49ers re-sign one RB, release another in practice squad shuffle

A familiar RB is back with the 49ers.

The San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday announced a couple of corresponding roster moves before they begin their on-field preparations for Week 11 against the Seattle Seahawks.

Running back Patrick Taylor Jr. re-signed with the 49ers on their practice squad. To make room on the 16-man practice roster, the team released Ke’Shawn Vaughn.

Taylor spent the first nine weeks of the season with the 49ers, but was released Friday before their Week 10 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to make room for Christian McCaffrey when he returned from IR.

It isn’t a huge surprise to see Taylor back in the team’s facility. He was with the club throughout training camp and the preseason and was fine when called upon. He primarily contributed on special teams, but he did see 21 snaps on offense and posted 25 rushing yards on seven carries.

Taylor will provide internal depth for the 49ers behind McCaffrey, Jordan Mason and Isaac Guerendo on the 53-man roster.

Vaughn also spent significant time with the 49ers in the preseason, but he never broke through to carve out any kind of role. He was released ahead of final cuts and re-signed to the practice squad. Vaughn didn’t appear in a regular-season game.

The 49ers will open their Week 11 practices Wednesday.

49ers add familiar face at RB, former 2nd-round WR to practice squad

The 49ers now have a full practice squad.

The San Francisco 49ers officially have a full practice squad.

On Thursday they announced the signing of running back Ke’Shawn Vaughn and wide receiver Terrace Marshall to their 16-man practice roster. They’re now at 17 players, including Isaac Alarcon who’s with the club via the NFL’s international player pathway program.

Vaughn was with the 49ers during the preseason. He played only seven snaps in one exhibition contest this year. In that game he racked up 12 rushing yards on two carries.

He gives San Francisco some internal running back depth after undrafted rookie Cody Schrader was claimed off waivers by the Los Angeles Rams. Vaughn was a third-round pick of the Buccaneers in the 2020 draft. In four years with Tampa Bay he had 384 yards and two touchdowns on 102 carries.

Marshall is an interesting player. He was taken by the Carolina Panthers in the second round of the 2021 draft. Despite measurables that project a ton of upside, he never put it together with the Panthers. In 36 games he had 64 catches for 767 yards and one touchdown across three seasons.

The 49ers may want to see if they can squeeze any untapped potential out of him. He joins Tay Martin and Trent Taylor as receivers on the practice squad. San Francisco may be aiming for internal depth with so much uncertainty around Brandon Aiyuk and Ricky Pearsall. If one or both aren’t available for the season opener it may force the 49ers to move their depth chart up where they would have a need for some special teams contributions at WR.

If San Francisco wants to make any more practice squad additions it will have to come with a corresponding move to drop a player since that portion of their roster is maxed out.

That could come into play soon. The Athletic’s Matt Barrows reported the 49ers are hoping to bring back defensive end Sam Okuayinonu who they waived Wednesday.

Patriots announce five roster moves on Monday

The Patriots released a veteran RB and announced four new rookie free agent signings

It was a busy Monday for the New England Patriots, following rookie minicamp.

The team announced the release of veteran running back Ke’Shawn Vaughn and the signings of four rookie free agents, including running back Terrell Jennings, guard Ryan Johnson, linebacker Jay Person and Australian defensive end Jotham Russell.

It’s worth noting the Patriots will receive an exemption for Russell, who is an International Pathway Program player. Russell is a former rugby player turned defensive end, while Johnson is a versatile offensive lineman with experience at both guard and tackle.

Meanwhile, the Person and Jennings signings aren’t surprising considering the Patriots could use some added depth in the pipeline at both linebacker and running back.

Vaughn, a former third-round pick for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, appeared on the Patriots’ practice squad, but not much else came from his addition to the roster last season.

Patriots reportedly land new QB and former third-round draft pick RB on Monday

The Patriots made a couple of roster moves on Monday.

The New England Patriots were busy on Monday making a couple of moves to shore up their roster.

KPRC 2’s Aaron Wilson reported the team claimed former Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Nathan Rourke on waivers. It was a much-needed depth signing after the Los Angeles Chargers signed Will Grier off the Patriots’ practice squad. The team also lost backup Malik Cunningham to the Baltimore Ravens last week.

So they clearly needed to make a move with Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe being the only quarterbacks left on the roster.

