Game 2: Kansas City Royals at St. Louis Cardinals odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Kansas City Royals at St. Louis Cardinals odds and lines, with MLB expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Kansas City Royals (49-43) take on the St. Louis Cardinals (48-42) Wednesday in the 2nd game of a doubleheader at Busch Stadium at 7:45 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s lines around the Royals vs. Cardinals odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

(Records, trends and stats do not include the 1st game of Wednesday’s doubleheader.)

Season series: First meeting; they tied 2-2 in 2023

This is a short 2-game series. Tuesday’s opener was rained out and rescheduled for Wednesday, setting up this doubleheader.

The Royals come into the I-70 series after dropping 2 of 3 in Coors Field to the Colorado Rockies. They left town with a 10-1 haymaker victory Sunday. They were favored in all 3 games and the finale was the only Over cash of the series. SS Bobby Witt Jr. went 3-for-5 with his 15th homer of the season in Sunday’s win. The All-Star is hitting .324 with 15 dingers, 61 RBIs and 22 steals. If the Royals remain in contention, he’s a darkhorse candidate for MVP. BetMGM Sportsbook has those odds at +2000 entering Wednesday’s action.

The Cardinals were scheduled to run their ace RHP Sonny Gray out in the nightcap, but he has been pushed back while the Cards go with rookie RHP Gordon Graceffo. The Cards took 3 of 4 from the Washington Nationals and return home for a 7-game homestand, which includes a 4-game set with a Saturday DH vs. the Chicago Cubs, before the All-Star break. St. Louis OF Lars Nootbaar returned from the DL Monday, and INF/OF Tommy Edman, a regular in the lineup who has been on the DL since the start of the season, is due back after the break.

Royals at Cardinals projected starters

RHP Michael Wacha vs. RHP Gordon Graceffo

Wacha (5-6, 3.74 ERA) makes his 16th start. He has a 1.22 WHIP, 2.8 BB/9 and 8.0 K/9 through 84 1/3 innings.

  • Last start: Win, 6 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 3 BB, 8 K in 4-2 home victory vs. Tampa Bay Rays
  • Career vs. Cardinals: 2-0, 2.19 ERA (12 /13 IP, 3 ER), 1.14 WHIP, 11 K in 2 starts

Graceffo (0-0, 2.08 ERA) makes his 1st major league start. He debuted June 29 in relief against the Cincinnati Reds — his lone MLB appearance — and worked 4 1/3 innings, yielding 1 run on 3 hits and 2 walks with 4 K’s.

  • 2024 at Triple-A Memphis: 8-5, 3.86 ERA (77 IP, 33 ER), 1.39 WHIP, 3.6 BB/9, 8.3 K/9 in 15 starts
  • Utilizes 4-seam fastball (94 mph), changeup, curveball and slider
  • Opponents have gone hitless against 12 curveballs he has thrown in the majors and are hitting .143 against 21 changeups

Royals at Cardinals picks and predictions

Prediction

Cardinals 4, Royals 3

Moneyline

This will be the 1st time the 2013 NLCS MVP toes the rubber at Busch Stadium since he left after the 2019 season. Wacha has been great in 2 starts against the Cards — once for the Boston Red Sox and once for the San Diego Padres — in his respective home ballpark the last 2 seasons.

I’m a little surprised to see the Cards favored in this one with the pitching matchup. I think they get it done once Wacha exits, though. The Royals bullpen ranks 2nd in MLB with a 4.37 ERA. The Cards can’t get swept in this doubleheader, and I think they’ll have some issues in the early game.

BET CARDINALS (-116).

Run line/Against the spread

I love MICHAEL WACHA OVER 4.5 K’S (-142). He has 5 or more strikeouts in 3 straight starts and 5+ in both of his career starts against St. Louis.

Book it.

Over/Under

It’s slated to be a humid, 82-degree evening with a slight 5-mph wind blowing out to right-center. With this being the nightcap of a doubleheader, I look for a lower-scoring game. The Over is 5-5 in the last 10 meetings between the teams. The Royals are 4-6 O/U in their last 10, and the Cards are 6-4.

LEAN UNDER 8.5 (-102).

Kansas City Royals at St. Louis Cardinals odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Monday’s Kansas City Royals at St. Louis Cardinals odds and lines, with MLB expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Kansas City Royals (16-38) and St. Louis Cardinals (24-31) meet in what is locally known as the Interstate 70 series Monday for the opener of a 2-game set at Busch Stadium. First pitch is at 2:15 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Royals vs. Cardinals odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: First meeting; St. Louis leads 8-2 over the last 2 seasons

The Royals beat the Washington Nationals 3-2 Sunday to pick up just their 2nd win in the last 9 games. They’re led by C Salvador Perez, who is hitting .282 with 12 homers and 32 RBIs at age 33. KC is just 8-17 on the road and 6-12 in interleague play.

The Cardinals coughed one up Sunday with a 4-3 defeat to the Cleveland Guardians. One of the Cardinals’ slew of problems is their bullpen, which is tied for 2nd-most in baseball with 11 blown saves. The Cards are 13-7 over the last 20 games as they have shown some life since their historically bad start to the season. They have beaten up their in-state rivals over the last few years, and there’s no reason that shouldn’t continue.

