Texas A&M (15-5, 4-3) is still in the middle of the pack in the SEC standings after falling to rival Texas 70-69 in one of the wildest comebacks of the season, as the Aggies held a dominant 22-point lead just minutes into the second half.
On the road, no lead is safe, as Texas freshman guard Tre Johnson engineered the largest comeback on the season thus far, scoring 22 of his career-high 30 points in the second half. At the same time, the Aggies couldn’t find consistency on offense, while the Longhorns found their collective stroke, especially from deep.
With a 69-60 lead and only minutes to go, several missed free throws from forward Pharrel Payne ultimately cost A&M the game. The team ended with a disappointing 3-8 from the line, contributing to their loss as has happened in several other games this season.
Still, coach Buzz Williams’ team moved up to No. 12 in the NET rankings, the program’s highest in-season ranking, while the latest KenPom standings place the Aggies in a solid position heading into week 13.
According to KenPom, Texas A&M is ranked 15th, with the nation’s 40th-ranked offense and 8th-ranked defense. Like the NET, Auburn (No. 2), Florida (No. 5), Tennessee (No. 6), and Alabama (No. 9) are the SEC teams ranked above the Aggies.
Texas A&M will return to Reed Arena to host Oklahoma on Jan. 28 at 8:00 p.m. CST. The game can be watched on the SEC Network.
