Kentucky basketball offers 2026 five-star guard Jordan Smith Jr.

Kentucky and coach Mark Pope are recruiting this highly touted 2026 shooting guard from Virginia.

Coach Mark Pope and the Kentucky Wildcats basketball staff have offered Jordan Smith, the No. 7 overall player and No. 3 shooting guard in the 2026 recruiting class, according to both On3 Industry Rankings and 247Sports’ composite rankings.

“Blessed to receive an offer from the University of Kentucky,” the five-star recruit shared in a social media post to Instagram earlier this week.

In early July, Smith helped guide the USA Basketball U17 national team to the gold medal at the 2024 FIBA World Cup in Istanbul, Turkey.

Listed at 6-foot-3, 195 pounds out of Paul VI Catholic High School in Fairfax, Va., Smith has also received offers from Arkansas, Syracuse, Duke, North Carolina, two-time defending national champion UConn, Kansas, Alabama, Tennessee, Houston and others.

TV announcers for Kentucky Wildcats vs Ohio Bobcats

Here’s who will be on the call for SEC Network Saturday when the Kentucky Wildcats host the Ohio Bobcats at Kroger Field in Lexington.

ESPN announced its Week 4 college football broadcast assignments and commentator crews on Monday, which includes who will be on the call when the Kentucky Wildcats host the Ohio Bobcats at Kroger Field in Lexington Saturday.

The broadcast team of Dave Neal (play-by-play), Aaron Murray (analyst) and Ashley ShahAhmadi (sideline) will have the call of Kentucky vs. Ohio, set for a 12:45 p.m. ET kickoff on SEC Network.

It’s the first time this season that Neal, a veteran voice of SEC football dating back to his days on the regional Raycom Sports-produced telecasts of conference games, will call a Wildcats game this season.

Kentucky (1-2) is hoping to stop the bleeding after back-to-back losses to South Carolina and No. 1 Georgia in conference play. The Wildcats led for much of the night last Saturday in Lexington before a fourth-quarter Georgia touchdown run from Branson Robinson gave the Bulldogs a 13-12 lead they would not relinquish.

Ohio (2-1) is coming off back-to-back wins, including a 21-6 victory over FCS foe Morgan State last Saturday in Athens. A week earlier, the Bobcats defeated South Alabama, 27-20, also in Athens.

Kentucky leads the all-time head-to-head series against Ohio, 4-2. The two schools last met on Sept. 6, 2014, a 20-3 Wildcats win.

AROUND THE “TUBE”

ESPN’s ‘College GameDay’ and No. 1 broadcast crew of Chris Fowler (play-by-play), Kirk Herbstreit (analyst) and Holly Rowe (sideline reporter) will be in Norman, Okla., this weekend for a top 15 showdown between No. 7 Tennessee and No. 13 Oklahoma at 7:30 ET. The game can be seen on ABC. It’s the Sooners’ first conference game since officially joining the SEC over the summer.

Other SEC games of note are UCLA vs. No. 16 LSU in Baton Rouge. The Bruins-Tigers matchup is ABC’s weekly 3:30 ET game.

Opposite Ohio-Kentucky in the early window is NC State vs. No. 19 Clemson at Clemson Memorial Stadium (noon ET, ABC) and Florida vs. Mississippi State (noon ET, ESPN) at Davis Wade Stadium.

Kentucky coach Mark Stoops doubles down on fourth-quarter punt against Georgia

Here’s what Kentucky coach Mark Stoops said when given a chance to re-examine his late-game decision to punt the ball back to Georgia with just 3:03 to play instead of going for it on fourth down at the Bulldogs’ 47.

Kentucky Wildcats coach Mark Stoops isn’t backing down from his widely panned decision to punt the ball with just three minutes remaining against the top-ranked Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday.

At his weekly press conference Monday, Stoops was offered a chance to open up about the decision, which saw Kentucky pass up a chance to go for a first down on a 4th-and-7 play from the Georgia 47.

Instead, the Bulldogs took over at their own 15-yard line following the punt and moved the ball 50 yards while draining the clock down to just 9 seconds after punting into the end-zone for a touchback. That left Kentucky with time for just two more plays, including an ill-fated attempt at a lateral on the game’s final snap.

“I don’t take offense to the criticism of not going for it or whatever,” Stoops said Monday. “Again, I told the coaches on the headset on first down, I had every intention of going for it. Wish we would have gained some yards and had a manageable third down, manageable fourth down. But you’ve got to realize in that same zone on the plus-48, I want to say we had two sack fumbles, one sack, and then the next one went back from the plus (territory).

“Think about if we get three there. Think about if Coach Stoops goes conservative and we just run it three plays in a row and kick the field goal there, right? Again, if you’re gonna report this, report the whole damn thing.”

