Lions hire Kelvin Sheppard as the linebackers coach

The Lions are bringing back a familiar face to the coaching staff. Former Lions linebacker Kelvin Sheppard is rejoining the team as the new LBs coach, per numerous sources.

The move is not yet official, but Sheppard recently added “Detroit Lions” to his Twitter profile and has retweeted several messages indicating support for his apparent hiring.

Sheppard comes from LSU, where he was hired last March as the director of player development for his alma mater. His NFL career ended after a stint in 2018 with the Lions, his sixth team in eight NFL seasons. Sheppard was a third-round pick by the Bills in 2011 after a stellar college career.

Sheppard joins new inside LB coach Mark DeLeone, whose hiring was officially announced by the Lions on Friday.

Ex-Giant Kelvin Sheppard takes new role at LSU

Retired New York Giants LB Kelvin Sheppard has been hired as the director of player development at LSU.

Former New York Giants linebacker Kelvin Sheppard, who spent two seasons in blue from 2016-2017, has moved onto the next phase of his career, joining LSU as its director of player development.

“Kevin is a great teacher and mentor and someone that has earned the respect and love of our players,” LSU head coach Ed Orgeron said, via Sports Illustrated. “We are honored to have one of the greatest players in LSU history as part of our coaching staff. This is a home run hire.

“Excited about him. He’s going to take Kevin Faulk’s place. That makes three full time assistants on our staff that played football and graduated from LSU and we’re very proud of that.”

Sheppard, an LSU alumni, was originally a third-round pick of the Buffalo Bills in the 2011 NFL Draft. After two seasons in Buffalo, he was traded to the Indianapolis Colts and later signed with the Miami Dolphins.

In 2016, Sheppard joined the Giants for his first stint and later returned in 2017 after spending less than one month with the Chicago Bears. His career then wrapped up in 2018 with the Detroit Lions.

In 23 games (17 starts) with the Giants, Sheppard recorded 99 tackles (two for a loss), six passes defensed and the only two interceptions of his career.
