The best photos from Kentucky’s valiant effort versus Tennessee

Here are some of the best images from Kentucky’s solid effort against Tennessee.

Kentucky football needed a big win on Saturday against the Tennessee Volunteers. With a 3 – 5 record heading into the game, the Wildcats need wins. Unfortunately, despite a solid effort, the Vols came away with a 28 – 18 victory.

With injuries on both sides of the ball, Kentucky needed their best football, and they nearly got it. They jumped out to a 7 – 0 lead and led 10 – 7 at halftime. In the second half, though, things got away from them.

Brock Vandagriff played pretty well, but was knocked out of the game, leaving Gavin Wimsatt to play quarterback. He did throw a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter, but also threw a big interception that was nearly returned for a score.

Overall, it was a fourth straight loss, which is all that really counts, but they hung with Tennesee for four quarters, which was impressive considering everything working against them.

In an exciting game, there were a number of excellent pictures, and here are the best ones from Kentucky’s loss to Tennessee.

Kentucky keeps it close, but comes up short against Tennesee

Kentucky football makes it a good game, but falls to Tennessee 28 – 18 on Saturday night

Most people predicted Kentucky football would be handled pretty easily by the Tennessee Volunteers. The Wildcats had lost three straight, while Tennessee is having a huge year. Injuries also meant Kentucky would short-handed.

However, the Cats gave a very good effort, especially on the defensive side of the ball. A defense missing a number of starters kept Kentucky in the game, and the offense kept things interesting for a while. Ultimately, however, Tennessee was too much, and they’d win it 28 – 18.

Kentucky’s offense managed to put up 360 yards, but still couldn’t break the 20 point mark. They haven’t scored over 20 versus an SEC team this season. Three turnovers helped to limit their points.

The Wildcats now fall to 3 – 6 on the season, and their bowl homes are on life support. The injuries also continue to mount, with quarterback Brock Vandagriff leaving the game early.

Jamarion Wilcox ran for 102 yards, and was the offensive star for Kentucky. Jamon Dumas-Johnson totaled 14 tackles, including a sack. Up next is a bye week for Kentucky before they play Murray State on November 16th.

Staff predictions for Kentucky vs Tennessee on Saturday

Here is the UKWildcatsWire staff prediction for Kentucky versus Tennessee on Saturday.

The last time Kentucky football met a top ten team, they pulled off a huge upset, taking down Ole Miss. They would love to repeat that feat this Saturday when the take on the Tennessee Volunteers.

The Wildcats have lost three straight games, while Tennessee has mostly played like a national championship contender this season. Kentucky has no momentum right now, and history is on the Vols’ side as well.

For Kentucky to win, they’ll need to overcome a lot. There have been a lot of issues on offense all season, but the defense hasn’t played well either in the past few games.

Do the Wildcats have a chance in this game? Here is the staff prediction for Saturday’s Kentucky versus Tennessee matchup.

Vance Meek – Lead Writer

Kentucky needs a miracle to win this game. They haven’t scored more than 20 points versus an SEC opponent this year, and the Volunteers are almost certain to score more than that.

The Wildcats offense has to figure out how to get points on the board. Offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan has to maximize the offense, and quarterback Brock Vandagriff will need to play his best. It’s hard to envision them pulling it together based on what they’ve done this year.

Tennessee 41 – Kentucky 17

History favors Tennessee in head-to-head matchups with Kentucky

Kentucky football will have to overcome a lot of history to beat Tennessee on Saturday.

Kentucky football enters week ten of the college football season looking to avoid a fourth straight loss. The Wildcats have struggled mightily in SEC play, going 1 – 5 in versus conference opponents, and the Tennessee Volunteers are up next.

The Volunteers, however, are having a tremendous season. They’re 6 – 1 overall and 3 – 1 in the SEC, and currently ranked seventh in the US LBM Coaches Poll. It will be a tall order for Kentucky, and history doesn’t favor them.

Related: Who is at fault for the 2024 Kentucky season

The Wildcats and Volunteers have met 119 times, and Tennessee has won 84 of them compared to Kentucky’s 26. Recent history has been drastically in favor of the Vols as well.

Since winning 8-of-12 games from 1953 to 1964, it’s been virtually all Tennessee. Kentucky has only won seven times in the 59 years since. At one point, Tennessee won 26 in a row.

