Auburn vs UMass: Tale of the Tape

Auburn enters Saturday’s game with UMass as major favorites, but how do they stack up against the underdogs?

The college football season finally kicks off for Auburn on Saturday against 1-0 UMass. The Minutemen are coming off an excellent performance on the road vs. New Mexico State, winning 41-30 on the back of great play from Clemson transfer quarterback [autotag]Taisun Phommachanh[/autotag] and a stout showing from their defensive line.

While the Minutemen surely have momentum coming into this game, there is a reason BetMGM has them as 35.5-point underdogs against the Tigers in Jordan-Hare. The talent gap is wide, but do the direct comparisons support the overwhelming idea this game will be a blowout?

Most football teams’ success is contingent on the play of their quarterback, and both of these teams have a good one.

The aforementioned [autotag]Taisun Phommachanh[/autotag] had an efficient, well-rounded, performance in week one. Phommachanh completed 10 of his 17 passes for 192 yards and was also his team’s leading rusher, compiling 96 yards on the ground on 17 carries.

Still, it’s hard not to give the edge to Auburn quarterback [autotag]Payton Thorne[/autotag] here. Although he does not nearly pose the threat on the ground that Phommachanh does (He had 270 rushing yards in three seasons at Michigan State), Thorne is clearly the more established passer.

Over three seasons for the Spartans, Thorne racked up 6,501 passing yards to go along with 49 touchdowns.

Phommachanh on the other hand, played sparingly for Clemson and Georgia Tech before transferring this season. The UMass QB has only thrown 70 passes in four-plus years, completing 34 of them for 409 yards and one touchdown.

The Quarterback edge clearly goes to [autotag]Payton Thorne[/autotag] and Auburn.

Experience gives the Tigers the edge in the quarterback battle, and the same goes when looking at the running backs as well.

Auburn running back [autotag]Jarquez Hunter[/autotag] is expected by many, including myself, to have a monster season for the Tigers. The junior has averaged a magnificent 6.5 YPC over the past two years, rushing for 1,261 yards and 10 touchdowns on 193 career carries.

Conversely, UMass starter [autotag]Kay’Ron Lynch-Adams[/autotag] came into the season with only 206 carries for 731 yards in four seasons at Rutgers and UMass. Lynch-Adams had a very nice game in his team’s opener last weekend, rushing for 79 yards and scoring twice. Still, Auburn’s All-SEC third-team back has the clear edge here.

As for the final skill position group on offense, the wide receivers, it is hard to gauge which team has the upper hand, at least for now. UMass ran the ball more than twice as much as they threw it in week one, leaving some mystery as to how explosive their pass catcher can be.

Auburn’s receiving core also has a great deal of mystery heading into the season. The team is starting two transfers at the X and Z positions, [autotag]Shane Hooks[/autotag] and [autotag]Jyaire Shorter[/autotag], respectively. Although both have had great camps, it is hard to tell how either will adjust to a talented SEC after transferring from smaller schools.

It is too early to give either team an edge in this department.

The one area on the field where the huge underdogs could give Auburn a run for their money is the defensive front. The Minutemen front seven wreaked havoc against the New Mexico State offensive line in week one, sacking New Mexico State quarterback Diego Pavia three times.

Auburn’s defensive line has struggled in recent years, particularly against the run. This year’s down lineman rotation features three transfers, [autotag]Mosiah Nasili-Kite[/autotag], [autotag]Justin Rogers[/autotag], and [autotag]Lawrence Johnson[/autotag], as well as freshmen, [autotag]Keldric Faulk[/autotag].

The Tigers are also starting two transfers at the linebacker spots in jack [autotag]Elijah McAllister[/autotag] and MLB [autotag]Austin Keys[/autotag].

It may take some time for these new Tigers to get their footing, and that could lead to some early gaping holes for a UMass team that has made it clear they want to run the ball.

I’m giving the ever-so-slight edge to UMass in this category just because of the unknown surrounding Auburn’s front seven.

