No. 13 Texas A&M’s KenPom ranking after 70-69 loss to Texas

After Texas A&M’s 70-69 loss to Texas, here are the latest KenPom rankings ahead of week 13

Texas A&M (15-5, 4-3) is still in the middle of the pack in the SEC standings after falling to rival Texas 70-69 in one of the wildest comebacks of the season, as the Aggies held a dominant 22-point lead just minutes into the second half.

On the road, no lead is safe, as Texas freshman guard Tre Johnson engineered the largest comeback on the season thus far, scoring 22 of his career-high 30 points in the second half. At the same time, the Aggies couldn’t find consistency on offense, while the Longhorns found their collective stroke, especially from deep.

With a 69-60 lead and only minutes to go, several missed free throws from forward Pharrel Payne ultimately cost A&M the game. The team ended with a disappointing 3-8 from the line, contributing to their loss as has happened in several other games this season.

Still, coach Buzz Williams’ team moved up to No. 12 in the NET rankings, the program’s highest in-season ranking, while the latest KenPom standings place the Aggies in a solid position heading into week 13.

According to KenPom, Texas A&M is ranked 15th, with the nation’s 40th-ranked offense and 8th-ranked defense. Like the NET, Auburn (No. 2), Florida (No. 5), Tennessee (No. 6), and Alabama (No. 9) are the SEC teams ranked above the Aggies.

Texas A&M will return to Reed Arena to host Oklahoma on Jan. 28 at 8:00 p.m. CST. The game can be watched on the SEC Network.

Texas A&M basketball rises in KenPom and NET standings ahead of SEC play

Texas A&M has risen in the KenPom and NET standings after defeating Abilene Christian

Texas A&M (11-2) finished the regular season on a six-game winning streak after defeating Abilene Christian 92-54 behind another complete team effort. At the same time, star guard Wade Taylor IV’s 15 points launched him into second place in all-time scoring ranks.

Taylor is now just 212 points away from passing Bernard King for the overall scoring record and will need to average a little over 11 points to place his name in Aggie history as the greatest scorer ever to grace Reed Arena.

Sitting at 11-2 before hosting the Texas Longhorns (11-2) on Saturday night, Texas A&M has steadily risen in both significant rankings, starting with 14th in the KenPom rankings and the 6th-ranked defense. At the same time, the Aggies also rose to No. 21 in the NET on Sunday before dropping one spot to No. 22.

As per the NET, Texas A&M boasts a strong 3-1 record in Quad 1 and 2-1 in Quad 2 matchups. Once SEC play starts, all SEC road games and a number of conference home games will be classified as Quad 1 contests.

Texas A&M will start conference play against the Texas Longhorns at Reed Arena on Jan. 4 at 7:00 p.m. CST. The game can be watched on the SEC Network.

Texas A&M rises in the KenPom rankings after signature win over No. 11 Purdue

Texas A&M’s elite defense is being nationally recognized after defeating Purdue

Texas A&M (9-2) appears to be the top defensive team in the nation following their victory over No. 11 Purdue, winning 70-66 in the Indy Classic. This matchup is expected to be considered a neutral site win, even though the crowd primarily comprised Purdue supporters.

While star guard Wade Taylor IV delivered 15 points, the play of junior forward Pharrel Payne tied Zhuric Phelps for a team-high 16 points and nine rebounds, finishing a perfect 6-6 from the field in his best game of the year.

Returning to the defense, Texas A&M limited the sixth-best three-point shooting team to 35% from the field while outrebounding the Boilermakers 34-23, while the Aggies finished 40% from beyond the arc.

With the win, the Aggies have won five straight against Ohio State, Creighton, Rutgers, Wake Forest, Texas Tech, and now Purdue, leading to a significant rise in the latest KenPom rankings ahead of hosting Houston Christian next Friday.

Rising to No. 18 in the rankings, KenPom considers Texas A&M’s defense the fifth-best unit in the country, and it’s fair to note that the Aggies’ losses to UCF and Oregon were without the entire roster. The Aggies are also playing the 17th most challenging schedule in the nation.

