MAC Tournament: Miami (Ohio) vs. Kent State odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Miami (Ohio) vs. Kent State odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The No. 7-seed Miami (Ohio) Redhawks (14-17) and No. 2 Kent State Golden Flashes (21-9) tangle in a Mid-American Conference Tournament quarterfinal matchup Thursday. The contest at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland is slated to tip off at 4 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Miami vs. Kent State odds and lines, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Miami — which went 8-12 in placing seventh in the MAC — has registered a pair of five-game losing streaks on the season, but it enters this bracket off a pair of convincing wins to close out the regular season. Miami can often struggle on defense, and it did just that in going 3-9 from Jan. 25-Feb. 26. Over that stretch, Miami coughed up 78.3 points per contest. That stretch included a 78-65 loss to Kent State Feb. 1.

Kent State has won four in a row against Miami, while going 3-0-1 against the spread (ATS). The Flashes went 16-4 to place second in the MAC, and they enter this tournament as the conference’s hottest team. Kent has won 12 in a row, last losing Jan. 21 at Buffalo. Kent State plays at a slow pace and with an efficient defense. The Flashes have held foes to a 41.1% accuracy mark from the floor over their 12 straight wins.

Miami vs. Kent State odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Kent State 70, Miami 69

Money line

Miami played poorly in its February loss to Kent State, but the Redhawks have been on a decent trend line since. The more veteran Miami five is worthy of being about a 33-35% choice in this contest. There is value in MIAMI (+220).

Against the spread

Threes are a big part of Redhawks’ game as they have connected at a 39.2% clip on such shots since Feb. 15. Kent may be due a bit of regression with its perimeter defense.

The Flashes are the better team, but the touchdown spread here is a bit much. BACK MIAMI +6.5 (-115).

Over/Under

PASS on a well-made total.

Buffalo at Kent State odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Friday’s Buffalo at Kent State odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Buffalo Bulls (19-9, 13-5 MAC) and Kent State Golden Flashes (20-9, 15-4) close out their respective regular-season slates Friday in Kent, Ohio. The contest at the M.A.C. Center is slated to tip off at 6 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Buffalo vs. Kent State odds and lines, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Buffalo went just 4-5 over a nine-game stretch from Dec. 18-Jan. 28, but the Bulls have rallied to go 9-1 since. The one loss came in their last game, a 92-76 setback against 24-win Toledo, which leads the MAC by one game over Kent State. Buffalo figures as one of the fastest teams in the MAC and also as the league’s top rebounding squad. The Bulls have averaged 14.6 offensive rebounds per game over their last 10.

The Flashes tote an 11-game win streak into Friday’s early-evening tussle. Buffalo was the last team to beat Kent State, claiming a 64-51 victory as a 7-point home favorite Jan. 21. Kent State is 13-1 in its last 14 outings, 6-0 in its last six conference home games, and as mentioned, trails Toledo by one game in the MAC standings.

Buffalo at Kent State odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Buffalo 75, Kent State 71

Money line

Buffalo is a senior-laden group, which has played well on the road. The fast-tempo Bulls sometimes underperform expectations against other quick fives. Slow-down Kent State – albeit a quicker team of late – won’t pose that problem. UB has shot a rock-solid 38.5% from beyond the arc over its last seven games.

That distance shooting and their rebounding make the BULLS (+120) a slight value.

Against the spread

If you’re not interested in backing the upset on the money line, BETTING BUFFALO +2.5 (-115) is worth a small wager here.

Buffalo has covered four in a row in the head-to-head series and seven of the last eight.

Over/Under

Expect a different pace than their first meeting of the season, which finished 33.5 points Under an O/U line of 148.5.

Buffalo averages 80.9 points per game (PPG), which ranks ninth in the country. Kent State, which averages 71.3 PPG, has played higher pace games of later, scoring 77.6 PPG during its 11-game win streak.

BACK THE OVER 144.5 (-115).

Idaho Potato Bowl: Kent State vs. Wyoming odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Tuesday’s Kent State vs. Wyoming odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Kent State Golden Flashes (7-6) meet the Wyoming Cowboys (6-6) at the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl Tuesday at Albertsons Stadium in Boise. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Kent State vs. Wyoming odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

Kent State came up short in the MAC Championship Game against Northern Illinois Dec. 4, falling 41-23. This is Kent State’s fifth-ever bowl game. It won 51-41 over Utah State in the Frisco Bowl, its first-ever bowl win. They were 0-3 in their first three postseason games, including a loss to Delaware in the 1954 Refrigerator Bowl.