Despite the surpassingly close comparisons across the defensive front and receiver groups, Auburn still has the clear edge as a team in their home opener. They will attempt to show the Jordan-Hare crowd that edge when the teams kick off at 2:30 CST on Saturday.

Can Auburn pull off the Highland Home trifecta?

Hugh Freeze has swayed brothers Keldric and Jakaleb Faulk to pledge to Auburn. Can he convince four-star EDGE CJ May to do the same?

The 2022 Highland Home Flying Squadron had one of the best defenses in small-school Alabama football last season thanks to the efforts of three stout defenders.

If you were to combine the average heights and weights of [autotag]Keldric Faulk[/autotag], [autotag]Jakaleb Faulk[/autotag], and [autotag]CJ May[/autotag]…. you would get a 6-4, 231-pound dual-threat beast.

As the calendar turns to 2023, Keldric Faulk is on Auburn’s campus and Jakaleb Faulk has announced his intention to come to Auburn. However, May is enjoying the fact that his recruitment is starting to unfold.

May is a four-star EDGE from the 2025 class and will have two more seasons to compete alongside Jakaleb Faulk on the high school level. Last week, May included Auburn in his top ten.

In a recent interview with Jason Caldwell of 247Sports, May says that he is impressed at how quickly [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] has changed the outlook of Auburn football.

“They’ve definitely turned the whole program around,” May said. “I love everything about the whole staff, especially coach (Jeremy) Garrett and coach (Vontrell King-Williams). Those are my guys. It’s more of a brother connection than a coach connection. I have a great thing with them.”

May says that he is taking his time with his recruitment, and does not have a timetable for committing to a program. However, On3 has forecasted a 25.6% chance that Auburn lands him. He plans to make a few visits to the Plains this season as well.

Keldric Faulk named a preseason true freshman All-American by On3

There is plenty of hype for Faulk ahead of his first season on the Plains.

[autotag]Keldric Faulk[/autotag] may just be a freshman but he had one of the best spring and fall camps of anyone on Auburn’s roster and is set to make an instant impact for the Tigers.

The former four-star recruit has not only made the move from jack linebacker to defensive end after filing out his 6-foot-6 frame, he now projects to be the starter there over several veterans.

It’s safe to say the hype has reached the national stage as On3’s Charles Power named him to his 2023 Preseason True Freshman All-American team. Powers scouted him as a senior at Highland Home and believes he is one of the most physically impressive freshmen along the defensive line this year.

“There’s not many players on Auburn’s roster, especially the defensive line, that look like him. … I think it’s very encouraging, given what we’re hearing about how he’s looked so far at Auburn. … I think he has the potential to be a key cog in [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag]’s first couple years.”

It will be interesting to see Auburn handles his reps as a true freshman but he is undeniably one of the top players on the roster and his growth as the season progresses will be worth watching.

Faulk will have his first chance to show he is worthy of this honor when the Tigers welcome UMass to Jordan-Hare Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 3.

Watch: Keldric Faulk attends his brother’s commitment ceremony

Four-star EDGE Jakaleb Faulk announced his pledge to Auburn on Monday evening, and the Tigers’ top 2023 signee was on hand to celebrate.

Commitment ceremonies are a right of passage for the nation’s top college prospects.

Four-star 2025 EDGE [autotag]Jakaleb Faulk[/autotag] experienced his special moment on Monday afternoon at his school, Highland Home High School. He was surrounded by family and friends as he publically announced that he would be committing to Auburn.

After choosing Auburn over in-state rival Alabama, Faulk received a surprise visit from his older brother, [autotag]Keldric Faulk[/autotag]. It was not all that long ago that Keldric Faulk flipped his commitment to Auburn from Florida State, and now he will get to share his college experience with his younger brother starting with the 2025 season.

Rosie Langello of WSFA-TV in Montgomery caught the moment that Jakaleb noticed that Keldric had made the trip home to witness the special moment.

Auburn fans were ecstatic to learn that their favorite team snagged a four-star athlete from the 2025 class. Here’s a look at some of the best reactions to Faulk’s commitment from X, formerly known as Twitter.