RELATED: Social media reacts to Mark Stoops ‘cowardly’ decision to punt with game on the line vs Georgia

“If we would have went, how many people are saying, ‘Hey, Coach Stoops, you’re dumb? We had the ball on the plus 47. Why didn’t you just pound it three more times?'” Stoops continued. “We’re moving the ball really good against a good defense. What if we got those three instead of getting sacked, instead of gotten sack fumbled and went all the way back to the 22 on the other side? Think about that swing. Nobody talks about that, do they?

“So, when I had the ball three times around the same zone and went negative, negative and on second down damn near had a fumble. Third down, damn near had a fumble. We got to that point by playing field position and playing defense. We had a chance to win that game just the way we played it. We came up a play or two short. I stand by that.”

Kentucky ran the ball for 170 yards on 45 attempts in Saturday’s 13-12 loss, with running back Demie Sumo-Karngbaye gaining 98 yards on 22 carries.

Stoops was asked a follow-up on whether he had any regrets about not running the ball more often on the Wildcats’ second to last drive. On that possession, Kentucky ran the ball four times with their base running backs — in addition to a 10-yard run from quarterback Brock Vandagriff — but they attempted to pass on second and third down after reaching the Bulldogs’ 47.

“I do (have regrets),” Stoops said. “And again, I don’t put handcuffs on the play-caller (Bush Hamdan). I want them to feel good and feel comfortable. I’ll say this: before the one that went back to the 22, I said on the headset beforehand, ‘Hey, this is going to be one of those games.’ These are tough yards. Don’t take negative-yardage plays and turnovers. And it’s not his fault. It’s not his fault, but that’s who you’re playing. That’s where you’re getting into the danger zone.

“And so the recipe was right, especially the way we ran it. And again, we took our shots. It’s a lot like NFL football. You watch NFL football and they make hay on first and second down. You give those beasts time to bear down on a predictable pass and nobody is comfortable, especially in the situation we’re in now.”

Kentucky will host the Ohio Bobcats in nonconference play Saturday at Kroger Field. Kickoff is set for 12:45 p.m. ET. The game will be televised on SEC Network.

Georgia survives upset bid by Kentucky

Georgia survives Kentucky by a single point

Georgia came into Kentucky as the No. 1 team in the country. The Dawgs left Lexington with the number “1” branded in their minds.

That’s because the Wildcats came within a point of upsetting Georgia on Saturday before falling 13-12.

The SEC was supposed to be tough in 2024. It wasn’t expected that facing  Kentucky, which had lost to South Carolina the previous week, was going to test these Dawgs.

Branson Robinson scored on a short touchdown run with 12:20 left in the fourth quarter to give Georgia its first lead, 13-9.

Alex Raynor kicked a 51-yard field goal with 8:01 left to bring Kentucky within a point.

“Our defense played lights out tonight,” Kirby Smart said. “We’re resilient. Two years ago we go to Missouri and almost lost that game. Last year we went to Auburn and almost lost that game.

“We’ve got to get better. Kentucky came after us and was really aggressive.”

Georgia’s defense stiffened and the Wildcats were unable to finish an upset. Kentucky came into the game as a 21.5-point underdogs.

If it weren’t for Georgia having a bye next week, one could say the Dawgs got caught looking ahead. Their next game on Sept. 28 is an SEC heavyweight bout at fourth-ranked Alabama.

One huge concern for Kirby Smart has to be the rush defense. Georgia allowed Kentucky 170 rushing yards. If you factor in sack yardage that comes off rushing totals in college, the Wildcats had around 200 yards on the ground.

Kentucky also had a pick-six taken off the scoreboard when a play was ruled an incomplete pass on a review rather than an interception and touchdown that would have made it 10-0.

Georgia has 28 conference wins in a row and 16 straight road games. Both those streaks will be tested in Tuscaloosa.

“The theme of the week was blow by blow,” quarterback Carson Beck said. “I’m really proud of our defense. The first road game is always a hard test.”

Kentucky football uniform combination for Week 3 vs Georgia Bulldogs

Here’s what the Kentucky Wildcats will be wearing when they take the field against the Georgia Bulldogs Saturday night in Lexington.

The Kentucky Wildcats will be wearing a different uniform combination when they take the field against the top-ranked Georgia Bulldogs Saturday night in Lexington.

The Wildcats will be wearing their alternate gray jerseys with matching pants against the Bulldogs at Kroger Field, the team announced on their official social media platforms. Kentucky will wear blue helmets to accompany the all-gray look.

That marks three different uniform combinations in the first three games for Mark Stoops’ team, which donned its all-blue look in last week’s SEC opener against South Carolina.

Kentucky last wore its gray jersey and pant combo in last year’s 49-21 loss to Alabama in Lexington on Nov. 11.