They also boosted the running back room by reportedly signing former Tampa Bay Buccaneer Ke’Shawn Vaughn to the practice squad. Vaughn was a member of the 2020 Buccaneers team that won a Super Bowl with Tom Brady under center.

The former third-round draft pick wasn’t utilized much in Tampa Bay, and he’s still working to find a more consistent role for an NFL team. Rhamondre Stevenson is currently out with an ankle injury, and the Patriots are leaning heavily on Ezekiel Elliott as their lead back.

Kevin Harris made a strong case to be the No. 2 option after scoring a touchdown against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. But there could be opportunities for Vaughn to get into the mix as well.

With three games left in the season, the Patriots are making the necessary moves that get them to the finish line.

Bucs waive RB Ke’Shawn Vaughn

Vaughn had been inactive on game day since Week 10.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are waiving a member of their running back corps.

The team announced on Friday that it is waiving running back Ke’Shawn Vaughn, who joined the team in 2020 and has played sparsely through his career in Tampa Bay. Vaughn initially got playing time to start the year, but he’s been inactive since Week 10.

Vaughn has had a rough 2023, amassing just 42 yards on 24 carries for an abysmal 1.8 yards per carry. Vaughn has been inactive for some time in favor of Bucs rookie Sean Tucker, who the team signed as an undrafted free agent. While no corresponding move was announced, it is likely that Vaughn’s release comes at the need for a defensive lineman on the practice squad to be activated to the active roster due to a continuing injury to DL Vita Vea — Deadrin Senat (who would be on his third elevation) or C.J. Brewer would both be candidates for such a thing.

Vaughn may be brought back to the practice squad, but as it stands, he’s had 103 carries for 384 yards (3.7 YPC) and two touchdowns.

Bucs inactives list for Week 10 at Titans

A starting corner for Tampa Bay is out and it looks as if the Bucs will use a different rotational running back against the Titans Sunday.

The Bucs will be without one of their starting cornerbacks on Sunday.

Cornerback Carlton Davis was officially ruled out with the inactives list on Sunday, suffering from a toe injury. He was listed as questionable to play, but he’s not gonna make it — as such, CB Zyon McCollum will take his place. Jamel Dean, who has been in concussion protocol all week, will play. CB Keenan Isaac was elevated from the practice squad to serve as depth today.

Guard Matt Feiler will also be out while still recovering from a knee injury. Interestingly enough, running back Ke’Shawn Vaughn is inactive, meaning that undrafted free agent Sean Tucker could get the nod as the team’s rotational back.

Here is Tampa Bay’s inactives list:

  • #11 QB John Wolford (3QB)
  • #21 RB Ke’Shawn Vaughn
  • #24 CB Carlton Davis III
  • #32 DB Josh Hayes
  • #71 G Matt Feiler
  • #89 TE David Wells

Studs and Duds from Tampa Bay’s 26-9 win over New Orleans

There were far more studs than duds in a dominant Tampa Bay win over their division rivals Sunday.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had a statement to make against the New Orleans Saints on the road Sunday, and boy, did they make it.

The Bucs won 26-9 in a big win over Saints in New Orleans, and it was showcased by domination on both sides of the ball. The Bucs put up three touchdowns and the defense was stifling against a Saints attack that couldn’t get anything going all day. Numerous players contributed in the victory and there wasn’t a lot to criticize, but a few things here and there could use some tune-ups heading into the bye week.

Here are Bucs Wire’s studs and duds for Week 4:

Ke’Shawn Vaughn goes 55 yards for Bucs touchdown

Ke’Shawn Vaughn with a long run to get the Bucs on the scoreboard in Week 16

Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will not be shut out in back-to-back weeks.

It took more than 10 minutes on Sunday but the GOAT and his team found the end zone after being blanked in Week 15 by the New Orleans Saints.

No need for Brady to pass the ball when Ke’Shawn Vaughn is able to go through the Carolina Panthers for a 55-yard touchdown run.

That’s an impressive way for Vaughn to step up with Leonard Fournette out against the Panthers.

Joining the three first-round picks are receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. went in the 2nd round to the Jacksonville Jaguars and running back Ke’Shawn Vaughn will get the chance to play with Tom Brady in Tampa Bay after being drafted in the 3rd round.