Four-star EDGE Jakaleb Faulk commits to Auburn

Hugh Freeze has now landed brothers Keldric and Jakaleb Faulk since becoming head coach.

Auburn football added another talented prospect to its 2025 class on Monday.

[autotag]Jakaleb Faulk[/autotag], a four-star EDGE from Highland Home, Alabama, announced his commitment to Auburn on Monday, becoming the second player to commit to [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag]’s 2025 recruiting class. Faulk chose the Tigers over in-state rival, Alabama.

Faulk is now set to join his brother, [autotag]Keldric Faulk[/autotag], on the Plains ahead of the 2025 football season. Keldric flipped his commitment from Florida State to Auburn prior to early signing day in 2022 and is expected to contribute to the Tigers’ defensive line this season.

In a recent interview with On3, Faulk said that his relationship with linebackers coach [autotag]Josh Aldridge[/autotag], as well as the trajectory of the program under [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag], are several reasons why he considered Auburn.

“Auburn, I love what Coach (Hugh) Freeze is doing,” Faulk said. “Coach (Josh) Aldridge has been like a big brother to me. He calls me and talks to me for a good 10 minutes. There are great people at Auburn and it has a great environment. I love it there.”

Faulk is the No. 10 player from the state of Alabama for the 2025 cycle and is the nation’s No. 13 EDGE.

It’s down to two SEC programs for Auburn edge target Jakaleb Faulk

One of the top defenders in the 2025 class is ready to make his commitment.

It’s down to Auburn and Alabama for [autotag]Jakaleb Faulk[/autotag], one of the top defenders in the 2025 recruiting cycle.

Faulk spoke with Auburn Undercover’s Christian Clemente to preview his commitment on Monday and broke the news that his recruitment was down to the two in-state programs for the Highland Home product. He revealed the quick work that [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] has done at Auburn is one of the things that made the Tigers a finalist.

“What stands out about Auburn is the way they’re building stuff so fast. The way that the energy is with Coach Freeze about everything he’s bringing to the school. It’s just amazing to watch.”

He would know about the turnaround than most, his older brother is defensive end [autotag]Keldric Faulk[/autotag] who has been a star of spring and fall practice for the Tigers.

The younger Faulk is the No. 123 overall player and No. 12 edge in the 247Sports Composite ranking. He is also the No. 11 player from Alabama.

Two of Auburn top recruiters are leading the charge for the Tigers with secondary coach [autotag]Zac Etheridge[/autotag] and linebackers coach [autotag]Josh Aldridge[/autotag] working to land the 6-foot-3, 225-pounder.

Auburn has already landed one defensive lineman in the 2025 cycle, in four-star Opelika product [autotag]Malik Blocton[/autotag], adding Faulk would give them a great foundation to the class.

Hugh Freeze provides injury update after Auburn’s second scrimmage of fall camp

Several expected contributors were unable to play in Auburn’s scrimmage on Saturday.

Auburn has been battling injuries throughout fall camp and [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] provided an update about the health of the team Saturday after Auburn’s second scrimmage of fall camp.

The wide receiver group and defensive front have been hit the hardest and that was still the case with several expected contributors unable to play.

Defensive end [autotag]Keldric Faulk[/autotag] and pass-rusher [autotag]Jalen McLeod[/autotag] were both unable to play in the scrimmage. Faulk “tried, but he’s not ready,” Freeze admitted.

Wide receivers [autotag]Nick Mardner[/autotag], [autotag]Koy Moore[/autotag] and [autotag]Malcolm Johnson Jr.[/autotag] as well as linebacker [autotag]Austin Keys[/autotag] were also unable to practice.

“Now its time for us to get a lot of those guys out of those yellow jerseys hopefully, and get them healthy with two weeks to go,” Freeze said. “We’re without some guys we’ve been counting on for sure.”

Four-star EDGE CJ May lists Auburn in top-10

The four-star EDGE was a teammate of Auburn freshman Keldric Faulk at Highland Home High School.

Auburn football landed a valuable recruit in Highland Home native [autotag]Keldric Faulk[/autotag] during the 2023 recruiting cycle.  It appears that [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] and his staff are not finished recruiting players from the tiny town in South Alabama.

