestaev[/autotag] (10-4 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) takes on [autotag]Ty Gwerder[/autotag] (5-2 MMA, 1-2 BMMA) in a middleweight bout. Hawaii’s Gwerder has a sizable 9-4 edge in the picks from our staff members.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Mousasi (82 percent), Koreshkov (85 percent), Magomedov (76 percent), Cummings (51 percent) and Bestaev(64 percent) are the choices.

Video: UFC hopeful Phil Hawes crumples DWCS 32 opponent, scores 78-second TKO

Three years after his first DWCS appearance, Phil Hawes redeemed himself with a major TKO.

The second time was the charm for [autotag]Phil Hawes[/autotag].

After a failed attempt on Dana White’s Contender Series, Season 1, Hawes (8-2) made his second appearance on the series Tuesday.

Over three years after his first DWCS fight, Hawes redeemed himself. Taking on American Kickboxing Academy’s [autotag]Khadzhi Bestaev[/autotag] (10-4), Hawes picked up a 78-second TKO victory in brutal fashion.

A strong wrestler, Hawes had Bestaev thinking about takedowns – noticeably so. Bestaev, a 6’6″ middleweight, held his hands low. Hawes flipped the script, however, landing hard leg kicks that threw Bestaev off balance.

The finishing combination started off with a hard right hand that floored Bestaev. From there, Hawes pounced. Heavy ground-and-pound rained down, leaving Chris Tognoni no option but to waive off the fight.

Check out Phil Hawes’ TKO of Khadzhi Bestaev in the video clip below:

DWCS 32 took place Tuesday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas and streamed on ESPN+.
