UFC on ESPN 29: Jared Cannonier vs. Kelvin Gastelum odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 29 odds and lines between Jared Cannonier and Kelvin Gastelum, with MMA picks, tips and predictions.

In a middleweight fight in the main event, Jared Cannonier faces Kelvin Gastelum Saturday at UFC on ESPN 29 – also known as UFC Vegas 34 – at the UFC’s APEX Facility. The prelims will be televised on ESPN2/ESPN+ at 7 p.m. ET, with the main card will be televised on ESPN/ESPN+ at 10 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the UFC on ESPN 29 Cannonier vs. Gastelum odds and lines, with MMA picks and predictions.

Cannonier is looking to bounce back after a unanimous-decision loss at UFC 254 against Robert Whittaker last time out Oct. 24. That snapped a three-bout win streak – all via KO/TKO. Four of his past five outings have ended via stoppage.

Gastelum is also coming off a loss to Whittaker in the main event April 17. That loss came by way of unanimous decision with four of his past five fights going the distance. He is 1-4 during the span, but losses to Whittaker, Jack Hermansson, Darren Till and Israel Adesanya is nothing to be ashamed about.

UFC on ESPN 29 Cannonier vs. Gastelum: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Records: Cannonier 13-5-0 | Gastelum 17-7-0

Fight result (2-way line or money line)

CANNONIER (-145) is a strong play in the main event. Gastelum (+115) has been competitive in the past five outings but on the short end against higher-end competition. This should be no different, but you can expect it to go long into the night.

Over/Under (O/U)

Playing YES (-115): WILL THE FIGHT GO THE DISTANCE? is a good bet. Five of Gastelum’s past six outings have ended up needing the assistance of the judges to determine a victor.

In addition, I feel Cannonier wins this one, so take CANNONIER ON POINTS (+240) for a tremendous value with the chance to more than double your initial wager.

UFC on ESPN 22 Whittaker vs. Gastelum: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Records: Whittaker 23-5 | Gastelum 17-6

Fight result (2-way line or money line)

Whittaker (-275) will cost you nearly three times your potential return, so we’ll have to get more specific. He towers over Gastelum by three inches, and he holds a two-inch reach advantage over the southpaw, too.

In addition, Whittaker is ahead 4.52-to-3.64 in significant strikes landed per minute. If Gastelum holds an advantage it is in the ground game, where he has a 1.22-to-0.43 takedown average lead and 39.13-to-27.27 takedown accuracy percentage.

Whittaker has bounced back from a title loss to Israel Adesanya at UFC 243 on Oct. 5, 2019, posting unanimous-decision wins over Darren Till and Jared Cannonier. He’ll keep the streak going with another distance-win over Gastelum, so bet WHITTAKER ON POINTS (+120) for a good value.

Over/Under (O/U)

I like Whittaker to win on points, so play YES (-130): WILL THE FIGHT GO THE DISTANCE?. OVER 3.5 ROUNDS (-165) and/or OVER 4.5 ROUNDS (-140) are worth playing, too, if you’re looking for a little bit of wiggle room.

UFC on ESPN+ 30: Jack Hermansson vs. Kelvin Gastelum odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s UFC on ESPN+ 30 fight between Jack Hermansson and Kelvin Gastelum, with MMA betting odds, picks, tips and bets.

Jack Hermansson and Kelvin Gastelum meet in a middleweight bout on the main card at UFC on ESPN+ 30 – also known as UFC Fight Night 172 – Saturday at the UFC’s Fight Island facility on Yas Island, United Arab Emirates. The prelims kick off at 5 p.m. ET on ESPN/ESPN+, followed by the main card set for 8 p.m. ET.

Hermansson (20-5) will tower over Gastelum (16-5) when the two step toe to toe in the octagon Saturday night. The Norwegian middleweight stands 6-foot-1 to just 5-foot-9 for the American. In addition, Hermansson owns a huge 77.5″ to 71.5″ reach advantage, so you can bet Gastelum will be looking to socially distance himself from his lanky counterpart as much as possible.

Hermansson will be looking for his sixth finish at the middleweight division. He ranks sixth in shortest average fight time in his weight class at 8:05. He’ll be looking to toss his weight around, as he checks in at 21:53 in control time, and 27.1 in control-time percentage, whereas Gastelum isn’t even a blip on the radar in those two departments. Hermansson also ranks ninth with a 19.5 top-position percentage.

Where Gastelum has a huge advantage is with his fists in an upright fight. He has recorded six knockdowns landed, or 0.80 per 15 minutes. Hermansson can hold his own in that department, too, however, as he ranks second among active middleweights with 5.13 significant strikes landed per minute, and he is No. 1 overall with a 2.57 striking differential.

Jack Hermansson vs. Kelvin Gastelum betting odds

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Friday at 8 a.m. ET.

Hermansson (-110) does so many different things well, and the height and reach advantage are impressive. However, GASTELUM (-110) is hungry after a two-bout losing skid. He lost a title fight against Israel Adesanya, and followed it up with a disappointing split-decision setback to Darren Till last time out at UFC 244. The southpaw could use a big win to snap him back on track, and he’ll get that with decision victory Saturday. As such, taking GASTELUM ON POINTS (+300) is a particularly attractive prop. You’ll also want to take YES (-118): WILL THE FIGHT GO THE DISTANCE?
