Kansas vs Baylor Game Preview

Why Kansas Will Win

The Jayhawks are able to keep on going.

The defense is the defense. There was a great performance in the loss to Iowa State, but the inability to close down most passing games is part of the deal with the offense able to roll up yards in bunches, even without QB Jalon Daniels.

Yes, Kansas lost to TCU and at Oklahoma, but think of it this way … Kansas lost to an unbeaten TCU in a fight and on the road to a desperate Oklahoma team that got its starting quarterback back.

The passing game has thrown four touchdown passes in three of the last four games, the O is still among the best in the nation on third downs, and the team will make Baylor press.

But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Baylor Will Win

Baylor is more than happy to throw it around to keep up.

It would rather rely on its defense and get the good running game going to control the clock and tempo, but QB Blake Shapen has been great with the passing attack throwing for 766 yards over the last two games.

Granted, Baylor lost to Oklahoma State and West Virginia, but yeah, the offense can keep up.

And it might not have to push the offense too hard. The Kansas defense gives up first downs and third down conversions in bunches, and at home the Baylor O should be balanced enough to throw well and average five yards per carry. The run defense will hold up fine and …

What’s Going To Happen

Baylor’s secondary won’t get gouged.

Kansas will get the O going. It’ll be its normal balanced self, but a few turnovers will matter and there will be just enough stalls to give Baylor the opportunity to push through.

It’s Kansas. It’ll be another fun offensive show, and for the third week in a row the other side will do a bit more.

Kansas vs Baylor Game Preview

Why Kansas Will Win

Kansas whacked around Baylor the first time around in early February, and why? Three reasons …

Rebounding, rebounding, rebounding.

The Jayhawks won 83-59 because it shot well, got a whole lot of second chance points, and the defense held the Bears to under 30% from the field.

And they were +10 in rebounding margin. Baylor is No. 1 in the Big 12 in rebounds, but Kansas was able to attack hard in the first game and there weren’t any answers. Baylor came up with a bunch of offensive rebounds, but that didn’t matter as much as it should’ve.

Baylor will shoot far better this time around, but there’s a problem if the threes aren’t falling. It couldn’t do a thing in the win over TCU – hitting just 2-of-11 – and it failed to get to 35% from three in five of the last six games.

But …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Baylor Will Win

Baylor continues to be great on the offensive glass.

No, there was no getting past the cold shooting day against Kansas in the first game, but the 15 offensive boards were a lot. The Bears won’t get that many again – mainly because they’ll shoot better – but they’ll have their share.

Kansas is too erratic from the outside. It can certainly win if it’s not cranking up things from three, but it’s been able to get away with bad shooting games. That’s not going to work against the Bears.

Baylor can score in spurts, it moves the ball around as well as anyone in the Big 12, and …

What’s Going To Happen

This should be fantastic.

Texas Tech is right there, but these are two of the best three teams in the Big 12 and they’re going to go back and forth.

Baylor isn’t unbeatable at home – it lost back in mid-January to Texas Tech and Oklahoma State – but Kansas is only beatable away from Lawrence.

It’ll be an offensive up-and-down game with the Bears doing a wee bit better on the move late. Their passing ability will come up big when needed.

Baylor (2-0) vs Kansas (1-1) Game Preview

Why Baylor Will Win

Baylor seems like it’s just a few more at-bats away from figuring it all out.

Second year head coach Dave Aranda is getting the defense working – even if the competition hasn’t exactly been stiff so far – and there’s experience talent at the skill spots to work around.

And there’s speed. That should be enough against the Jayhawks.

Kansas has had a rough time getting the defense off the field, and it’s having a harder time keeping teams from blocking kicks – three in the first two games.

There’s not enough pressure coming from the defensive front, and the offensive line isn’t doing much in pass protection. If Baylor gets up early and then gets to rely on the defense, there won’t be any problems. The O hasn’t been turning it over enough to worry.

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Kansas Will Win

Don’t get all fired up over Baylor rolling through Texas Southern 66-7.

This is still a team that needed way too much work to get by Texas State to start the season, it’s still in a bit of a transition overall, and as weird as it sounds, Kansas is a step up in competition.

The Jayhawks are going to need a while, but they’ve started to find a few things that work.

Struggling against South Dakota wasn’t awe-inspiring, but the passing game wasn’t bad in the loss to Coastal Carolina, North Texas transfer QB Jason Bean appears to be a guy to work around for the next few years, and there’s at least some big play potential to the running game now.

Not a lot, but some. That’s a start.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Kansas is going to give Baylor a far tougher time than it might like.

There will be a third quarter offensive spurt from the Bears to take over, but after rolling for over 700 yards last week, the BU offense will sputter a bit for far too long.

Kansas, though, won’t have the offense to take advantage of the several opportunities to make this a battle, and then the floodgates will open.