Wyoming is making its first trip to a bowl game since Dec. 31, 2019, a 38-17 victory over Georgia State in the Arizona Bowl. The Cowboys also won their only previous Idaho Potato Bowl, topping Central Michigan Dec. 22, 2017.

Prediction

Wyoming 31, Kent State 29

Money line

Play WYOMING (-165) straight up, and don’t worry about the points in what should be a close game. Kent State (+133) snapped its bowl win drought in 2019, winning the Frisco Bowl, but that’s still just one bowl ever. This team is learning how to win big games, and they’re not quite there yet. The Golden Flashes were shut down at Ford Field in the MAC title game, and they’ll be denied here, too.

Against the spread

Play KENT STATE +3.5 (-122) catching the three and a hook. I think Wyoming -3.5 (-102) wins the game, but the Golden Flashes should be able to keep it close on the Smurf Turf in Boise.

Over/Under

The lean is to the OVER 58.5 (-120), ever so slightly. Kent State rolled up 32.6 PPG this season, and it allowed 35.1 PPG. Wyoming isn’t quite as prolific, however, going for just 23.2 PPG in a mostly ground-based offensive attack, while yielding 22.5 PPG. The pass defense was especially strong, allowing just 177.5 yards per game to rank eighth in the country. They’ll give QB Dustin Crum fits all afternoon.

Kent State at Central Michigan odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Wednesday’s Kent State at Central Michigan odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Kent State Golden Flashes (5-4, 4-1 MAC) travel to meet the Central Michigan Chippewas (5-4, 3-2) Wednesday at Kelly/Shorts Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Kent State vs. Central Michigan odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

The Golden Flashes were ridiculous on offense last week against visiting Northern Illinois, outlasting the Huskies 52-47. Kent State picked up 359 yards on the ground and 322 yards through the air.

The Chippewas also had a big-time offensive performance, winning 42-30 as a nine-point underdog in Kalamazoo against Western Michigan. Special teams were a huge part of the victory as WR Kalil Pimpleton had a pair of punt returns for score in the second quarter last week to serve as the difference maker.

Kent State at Central Michigan odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Kent State 43, Central Michigan 37

Money line

KENT STATE (+115) has a tremendous offense worthy of respect. Central Michigan (-140) won’t be an easy out on its home field, but the Golden Flashes have the offense to roll with anyone.

QB Dustin Crum has thrown for 2,092 yards, 11 touchdowns and two interceptions while running for 440 yards and eight scores. But he isn’t a one-trick pony. RB Marquez Cooper has rolled 731 yards and seven scores, while WR Dante Cephas has posted 55 grabs for 807 yards and six touchdowns. Kent State can come at you from a number of ways.

Against the spread

KENT STATE +2.5 (-107) isn’t as great of a value, but if you think this is going to be a one- or two-point game, have at it. It’s better to just play the money line.

Over/Under

The OVER 75.5 (-108) is worth a small-unit play, even though this is a big number. We saw three MAC teams go for 40 or more points in Tuesday’s games, hitting the Over in two of three. Last week the Over was 4-1 in the five mid-week MAC games, including for each of these teams. Expect another high-scoring affair in Mount Pleasant.

Northern Illinois at Kent State odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Wednesday’s Northern Illinois at Kent State odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Northern Illinois Huskies (6-2, 4-0 MAC) and Kent State Golden Flashes (4-4, 3-1) meet Wednesday at Dix Bowl in Kent, Ohio. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Northern Illinois vs. Kent State odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

Rankings according to the AFCA Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

The Huskies are the only team yet to lose a conference game yet, and this very well could end up being a MAC Championship Game preview. NIU outlasted Central Michigan in Mount Pleasant last week, winning its fifth straight game while going 4-1 ATS during the span.

The Golden Flashes started off slowly in the non-conference schedule with trips to Texas A&M, Iowa and Maryland, all losses. But since getting into MAC play, the Golden Flashes have lived up to preseason expectations, with the offense posted 34, 31, 48 and 27 across the past four outings.

Northern Illinois at Kent State odds, spread and lines

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 7:45 a.m. ET.

Northern Illinois at Kent State odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Kent State 37, Northern Illinois 34

Money line

KENT STATE (-180) is a little more expensive than I care to spend on a money line play, but it’s not terribly out of line if you don’t want to bother with laying the points in a potentially close game.

Against the spread

NORTHERN ILLINOIS +3.5 (-108) is worth a look in this game, which should be a close battle. The underdog cashed in all three MAC games Tuesday night, including two outright wins.

The Huskies have posted a 4-1 ATS mark across the past five outings, including a pair of outright victories as an underdog at CMU last week, and at Toledo Oct. 9. Overall, NIU is an impressive 5-2-1 ATS. The Huskies are also a perfect 7-0 ATS in the previous seven following a bye. NIU is also 4-0-1 ATS in the past five trips to Kent, and 7-2-1 ATS in the past 10 meetings overall.

