Liberty defeated Fever in front of a record-breaking crowd at Barclays Center

The New York Liberty took down the Indiana Fever, 91-80, on Saturday in front of a record-breaking crowd at Barclays Center.

The New York Liberty defeated the Indiana Fever 91-80 on Saturday in front of a record-breaking crowd at Barclays Center. The sellout crowd of 17,735 set a new all-time regular season attendance record for the Liberty.

The Liberty also set WNBA history by becoming the first team to have all five starters make multiple 3-pointers and also tied the franchise record for most players with multiple 3s made in a single game.

Breanna Stewart led the Liberty with 24 points and Jonquel Jones posted a double-double for the second consecutive game with 14 points and 12 rebounds. On the Fever side, rookie guard Caitlin Clark led Indiana in scoring with a career-high 22 points and a team-high eight assists and six rebounds. Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell was their second-leading scorer with 17 points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals.

This was the third consecutive sellout crowd Indiana has played in front of to open the 2024 regular season. The Liberty won fastbreak points, 28-2, which ultimately made the difference in the game and pushed them to victory.

Iowa’s Caitlin Clark passes former Ohio State guard Kelsey Mitchell for all-time Big Ten scoring lead

A former Ohio State great is no longer the all-time Big Ten scoring leader in women’s basketball. #GoBucks

The inevitable happened.

Iowa basketball star Caitlin Clark has been putting up some astronomical scoring numbers since her arrival in Iowa City, and you just knew if she stayed healthy, she was going to break some major records.

One of those fell tonight when Clark passed former Ohio State guard Kelsey Mitchell for the all-time Big Ten scoring lead in a game against the Northwestern Wildcats. Mitchell, who played for the Buckeyes from 2014-2018, tallied 3,402 points in her career, but that was easily topped by Clark on Wednesday night.

Either way, I’m not sure many knew that Mitchell still held the all-time scoring record in the Big Ten. Clark is now second all-time in the NCAA too, meaning Mitchell is now No. 3 all-time in the NCAA record books.

Clark is chasing Washington’s Kasey Plum who scored 3,527 points in her career. That record is almost sure to fall as well in the very near future.

Team USA women win gold at the 3×3 AmeriCup in Puerto Rico

Dearica Hamby was named the tournament MVP and led her team in scoring with 33 points.

Team USA women’s 3×3 team won gold at the FIBA 3×3 AmeriCup on Sunday. The team consisted of Dearica Hamby (Los Angeles Sparks), Kelsey Mitchell (Indiana Fever), Katie Lou Samuelson (Los Angeles Sparks) and Camille Zimmerman (USO Mondeville).

Hamby was named the tournament MVP and led her team in scoring with 33 points. The scoring system is different in 3×3, with each bucket inside the arc earning one point and each bucket outside the arc earning two points.

This was the 3×3 debut for both Hamby and Mitchell. Hamby, however, was sure she would be able to adjust to the different style of play.

“I should be able to adjust to 3×3 pace because I’m an up-tempo-hustle-energy player,” Hamby said. “You can’t learn how to play this style until you do it, but it’s basketball at the end of the day.”

The team was coached by Jennifer Rizzotti, the team president for the Connecticut Sun and a former professional basketball player and coach.

Rizzotti shared this on Instagram in regards to Hamby’s amazing game-winning buzzer beater.

2023 USA 3×3 Women’s AmeriCup Team roster announced

The team is comprised of four athletes who bring a combination of USA Basketball and professional 3×3 experience.

On Monday, USA Basketball announced the 2023 Women’s 3×3 AmeriCup team. The team comprises four athletes who bring a combination of USA Basketball (5-on-5 and 3×3) and professional 3×3 experience.

The team includes Dearica Hamby (Los Angeles Sparks), Kelsey Mitchell (Indiana Fever), Katie Lou Samuelson (Los Angeles Sparks) and Camille Zimmerman (USO Mondeville).

“It’s been my dream since I was a little kid to represent my country,” said Zimmerman. I wanted to do this tournament in particular because last year, we finished third and I wanted redemption. When they called and said I could play, I was extremely happy. It’s another chance at redemption and another chance at gold.”

Zimmerman won bronze at the 2022 3×3 AmeriCup and competed in the 2022 and 2023 FIBA 3×3 Women’s Series. Samuelson is a six-time 5-on-5 gold medalist. This will be her second 3×3 assignment after helping qualify the USA for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics with a first-place finish at the 2021 FIBA 3×3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

This will be both Hamby and Mitchell’s debut in 3×3. Hamby participated in the 5-on-5 USA women’s national team training camp and exhibition against Duke earlier this month. Mitchell most recently took part in the 2022 World Cup qualifying window in February.

