UFC 309 medical suspensions: Stipe Miocic out for 60 days, several others up to three months

From one week to three months, check out the full list of medical suspensions handed out following UFC 309 in New York.

Every fighter who competed this past Saturday at UFC 309 has been given a medical suspension following their bouts.

Jhonata Diniz, Mickey Gall and Bassil Hafez were knocked out in their fights and were among four fighters who received 90-day suspensions, which was the longest period issued. The fourth fighter who received 90 days was James Llontop, who went the distance with Mauricio Ruffy, but was on the receiving end of multiple damaging strikes over three rounds.

The event, which took place at Madison Square Garden in New York, was headlined by a heavyweight title fight between Jon Jones and former champion Stipe Miocic. Although he announced his retirement following the main event, Miocic was given a 60-day suspension for his TKO loss to Jones.

Wednesday, MMA Junkie acquired a full list of medical suspensions from the New York State Department of State, which oversaw the event. Check out the full list below. The suspensions ranged from a 7-day mandatory rest period to 90 days. Any fighter given 30-90 days may return sooner if cleared by a doctor (unless noted otherwise).

Jon Jones’ $42,000 led the Promotional Guidelines Compliance payouts for UFC 309 in New York.

NEW YORK – Fighters from Saturday’s UFC 309 event took home UFC Promotional Guidelines Compliance pay totaling $262,500.

The program, a comprehensive plan that includes outfitting requirements, media obligations and other items under the fighter code of conduct, replaces the previous payments made under the UFC Athlete Outfitting Policy.

UFC 309 took place at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan. The main card aired on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPNews and ESPN+.

Under the UFC Promotional Guidelines Compliance program’s payout tiers, which appropriate the money generated by Venum’s multi-year sponsorship with the UFC, fighters are paid based on their total number of UFC bouts, as well as Zuffa-era WEC fights (January 2007 and later) and Zuffa-era Strikeforce bouts (April 2011 and later). Fighters with 1-3 bouts receive $4,000 per appearance; 4-5 bouts get $4,500; 6-10 bouts get $6,000; 11-15 bouts earn $11,000; 16-20 bouts pocket $16,000; and 21 bouts and more get $21,000. Additionally, champions earn $42,000 while title challengers get $32,000.

In addition to experience-based pay, UFC fighters will receive in perpetuity royalty payments amounting to 20-30 percent of any UFC merchandise sold that bears their likeness, according to officials.

Karine Silva thinks win over Viviane Araujo at UFC 309 could make her next flyweight title challenger

Karine Silva has a theory about her fight Saturday, provided the outcome is the one she’s expecting.

NEW YORK – [autotag]Karine Silva[/autotag] has a theory about her fight Saturday, provided the outcome is the one she’s expecting.

Once Silva (18-4 MMA, 4-0 UFC) has her hand raised against fellow Brazilian Viviane Araujo (12-6 MMA, 6-5 UFC), she surmises, she’ll be installed as the proverbial next big thing in the women’s flyweight division. And that, she thinks, will leave the UFC no choice but to give her a title shot.

And part of that is because she said she has a hard time getting anyone else to take a fight with her.

“Obviously my focus is on Saturday, but I’ve looked at (the title picture) and the biggest difficulty, even though we’re not thinking that far ahead, is getting girls to accept fights,” Silva said. “That’s one of the difficulties we have: Who’s going to take the fight against me?”

Saturday, that is Araujo, who has dropped three of her past four fights. The women meet on the pay-per-view main card Saturday at UFC 309 (pay-per-view, ESPNews/Hulu/FX, ESPN+) at Madison Square Garden in New York.

And though Araujo may not have the same kind of stellar recent run as Silva, who comes in with nine straight wins, all by stoppage, the 30-year-old Silva said there’s no overlooking her.

“She’s a tough fighter, obviously – No. 9 in the ranking does her justice for everything that she’s done. But it’s my turn now. I think I’ve built a lot throughout camp, and on Saturday it’s my turn to grab that victory.”

UFC 309 adds Karine Silva vs. Viviane Arajuo to New York lineup

A women’s flyweight contender fight is the newest addition to UFC 309.

A women’s flyweight fight with top-10 implications is on the docket for Madison Square Garden.

[autotag]Karine Silva[/autotag] and [autotag]Viviane Araujo[/autotag] will collide Nov. 16 at UFC 309 in New York.

Two people with knowledge of the matchup recently informed MMA Junkie of the matchup but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

Silva (18-4 MMA, 4-0 UFC) has shot up the UFC women’s flyweight ladder since her promotional debut in 2022. Thus far, she holds wins over Poliana Botelho, Ketlen Souza, Maryna Moroz, and most recently Ariane Lipski.

Araujo (12-6 MMA, 6-5 UFC) has positioned herself as a ranked fighter in the promotion. She looks to bounce back from a unanimous decision loss to Natalia Silva in February. The defeat was his third in four fights.

With the addition, the UFC 309 lineup now includes:

Filling out the main card is a women’s flyweight fight between Silva and da Silva.

Silva, who has been red-hot since coming off of Dana White’s Contender Series, is showing serious promise and potential at 125 pounds. That said, I wouldn’t be too quick to discount da Silva in this spot.

Not only is da Silva (formerly Lipski) the more experienced UFC product, but “The Queen” (formerly “The Queen of Violence”) has really been coming into her own since shifting her training situation stateside.

Even though a da Silva decision wouldn’t surprise me, I’ve also been very impressed with Silva’s diverse game and can see why the hype is so high.

Submissions may be how Silva has been making her money in the octagon thus far, but I see her left hook and leg kicks being particularly live against da Silva standing.

The pick is Silva by first-round knockout.

Despite the oddsmakers opening the former KSW champion as the favorite, public money has come in on the Contender Series graduate, listing Silva (-158) and da Silva (+128) via FanDuel.

Karine Silva explains how fast UFC rise was actually deceivingly long

Ahead of UFC on ESPN 55, Karine Silva says her rise hasn’t been quick, though she plans to continue her trajectory vs. Ariane Lipski.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Karine Silva[/autotag] has heard the praise.

Even though the narratives are largely complementary, Silva (17-3 MMA, 3-0 UFC) admits her run toward UFC notoriety isn’t as quick and effortless as it may seem.

“It wasn’t quick, guys. It wasn’t fast,” Silva told MMA Junkie and other reporters at a UFC on ESPN 55 pre-fight news conference. “It was actually the work of 12 years. When I say ‘our’ work, what I mean by ‘our,’ is our team. It’s the people. We have taken one day at a time, but it’s taken a long time. It was not quick.”

Since a UFC ticket-punching performance on Dana White’s Contender Series in 2021, Silva has defeated Poliana Botelho, Ketlen Souza, and Maryna Moroz with first-round submissions. The results of a decade-plus of hard work have felt rewarding.

“It’s been wonderful,” Silva said. “The only thing that’s changed has been the frequency of training has increased. The intensity of training has increased. The routine changed but my life has been the same.”

At Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 55 (ESPN, ESPN+) at the UFC Apex, Silva battles seasoned veteran Ariane Lipski (17-8 MMA, 6-5 UFC), who is on a three-fight winning streak. Nicknamed “The Queen of Violence,” Lipski has finishing abilities herself. Regardless, Silva is confident Lipski won’t hinder her trajectory.

“I think the fight is going to happen the way it’s going to happen whether it’s going to be in the first, second, or third round,” Silva said. “What I believe in is my win.”
