It was another good year for Kentucky basketball fans in terms of their annual rivalry game with the Louisville Cardinals. It was a close game throughout, but the Wildcats held them off for a 93 – 85 victory.

The matchup was an intense one, as always. It not only had the feel of a big game, including a rapt audience that was into every second of it, but it had also had the requisite trash talk, physicality of play, and a near-brawl.

Lamont Butler led the way for Kentucky with 33 points. He was 6-of-6 from three-point range, and each one seemed to come at an important moment. Andrew Carr also made a number of timely plays, especially on the defensive end.

In the end, it was another win for Kentucky in the series. It was the third straight in the series for the Wildcats, and the sixth of the last seven.

With such an emotional game, the pictures from the game are sure to be good. Here are the best images from the Kentucky win.

Kentucky defeats Louisville behind a career night from Lamont Butler

Kentucky got a huge game from Lamont Butler in a win over Louisville.

The rivalry between Kentucky basketball and Louisville is one of the country’s more intense ones. Kentucky has beaten the Duke Blue Devils and Gonzaga Bulldogs, but beating the Cardinals is an absolute must every year.

On Saturday, the two teams battled in an entertaining game that resulted in a win for the Wildcats by a score of 93 – 85. It was a close game throughout, and Kentucky didn’t get the win easily, but they are now 10 – 1 on the season.

The Cats jumped out early, but Louisville began to hit make some three pointers in timely moments. Kentucky led by six at halftime.

The second half was more of the same. The Wildcats would make runs, but Louisville would stay in striking distance. In the end, Kentucky made just enough plays on defense to hold on.

Lamont Butler had a career night for Kentucky. He was a perfect 10-of-10 from the field, including 6-of-6 from deep and scored 33 points. He added six assists.

Otega Oweh had 17 points, including some big baskets down the stretch. Andrew Carr also made some huge plays, with some big rebounds and two blocked shots.

Kentucky will play Ohio State next Saturday at Rupp Arena.

Kentucky basketball is preparing for the looming scheduling gauntlet

Kentucky basketball will face a difficult schedule of the next few weeks.

Just over a month out of SEC play, and Kentucky basketball is preparing for one of its toughest stretches of the season.

Wildcat basketball kicks off a two-week gauntlet this Tuesday with a matchup against Clemson.

The Tigers are 7-1 to start the season, with their only loss coming against Boise State on November 17. They’re a tough out by every stretch, as ESPN expert Joe Lunardi currently has Clemson as a ten seed in his latest Bracketology.

Their next matchup is arguably their toughest of the regular season, as Kentucky is slated to play Gonzaga on Saturday, December 7. The Bulldogs (7-1) are the fourth-ranked team in the country and a one seed in Lunardi’s latest.

These matchups are two that the team is preparing for — particularly with physicality.

“You know, next week is our first true road game. Really, it’s going to be essentially our first true road games against elite level talent,” said Wildcats coach Mark Pope. “Both insanely physical teams. Clemson incredibly physical.  Gonzaga, I know Gonzaga well. We been messing with them for a long time and coach Hughes is probably the best in college basketball or close to it, I don’t know how to rate them. Gonzaga is always insanely physical and part of their team that people miss sometimes.  It’s something, we are going into a combat week where it’s going to be a massively physical game.”

The Wildcats then have somewhat of a lull, taking on 2-5 Colgate the following Wednesday, December 11.

Then it’s straight back into action, as Kentucky is set to host blood-rival Louisville (5-2) at Rupp Arena on Saturday, December 14.

Kentucky ends the 2024 season with a whimper versus Louisville

Kentucky falls to Louisville in a blowout loss to end the 2024 season.

The 2024 Kentucky football season was one that won’t be forgotten, but for all the wrong reasons. Once promising after a win over Ole Miss, the wheels came off, and they finished with a disappointing 4 – 8 record after falling to the Louisville Cardinals in the final game 41 -14.

Anything can, and often does, happen in rivalry games. Kentucky had won five in a row for the Governor’s Cup, and was hoping to end the season on a positive note.

The Wildcats offense was anemic once again, a theme this season. They managed 300 yards of total offense, but turned the ball over five times. On defense, they were once again unable to slow down the run. Louisville had two running backs go for more than 100 yards. Each had two touchdowns.

This offseason will be an important one for Kentucky’s football program. Fans have begun to call for Mark Stoops’ job after their worst finish since 2013. If he returns, he will need to find a way to improve the run defense and the offensive line play.

This final game was, like the season, a disappointment. It showed every flaw that the Wildcats had shown all season, and unfortunately, there were just too many to overcome.

Staff predictions for Kentucky football vs Louisville on Saturday

Here are the UKWildcatsWire staff predictions for Kentucky vs Louisville on Saturday.

Kentucky football has been a major disappointment this year, having gone 4 – 7 so far with just one win in the SEC. They’ll play their final game on Saturday, with a chance to end on a positive note during Rivalry Week against the Louisville Cardinals.

The Wildcats have won the last five matchups, including an upset victory last season, but things look much bleaker this year. The offense has been one of the nation’s worst and fans are calling for Mark Stoops’ job.

A win over Louisville would at least pacify many fans, and give them bragging rights for another year over their in-state rivals. How might the game shake out? Here are the predictions from the UKWildcatsWire staff.

Louisville 24 – Kentucky 20

Kentucky is going to be hyped for this game, eager to end on a good win. Cutter Boley will start, and has brought energy to the field when he’s been in. However, the offensive line just isn’t good enough. The defense will keep it close, but the Cardinals win a close one.