Kansas (0-1) vs Baylor (0-0) Game Preview

Why Kansas Will Win

Kansas was outclassed and outplayed in the 38-23 loss to Coastal Carolina, but the passing game wasn’t bad, the rushing attack averaged close to five yards per carry, and the offense woke up in the second half.

There’s no excuse for the Big 12 team to lose at home to the Sun Belt squad – and for the second year in a row – but this looked like a Jayhawk team that could use some seasoning. It started to work as the game wore on, but the 28-3 deficit was way too much to overcome.

Meanwhile, Baylor has had a rough time getting the season going with postponement after postponement. Under the new coaching staff, the pass protection has to be a whole lot better, the defense has to fill in plenty of gaps, and it has to be sharp if the Kansas offense that improved late two weeks ago is good from the start.

Why Baylor Will Win

Kansas couldn’t handle the quickness of Coastal Carolina.

For all of the other issues the Jayhawks had in the opening game loss, the biggest one was on the lines. The Chanticleers came up with five sacks and 12 tackles for loss, and KU generated a grand total of zero sacks and just two tackles for loss.

Baylor’s offensive line was hardly a rock last season, but it gets back four starters and should be a whole lot stronger as the season goes on.

This isn’t the team of 2019 that came within a few plays of going off to the College Football Playoff, but enough parts are back – starting with QB Charlie Brewer – to be fine right away despite the lack of an opening game.

What’s Going To Happen

2007. That was the last time Kansas was able to beat Baylor.

Not only have the Jayhawks had problems with the Bears over the last several years, they’ve been obliterated.

How bad has this series been? Baylor has won ten in a row, and in nine of those wins, Kansas failed to score more than 14 points. Over the last five years the Jayhawks failed to score double digit points.

Baylor has outscored Kansas by an average of around 49-11 over the last ten years, including a 61-6 blasting last year.

The Bears haven’t played yet, but they’ll be just fine.

Kansas (23-3) vs. Baylor (24-1) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Kansas Will Win

On an 11-game winning streak since the 67-55 loss at home to Baylor back in mid-January, The Jayhawks have been getting better and better as the year has gone on. The offense has turned it up a few notches, the ball movement has been terrific, and at least lately, the threes are falling.

How do you get by the Bears? It’s a must to own the boards and it’s a must to generate as may easy points as possible – second-chance points would be nice. KU leads the Big 12 in shooting, and it leads the conference in field goal percentage defense, but it’s going to be a grind.

Kansas has to beat Baylor a bit at its own game. Own the inside, crank up the defensive intensity, and come up with just enough takeaways to generate easy points. Basically, come up with the stop that Baylor doesn’t.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Baylor Will Win

How did Baylor do it the first time around? It got hot early and the defense choked the Jayhawks from there. This isn’t a big-time team from three, but it hit from the outside, Kansas didn’t, and the turnovers weren’t there to allow the game to tilt back.

BU leads the Big 12 in turnover margin – it only gave it away five times to KU’s 14 in the first meeting – and it’s not going to beat itself. The Jayhawks are great defensively, but they’re not about forcing mistakes. They block a ton of shots and they get ultra-aggressive, but they’re not going to take the ball away from this ultra-careful Bear team.

In what should be a tight battle, free throws will matter. Baylor is bad on the line, but Kansas is a whole lot worse.

What’s Going To Happen

Baylor will do a few more of the little things right. It’ll come up with just enough offensive rebounds to keep Kansas from owning the advantage on the boards too much, and it’ll come up with a few more takeaways.

It won’t jump out to a big halftime lead like it did the first time around, but it’ll come through at home late in a whale of a battle.

It may be early in Big 12 conference play, but Saturday’s matchup between the No. 4 Baylor Bears and No. 3 Kansas Jayhawks is as important a matchup as it gets this season. Baylor barely remembers what it is like to face the feeling of defeat, last losing to Washington on Nov. 8, which marks its only loss so far this season. The Bears (12-1, 2-0) are coming off an impressive 57-52 win over No. 22 Texas Tech on Tuesday. The team was led by guard Davion Mitchell, who had a team-high 14 points. All eight players who played in the game scored at least one bucket. The Bears are 4-0 against ranked opponents this season.

The Jayhawks have picked themselves up after a tight 56-55 loss to No. 16 Villanova on Dec. 21. Since then, Kansas (12-2, 2-0) has won three straight games, including a 60-53 win over No. 17 West Virginia last Saturday at home. Kansas destroyed Iowa State 79-53 on Wednesday for its second conference win, outscoring the Cyclones by 20 points in the first half. Devon Dotson had a team-high 20 points, while Ochai Agbaji and David McCormack each scored 16 points. The Jayhawks are 3-2 against ranked opponents this season.
