Spinning Back Clique: Maybe let’s cut MMA referees some slack?

As was highlighted during the UFC’s return in Jacksonville, can we all agree that MMA referees have a tough job?

Welcome to “Spinning Back Clique,” MMA Junkie’s weekly show that takes a spin through the biggest topics in mixed martial arts. In this week’s episode, Simon Head fills in to host while “Gorgeous” George, “Goze” and special guest Farah Hannoun recap the UFC’s week in Jacksonville and more. Let’s go!

SHOW RUNDOWN:

  • At UFC on ESPN+ 29 last Wednesday, the controversy was about referee Jason Herzog allowing Glover Teixeira to beat up Anthony Smith for far too long – prompting an apology from Herzog himself. Then at UFC on ESPN 8 on Saturday, it was about whether referee Dan Miragliotta should’ve stopped it sooner while Walt Harris was swarming Alistair Overeem in the first round – but he didn’t, and Overeem rallied to score a finish of his own. When we see two instances like these, does that underscore the need to cut MMA referees some slack when it comes to appropriate timing of stoppages?
  • Between UFC on ESPN+ 29 and UFC on ESPN 8, we saw a lot of standout performances. Who was the MVP between the two shows?
  • UFC president Dana White said the promotion’s return during the coronavirus pandemic was “successful in every way.” Do we agree with that assessment?
  • [autotag]Jon Jones[/autotag] vs. [autotag]Francis Ngannou[/autotag] is now a thing that’s being seriously talked about after the two men have been going back and forth on Twitter. Jones, the UFC light heavyweight champion, has long flirted with the idea of moving up to heavyweight. Is this the fight to make?
  • Former UFC champion [autotag]Kevin Randleman[/autotag], who died in 2016, was announced as an inductee into the UFC Hall of Fame pioneer wing. We take a trip down memory lane and remember what “The Monster” meant to the sport.

For answers to all of those questions, watch Episode 28 of “Spinning Back Clique” above.

THE RUNDOWN

  • In the UFC on ESPN 8 main event, [autotag]Alistair Overeem[/autotag] rallied to score a second-round TKO win over [autotag]Walt Harris[/autotag]. Now, it was Harris who swarmed Overeem early, but referee Dan Miragliotta elected not to stop the fight, which allowed Overeem’s comeback. Should it have been stopped in the first?
  • There were judging controversies throughout UFC on ESPN 8, with [autotag]Claudia Gadelha[/autotag], [autotag]Dan Ige[/autotag] and [autotag]Song Yadong[/autotag] all coming away with questionable decision wins. We break down each result.
  • Former UFC champion [autotag]Kevin Randleman[/autotag] will be inducted into the Hall of Fame. We explain why it’s such an appropriate honor.
  • [autotag]Jon Jones[/autotag] is chirping, talking about moving up to fight Francis Ngannou and how he wants more money. Could he hold the UFC hostage?
  • [autotag]Justin Gaethje[/autotag] is giving [autotag]Conor McGregor[/autotag] a taste of his own medicine. What do we think of that?
  • [autotag]Henry Cejudo[/autotag]’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, says he doesn’t expect the UFC champ’s retirement to last. Are we surprised?

Former Ohio State wrestler Kevin Randleman to be inducted into UFC Hall of Fame

Former Ohio State wrestler Kevin Randleman will be inducted into Pioneer wing of the UFC Hall of Fame.

Former Ohio State and three-time NCAA wrestling All-American Kevin Randleman will be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame. The announcement came Saturday night during the UFC’s Fight Night 176.

Randleman wrestled for Ohio State from 1991-1993. He won the Big Ten title all three years, with two NCAA championships in both 1992 and 1993, but fell just shy of winning his freshman season in the NCAA final. After being a three-time All-American, he was ruled ineligible his senior season because of academic issues.

After his collegiate career, Randleman joined mixed martial arts and competed in not only the UFC, but PRIDE, WVR, and Strikeforce. It was with the UFC that Randleman was able to take hold right when things were really taking off in the world of MMA. He eventually became the UFC Heavyweight Champion in 1999, successfully defending his title once, before moving down to Light Heavyweight and also winning that title in his final bout with the UFC.

Randleman will be going into the Pioneer wing of the UFC Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Ohio State Hall of Fame in 2004, and sadly passed away in 2016.

Former UFC champion Kevin Randleman to be inducted into UFC Hall of Fame

Kevin Randleman becomes the 17th member of the Pioneer Era wing of the UFC Hall of Fame.

[autotag]Kevin Randleman[/autotag] soon will be part of the UFC Hall of Fame.

The former UFC heavyweight champion, who died in 2016, will be inducted into the Pioneer Wing of the UFC Hall of Fame later this year. The news was announced during Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 8 broadcast.

“Kevin Randleman was one of the first real athletes in the early days of UFC,” UFC president Dana White said in a press release. “He was a two-time NCAA Division-I national champion and All-American wrestler at The Ohio State University. He was the fifth heavyweight champion in UFC history and one of the first athletes to successfully compete at both heavyweight and light heavyweight. He was a pioneer of the sport and it’s an honor to induct him into the UFC Hall of Fame Class of 2020.”

Randleman (17-16 MMA, 4-3 UFC) died of a heart attack in February 2016 at 44. He becomes the 17th member of the Pioneer Era wing, a category that includes athletes who turned professional before Nov. 17, 2000.

Randleman won the vacant UFC heavyweight title in 1999, defeating Pete Williams by decision at UFC 23. Randleman defended the belt once, outpointing Pedro Rizzo at UFC 26 in 2000, but lost the title to Randy Couture a few months later.

Randleman is also know for his stint in PRIDE, where he competed 11 times, sharing the ring with some of the best fighters of his time including Mirko Cro Cop, Fedor Emelianenko, Quinton Jackson and Kazushi Sakuraba.