Kentucky last won in 2020, in blowout fashion. Last year, the Cats lost a close one, 33 – 27.

History, both recent and not-so-recent, seems to indicate a Tennessee win on Saturday. The Wildcats will try to beat a whole lot of history on Saturday.

Expert Picks: Does Auburn even their record on Saturday?

With Week 9 in the SEC set to kick off on Saturday, the Auburn Wire staff make their predictions for the Tigers matchup and the SEC slate.

After an open week for both teams, the Auburn Tigers and Arkansas Razorbacks get back to action in the SEC.

Prior to the bye, the Hogs took care of the BYU Cougars in Provo while the Tigers dropped another game where the opponents scored more than 40 points. The third this season, which ties a school record. They will look to avoid a third-straight game of opponents hitting the 40-mark after Georgia dropped 42 and Ole Miss added another 48.

The Auburn Wire staff make their picks for the X-Factors in the game against Arkansas as well as their game picks for the rest of the SEC slate of games. Will the Tigers lose their fourth straight game or will Bryan Harsin get his team back to .500 on Saturday?

Week 9 SEC editors selections: Can Texas A&M upset Ole Miss?

Week 9 predictions from the SEC Wire editorial team.

Week 9 in the SEC will feature the return of the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party in Jacksonville, Florida when the Bulldogs and Gators meet. There will only be one meeting of top 25 teams when No. 3 Tennessee hosts No. 17 Kentucky in Knoxville.

After losing to South Carolina in Columbia, the Texas A&M Aggies set their sights on evening their record at .500. Jimbo Fisher and company will host No. 12 Ole Miss. This game features Lane Kiffin facing off with his former defensive coordinator DJ Durkin, who left Oxford for College Station after Mike Elko took the Duke head coaching job.

“We got outbid,” Kiffin said about Durkin leaving for Texas A&M. “Kind of common theme with that program.” Looks like there will be no shortage of fireworks in this matchup. Ole Miss is coming off the loss to LSU where they were outscored 42-3 from the second quarter until the final gun went off.

Alabama, LSU, Mississippi State, and Vanderbilt are on their open week. As we do each week, the SEC editors on the College Wire network make their predictions for each conference game on the schedule.

Kentucky vs Tennessee Game Preview

Why Kentucky Will Win

The Wildcats might have the right mix and blend to slow the machine down.

Kentucky normally isn’t great in the time of possession battle, but it’s holding the ball for close to 35 minutes per game this year, it’s decent at moving the chains, and the defense is keeping high-powered passing games from going off.

There isn’t any pass rush, but the D kept Mississippi State to just over 200 passing yards, Ole Miss is the only other attack to throw for two bills, and now it gets a Tennessee team that works fast, scores fast, is fast, but might get bogged down a bit.

And then there’s the UK passing attack. Will Levis should do whatever he wants against a Tennessee secondary that’s getting chewed up by everyone – UT Martin hit the nation’s second-worst pass defense for 316 yards last week.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why Tennessee Will Win

Yeah, so Tennessee allows 330 passing yards per game. That’s the cost of doing business for a team with Hendon Hooker and the nation’s most dangerous offense.

It’s not just Hooker, WR Jalin Hyatt, and the high-powered passing game that’s second in the country in efficiency behind Ohio State. The running game is working just fine, too, to balance it out and keep the UK defense on its heels a bit.

Yeah, Kentucky will grind this down, and it’ll seem like the offense is on the field for 40 minutes – that’s because it will be – but Hooker can hit in a flash, the Vol defense should be able to take the ball away twice, and it can crank up the big plays the other side can’t.

For all of Tennessee’s problems on D, it’s solid in the red zone and it’s not bad on third downs. Kentucky can’t come up with empty trips at the end of its grinding drives.

What’s Going To Happen

Kentucky is a problem.

Everyone will be focusing on what’s next with Tennessee’s massive date against Georgia, but UK will bring something a little different with its style. It’ll be enough to hang around and make everyone freak out a bit, but …

The lack of a Wildcat pass rush will be an issue.

Hooker is deadly enough when he’s in a groove, but give him time to let the downfield plays to develop and forget it.

It’s going to be a 60-minute fight, but the Vols will get out alive with two good fourth quarter scoring drives.

And then it’ll be on to Athens.