Royals at Cardinals projected starters

RHP Josh Staumont vs. RHP Adam Wainwright

Staumont (0-0, 4.76 ERA) makes his 1st start and 19th appearance. He has a 1.35 WHIP, 5.3 BB/9 and 11.1 K/9 in 17 innings.

  • Threw 15 pitches over 2/3 IP Sunday, which means he’s likely limited to 1 or 2 innings Monday
  • Throws a 97-mph sinker, 96-mph fastball, slider, curveball and split-finger fastball; opponents have the most success on his fastball but only at a .250 clip

Wainwright (2-0, 6.33 ERA) makes his 5th start. He has a 1.59 WHIP, 2.5 BB/9 and 4.2 K/9 in 21 1/3 innings.

  • Last start: Win, 5 2/3 IP, 5 ER, 8 H, 1 BB, 2 K vs. Cincinnati Reds Tuesday
  • Last 5 starts vs. KC: 3-1, 3.41 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 21 K in 31 2/3 IP

Royals at Cardinals picks and predictions

Prediction

Cardinals 7, Royals 5

Moneyline

Waino has allowed at least 4 runs in each of his last 5 starts, although only 2 were earned runs in one of those outings. His last 3 starts came in Great American Ball Park, where he has historically struggled, and against two mashing teams in the Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers. This should be a “get right” game for him as he searches for a groove after starting the year on the injured list.

I’m willing to spot the 26th-ranked KC offense 5 runs, but they allow the 3rd-most at 5.51 runs/9 and have the 3rd-worst bullpen ERA at 4.86. So there’s no reason St. Louis can’t score the 6 or 7 necessary to come out on top.

We’re not paying -210 on the Cardinals against anyone, though. Head to the Win/Total section and take CARDINALS AND OVER 5.5 TOTAL RUNS (-140).

Run line/Against the spread

The Royals are just 18-36 on the RL (11-14 on the road), and the Cards are 25-30 (10-16 at home). We’re projecting a multiple-run win for St. Louis here, but as mentioned, their bullpen is no bueno.

Let’s stick to the trends here, and if Wainwright has watched 4 runs cross the plate in each of his last 7 starts, let’s go to the Game Props section and take WILL BOTH TEAMS SCORE 3 OR MORE RUNS? YES (-150).

Play our free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Over/Under

It’s 84 degrees with a slight 5-mph breeze coming in from center field. The books have stacked the odds as if we’re in Coors Field because of Wainwright’s recent history and K.C. going with a bullpen game. We’re projecting more than 10 runs here, but it’s very possible one of the offenses just doesn’t show up. The Royals don’t score much, and the Cardinals’ bats disappear at times. So instead of playing the book’s hand, let’s look for some value elsewhere.

In the First 5 Innings section, there’s a prop bet with some value. WILL BOTH TEAMS SCORE 2 OR MORE RUNS IN THE FIRST 5 INNINGS? YES (+120).

It’s a little risky because Wainwright’s troubles generally come late in his starts, but the trends and the payout say it’s worth it.

Kansas City Royals at St. Louis Cardinals odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Monday’s Kansas City Royals at St. Louis Cardinals odds and lines, with MLB expert picks and predictions.

The Kansas City Royals (7-13) and St. Louis Cardinals (12-9) open an unusual 3-game series Monday with a 1:15 p.m. ET first pitch at Busch Stadium. Let’s analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Royals vs. Cardinals odds with MLB picks and predictions.

Season series: St. Louis leads 1-0.

Monday’s contest in St. Louis is a make-up date for an April 13 postponement. The Missouri foes then travel to Kansas City for a regularly scheduled 2-games series Tuesday and Wednesday

Kansas City heads east on I-70 after being swept 3-0 by the New York Yankees over the weekend. The Royals are just 2-8 over their last 10 games.

The Cardinals are coming off a 7-5 Sunday win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. The victory salvaged a split in a 4-game set against the Snakes. Monday’s matinee affair will mark the Redbirds’ seventh straight game at home. St. Louis is 6-5 across 11 games at Busch this season.

Royals at Cardinals projected starters

RHP Zack Greinke vs. LHP Steven Matz

Greinke (0-1, 2.86 ERA) makes his 5th start of the season. He has a 1.09 WHIP, 1.2 BB/9 and 2.5 K/9 through 22 IP.

  • Has held current St. Louis batters to a .667 OPS in past meetings.
  • Allowed 3 runs in 6 IP at the Chicago White Sox Wednesday in his last start after allowing just 4 runs over his first 3 starts.

Matz (2-1, 6.11 ERA) makes his fifth start. He has a 1.70 WHIP, 2.5 BB/9 and 11.7 K/9 through 17 2/3 IP.

  • Allowed 8 base runners and 4 R in 4 IP against the New York Mets Wednesday in his last outing.

Royals at Cardinals picks and predictions

Prediction

Cardinals 5, Royals 3

Money line

Ball-in-play figures largely point to Greinke being worse than his surface numbers so far and Matz being significantly better. Throw in the nature of this 1-game stop before the Royals and Cards head west to K.C., and pegging St. Louis as a 60-63% probability is reasonable.

Keep an eye on this line. We would want to get the Cardinals at -165 or better.

Run line/Against the spread

Kansas City owns a .594 OPS against southpaws. The Redbird relief corps — especially at the back end — figures to be a bit more manageable without running into fatigue in this spot.

The Cards are 5-2 in games decided by 5 runs or more.

TAKE ST. LOUIS -1.5 (+130).

Over/Under
