Kansas State is coming off a Saturday home loss to Kansas. The Wildcats gave the Jayhawks a game — they lost by just three points (78-75). The Big 12’s lowest-scoring team (68.6 points per game) has scored just 64.9 PPG over their last 7 games.

The Bears rank second in the league in scoring (78.9 PPG). Baylor is back at home where it has lost its last two games (Jan. 11–Texas Tech, Jan. 15–Oklahoma State).

The nation’s former No. 1 team (Dec. 13-Jan. 16) has trailed off a bit lately in its ability to grab offensive rebounds and get to the free-throw line, two crucial parts of winning games at the collegiate level.

The Bears are 5-1 ATS in their last six home games against teams with winning road records.

Baylor allowed just 51 points in a Saturday win over Oklahoma. In games following sub-60 defensive performances, Baylor is 6-1 ATS this season and 25-7 over the last three years.

Look for BU to maybe struggle from 3-point range against a good perimeter defense. But the Bears sport a diverse offense, and they figure to gain a three-possession lead just from their advantage in turnovers.

Look for a young KSU squad to show some fatigue in coming off their solid effort against the Jayhawks.

TAKE BAYLOR -13.5 (-120).

Over/Under

These Big 12 foes play on the slow side of the tempo meter. Both are trending toward games with even fewer possessions, and 3s may not figure prominently in the final box.

With a small margin, consider a partial-unit play on the UNDER 136.5 (-108).

  1. Baylor routed Kansas State 100-69 in their first meeting of the season Dec. 19, 2020. The Bears led 56-27 at the half and never looked back, covering the spread as 16-point road favorites. Senior G MaCio Teague and junior G Davion Mitchell scored 23 and 20 points, respectively, for the Bears.
  2. K-State enters on a 6-game slide (2-4 ATS), most recently dropping a 69-47 decision as an 11-point home underdog to current-No. 11 West Virginia Saturday. Two of the other losses in the streak were also to ranked teams – 82-71 at then-No. 19 Texas Tech Jan. 5 and 82-67 at then-No. 4 Texas Jan. 16. Each of the Wildcats’ last five losses has been by at least 11 points. Senior G Mike McGuirl leads three ‘Cats in double figures at 11.9 points per game.
  3. Baylor, one of four undefeated NCAA teams with at least 10 games played, is coming off an 81-66 victory as an 11.5-point favorite at Oklahoma State Saturday. The Bears have won their seven conference games by a league-best margin of 15.1 PPG. Junior G Jared Butler’s 17.1 PPG leads four Bears in double figures and has a team-best 2.3 steals per game.

Money line (ML)

There’s NO WAY anyone should bet a -10000 money line, which is Baylor’s ML price. It can be tossed into a parlay, but it doesn’t help the payoff enough to make it worthwhile. PASS.

Against the spread (ATS)

Despite a 4-11 ATS record, KANSAS STATE +23.5 (-110) is the play.

Only two of KSU’s 11 losses have been by 25 or more points, including the 31-point home blowout by Baylor back in December.

The Bears are 6-0 straight-up since Jan. 2, but they haven’t beaten an opponent by more than 18 points in that span. Baylor, which is 11-3 ATS, won’t have a problem with K-State, but a 24-point win is a big ask.

Plus, with Saturday’s SEC/Big 12 Challenge home showdown vs. Auburn – which beat No. 12 Missouri Tuesday – up next, expect Baylor head coach Scott Drew to rest some, if not all, of his starters late in the second half.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 135.5 (-110) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager. The Over is 7-1 in the last eight games of this head-to-head series.

With starters on the bench and the winner already decided, the final 5-10 minutes should turn into a run-and-gun affair with defense thrown out the window.

Kansas State at Baylor: Three things to know

  1. Kansas State took a 45-0 drubbing from Iowa State last week and was down 35-0 at halftime. Everyone who took the Wildcats getting 13.5 points was able to get on with their day a little earlier.
  2. Baylor had last week off but lost to Texas Tech 21-20 the week prior by a game-winning field goal as time expired. The Bears blew an 11-point lead heading into the fourth quarter and lost as 1-point favorites.
  3. Both programs have entered a new chapter recently as Baylor replaced former head coach Matt Rhule this season with Dave Aranda, and Kansas State is in its second season with coach Chris Klieman at the helm following a 27-season run by Bill Snyder. For what it’s worth, Baylor has won back-to-back meetings.

Baylor 21, Kansas State 19

Money line (ML)

Kansas State’s offense has gone into the witness protection program the past three weeks and Baylor is getting closer to winning—a single-point loss at Texas Tech last week and an ATS win in a straight up loss at Iowa State on Nov. 7.

Based on these prices, I’d rather bet against Baylor than on Kansas State. But, I am not in the market for either team’s money line in this spot. PASS.

Against the spread (ATS)

It’s weird Baylor is laying 5.5 points. I don’t see it. Kansas State has been a solid ATS team this year (5-3 ATS) and the underdog is 8-2 ATS in the last 10 Kansas State-Baylor games. Admittedly, BetMGM is more dialed into Big XII football and/or probably saw something I didn’t.

Since I’m on the Under (see below), I’ll default to the simple logic of taking an underdog with a low total and lean Kansas State +5.5 (-110) for a quarter-unit.

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 45.5 (-106) is the only play on the total. I’d like it a little more if we bet the Under before it was steamed up; the total opened at 47.5.

However, this is a quintessential pros versus joes in the total betting market: 86% of the money is on the Under, but 58% of the bets placed are on the Over.

You could make a case that both defenses are pretty good, but it’s a certainty that both offenses are terrible. Neither team can run the ball—Kansas State is 94th in yards per rush and Baylor is ranked 11th—and the weather forecast is saying rainy and windy conditions Saturday. That doesn’t bode well for the passing games, which are almost as bad as each team’s rushing attack.

My main concern is that maybe this seems too easy? The Under is 5-2 in the last 7 Kansas State-Baylor meetings. But, I’ll take my chances betting against these crappy offenses in bad weather.

GIMME UNDER 45.5 (-106) for 1 unit.
