Penn State’s Class of 2022 is now ranked No. 2

Penn State’s latest recruiting efforts continue to pay off in a big way in the recruiting rankings for 2022

After a brilliant week of recruiting news, Penn State’s Class of 2022 continues to move up in the national rankings. And it didn’t have that far it could have moved. After coming out of the July 4th weekend with the nation’s No. 3 recruiting class according to the 247 Sports composite ranking, the Nittany Lions have moved up one spot.

According to the updated composite rankings from 247 Sports, Penn State has moved up to No. 2 in the nation, passing Notre Dame. The Irish fell one spot to occupy the ranking recently held by the Nittany Lions. Ohio State remains the nation’s recruiting leader with the highest-rated class featuring four five-star recruits in the Class of 2022.

Penn State’s recruiting ranking was given a healthy boost over the July 4th weekend with the additions of four-star defenders Tyreese Fearbry and Zane Durant. The weekend also saw the additions of linebacker Keon Wylie and defensive lineman Kaleb Artis. Penn State also added a JUCO commitment from JB Nelson. The big splash continued on Tuesday when four-star running back Nicholas Singleton from Reading, PA announced his commitment to the Nittany Lions.

Penn State’s Class of 2022 already included a number of four-star recruits as well including wide receivers Kaden Saunders, Mekhi Flowers, and Anthony Ivey, offensive tackle Drew Shelton, quarterback Drew Allar and defensive end Ken Talley, just to name a few.

As of the morning of July 9, here is a look at the top 10 in the recruiting rankings from 247 Sports;

  1. Ohio State
  2. Penn State
  3. Notre Dame
  4. LSU
  5. Oklahoma
  6. Florida State
  7. Georgia
  8. Texas
  9. Oregon
  10. Michigan

Asking Penn State to climb to No. 1 is unrealistic at this point, barring a completely unexpected collapse from Ohio State, but the Nittany Lions are easily on track to record the highest-rated recruiting class under head coach James Franklin yet. Keeping everyone in the class still requires work too between now and the early signing period in December. And it’s possible another school may eclipse Penn State at some point. But the Nittany Lions are in a terrific spot in the middle of the summer.

Penn State commit takes aim at Buckeyes

A Penn State commit for 2022 showed he is not afraid to mix it up with Ohio State on Twitter

There has been no shortage of recruiting buzz for Penn State in recent weeks. The Nittany Lions are on a roll and have moved up to No. 3 in the national recruiting rankings after a big week, and the excitement and enthusiasm is being shared by players in the incoming class. One commit went so far as to poke the stick at the only Big Ten team recruiting at a higher rate than Penn State, that being Ohio State.

Ken Talley, a four-star defensive end from Philadelphia who is the No. 7 player in Pennsylvania who has committed to Penn State, showed he is not afraid to stir the pot on Twitter. Following the commitment decision of Reading running back Nicholas Singleton, Talley took to Twitter to claim no other school is recruiting like Penn State. But he also took a jab at Ohio State in the process.

Naturally, these tweets caught the eye of a number of Ohio State commits, including cornerbacks Jyaire Brown and Ryan Turner.

 

When someone pointed out Talley was hoping to get an offer from Ohio State (the tweet has since been deleted), Talley laughed it off and said he wanted that to motivate others from Philadelphia to realize it can happen for them too.

It is true that head-to-head matchups have clearly favored the Buckeyes over the years, so Ohio State players and commits do get to have some bragging rights. And for as good a class as Penn State is putting together, it is the Buckeyes who currently lead the nation in recruiting according to the recruiting rankings. But it is still encouraging to know an incoming Penn state player is already showing some confidence in what Penn State could potentially do moving forward.

Penn State adds Philly linebacker to Class of 2022

Penn State added a commitment to the Class of 2022 from Philadelphia over the July 4th weekend

Philadelphia is the birthplace of our nation’s independence, so it is only fitting that Penn State set off a few recruiting fireworks with the commitment of a player from the City of Brotherly Love this weekend of July 4th.

Keon Wylie, a linebacker from Imhotep Institute in Philadelphia, committed to Penn State during a live announcement airing on CBS Sports HQ on Saturday, unveiling a Penn State polo shirt underneath his jacket as he did so with his family applauding the decision around him.

Wylie chose Penn State over offers from Pitt and Kentucky, the other two schools announce din his top three at the end of June. Wylie announced his top three not long after he made a visit to Penn State. The trip to Penn State came after a visit to Pitt and a week before a trip to Kentucky.

Wylie is rated as a three-star recruit according to the composite ranking from 247 Sports. The 6’2″, 210-pound linebacker says he was recruited to play a similar position and style as Micah Parsons, who went on to be the No. 12 overall draft pick of the Dallas Cowboys in the 2021 NFL draft. 247 Sports’s composite ranking has Wylie as the nation’s No. 68 linebacker and the 17th-top recruit in the state of Pennsylvania.

Penn State is making good progress in the state of Pennsylvania so far in the Class of 2022. Penn State has commitments from the No. 4 (WR Mehki Flowers), No. 6 (WR Anthony Ivey), No. 7 (edge Ken Talley), and No. 12 (QB Beau Pribula) players in the state and the 247 Sports crystal ball predictions are leaning toward Penn State for the No. 2 (RB Nicholas Singleton) and No. 3 (CB Keenan Nelson Jr.) players.

It’s also worth noting Wylie is teammates with the state’s top-rated recruit, edge rusher Enai White. Penn State has trended pretty well in Philadelphia in this current recruiting cycle, but White didn’t even make a visit to Penn State in June (he did make a pair of unofficial visits in 2019), so it appears Penn State is not even in the running at this time.

Penn State’s Class of 2022 is currently ranked No. 7 on the 247 Sports composite team rankings as of now.
