Kansas at West Virginia odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Kansas at West Virginia odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The No. 3 Kansas Jayhawks (13-1, 2-0 Big 12) will take on the West Virginia Mountaineers (10-4, 0-2) in Morgantown Saturday at 6 p.m. ET (Big 12 Network). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Kansas vs. West Virginia odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

After slipping past Texas Tech 75-72 Tuesday as a 1-point favorite, Kansas will play its 2nd straight road tilt as it attempts to stay perfect in conference play and improve to an identical 3-0 on the road.

F Jalen Wilson (team-high 20.6 points per game) leads the attack for the Jayhawks as coach Bill Self will attempt to beat WVU coach Bob Huggins in this meeting between the 2 most tenured coaches in the conference.

Behind G Erik Stevenson (team-high 14.1 PPG), West Virginia will look to earn its 1st conference win of the season after losing its last outing 67-60 at Oklahoma State Monday as 3-point underdogs. Although the Mountaineers are 1-3 on the road, they are a perfect 7-0 at home.

Kansas at West Virginia picks and predictions

Prediction

Kansas 77, West Virginia 73

Moneyline

A wager of Kansas (-120) is acceptable in this tilt, but with the spread only being 1.5 points, this bet is not a needed safety net.

Although the Mountaineers are 7-0 at home, the Jayhawks come in after winning its first 2 conference games. Coach Self will have the Jayhawks ready and the safety of the moneyline is not needed.

Against the spread

BACK KANSAS -1.5 (-110).

Kansas is 5-2 ATS in its last 7 games, while West Virginia is 0-4 ATS it its last 4, which included the Mountaineers’ first 2 Big 12 contests of the season. Another cover for Kansas and failure by West Virginia is the way to go.

Over/Under

OVER 145.5 (-110) is the play.

West Virginia is 14-3 to the Over in its last 17 games after an ATS loss. The Mountaineers have also gone Over in 4 of their last 5 home games against a team with a winning record. Both numbers serve us well in choosing OVER 145.5 in this one.

In Kansas’ last 6 Saturday games, the Over is 5-1. Kansas is also 4-1 to the Over following an ATS victory in its previous game. This number is too low and I will take the value offered.

Kansas at West Virginia: Three things to know

  1. The Jayhawks won their last game vs. Kansas State 74-51 but have struggled on the road recently. Kansas has lost four in a row (3-1 ATS) as the visitor, including a 19-point loss to No. 10 Tennessee last Saturday.
  2. West Virginia beat Iowa State 76-72 the last time out and is 3-1 overall (2-2 ATS) following a 14-day layoff because of COVID-19 issues. Mountaineers junior F Derek Culver leads West Virginia in player efficiency rating, and he leads the Big XII in rebounds per game.
  3. Kansas beat the brakes off of West Virginia 79-65 earlier this season as a 2-point home favorite. The Jayhawks have dominated the Mountaineers since they joined the Big 12 in 2012, winning five in a row and nine of their last 10 meetings (7-3 ATS).

Against the spread (ATS)

Neither the market nor BetMGM is being heavily influenced by the first Kansas-West Virginia result. You can tell because the Jayhawks crushed the Mountaineers while laying only 2 points; however, WVU was actually leading at halftime of that game before it got out of hand in the second half.

WVU has been steamed up from a 1.5-point favorite on the opener to the current price. If the bookmakers and/or the market thought these teams weren’t evenly matched then Kansas would be favored on the road.

Also, aside from consecutive wins over Texas Tech and WVU in mid-December, Kansas has gotten punched in the mouth when it has stepped up in competition.

The Jayhawks’ last four losses have come against ranked competition on the road and the only cover was against No. 2 Baylor. Kansas covered by only a half-point by scoring seven points in the final 63 seconds to sneak in the backdoor.

TAKE WEST VIRGINIA -2.5 (-110) for 1 unit.

Over/Under (O/U)

lean UNDER 141.5 (-110) for a half-unit because Kansas was lights out from three in the first game between these two and I think the Jayhawks’ 3-point shooting will regress back to their regular-season average in the second game.

Plus, since the beginning of last season, West Virginia is 8-13-1 O/U as a home favorite.