SEC baseball releases 2025 schedules: Here’s who Kentucky will play

The SEC released the 2025 conference schedules for all 16 baseball teams Thursday afternoon. Here’s who Kentucky will face in conference play in 2025.

The Southeastern Conference announced the 2025 league baseball schedules for all 16 members on Thursday. The Kentucky Wildcats will play five conference series at home and five on the road.

Here’s who the Bat Cats will play.

Kentucky will open conference play on the road against Georgia in Athens, March 14-16, and will also visit Texas A&M, Tennessee, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt in league action. The Volunteers won the 2024 College World Series over the runner-up Aggies. Kentucky will be in Knoxville for Easter Weekend, April 18-20.

Auburn, Ole Miss and South Carolina are three of the more familiar SEC rivals who will visit Kentucky Proud Park in 2025, as will conference newcomers Texas and Oklahoma. Auburn will head to Lexington on March 21-23 for Kentucky’s SEC home opener.

Texas is scheduled to visit Lexington, April 11-13, while Kentucky will host Oklahoma in the second to last regular-season series, May 9-11. The Bat Cats will close the regular season in Nashville against Vanderbilt, May 15-17 before the SEC Tournament in Hoover (Ala.).

Kentucky is coming off its best season in program history. The Bat Cats won a school-record 46 games to finish 46-16 overall and were ranked No. 3 in the final USA TODAY Sports baseball coaches poll behind Tennessee and Texas A&M. Kentucky reached the College World Series for the first time in school history.

After the season, Kentucky had seven players selected in the 2024 Major League Baseball Draft: outfielder Ryan Waldschmidt (No. 31 overall by the Arizona Diamondbacks), second baseman Emilien Pitre (second-round, Tampa Bay Rays), pitcher Trey Pooser (fifth-round, Tampa Bay), first baseman Ryan Nicholson (10th round, Los Angeles Angels), and pitchers Mason Moore (15th round, Chicago White Sox), Travis Smith (15th round, Milwaukee Brewers) and Dominic Niman (18th round, Tampa Bay).

The 2025 season will be the ninth for Kentucky under coach Nick Mingione, who recently agreed to a longterm contract extension with the school just last week.

Stat breakdown of Georgia football’s SEC opener at Kentucky

Looking at statistical similarities and differences between the Georgia Bulldogs and Kentucky Wildcats entering their Week 3 game

The No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs (2-0), coming off of a 48-3 win over the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles, will head to Kroger Field to play the Kentucky Wildcats (1-1), their first SEC opponent. Kentucky is coming off the heels of a 31-6 loss to South Carolina, which saw Georgia transfer Brock Vandagriff get benched for Gavin Wimsatt.

Georgia has lived up to the preseason No. 1 hype so far, with dominating wins against No. 14 Clemson and Tennessee Tech. They’ll be looking to keep their undefeated regular season record alive.

Meanwhile, Kentucky has disappointed. What was supposed to be a solid, mid-tier SEC team has been a dud on both sides of the ball. While it is just Week 3 of the college season, losing in a blowout to South Carolina doesn’t inspire confidence.

Here’s a statistical look at each team, provided by CFB Stats.

Scoring Offense:

Georgia: 41 points per game (tied-31st)

Kentucky: 18.5 points per game (tied-110th)

Rushing Offense:

Georgia: 167.5 rushing yards per game (59th)

Kentucky: 143.5 rushing yards per game (82nd)

Passing Offense:

Georgia: 305 passing yards per game (24th)

Kentucky: 106.5 passing yards per game (130th)

Total Offense:

Georgia: 472.5 total yards per game (33rd)

Kentucky: 250 total yards per game (125th)

Scoring Defense:

Georgia: 3.0 points allowed per game (tied-4th)

Kentucky: 15.5 points allowed per game (t-49th)

Run Defense:

Georgia: 81 yards allowed per game (29th)

Kentucky: 45.5 yards allowed per game (8th)

Pass Defense:

Georgia: 80 yards allowed per game (5th)

Kentucky: 146 yards allowed per game (39th)

Total Defense:

Georgia: 161 total yards allowed per game (5th)

Kentucky: 191.5 total yards allowed per game (8th)

Kentucky still has one of the top defenses in the country. The Wildcats will need to stop the run against Georgia to have a chance. Georgia’s offense has looked much better than Kentucky’s to start the season. One thing to note is that Kentucky’s 31-0 win over Southern Mississippi in Week 1 was cut short due to a lightning delay.

“They’re physical. So you play defense, you have physical lines of scrimmage, you have huge people on the offensive and defensive line, and you’re hard to move the ball on,” said Georgia coach Kirby Smart on facing Kentucky. Battles with the Wildcats usually come down to winning the line of scrimmage.

