Looks like Bills coach Ken Dorsey was given promotion

Looks like #Bills coach Ken Dorsey was given promotion:

It looks like the Bills have given assistant coach Ken Dorsey a promotion. First pointed out by WGR-550 radio, the team’s 2021 handbook calls Dorsey’s job title “passing game coordinator/ quarterbacks coach” now:

Here’s a look at that page:

Considering the team never made any sort of formal announcement on Dorsey’s promotion, one could probably assume doing so could be a way to strengthen the team’s hold on him… or at least give him better reason to stay. Dorsey was previously just team’s QB coach.

The reason being is really a low-hanging fruit. He has long been the assumed replacement for offensive coordinator Brian Daboll if he were to land a head-coaching gig.

This past offseason, Daboll did have multiple interviews for head-coaching jobs, but never was hired. Considering that and his Assistant Coach of the Year Award in 2020, Daboll might get hired soon and “locking up” Dorsey to a bigger title could help entice him to be patient.

Regarding such a scenario, the Bills have given internal promotions before in such a manner. Leslie Frazier was originally hired as Buffalo’s defensive coordinator but then earned the assistant head coach title as well.

However, there is a chance that Dorsey himself could leave. This past offseason both the Dolphins and Lions were mentioned as teams that were interested in interviewing him for their vacant offensive coordinator roles. Dorsey did not land either job, but both would have been considered promotions so Dorsey could have had huge incentive to leave.

Dolphins won’t be hiring Bills QB coach Ken Dorsey

Buffalo Bills will retain QB Coach Ken Dorsey in 2021.

[jwplayer yit7dffx-ThvAeFxT]

What might be the final fear in terms of the Bills losing members of their coaching staff this offseason appears to have come and gone.

According to reports via Dolphins Wire, Miami has decided to hire from within to fill their vacant offensive coordinator spot. The job will be filled by two people.

The Dolphins are promoting offensive assistants George Godsey (tight ends/quarterbacks) and Eric Studesville (running backs) to co-offensive coordinators in 2021. Previously Bills quarterbacks coach Ken Dorsey was labeled as a candidate on the Dolphins’ radar.

Dorsey, like offensive coordinator Brian Daboll and defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, will remain in Buffalo in 2021. All three had been connected to various promotions around the NFL, but despite the Bills going 13-3, the whole gang will be sticking around for another go next season.

During the 2020 season, former Bills head coach Chan Gailey was the offensive coordinator for Miami on Brian Flores’ coaching staff.

Report connects Bills’ Ken Dorsey to Dolphins’ offensive coordinator job

Buffalo Bills QB Coach Ken Dorset connected to Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator role.

Earlier this week, the thought was that the Bills would retain most of their coaching staff after vacant jobs around the NFL started to get filled.

First, offensive coordinator Brian Daboll did not land either job he interviewed for, which included the head coach duties for the Jets and Chargers. Then Buffalo quarterbacks coach Ken Dorsey, connected to the Lions and Seahawks, seemed good to go for the Bills’ 2021 season as those vacant OC jobs were filled.

Further good news came late Wednesday as the Texans decided not to hire Bills defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier as their head coach.

But wait, there’s more?

According to a report in the Sun Sentinel from the Senior Bowl, there’s a new potential team to monitor in terms of Dorsey: The Dolphins.

Specifically, the report says that the interest in Dorsey, like interest around the NFL in Daboll, comes because of the development of Buffalo’s Josh Allen. However, the interesting part is that the report states that some in the league  think Dorsey is more of the reason for Allen’s improvements than Daboll, which could be why the Dolphins are interested.

Perhaps speculation, perhaps truth. It’s something that’s likely unlikely to ever be discovered, but it is an intriguing philosophy nonetheless. Reportedly a knock on Dorsey currently is his lack of experience calling plays… which really isn’t even a report. When Daboll was connected to other jobs, Dorsey was pegged the most-likely in-house replacement by some, but the fact that he has no experience calling plays was a concern to those doing so.