While Kent State has posted a 3-1 SU mark inside the MAC, it is just 2-2 ATS in four conference games.

Over/Under

OVER 67.5 (-112) is the slight lean here, worth a small-unit play. The Over has connected in two of the past three for Kent State, while cashing in two straight for NIU. Both teams have powerful offenses, and they should put on a show in Wednesday MACtion.

Kent State at Texas A&M odds, expert picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s Kent State at Texas A&M odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Kent State Golden Flashes and Texas A&M Aggies meet Saturday night at the Kyle Field in College Station, Texas. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Kent State vs. Texas A&M odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

Kent State rolled up some mighty impressive offensive totals last season, and there is no reason to believe that production will be curbed in 2021.

QB Dustin Crum is back to lead an offense that averaged an eye-popping 49.8 PPG and 7.4 yards per play. WR Nykeim Johnson transfers over from Syracuse to keep the unit humming, and the Flashes return all five on the O-line.

Texas A&M went to and won the Orange Bowl over North Carolina last season, but they must replace QB Kellen Mond. QB Haynes King takes over, but Zach Calzada could also see time. King will have TE Jalen Wydermyer as a top target to help ease him into the starting role.

Kent State at Texas A&M odds, spread and lines

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 10:30 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Kent State +1500 (bet $100 to win $1,500) | Texas A&M -10000 (bet $10,000 to win $100)
  • Against the spread (ATS): Kent State +28.5 (-110) | Texas A&M -28.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 67.5 (O: -108 | U: -112)

Kent State at Texas A&M odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Texas A&M 45, Kent State 30

Money line

Needless to say, betting $100 for every $1 won isn’t a good idea, so AVOID a Texas A&M (-10000) wager at all costs.

Against the spread

KENT STATE +28.5 (-110) is a highly attractive play catching more than four touchdowns. Yes, going to Kyle Field in front of the 12th man is intimidating, and Texas A&M -28.5 (-110) will win this football game handily.

However, the Golden Flashes sport an offense with the quality of a Power 5 school, and they’re no joke. Kent State is going to move the ball, they’re going to be quick, and the Aggies are going to be confused. Kent State’s offense is experienced and will give Texas A&M fits all evening long.

Over/Under

OVER 67.5 (-108) is the play here. As mentioned above, Kent State has a powerful offense, but they also have plenty of question marks on the defensive side of the football. This should allow King and the Aggies offense to move the ball at will, too.

The Kent State Golden Flashes (1-0) visit the Virginia Cavaliers (2-1) Friday night for a 6 p.m. ET non-conference contest at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Va. Below, we analyze the Kent State-Virginia college basketball betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

  • Against the spread/ATS: Kent State +19.5 (+100) | Virginia -19.5 (-121)
  • Over/Under: 124.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Kent State at Virginia: Three things to know

  1. Kent State opened its season with a 90-41 victory over Point Park (Pa.) Wednesday. The Flashes were dominant in forcing turnovers and won the game easily despite going just 5-for-29 (17.2%) from 3-point land.
  2. The slow-things-down Cavaliers opened last season with seven straight victories, but only one was by more than 20 points. Both wins this season — over Towson and St. Francis (Pa.) — have been by margins of 25-plus points. Most analytic pace measurements peg the Wahoos as one of the 20-30 slowest teams in terms of total possessions in NCAA-I.
  3. Senior F Jay Huff has averaged 10.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game in less than 20 minutes of action. The 7-footer has also blocked 8 shots already. Virginia ranked third in the ACC a year ago, swatting away 4.9 shots per contest.

Kent State at Virginia: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Virginia 73, Kent State 51

Money line (ML)

STEER CLEAR, figuring the true odds are well bracketed by the wide 2200-to-10000 berth.

Against the spread (ATS)

The Cavaliers struggled to cover at home last season, especially in the second half of the campaign. From Dec. 18-Feb. 11, UVA went just 1-7 ATS in such games. What helps back this play is the early 61-60 loss to San Francisco (Nov. 27). Virginia bounced back with a 25-point win the next time out (against St. Francis).

None of the shooting, turnover, or rebounding analytics were out of whack in that victory. The St. Francis opponent figures as a solid comp for Kent State.

The slow pace is always a major consideration when trying to peg a big cover, but the overriding pace in this one is the jolt KSU is likely to get going from NAIA schedule fodder to DI top 10. BACK THE CAVALIERS -20.5 (-110).

Over/Under (O/U)

PASS ON THE O/U ACTION. A low-70s vs. low-50s final figures as a probable finish in the tumble of scoreboard digits.

