Frank Vogel, Kent Bazemore enter health and safety protocol; Kendrick Nunn cleared

The Los Angeles Lakers announced more updates regarding the status of the head coach and two players.

The Los Angeles Lakers have more personnel entering the NBA’s health and safety protocol prior to Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bulls.

Lakers head coach Frank Vogel and veteran wing Kent Bazemore are the two new members of the team that are out, via Mike Trudell of Spectrum SportsNet.

That means Bazemore will not get the start against Chicago. He started at small forward against the Minnesota Timberwolves Friday, but now there’s another hole on the roster.

Assistant coach David Fizdale will be the team’s acting head coach while Vogel is out.

The other news involved Kendrick Nunn. Nunn had entered protocol a few days ago but was cleared Sunday, via Trudell. Nunn, however, will still be out due to a knee injury he suffered early in the season and has yet to make his debut.

Trevor Ariza, Rajon Rondo, Kent Bazemore to practice with South Bay Lakers Monday

The Los Angeles Lakers are sending three players to practice with its G League affiliate Monday.

The Los Angeles Lakers are sending three players to practice with the South Bay Lakers, its G League affiliate, Monday.

Trevor Ariza, Rajon Rondo and Kent Bazemore are those players and have different reasons for the short move.

Ariza is progressing from the ankle injury he suffered before the preseason started. He has yet to make his debut this season, so getting time with South Bay will help him ramp up his conditioning in order to return to the first team.

Rondo and Bazemore have each fallen out of the rotation, so this time allows them to stay ready. Rondo has not played since Nov. 30 when he logged nine minutes in a blowout win of the Sacramento Kings. Bazemore has appeared in garbage-time situations in three of the last six games.

All three players signed one-year deals worth the veteran minimum this summer.

NBA Twitter does not want Kent Bazemore playing for Lakers

The NBA world doesn’t want Kent Bazemore playing anymore for the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Los Angeles Lakers have played 12 games in the 2021-22 NBA season. While it’s still early to judge how players are performing, one Laker has started off cold: Kent Bazemore.

Los Angeles signed Bazemore to a one-year deal for the veteran minimum and hoped he would bring his 3-and-D presence to the roster. L.A. lost Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Alex Caruso and Kyle Kuzma, three critical defenders, over the summer, and Bazemore, theoretically, was a solid replacement.

But among the new signings, Bazemore has struggled on both ends. He’s averaging 5.6 points, 2.2 rebounds, 1.2 steals and 1.1 assists while shooting 35.4% overall and 33.3% from deep.

After going 0-of-7 from deep combined in the last four games and not being  a positive on defense, NBA Twitter wants Bazemore on the bench rather than being a starter:

Kendrick Perkins says Frank Vogel needs to give all of Kent Bazemore’s minutes to Austin Reaves

Kendrick Perkins has an adjustment he wants Los Angeles Lakers head coach Frank Vogel to make regarding the wings.

With the Los Angeles Lakers six games through the 2021-22 NBA season, things haven’t entirely been smooth out of the gate.

The Lakers added 11 new players over the summer to the guaranteed roster, so every player is still acclimating to different styles of play and developing chemistry.

But some have stood out over the others, even though injuries have been a factor in head coach Frank Vogel’s rotations.

Austin Reaves, an undrafted rookie who the Lakers promoted to the main roster after initially signing a two-way deal, has been a revelation in the lineup and has earned the trust of Vogel and praise from teammates such as  LeBron James.

Reaves’ play has former NBA player and current analyst Kendrick Perkins calling for him to play more minutes:

Reaves has already leaped Rajon Rondo in the rotation when the star trio of James, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook is healthy, but Kent Bazemore is a starter for a reason.

He has made some perplexing plays, but he is shooting 42.9% from deep on 4.2 attempts, which is a career-high if it sustains. His defense is usually stout, even if there are occasional stumbles. For the minimum, that’s tremendous value.

Bazemore’s 7-foot wingspan also allows him to guard taller players, something Reaves isn’t capable of.

Reaves will likely continue to be a rotation staple if he keeps playing this way, but he might have to return to the bench when Kendrick Nunn and Talen Horton-Tucker return.

Lakers starting lineup vs. Warriors revealed

Here’s who the Los Angeles Lakers will reportedly start in the regular-season opener against the Golden State Warriors.

The Los Angeles Lakers didn’t have a solidified starting lineup entering the regular-season opener against the Golden State Warriors, but it seems like the plan is now in place.

After the preseason finale against the Sacramento Kings, head coach Frank Vogel discussed how he would consult the front office, LeBron James and Anthony Davis about who would start.

James, Davis and Russell Westbrook are the guaranteed starters, but filling in the two spots around them got complicated when injuries emerged.