Former Bills head coach Chan Gailey was previously the Dolphins’ OC last season but stepped down following 2020. That’s the potential job Dorsey is connected to with the Dolphins.

Seahawks hire Shane Waldron, not Bills’ Ken Dorsey

Buffalo Bills quarterbacks coach Ken Dorsey not hired by Seattle Seahawks as Shane Waldron is.

There was a brief thought that the Bills might lose their quarterbacks coach in Ken Dorsey this offseason. The Lions reportedly had interest first, but then Anthony Lynn landed that gig as their offensive coordinator.

Then the Seahawks reportedly came calling for Dorsey, but that is now… that. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Wednesday, the Seahawks named Shane Waldron their OC.

Waldron was previously the Rams’ passing game coordinator.

Just in this offseason alone, the Sean McVay Rams coaching staff has seen five assistants leave for other jobs, including defensive coordinator Brandon Staley. He was named the Chargers head coach, essentially keeping Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll in Orchard Park next season in the process.

For the Bills, many pointed to Dorsey as potentially Daboll’s replacement if he had left or does in the future, so losing Dorsey might have been considered a blow to Sean McDermott’s coaching staff. That is, of course, speculation that Dorsey would be the next man up.

As of now, it appears the lone coach the Bills are still potentially in a position to lose is defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier. On Tuesday, Frazier had a second interview for the Texans’ vacant head coaching job. We have yet to have any update on Frazier since then/

Three reasons why Ken Dorsey would be a good OC hire for Dolphins

Three reasons why Ken Dorsey would be a good OC hire for Dolphins

It is difficult to say what level Ken Dorsey is a factor in the offensive success experienced by the Buffalo Bills in 2020. And because of that, it becomes even more challenging to decipher whether or not Dorsey would be the right hire for the Miami Dolphins to fill their vacancy at offensive coordinator. But just because there are come uncertainties tied to the qualifications of Dorsey, who has not even been formally attached to the Dolphins’ job, there are still some merits to consider for the Dolphins beyond the scheme and X’s and O’s that Dorsey will bring to the table with a potential interview.

Put the nuts and bolts of football strategy away — here are three reasons that make hiring Ken Dorsey an attractive proposition for the Miami Dolphins.

Potential longevity

This is offensive coordinator No. 3 in three seasons for Brian Flores’ staff. That isn’t necessarily cause for concern when you look at the situation in context, however. Chad O’Shea was brought over from New England with the Dolphins having to wait until after the Super Bowl to make the transition to Flores in the first place. And Chan Gailey was brought in to run an offense with Ryan Fitzpatrick in mind just as much as anyone else. The Dolphins are going a different direction and therefore a different approach is required.

Dorsey, with success, would inevitably become a head coaching candidate. But that would be two or three years down the line, given that he only has two years of experience as a quarterback coach in Buffalo.

Three years of the same offensive coordinator? That’s an eternity based on the current standard.

Quarterback development

Josh Allen’s leap from year one under Dorsey to year two is one of the most impressive leaps in play we’ve seen from any young quarterback in recent memory. Miami has a young quarterback of their own that they’re hoping to develop — so hiring someone who knows that process is an obvious win for the Dolphins. Dorsey isn’t the only variable that boosted Allen’s play — but he never the less had a hand in that evolution.

It hurts the Buffalo Bills

Offensive coordinator Brian Daboll will be back in 2021 for the Bills after getting interest in the head coaches hiring cycle. If there’s going to be an interruption in the AFC East champions’ chain of command, pulling Dorsey out of line may be the only remaining opportunity to create some chaos in the Bills’ building.

Of course, you don’t make your hire based on that information. But it is a nice icing on the cake to help sell his resume provided a few thing are reality:

  • The Dolphins are interested
  • Dorsey is interested
  • Dorsey’s X’s and O’s impress the Dolphins enough to build a firm case for the position

Right now? We know none of these things to be true. But if it trends this way, there’s plenty of evidence to support the move.

Seahawks want to interview Bills’ QB coach Ken Dorsey for OC job

The Seattle Seahawks want to interview Buffalo Bills’ quarterbacks coach Ken Dorsey for their open offensive coordinator position.