Kentucky 21 – Louisville 20

It’s a tough matchup, but Kentucky is playing with nothing to lose. That can be dangerous when there’s everything to be gained from this game. Expect a big announcement game from Freshman quarterback Cutter Boley, as well as the Wildcats defense treating this like their Super Bowl.

Should Cutter Boley start at quarterback for Kentucky vs Louisville?

Looking at whether Brock Vandagriff or Cutter Boley should start the final game of the season for Kentucky.

Heading into this season, Kentucky football fans were hopeful that the quarterback position was in good hands with Brock Vandagriff. The Georgia Bulldogs transfer was a five-star recruit coming out of high school, and there was excitement around him choosing the Wildcats.

However, things haven’t gone as planned for Vandagriff or Kentucky. After a promising start against Southern Miss, he began to struggle against SEC teams.

Through 10 games, before the Texas Longhorns game, Vandagriff was averaging just 150 yards passing per game, and had just 9 touchdowns passing. The Wildcats offense was struggling as well.

Enter Cutter Boley.

Boley, a true Freshman, wasn’t expected to play much this year, but came saw his first action against Florida earlier in the season. He was 0-for-6 in that game.

He saw more extended action versus Murray State and played well. He completed 70% of his passes for 130 yards and 2 scores, albeit against a weaker defense.

On Saturday, he entered the game after halftime, and even against an elite Texas defense, he was solid. He was 10-of-18 for 160 yards overall. There were a few mistakes, but he looked more efficient that Vandagriff did in the first half.

Kentucky has one game left, against Louisville, and there will certainly be some discussion about who should start under center. Vandagriff is the veteran, and possibly more equipped to handle the pressure of a rivalry game. However, Boley may have earned the job.

Who will start in the final game of the season? Fans will have to wait and see what Mark Stoops decides, but at this point, Boley looks like he should be the man versus the Cardinals.

Here are the best images from Kentucky women’s basketball’s big win over Louisville.

For the first time since 2015, the Kentucky women’s basketball team defeated their cross-state rivals, the Louisville Cardinals. Louisville had won seven in a row before the Wildcats got the 71 – 61 win on Saturday night.

The victory was a big one for a Kentucky women’s program that had struggled in recent seasons. Coach Kenny Brooks was hired this offseason to turn things around, and he has made an instant impact, and has Kentucky at 4 – 0 on the season.

Kentucky had multiple players making big contributions in the win. Georgia Amoore led the team in points and assists with 19 and 9. Teonni Key posted 17 points and 9 rebounds, while Clara Strack added 12 points and 9 boards.

The game itself was an exciting one. Louisville led at halftime, but Kentucky sent the game to overtime with a strong fourth quarter. The Cats dominated the extra period, though, and they walked away with the win.

In a rivalry game like this one, there are always a number of big moments captured in photographs. Here are the best pictures from the great Kentucky victory.

Kentucky vs Louisville was named as the second best college basketball rivalry

Kentucky versus Louisville was named the second best college basketball rivalry by Andy Katz.

College basketball analyst Andy Katz recently named Kentucky basketball fans as the nation’s best. Now, Katz has included the Wildcats in another top ten list, ranking the nation’s best college basketball rivalries.

To say Kentucky and Louisville have a rivalry is an understatement. It’s closer to a life-long disdain for each other. Even former players nearly got into a brawl recently at The Basketball Tournament as hard feeling spilled over into the post-game.

Katz ranked the Kentucky vs Louisville rivalry second in the country, behind only Duke vs North Carolina. Indiana and Purdue came in third, but the top two are pretty far ahead of the rest.

This year’s game will take place on December 14th in Rupp Arena. Kentucky has dominated the rivalry in recent years, having won 13 of the last 16 match-ups.

This season’s game should be interesting, with both schools going through a lot of changes since last year. However, like all great rivalries, the players may change, but the emotion remains. Regardless of who is playing, it’s sure to be a battle.

Kentucky vs Louisville Game Preview

Why Kentucky Will Win

Well hello, offense.

More like, hello running game.

The UK attack was stopped cold by Georgia and didn’t exactly warm up against Georgia. Just when it seemed like that was going to be the deal. all of a sudden the ground game kicked in.

The Wildcats might have lost to Tennessee, but the O cranked up over 600 yards, it followed it up with over 400 yards against Vanderbilt, and last week it didn’t slow down with over 700 yards against New Mexico State.

Granted, Louisville has a better defense, but UK’s Chris Rodriguez is one of the hottest backs in the country, the offense is converting third downs in bunches, and …

Why Louisville Will Win

The Cardinals should own the turnover battle.

UK was able to slow down a little bit with the mistakes, but the four giveaways against Mississippi State were a killer and the four giveaways against New Mexico State kept the game from being far, far worse than 56-16.

But Louisville might not need them.

The offense rolled Duke for over 300 yards both on the ground and through the air behind an offensive line that’s giving everyone time to work and has been fantastic for the ground game.

The defense stuffed Syracuse and its ground game in the 41-3 win, it held its own in the tight loss to Clemson, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Who’s going to take control of the game on the ground?

Neither defense is giving up much against the run, but Kentucky’s run D will be a wee bit stronger.

As long as the Cats can avoid getting roasted in the turnover battle, they’ll grind their way to the win in a fun game – even if it’s not aesthetically pleasing. It’s going to be one of the most intense games of the night.