  • Over/Under: 58.5 (O: -115 | U: -106)

Akron at Kent State: Three things to know

  1. Akron didn’t win last week, falling 24-10 at Ohio, but the Zips did something they accomplished just once last season – cover. They have dropped 19 in a row dating back to Oct. 27, 2018, a win over Central Michigan 17-10. Their last road victory was Oct. 20, 2018, a 24-23 victory at Kent State in overtime.
  2. Kent State rolled up 62 points in last week’s 38-point road win at Bowling Green, covering the 20.5-point number. The Golden Flashes have racked up 549.0 total yards per game to rank sixth in the nation, 253.5 rushing yards per contest to check in at 13th, while averaging 44.5 PPG to rank 10th.
  3. These two Northeast Ohio rivals battle for the Wagon Wheel, a trophy awarded for the winner of this series since 1946. Akron has won four of the past five in this series, with Kent State winning last year 26-3. The Zips lead the all-time series 35-25-2. Akron is 0-4 ATS in the past four meetings, and 2-5 ATS in the past seven trips to Kent.

Akron at Kent State: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Kent State 47, Akron 17

Money line (ML)

Kent State (-3334) is not even an option. Any veteran gambler knows that even the surest thing isn’t so sure. Just bet the spread. AVOID this huge risk for such a small return.

Against the spread (ATS)

KENT STATE -27 (-110) has been impressive, led by QB Dustin Crum. He has thrown for 490 yards, six touchdowns and just one interception through two games while also rushing for a score.

The Golden Flashes feature a 7-1 ATS mark across the past eight against losing teams, while cashing in five of the past six inside the league. Akron, on the other hand, has covered just seven of the past 27, and two of the previous 13 as an underdog. The last time the Zips covered back-to-back games was Nov. 23-Dec. 1, 2018.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 58.5 (-115) is worth playing lightly. There is an outside chance Kent State takes care of the Over all by itself. They did it last week against the West’s doormat in Bowling Green. Why not this week against the East’s doormat in Akron?

Kent State at Bowling Green odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Tuesday’s Kent State Golden Flashes at Bowling Green Falcons sports betting odds and lines, with college football betting picks, tips and predictions.

The Kent State Golden Flashes (1-0, 1-0 MAC) visit the Bowling Green Falcons (0-1, 0-1) Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff. Below, we analyze the Kent State-Bowling Green college football betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Kent State at Bowling Green: Betting odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 12:08 p.m. ET.

  • Money line: Kent State -1250 (bet $1,250 to win $100) | Bowling Green +750 (bet $100 to win $750)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Kent State -20.5 (-115) | Bowling Green +20.5 (-106)
  • Over/Under: 55.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Kent State at Bowling Green: Three things to know

  1. Kent State opened with a solid 27-23 victory at home over Eastern Michigan, narrowly missing on a cover as a 4.5-point favorite. The Golden Flashes prevailed mostly behind their rushing offense, going for 212 yards, while dual-threat QB Dustin Crum tossed a pair of TDs while running for another.
  2. Defensively, the Golden Flashes were hot, allowing just 61 rushing yards, while yielding 302 total yards overall. They figure to add to those impressive numbers against the lowly Falcons, who managed just 267 total yards at Toledo in a 38-3 loss last week.
  3. The Golden Flashes have covered four straight on the road, and eight of the past 10 league games overall. On the flip side, the Falcons are just 8-23 ATS in the past 31 as underdogs, while going 6-20 ATS in their past 26 at Doyt Perry Stadium. They’re also 2-10 ATS in the previous 12 as a home underdog.

Kent State at Bowling Green: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Kent State 38, Bowling Green 13

Money line (ML)

Kent State (-1250) is way too expensive at this price, as you must risk $12.50 for every $1 of potential winnings. Over the long haul that’s not a good strategy, as you can go 10-1 on 11 of those bets and simply break even. AVOID.

Against the spread (ATS)

KENT STATE -20.5 (-115) will look to fire out to 2-0 SU/ATS, and the Flashes are a good bet to do so against a bad Falcons team. The Golden Flashes posted their first bowl victory in school history last season, and they’re hoping that was just the beginning of something special. Kent State has cashed in four of the past five trips to Bowling Green, and the road team is 6-2 ATS in the past eight meetings, too.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 55.5 (-110) has cashed in four of the past five meetings in Bowling Green. While that trend is well and good, it’s the struggling Falcons offense which is the reason to back the Under. Bowling Green managed just three points last week, and it averaged 16.0 PPG in 12 games a season ago. The Falcons will likely battle Akron for “worst team” status in the MAC in this shortened campaign.
