Colts fall to Bills, 27-24, as late rally comes up short

The Indianapolis Colts gave the Buffalo Bills everything they had, but a late rally came up short leading to an early playoff exit.

The Indianapolis Colts entered their wild-card game against the Buffalo Bills as hefty underdogs (+6.5) but didn’t look like a team that cared what Vegas thought throughout.

The Colts dominated the Bills in every aspect of the game but could not stop shooting themselves in the foot. From dropped passes to foolish penalties to questionable play calling and to a missed field goal, Indy was their own worst enemy on Sunday.

Their early exit will be a tough spill to swallow because they had every opportunity to pull off a playoff-altering road upset. Instead, they head home and prepare for an uncertain offseason.

Kemoko Turay feeling confident with more reps

Kemoko Turay is making his presence felt.

The Indianapolis Colts have long awaited the return of defensive end Kemoko Turay given that he has a unique skill set as a pass rusher along the defensive front.

With his bend and speed on the edge, the Colts could use that diverse skill set from Turay, but it has taken him a bit to get going since returning from the injured reserve list due to the ankle injury he suffered in 2019.

But Turay is coming off of his best game on Sunday against the Houston Texans when he tallied four pressures and played 48% of the defensive snaps—good for a season high.

“I’m feeling good. I’m feeling good, actually. Just doing what I’ve got to do, taking care of my body every day, every morning and going out there and trying to be better in practice,” Turay told reporters Wednesday.

Despite being activated from the PUP list in Week 9, Turay has seen limited work as he gets back into game shape. His snaps have been on the lower end of the spectrum but shot up in the Week 15 win over the Texans.

Turay nearly came away with a sack as both he and defensive end Denico Autry crashed the pocket, getting to Deshaun Watson at the same time. But it was Autry who was credited with the sack.

Though getting credit for the sack would have been nice, Turay is just excited that he’s showing more of that burst we saw early in 2019.

“I mean I felt good overall. I mean I didn’t get the sack, but overall I was just happy,” Turay said. “I felt more confident and felt more excited in the game making sure we won overall. I didn’t think anything of it, I just wanted to keep on playing and try to improve every play.”

The Colts have had a solid pass rush this season even if it can go dormant at times. But if they can get Turay going on a consistent basis with speed from the edge, the defense will get even better.

Colts injury report: DE Kemoko Turay listed as LP

Wednesday’s injury report.

The Indianapolis Colts (6-3) returned the practice field Wednesday as they prepare for the Week 11 matchup against the Green Bay Packers (7-2) at Lucas Oil Stadium.

As the team prepares for arguably their toughest challenge this season, they started the week without two starters in the secondary and tight end Jack Doyle, who is still in the league’s concussion protocol.

Here’s a look at the injury report for the Colts on Wednesday:

*DNP = Did Not Participate — LP = Limited Participant — FP = Full Participant*

Name Position Injury Wed. Thur. Fri. Status
Trey Burton TE Rest DNP
Jack Doyle TE Concussion DNP
Justin Houston DE Rest DNP
Kenny Moore II CB Ribs DNP
Khari Willis S Ribs DNP
Mo Alie-Cox TE Knee LP
Julian Blackmon S Pelvis/Knee LP
Kemoko Turay DE Ankle LP

This will be a big week for the Colts and they will certainly need the talents of Moore and Willis in the secondary. It may be tough to come away with a win against Aaron Rodgers if those two aren’t playing. Their statuses should be monitored this week.

Turay logged his first practice since coming off of the PUP list on Tuesday, but it remains to be seen if he will be making his debut on Sunday.

The Colts have two more practices before the injury designations come out on Friday.

Colts activate DE Kemoko Turay from PUP list, waive DT Sheldon Day

Kemoko Turay is officially back.

The Indianapolis Colts activated defensive end Kemoko Turay from the reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list (PUP) and waived defensive tackle Sheldon Day, the team announced Tuesday.

This is just a formality as Turay was expected to be activated this week. With the activation, Turay seems to be in line to make his debut against the Green Bay Packers in Week 11, though it remains to be seen if the Colts will give him a full workload upon return.

The Colts still see the bendy and explosive player that flashed in 2019 before a season-ending ankle injury, which is encouraging for what this front seven can become.

It was a bit of a surprise that Day was waived. However, he hadn’t seen much playing time since returning from the injured reserve list. With Grover Stewart emerging as an elite run defender and Taylor Stallworth outplaying him, Day’s time with the Colts was limited.

The Colts signed Day to a one-year deal in free agency this offseason.

Frank Reich still sees explosive, bendy player in Kemoko Turay

Kemoko Turay hasn’t lost a step since his injury.

The Indianapolis Colts are expected to see the return of a key piece on defense in defensive end Kemoko Turay, whose skill set is somewhat unique in the front seven.

As Turay makes his return off of the PUP list, his speed off the edge and flexibility when running the arc are two aspects that the defensive end room is lacking. They’ve been getting by with the likes of Justin Houston, Tyquan Lewis and Denico Autry. But the skill set that Turay brings will add another element to the pass rush.

Those wondering if his dislocated ankle will hamper Turay’s ability to bend the corner need not worry. Head coach Frank Reich told reporters Monday that they see the same player in practice that Turay was pre-injury.

“What we’ve seen out at practice is the same guy, the same guy with the speed and bend coming off the edge, a disruptive player with a lot of explosiveness – natural knack to get off on the ball, get off on the snap count,” Reich said.

The Colts have been getting a solid amount of pressure on opposing quarterbacks this season even without having to blitz. There are several reasons for that, but the addition of Turay to this front seven will have a major impact.

Even so, Reich anticipates somewhat of a snap count for the Rutgers product if he suits up on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers.

“I think so, I mean if he’s up for the game,” Reich said of a potential pitch count. “It would be natural to when and if he is up, just like there is in practice – he’s on a bit of a pitch count in practice. It would be the same thing in a game.”

It has been a long time coming for the return of the former second-round pick, and the Colts still see a bendy player when Turay has been practicing. That is excellent news for a front seven that’s about to get even better.

Colts to activate DE Kemoko Turay from PUP list

Kemoko Turay makes his return.

The Indianapolis Colts are planning to activate defensive end Kemoko Turay from the reserve/PUP list this week ahead of the Week 11 home matchup against the Green Bay Packers, head coach Frank Reich told reporters Monday.

Turay started the season on the PUP list as he continued to work his way back from the ankle injury that ended his season early in 2019. He did face some complications during the offseason because of COVID-19, but it seems he’s ready to return.

The Colts have been enjoying a nice uptick in pressure rate from their defensive line, mostly thanks to the work being done from the interior. The edge has been a bit inconsistent this season, which makes this addition a necessary one for the second half.

Turay was flashing his potential throughout the first six games of the season in 2019. His speed and bend from the edge are aspects that the Colts don’t currently have on the roster so his return will be a welcome one.

The Colts are favorites to open the week against the Packers this week, and they are hoping the return of Turay will bring them closer to a victory.
