Against the spread

LEAN BAYLOR -1.5 (-115).

The Bears are riding a 4-game win streak, and the more impressive part is that 3 of those wins came on the road against Big 12 opponents. Like Kansas, Baylor lost at home against TCU (88-87 on Jan.4), but that is clearly a far more reasonable outcome than a 23-point thrashing.

The Feb. 5 setback marked the first of two this month for the Bears (Feb. 16 at Texas Tech). Baylor nearly lost a third February game Monday at Oklahoma State. BU overcame an iffy shooting performance to down the Cowboys, 66-64, in overtime.

A banged-up Baylor squad prefers playing opponents that rely more on the outside shot. Kansas makes its bones in and around the paint, and they have a match-up advantage in that area in this contest. The Jayhawks lost similar road games at Texas Tech (Jan. 8), at Kentucky (Jan. 29) and at Texas (Feb. 7). But the way Kansas played in that game at UT should give it confidence to hang close in this test in Waco.

  1. The Jayhawks haven’t played since Tuesday when they lost 75-70 at Oklahoma State. Kansas was undone by nine Cowboys threes in the game, and being dinged by distance shots is a trend of late for Kansas. Over its last four games, Kansas opponents are shooting 40.7% from beyond the arc. That four-game stretch includes two losses.
  2. Baylor’s impressive start to the season has included the Bears averaging 87.3 points per game (sixth NCAA-I). It has also included — up until their last game (Saturday at Texas Tech) — the Bears earning double-digit wins over every opponent. Saturday, BU beat TTU 68-60. BU fares well both inside and outside and in getting points off turnovers and offensive rebounds.
  3.  A versatile Baylor attack features seven players averaging more than 5.5 PPG. Junior G Jared Butler notched a season-high 28 points two games back and is the Bears leading scorer at 15.6 PPG.

With a deep squad that plays at a top-5 analytics level at both ends of the floor, and against a Jayhawks team that may be significantly overrated, BAYLOR -455 HAS DECENT VALUE.

Against the spread (ATS)

The Bears are 10-2 ATS, and the line here indicates bettors still haven’t caught up. Only a season-worst performance in both shooting and rebounding in its last game halted what was an impressive string of double-digit routs.

Look for head coach Scott Drew to have his team’s full attention after an awful seven-minute stretch in the second half of that eventual win over Texas Tech.
