Kenyon Martin Sr. had more nerves watching KJ Martin than as an NBA player

Kenyon Martin Sr. says that watching his son with the Houston Rockets is more nerve-wracking than anything from his playing career.

Kenyon Martin Sr. was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2000 NBA draft, and he played in an All-Star Game and the NBA Finals over a distinguished 15-year professional career. But he says he had more nerves watching his son, KJ Martin, with the Houston Rockets over this past season.

In an exclusive conversation with Rockets broadcaster Craig Ackerman, here’s what the elder Martin had to say about watching his son during the 2020-21 season — and how it compared to his nerves as a player.

Exciting, nerve-wracking at times. It was me wanting him to succeed so bad, and knowing the environment and everything that comes with it. The excitement (was) knowing that all the hard work that he’s put into it is just coming full circle for him now.

I’m definitely more nervous watching KJ play. For me, it was second nature going out there and doing it, just like it is for him. I was definitely more nervous watching him than any big-time games or free throws that I ever had to take.

Martin was selected in the second round of the 2020 NBA draft, with Houston securing his rights in a trade with the Sacramento Kings.

A 6-foot-6 forward, the younger Martin went on to average 9.3 points (50.9% FG, 36.5% on 3-pointers) and 5.4 rebounds in 23.7 minutes per game during his rookie season with the Rockets. Houston general manager Rafael Stone has already referred to the athletic 20-year-old as part of his team’s “young core” to build around in the years ahead.

The complete conversation between Ackerman and two generations of the Martin family can be watched below.

Rockets launch new promotion with KJ Martin, Kenyon Martin Sr.

The elder Martin never played for Houston during his 15 NBA seasons, but he’s forming a closer relationship now that his son plays there.

The Rockets are introducing a new ticketing and marketing promotion involving young forward KJ Martin (officially named Kenyon Martin Jr.) and former NBA player Kenyon Martin Sr., who happens to be his father. The younger Martin just finished up his rookie season in Houston.

As part of a Father’s Day four-pack promotion, fans can acquire tickets to four games at Toyota Center and participate in a Zoom call with both father and son for as low as $99, depending on desired seat locations. The tickets are for contests in the upcoming 2021-22 regular season.

The most noteworthy part of the promotion is the inclusion of Martin Sr., the No. 1 overall pick from the NBA’s 2000 draft and an All-Star in 2004. Over 15 NBA seasons, he averaged 12.3 points (48.3% FG), 6.8 rebounds, and 1.9 assists in 30.6 minutes per game. He played for five franchises — never the Rockets — but he seems to be interested in having some sort of post-playing career role in Houston, now that his son plays there.

Now 43 years old, it remains to be seen if Martin Sr. will have any sort of “official” involvement with the Rockets beyond the new Father’s Day promotion. But for a franchise seeking to rebuild after finishing the 2020-21 season with the league’s worst record, having a former NBA All-Star as a vocal supporter and promoter certainly can’t hurt.

Kenyon Martin says his son has made a choice on his basketball future

Kenyon Martin Jr. initially committed to play 2019-20 at Vanderbilt but instead chose to do a post-graduate year at the IMG Academy.

Kenyon Martin Sr. told Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN that his son, Kenyon Martin Jr. of the IMG Academy, has declared for the upcoming 2020 NBA Draft.

The three-star prospect originally committed to play the 2019-20 season at Vanderbilt over the likes of UCLA, TCU and West Virginia but instead chose to do a post-graduate year at the IMG Academy after graduating from Sierra Canyon in California.

Martin Sr. told Alex Kennedy of HoopsHype back in August that his son was considering playing professionally either overseas or in the G League but they ultimately decided to go with the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.

With Martin Jr. officially declared for the draft, it is unclear if he will hear his name called after last playing in high school. While his draft range is still up in the air, he will have the benefit of training and taking advice from his father, who played 15 seasons in the NBA and was the No. 1 overall pick in 2001.