The 2023 FIBA 3×3 AmeriCup is set for Dec. 1-3 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Watch: Jewell Loyd ties WNBA record with nine 3-pointers in a game

She is on fire this season.

Former Notre Dame guard [autotag]Jewell Loyd[/autotag] already is having her best season ever with the Seattle Storm. Plus, she seemingly is pushing herself to new heights every game. The latest example came in the Storm’s 93-86 loss to the Washington Mystics. Despite the defeat, Loyd did everything she could in scoring 39 points and tying the WNBA single-game record with nine 3-pointers:

Loyd had a chance to break the record at the final buzzer, but her shot went off the rim. The way the All-Star and former top overall pick has been playing, don’t be surprised if she has another chance to break that record this season. For now, she’ll have to be content with matching the mark set by the Indiana Fever’s Kelsey Mitchell in 2019.

As well as Loyd as played, it hasn’t be enough to prevent a six-game losing streak for the Storm that has given them the league’s worst record at 4-16. All she can do is continue to play well. At least Storm fans can look forward to that.

Former Ohio State women’s basketball great, Kelsey Mitchell, makes WNBA All-Star team

In case you missed it, congrats to Kelsey Mitchell! #GoBucks

Former Ohio State women’s basketball star, Kelsey Mitchell, was named to her first WNBA All-Star game recently, as a reserve.

Mitchell’s accolades in college were numerous. She played for the Buckeyes from 2014 to 2018 and was named a four-time All-American. She led OSU to two Big Ten championships and finished her career averaging 24.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.9 assists in the scarlet and gray. She still stands as the second all-time leading scorer in women’s NCAA history behind Washington’s Kelsey Plum.

Once in the WNBA, Mitchell has continued to put up impressive numbers, somehow missing out on several All-Star teams. With the Indiana Fever this year, she has averaged 17.0 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 2.9 assists so far this season.

Call us biased maybe, but it’s kind of crazy that she hasn’t made an All-Star squad yet, and that she only made it as a reserve this year. Something tells me there brighter things ahead on the horizon.

2023 Dawn Staley Community Leadership Award recipient announced

The 2023 recipient of the Dawn Staley Community Leadership Award is Indiana Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell.

The Dawn Staley Community Leadership Award “was created to recognize a WNBA player who best exemplifies the characteristics of a leader in the community where they work or live.”

The 2023 award recipient is Indiana Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell.

“The WNBA is extremely proud to see Kelsey recognized for her volunteer work and community impact,” WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said. “Kelsey’s work with young people and families in her community continues to make an enormous positive influence, and she echoes the example set by Dawn Staley as a role model in sports. Along with her fellow WNBA players, Kelsey is dedicated to making the world a better place for the next generation.”

Mitchell founded the KelzHoop Foundation, which aims to encourage and support student-athletes with limited opportunities in their pursuit of playing competitive sports.

“As a player in the WNBA, we are always pushing to be recognized for what we can accomplish both on and off the court,” said Mitchell. “The Dawn Staley Community Leadership Award is the pinnacle of what it means to be ‘more than an athlete.’ It is upon all of us to inspire the next generation to be the best people they can possibly be throughout all of our communities. I will carry the responsibility as a Dawn Staley Community Leadership Award winner with immense pride.”

Mitchell was chosen by a designated committee as the recipient of the award among a pool of other nominated WNBA players. The WNBA will make a $10,000 donation to the KelzHoop Foundation on behalf of Mitchell.

Throughout 2023, Mitchell participated in community events including the Million Meal Marathon, Season of Giving Dinner, the BIG Toy Giveaway, a Jr. NBA event in Louisville, Kentucky, Dick’s Sporting Goods Shop with a Pro and the Kroger Shoe Giveaway. She also traveled to two local Indiana high schools on National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) to share the impact sports have had on her life.

“Community service is a selfless act. With all of the pressures, travel and time away from family that players balance, they could easily make excuses on why they don’t have time to do anything extra,” Staley said. “You find the moments where you can utilize your platform to elevate others. You somehow find the energy to give because you know that you have the resources that communities need.

“Kelsey exemplifies what it means to have a servant’s heart. She is no stranger to being a community advocate and philanthropist or to this award. She is the first player to win the Dawn Staley Award in college and the WNBA and I am proud of the leadership she displays, on and off the court.”