Kentucky vs Tennessee Game Preview

Why Kentucky Will Win

If we’re really doing this ranking thing based on the right now, no one’s playing better than Kentucky.

On a six-game winning streak, the Wildcats are dominating inside, they’re hitting their threes, and they’ve been just good enough from the free throw line.

There might be a few too many turnovers, but the defense is making up for it – especially against the three – and it’s all being cleaned up on the boards.

UK leads the nation in rebounding margin – it came up with a ridiculous 17 offensive rebounds in the win over Florida – and Tennessee is just okay on the boards.

The Vol D didn’t have a prayer in the 107-79 loss to the Wildcats back in mid-January, and it even won the rebounding margin by 1.

However …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Tennessee Will Win

Tennessee bounced back from the loss to Texas to crank out four straight solid, dog-day wins that got it right back on track.

It didn’t shoot well against Vanderbilt and won by owning the boards. It shot great against South Carolina and Mississippi State on the road with the threes falling, and it continues to do a great job on the other end of forcing turnovers and mistakes.

Kentucky doesn’t give the ball away a ton, but it’ll be good for at least ten turnovers in this. The Vols know how to turn those into points. But …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Here’s the problem for Tennessee. It’s giving up a TON of free throws lately.

The defense is aggressive, and fouls haven’t been that much of an issue overall, but even with all the wins it’s in a bad run of getting hit with a whole lot of free throws – 14 or more in each of the last four games.

Kentucky isn’t all that great on the line, but it’s got a way of getting there if you can’t handle things on the inside. No, it’s not going to make 20-of-21 like it did in the first meeting, but …

Tennessee is 5-6 on the road and 13-0 at home. The crowd will be electric, the inside play will be strong, and Kentucky playing its third road game in four dates and its sixth in nine since the win over Tennessee will play a role.

Why Kentucky Will Win

The Wildcats have won two straight, and while it’s too little too late, it’s at least a run.

The offense has finally started to crank it up a bit more nailing plenty of threes against Auburn and being brilliant on the free throw line against Vanderbilt.

All of a sudden, this looks like a team that can keep up with a team like Tennessee.

The Vols need to get on the move – they don’t do enough from the outside – and they have to force mistakes and generate pressure to get the O working. However …

Why Tennessee Will Win

Kentucky continues to be awful when it comes to turnover margin.

It blocks a ton of shots, but it doesn’t force steals and mistakes and it normally doesn’t shoot well from the field and isn’t likely to stay relatively hot on the road against the Vols.

Tennessee is not only scoring a ton lately – hanging up 80 or more in three of the last four games and four of the last six – but it still has the best scoring D in the SEC. Teams just don’t shoot well against this team’s pressure, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Tennessee should be able to do exactly what it did in the 82-71 win in Lexington a few weeks ago.

It doesn’t have to be red hot, but as long as it continues to be brilliant at coming up with assists to keep everything moving, and as long as the defense holds yet another team to under 30% from three, it should be able to roll to fourth win in the last five games.

Kentucky (17-5) vs. Tennessee (13-9) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Kentucky Will Win

Tennessee has been wildly inconsistent, losing three of its last four games with a hit-or-miss offense that hasn’t hit 75 points in any of the last 11 games.

Kentucky might have its problems, but the scoring has been consistent, the offense is scoring in bunches, and the defense has been suffocating against just about anyone who needs to hit from three.

Tennessee might swing the ball around just fine and is great at coming up with the extra pass, but it’s not going to get on the boards in key moments like the Cats will. If the Vols aren’t hitting, they’re going to have a hard time keeping up – hit 75 points or forget it.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Tennessee Will Win

Tennessee really does move the ball around well. No team in the SEC is better at coming up with the extra pass, and it’s not bad when it comes to the mistakes – the turnovers aren’t there.

No, the offense might not have the consistent firepower to get into a shootout, but the defense usually makes up for the problems, especially against teams that have to hit from three. UK doesn’t do much from the outside, and the Vol D has the ability to collapse, block shots, and bring things down to its tempo.

What’s Going To Happen

Tennessee really, really needs this.

On the road for five of its last seven games, it’s finally back at home a Saturday for the first time since mid-Saturday. This might be way too inconsistent of a team, but it has just enough to make this a fight.

However, it doesn’t have the offense. Kentucky won’t go off – it doesn’t do anything from three – but it’ll be able to pull away late after nailing free throw after free throw.