The names just keep coming in the Seattle Seahawks’ quest to find a new offensive coordinator.

The Seahawks parted ways with Brian Schottenheimer after three seasons in Seattle and have actively been hunting for a replacement since the end of the season.

A new name was added to the list of potential candidates on Sunday morning, via ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

“Seattle Seahawks want to interview Bills’ QB coach Ken Dorsey for their OC job, per sources,” Schefter tweeted. “Seahawks also have been speaking to Rams’ pass-game coordinator Shane Waldron and Saints’ QB coach Joe Lombardi about their OC job.”

The Bills are a bit busy on Sunday, set to square off against the Chiefs at 3:40 p.m. PT in the AFC Championship Game, so the interview will have to wait for now.

Bills QBs coach Ken Dorsey in running for Lions offensive coordinator job

Buffalo Bills quarterbacks coach Ken Dorsey connected to Detroit Lions offensive coordinator role.

The Buffalo Bills don’t appear to be losing offensive coordinator Brian Daboll this offseason. He interviewed for two jobs with the Chargers and Jets but those clubs decided to go in another direction.

Had Daboll been hired, some pointed to Bills quarterbacks coach Ken Dorsey as a potential replacement. In the future, Dorsey might not be an option at offensive coordinator for the Bills.

According to the Detroit Free Press, Dorsey is one of three candidates for the Lions’ vacant offensive coordinator job. This week, the Lions announced Dan Campbell as their next head coach and he’s currently filling out his coaching staff.

Campbell himself said he has interviewed at least four for the job. The other two candidates referenced in the report are James Urban, the Ravens’ QB coach, and Anthony Lynn, former Chargers head coach. And prior to that, Daboll.

In addition to the Dorsey update, Bills defense coordinator Leslie Frazier interviewed for the vacant Texans head coaching spot. A report from Thursday said that Frazier is one of two candidates under “heavy consideration” for that job.

7 coaches who could replace Brian Daboll as Bills’ offensive coordinator

The Buffalo Bills may need a new offensive coordinator, should the Cleveland Browns hire Brian Daboll. Here are seven potential candidates.

The Buffalo Bills may soon commence an unexpected search for a new offensive coordinator.

Current Bills’ offensive play-caller Brian Daboll is reportedly one of three finalists for the Cleveland Browns’ head coaching vacancy, impressing Cleveland brass with a “strong interview,” per ESPN.

Though Buffalo’s offense largely struggled under Daboll’s watch, his departure would leave a glaring hole on the team’s coaching staff. Quarterback Josh Allen impressed under Daboll’s tutelage, evolving from a project into a serviceable NFL starter with an incredibly high ceiling.

Replacing Daboll would be no easy task for the Bills. Here are seven candidates they should look at, should the Browns ultimately poach Daboll.

Chad Hall

Though unknown to a large portion of the Buffalo faithful, Chad Hall would perhaps be a front-runner for the team’s potential vacancy at offensive coordinator.

A former NFL wide receiver, Hall has been part of head coach Sean McDermott’s coaching staff since his arrival at One Bills Drive in 2017. Hall initially joined the staff as an offensive assistant, primarily aiding in the wide receivers room.

He retained that title in 2018 before being promoted to wide receivers coach in 2019, helping the Bills’ receiving corps construct an overall productive year in which John Brown caught a career-high 72 passes for 1,060 yards and six touchdowns.

With just three years of NFL coaching under his belt, Hall is still relatively inexperienced. He’s yet to call a play in the NFL, and at just 33 years of age, he’d be the league’s third-youngest offensive coordinator.

Yet, there’s something to be said for continuity. He’s well-liked within Buffalo’s front office, this made evident by his promotion to wide receivers coach last offseason. He’s also been around throughout McDermott’s entire stint as Bills’ head coach, already understanding his demands and offensive preferences.

Though the leap to offensive coordinator after just one year as a position coach could be steep, it’s one that Buffalo may be confident that Hall could handle.