Texas A&M will return home to face Houston Christian at Reed Arena on Dec. 20 at 1:00 p.m. CST. The game can be watched on ESPN+/SECN+.

Where do the Oklahoma Sooners rank in KenPom after Battle 4 Atlantis tournament title?

Where do the Oklahoma Sooners rank in KenPom after securing the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament Title?

This story was updated because an earlier version included an inaccuracy.

The Oklahoma Sooners are off to a 7-0 start to the 2024-2025 college basketball season after going 3-0 in the Bahamas, securing the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament title.

Along the way, the Sooners picked up their first top-25 win of the season, defeating the Arizona Wildcats, and also earned wins over Providence and Louisville.

The trio of games represented Oklahoma’s most significant tests of the season, and the Sooners passed with flying colors.

The Sooners moved up to No. 40 in the nation in the KenPom rankings put together by college basketball analyst Ken Pomeroy. That puts the Sooners at No. 9 in the SEC in his ranking system. The rankings are meant as a predictive indicator for each basketball team in Division 1.

Offensively, the Sooners rank No. 40 in the nation, according to KenPom. They’re No. 44 in the nation on the defensive side of the ball.

Senior [autotag]Jalon Moore[/autotag], true freshman [autotag]Jeremiah Fears[/autotag], and guard [autotag]Kobe Elvis[/autotag] led the way for Oklahoma over the course of the tournament. Moore and Fears each had a pair of 20-point games during their time in Atlantis.

Moore scored 24 points in both of OU’s wins over Arizona and Louisville and was named Most Outstanding Player of the tournament. Fears led the team in scoring with 26 points in the win over Arizona and scored 20 against Providence to open the tournament. Elvis led OU in scoring in the win over Providence.

Porter Moser and his staff have put together a team with multiple scoring threats and a team that plays with toughness down the stretch.

Oklahoma’s next opportunity to build on their undefeated start to the season comes on December 3 when they host the ACC’s Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and former guard Javian McCollum.

Where does MSU Basketball land in preseason KenPom rankings?

You know the college basketball season is right around the corner when the preseason KenPom rankings are released

You know the college basketball season is right around the corner when the preseason KenPom rankings are released.

Michigan State basketball will open the season outside the top 25 in the preseason KenPom rankings — which were released on Monday. The Spartans came in at No. 35 in the preseason rankings.

Out of Big Ten teams, Michigan State is listed at No. 7. Here are the six teams ahead of the Spartans in the preseason rankings: Purdue (No. 10), Illinois (No. 23), UCLA (No. 26), Oregon (No. 29), Ohio State (No. 31) and Iowa (No. 33). Right behind the Spartans was Michigan (No. 36), Maryland (No. 37) and Indiana (No. 39).

Michigan State opens the season on November 4 against Monmouth. About a week after that, the Spartans will face Kansas — who is No. 6 in the preseason KenPom rankings — in the Chamions Classic.

Wisconsin basketball enters season as one of KenPom’s top teams

Wisconsin basketball enters season as one of KenPom’s top teams

Welcome to a highly-anticipated season of Wisconsin basketball.

The Badgers’ 20-15 2022-23 season was a disappointment. The program missed the NCAA Tournament for just the second time since 1998 and went just 9-11 in Big Ten play.

2023-24 has the look of a gigantic bounce-back season. The program returns all of its top contributors (Chucky Hepburn, Tyler Wahl, Steven Crowl, Connor Essegian and others), while adding transfer guard A.J. Storr and an impressive freshman class. It’s likely Greg Gard’s deepest team since taking over as head coach. And it might be his most talented top-to-bottom.

The 2023-24 KenPom rankings agree, at least to start. The Badgers enter the season ranked No. 20 in the nation, good for the No. 4 slot in the Big Ten behind Purdue, Michigan State and Illinois.