Trevor Ariza and Wayne Ellington were two veterans expected to start, which would’ve allowed Davis to start at center, but both are out with injuries. Ariza is out for a longer stretch than Ellington.

For now, the Lakers are expected to start Kent Bazemore and DeAndre Jordan alongside the star trio, according to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports:

This lineup isn’t surprising given how Jordan typically started games with Davis in the preseason, and Bazemore is a two-way glue guy at shooting guard. The Lakers used this lineup to end the preseason.

Spacing issues will materialize since Bazemore and James are the two stable threats from the perimeter, so it’ll be interesting to see how Vogel and company navigate this going forward.

Lakers news: Kent Bazemore praises Russell Westbrook’s pivotal energy

Los Angeles Lakers guard Kent Bazemore says Russell Westbrook’s energy will be key to the team’s success this season.

When the Los Angeles Lakers acquired Russell Westbrook from the Washington Wizards, he would bring more than just the numbers.

Westbrook, a former league MVP, has averaged triple-doubles in four of the last five seasons, but his impact in the purple and gold should extend beyond that.

The point guard has been known to have a tremendous motor anytime he’s on the court, and his new teammate Kent Bazemore is stoked to play alongside him.

“Russ an animal, he’s an animal in every sense of the word, just an absolute beast,” Bazemore said after Friday’s practice. “The force he plays with, the swagger he brings to the team when he’s on the floor, all those things. His energy is infectious, and feeding off of it is amazing. I think he’s going to be an absolute force for us all season.”

Bazemore continued about how Westbrook’s passion could ignite the Lakers on certain occasions.

“The energy he brings every night is going to be pivotal for us with the long season. Maybe some nights we’ll be in a city, low energy and here comes Russ storming down the middle with a dunk to get us going,” Bazemore said. “That’s kind of the intangibles he has as a player, as a person that is going to help us a lot this year.”

Westbrook had a rough start to the preseason, but that’s usually been the case for him since he’s been bouncing around to new teams frequently the last few seasons.

However, he turned in a much better performance against the Sacramento Kings to close out the preseason, so the Lakers must hope that’s a sign of what is to come for the soon-to-be 33-year-old guard.

LeBron James names three Lakers who have stood out in practice

Three players have picked up the Los Angeles Lakers’ system fairly quickly, says LeBron James.

The Los Angeles Lakers have 11 new players on the guaranteed roster for next season, so learning the system is a priority for the team.

Only LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Talen Horton-Tucker return from last season’s roster. Rajon Rondo and Dwight Howard are familiar with how head coach Frank Vogel and company like to operate.

It puts the Lakers in an interesting position entering the new season because most of the other contenders return their core intact. The Lakers need to sort out who the core players are.

The days leading up to the season opener usually foreshadows that, and during the first few days of practice, James noted three players who have emerged thus far.

“I would say K. Nunn (Kendrick Nunn), Baze (Kent Bazemore) and DJ [DeAndre Jordan].”

Nunn is coming off two solid seasons with the Miami Heat as a scoring-minded guard who can set players up for shots. He can space the floor or drive to the rim, giving L.A. an extra scoring option.

Bazemore should have a prominent role given his 3-and-D status on the squad. He made over 40% of his 3s last season and is arguably the best defensive wing.

Jordan will likely compete with Howard for bench minutes, but to see him emerge in the eyes of James could see Jordan playing more at center with Davis at power forward.

The more practices the team has, the more players will stand out.

Lakers’ Kent Bazemore lost a lot of sleep guarding LeBron James

New Los Angeles Lakers wing Kent Bazemore described his matchups against LeBron James.

When the Los Angeles Lakers landed Kent Bazemore on a one-year deal, they added a pesky 3-and-D archetype to the fold.

Throughout his nine-year career, including a short but promising stint in L.A. in the 2013-14 season, Bazemore has sharpened his 3-point shooting while hounding opponents on defense.

Despite being listed at 6 feet, 4 inches, he can guard bigger wings and forwards with a 7-foot wingspan, which is a nice blend with his career-high 40.8% 3-point rate from last season with the Golden State Warriors.

Bazemore’s return to L.A. gives it a steady option who could start or come off the bench, but it’s also Bazemore’s time to team with LeBron James, a player he’s had to guard often as an opponent.

During his introductory conference, Bazemore discussed the troubles James gave him on defense.

“Even when I was in college he was in the league, I’ve always wanted to play against him. I wanted to go against him,” Bazemore said. “I got my chance my first year in Atlanta, Eastern Conference finals, and I realized how different of a beast he was. I lost a lot of sleep having to guard him.”

But those intense moments pushed Bazemore to improve, especially when the going got tough.

“Even when we played them, it’d get chirpy,” Bazemore continued. “His team would put me on the floor a little bit, but I ain’t back down. I think that just kind of drove me to what to beat him.”