Auburn is now in the hunt for Faulk’s high school teammate, [autotag]CJ May[/autotag]. May is a four-star EDGE from the 2025 cycle, and is considered to be one of the state’s top players from the class. May revealed his top-10 schools on Monday, and included Auburn in the mix.

May considers the offer he received from Auburn in June to be meaningful.

“I received an offer from Auburn. It means a lot coming from the home state. It’s very hard to get those offers. Receiving an offer from my home state, it’s a blessed experience,” May said in an interview with Jason Caldwell of Auburn Undercover. “Me and coach (Jeremy) Garrett have a slight bond with him just coming here. The times we’ve met, we’ve always had a tight connection. That means a lot to me.”

May is a 6-4 EDGE, and is strongly considering programs such as Clemson, Georgia, Tennessee, and Ole Miss in addition to Auburn. He is the No. 13 player from the state of Alabama for the 2025 class according to 247Sports.

Keldrick Faulk is set to make an impact this season

It will be difficult for defensive coordinator Ron Roberts to keep the true freshman off the field this fall.

After the departure of [autotag]Derick Hall[/autotag] and [autotag]Colby Wooden[/autotag] to the NFL, Hugh Freeze knew that he needed to bring in experienced players from the transfer portal to fill those roles.

He did so by snagging [autotag]Elijah McAllister[/autotag], [autotag]Stephen Sings[/autotag], and [autotag]Jalen McLeod[/autotag]. There is zero doubt that their combined experience will be beneficial to the defense, but there is a true freshman in the mix that is poised to be a valuable player for the unit.

Freshman [autotag]Keldric Faulk[/autotag] almost went another direction with his recruitment, as he flipped to Auburn just before signing day. Since then, he has proven to be worthy of the flip. He has worked just as hard in the field as he has in the weight room, and it has caused defensive coordinator Ron Roberts to place him in a new spot.

“He played Jack most of the spring. A lot of our four-down stuff, it’s the same thing,” Roberts said. “So he was doing it half the dag-gum time, so we moved him to end. He’s 290 pounds by the summertime, so he’s kind of filled that spot. He’s in there fighting for the job. I don’t know how it’s going to pan out the next couple of weeks, but he’s going to be an impact player for us this season.”

That says plenty about what kind of player Faulk can be. Sure, the Tigers’ depth chart is filled with plenty of transfers, but Faulk’s quick development could be a great sign of what is to come from the coaching staff.

Four-star LB JaKaleb Faulk sets commitment date

The brother of Auburn’s top 2023 signee, Keldric Faulk, is considering Auburn.

Auburn was able to flip four-star defensive end [autotag]Keldric Faulk[/autotag] from Florida State in the 11th hour of the 2023 cycle thanks to an extra push from [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag].

This time around, they hope to land his brother in a more timely manner.

Four-star linebacker [autotag]JaKaleb Faulk[/autotag], younger brother of Keldric, visited Auburn for Big Cat Weekend and is closing in on making his college decision. He tells Caleb Jones of Auburn Rivals that he will be committing on Monday, Aug. 21. Alongside Auburn, Faulk is considering Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Clemson.

Family is important to Faulk, and he wants to play in a program that exhibits that type of atmosphere.

“I’m looking for people that want to bond with you,” Faulk said in an interview with Rivals. “People that’s really about family. People that want to support you every day and the people that want to make you a better person off the field and a better player on the field.”

Did Auburn check those boxes over the weekend?

“The way Coach Freeze jumped in the pool and all (after Perry Thompson’s commitment),” Faulk said. “The way he bonded with the new commits, the way he talked to them, it was just a little different. It just had a different feeling today.”

Faulk is the No. 12 EDGE from the 2025 class and is the No. 11 overall prospect from the state of Alabama. According to 247Sports, Auburn is the frontrunner at the moment with two crystal ball predictions. On3 has given Auburn a slight edge with a 25.4% chance to land him, with Florida and Clemson in the shadows.