TV, announcers set for Georgia-Kentucky game

Georgia football plays at Kentucky at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, Sept. 14 as the Bulldogs look to move to 3-0

The Georgia Bulldogs and Kentucky Wildcats face off in Week 3 of the 2024 college football season. Georgia-Kentucky game, which will be UGA’s first road game and SEC game of the season, is scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, Sept. 14.

Georgia is 2-0. The Bulldogs are expected to face former Georgia quarterback Brock Vandagriff, who has started the Wildcats’ first two games of the season. Kentucky is 1-1 and is coming off an embarrassing 31-6 home loss to the South Carolina Gamecocks.

The Georgia-Kentucky game will be televised on ABC. The commentators for the contest are Sean McDonough (play-by-play), former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy (analyst) and Molly McGrath (sideline).

“We’ve got to prepare for a tough, really physical game, which is that way every time we play Kentucky,” said Georgia head coach Kirby Smart. Georgia blew Kentucky out of the water at home a season ago in the Dawgs’ 51-13 win over the Wildcats.

[lawrence-auto-related count=2]

Kentucky has plenty of reasons to be motivated against No. 1 Georgia. The Wildcats are coming off a blowout loss last week and were crushed against Georgia a season ago. Georgia enters the game as heavy favorites, but aside from 2023, Kentucky has player Georgia very well in recent seasons.

Kentucky basketball gets huge commitment, lands elite five-star guard Jasper Johnson

5-star guard Jasper Johnson officially commits to Kentucky Basketball!

Five-star guard Jasper Johnson officially announced his intention to play for Mark Pope and the Kentucky Wildcats Thursday.

Johnson made the announcement in a live stream carried by 247Sports and CBS Sports. The 6-foot-5 shooting guard from Atlanta’s Overtime Elite chose Kentucky over offers from Alabama and North Carolina. He is ranked the No. 12 player in the class of 2025 by both On3 and 247Sports.

“Coach Pope, I feel like he made a big commitment, took a lot of time and spoke a lot with me, so I feel like the trust was there between me and him and the coaching staff,” Johnson said at the live event where he announced his commitment. “Being from Lexington, Kentucky, I feel like that was an easy decision. I feel like I’m K.Y. till I die.”

With his commitment, Johnson becomes the second player in the 2025 recruiting class to commit to the Wildcats. Malachi Moreno, a four-star center from Great Crossing High School in Georgetown (Ky.), committed to Kentucky back on Aug. 16.

Johnson is the son of former Kentucky football player Dennis Johnson, a defensive end who played for the Wildcats from 1998-2001 and was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2002 NFL Draft.

TV broadcast crew announced for Kentucky vs. South Carolina

Sean McDonough (play by play) and Greg McElroy (analyst) will have the call for Kentucky vs. South Carolina in Lexington at 3:30 p.m. ET Saturday on ABC.

It isn’t often that ESPN/ABC’s No. 2 college football broadcast team visits Lexington. Nevertheless, that crew will be at Kroger Field Saturday for Kentucky’s SEC opener against South Carolina.

ESPN has made its Week 2 college football commentator pairings official. For Kentucky-South Carolina, ESPN/ABC’s broadcast crew of Sean McDonough (play-by-play), Greg McElroy (analyst) and Molly McGrath (sideline reporter) will be on the call.

Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC. It’s the Wildcats’ first appearance in the new “SEC on ABC” time slot. The SEC’s marquee 3:30 game is in its first year on ABC after 28 seasons with CBS.

Unlike with CBS, ESPN will use a trio of its top three commentator pairings for its weekly 3:30 p.m. SEC on ABC game. McDonough/McElroy is one of them. Chris Fowler/Kirk Herbstreit/Holly Rowe is another, as is Joe Tessitore/Jesse Palmer/Katie George.

Kentucky and South Carolina are both unranked following Week 1 victories. The Wildcats, who posted a 31-0 shutout win over Southern Miss last Saturday, received the fourth most votes for Top 25 consideration of teams that landed outside the Week 2 US LBM Coaches Poll with 23 votes.

AROUND THE TUBE

ESPN’s No. 1 broadcast team will be in Charlotte when No. 23 NC State meets No. 12 Tennessee in the Duke’s Mayo Classic at Bank of America Stadium (7:30 p.m. ET, ABC). Rece Davis will fill in for Chris Fowler, who’s away on ESPN’s coverage of the US Open, and team with Herbstreit and Rowe for NC State-Tennessee.

Other SEC games of note on ESPN/ABC Saturday at Arkansas vs. Oklahoma State (noon ET, ABC) and South Florida vs. Alabama (7 p.m. ET, ESPN).

Cal-Auburn (3:30 ET, ESPN2) will be shown in the same time slot as South Carolina-Kentucky.