The 32-year-old wing will not have to worry about defending James outside of practice; instead, Bazemore will have to supply the 3-and-D production he bestowed the Warriors last season to help the Lakers, and himself, win a title.

Kent Bazemore on Lakers: ‘We are the best team in basketball’

Kent Bazemore has high hopes for the Los Angeles Lakers this season.

Headlined by LeBron James, Anthony Davis and the newly acquired Russell Westbrook, the Los Angeles Lakers immediately established themselves as a contender again in the Western Conference.

The Lakers lifted the NBA championship in the Orlando bubble in 2020. This past season, however, the Phoenix Suns eliminated L.A. in the first round of the playoffs.

The Lakers have had a busy offseason thus far, signing veterans and young talent to inexpensive deals.

Carmelo Anthony, Trevor Ariza, Dwight Howard and Wayne Ellington are the prominent win-now players L.A. has inked to one-year deals.

Also on that list is Kent Bazemore, who signed a one-year contract after playing for the Golden State Warriors last season.

Bazemore has played alongside premier talent before, but in his introductory press conference, he had high praise for the Lakers’ squad entering the season, via Ryan Ward of Lakers Nation:

Bazemore should play an important role for the Lakers: He can guard three positions thanks to his wingspan and defensive IQ.

He also made a career-high 40.8 percent of his 3s last season, so he’ll be a nice catch-and-shoot weapon alongside L.A.’s new big three.

Bleacher Report names Lakers a winner in 2021 free agency

The Los Angeles Lakers received praise from Bleacher Report for the business it’s done so far in free agency.

The Los Angeles Lakers have had one of the busiest offseasons this summer in terms of roster moves.

When the Lakers traded for star guard Russell Westbrook, the roster was trimmed to five players, though Alfonzo McKinnie is now waived. The Lakers needed to sign about 10 players through free agency to complete the 15-man squad.

Los Angeles didn’t have financial flexibility this summer to acquire the prominent names available in the free-agent class besides a $5.9 taxpayer MLE; so the Lakers desperately needed to lure veterans who would take the minimum.

The Lakers achieved that by signing Carmelo Anthony, Dwight Howard, Wayne Ellington, Trevor Ariza and Kent Bazemore on one-year minimum deals.

Even Malik Monk, 23, signed a minimum deal to compete for a championship and raise his value for next year’s free agency; he could be the most intriguing signing of the bunch. Kendrick Nunn, 26, signed for the MLE.

Los Angeles needed to surround LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Westbrook with a competent roster capable of filling in the gaps, and this group of players has recently shown they have the right combination of skills to execute on the court, at least on paper.

With these moves, Dan Favale of Bleacher Report listed the Lakers as one of the winners of the 2021 free agency period:

“Trading for Russell Westbrook has defined the Los Angeles Lakers’ offseason, but that’s not the entirety of it. They made other moves on the margins during actual free agency, and their roster makes more sense because of it.

Bagging Carmelo Anthony, Trevor Ariza, Kent Bazemore, Wayne Ellington and Malik Monk on minimum deals will beef up the spacing of a half-court offense that desperately needs breathing room. They are snipers of varying effectiveness and function — Ellington prefers to work in motion — but the Lakers jettisoned their two leading 3-point makers from last season (Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Kyle Kuzma) to nab Westbrook, one of the league’s worst jump shooters. Adding even league-average marksmen goes a long way under the circumstances.

Kendrick Nunn is a more awkward fit as someone who prefers to operate on-ball, but he provides more north-south jet fuel and converted 42.1% of his catch-and-fire triples last season. Snagging him for the taxpayer’s mid-level exception is a worthwhile talent-in-a-vacuum play.

Dwight Howard does nothing for the Lakers’ floor balance, but he comes cheap, has experience playing beside Anthony Davis and is a muuuch better rim-runner than Andre Drummond. Talen Horton-Tucker’s return also doesn’t help Los Angeles’ shooting, but a 20-year-old who can defend a bunch of different positions has value to a team that’s nearly barren of every other future asset.

None of these moves turn the Westbrook acquisition into a no-risk proposition. Nor does it excuse the Lakers decision to let Alex Caruso walk, despite his chemistry playing beside LeBron James and having the ability to keep him. But Los Angeles entered free agency with supremely limited flexibility following the Westbrook blockbuster and managed to flesh out its rotation in a way that promises actual depth and spacing.

Additionally, as of now, the list of Lakers moves doesn’t include overpaying Dennis Schroder. That’s a huge win.”

This will be one of the most captivating seasons for L.A. in quite some time, but only time will tell if L.A. made the right moves to bring home the franchise’s 18th championship, which would be the most for a single team in NBA history.