Wisconsin begins its quest for another Big Ten title tonight when Arkansas State visits Madison.

The computers don’t like Michigan State basketball entering the season as much as the media

The computers don’t like Michigan State basketball entering the season as much as the media.

Michigan State has been a consensus preseason top five team in every media poll I’ve seen leading up to the 2023-24 season. However, in the initial KenPom rankings that dropped on Sunday, Michigan State is not even in the top 10.

The preseason Pomeroy College Basketball Ratings have the Spartans listed at No. 13 nationally. Michigan State is the second-highest team from the Big Ten behind only Purdue who came in at No. 1. Directly behind the Spartans from the Big Ten was Illinois (No. 19), Wisconsin (No. 20) and Maryland (No. 23).

Check out the top 25 teams in the initial batch of KenPom rankings below or click here for a complete review of all 362 teams.

Florida stays steady in KenPom rankings following Wednesday’s win

Florida finds itself in the same spot as before Wednesday night according to KenPom.

Florida basketball hosted the South Carolina Gamecocks on Wednesday night and came away with a 21-point win to make it two in a row in Southeastern Conference competition. The Gators still have a way to go to get onto the right side of the NCAA Tournament bubble, but the victory gave the fans a lot to feel good about.

However, the win was not enough to move Florida in the updated Pomerory College Basketball Rankings — also known as KenPom — in which the Gators held steady at No. 41. Their most recent opponent USC dropped from No. 244 to No. 274 following its loss.

Next up for the Orange and Blue is a trip out to Manhattan, Kansas, to face [autotag]Keyontae Johnson[/autotag] and the fifth-ranked Kansas State Wildcats, who are currently ranked No. 26 in the KenPom. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m. EST on Saturday, Jan. 28, and the game will be broadcast on ESPN2 as well as the Gators IMG Sports Network.

KenPom sees Gators move up thanks to road win over Mississippi State

Here’s where the Gators landed in KenPom’s rankings after Saturday night’s win.

Todd Golden’s Gators took a step forward on Saturday night by earning a Quad 1 win on the road against the Mississippi State Bulldogs thanks to a surprisingly strong start. The ‘Dawgs fought and clawed their way back into the game late, but the Gators managed to close out a one-possession game — something that has been a bit of a bane for the squad in Southeastern Conference competition this season.

While the win improved Florida’s record to a mediocre 11-8 record overall and a 4-3 mark in SEC play it also gave the team a boost in the objective rankings such as the Pomeroy College Basketball Ratings, also known as KenPom, which bumped the Orange and Blue up five spots from No. 46 to No. 41 on Sunday.

The Gators return home for their next matchup with the South Carolina Gamecocks who are currently ranked No. 244 in the KenPom rankings. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 25, inside the O’Connell Center, with ESPN2 handling the video broadcast and Gators IMG Sports Network taking care of the radio coverage.

Here’s where Gators land in KenPom rankings after close Texas A&M loss

Oddly, the Gators remained exactly where they were before in the KenPom rankings following the TAMU loss.

The Texas A&M Aggies have become the bane of Florida basketball over the past couple of years, now having won four in a row over the Gators — all by single-possession final scores. In fact, TAMU shut the door on the Mike White era last season when it outlasted the Orange and Blue in overtime early in the 2022 Southeastern Conference Tournament.

After the Gators’ win over the Missouri Tigers on Saturday, they found themselves ranked No. 44 in the Pomeroy College Basketball Rankings, also known as KenPom. Following the Wednesday night loss, Florida finds itself in the same exact spot as before at No. 44 while Texas A&M follows closely behind at No. 48.

Next up for Florida is a road trip to face the Mississippi State Bulldogs late Saturday night. MSU holds a 12-6 record overall but just a 1-5 mark in conference play and is currently ranked No. 59 in the KenPom rankings. Tipoff is set for 8:30 p.m. EST inside Humphrey Coliseum in Starkville, Mississippi and the game can be watched on the SEC Network or heard on the Gators IMG Sports Network.
