2022 Kentucky Derby sets Churchill Downs record for money wagered at $179 million

The vast majority was, understandable, not placed on Rich Strike’s winning 80-1 odds.

This past weekend’s Kentucky Derby went above and beyond anything the event had seen before.

According to Churchill Downs, a record $179.0 million was bet on Saturday’s Derby (h/t ESPN’s David Purdum). It’s an increase of 17% of the amount wagered in 2021 and an eight percent increase over the previous track record.

Yet only $501,135 wagered on the win pool was on Rich Strike, the race’s winning horse

The amount bet on Rich Strike was the lowest of any horse in the field, which makes sense given Rich Strikes’ 80-1 odds. But those who did wager on the winner received a nice payout, a payout that could have been much greater if wagered on when the horse’s odds were 300-1 back in March or even 200-1 on Saturday at Circa in Las Vegas.

As the Kentucky Derby sizable increase in wagers over last year, you can bet that next year’s event will receive a huge amount of money in bets.

A ‘drunk’ Drake hilariously shades NBC in Kentucky Derby interview

Drake and Jack Harlow are having a good time and they don’t want it to end.

Raise your hand if you were expecting to see Jack Harlow on your TV screen during your Kentucky Derby viewing.

Now, raise your (other) hand if you had Drake making an appearance.

I’ll wait.

I’ll wait, similarly to how NBC had to patiently wait to cut to a different segment as an admittedly-drunk Drake, ignored all the wrap-it-up signals that were apparently given to him.

Can you blame the man?

He was busy having a good time with fellow rapper Jack Harlow, who was back in his hometown of Louisville for the Kentucky Derby just days after dropping his latest album—appropriately featuring a track titled “Churchill Downs”.

Of course, the two bet on Happy Jack. When in Harlow’s hometown, what other option is there?

Carry on with your Kentucky Derby viewing. Be surprised (or don’t) if there are more hilarious moments prior to the big race.

The best and most outrageous hats of the 2022 Kentucky Derby

The hats are back, folks.

The Kentucky Derby is back in full form in 2022.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the annual race at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, had no paid attendance in 2020 and was limited to about a capacity of about 50,000 in 2021.

But things are back to normal at the track this year, and when the race — which is set for 6:57 p.m. ET on NBC — begins, it could be in front of a crowd that exceeds 150,000.

With it being a normal year for the Derby, everyone’s favorite annual traditions have returned once again in force. That includes perhaps the most iconic annual tradition — the hats, which range from extravagant to flat-out ridiculous.

As fans began to make their way to the track on Saturday morning, here were some of the best.

Mattress Mack came to the 2022 Kentucky Derby with $4 million and an absolutely wild suit

Mattress Mack gets it!

Mattress Mack is pulling up to the Kentucky Derby ready and willing to bet $4 million dollars, and he’s prepared to do so in quite possibly one of the most unique outfits you’ve ever seen.

And by unique, we mean amazing. Because it takes a brilliant mind to even think of getting a jacket customized with every horse since the start of the Kentucky Derby to win the Run for the Roses— but in true Mack fashion, he included the winner and their odds.

The best part of the whole jacket is undoubtedly the inside, where he’s got pictures throughout of “Run Happy,” his favorite horse of all time.

Creativity gets an A+. Execution gets an A+. Shoutout to his designer.

If covering yourself in winners doesn’t provide the vibes you want at the Kentucky Derby, nothing will.

2022 Kentucky Derby: How big is the purse and how much money goes to the winner?

Ever wondered how much money the Kentucky Derby winner makes?

America’s biggest horse race, the Kentucky Derby, is all set for Saturday evening. And while the event is a big day in the world of sports gambling as bettors hope to land a big payout, the real money earners are the race’s participants.

Ever wondered what the reward is for competing in the Kentucky Derby?

Well, riders must finish in the top five to earn any of the Derby’s purse, which remains at $3 million for the fourth consecutive year. The winner will receive 60 percent of the total purse, which amounts to $1.86 million. Then, $600,000 going to second, $300,000 to third, $150,000 to fourth and $90,000 to fifth.

Not a bad payout for just a few minutes of work.
