Breaking down Oregon’s new-look secondary ahead of the 2024 season

A deep dive into the Oregon Ducks secondary entering the 2024 season, which features several new faces ready to have an instant-impact.

We usually wait until later in the year to dive deep into a position group and preview how things are shaping up for the Oregon Ducks going into the season, but when looking at the secondary that is being put together in Eugene, we simply couldn’t wait.

On Saturday afternoon, the Ducks landed a commitment from former Washington Huskies’ cornerback Jabbar Muhammad, adding yet another proven veteran playmaker with an incredibly high upside to a defense that returns a majority of starters from last season.

The Ducks have also added guys like Kam Alexander, Brandon Johnson, and Kobe Savage to the secondary, all of whom project to be instant-impact players.

To keep track of all of the movement, and offer an idea of what the Ducks’ starting secondary players and depth pieces will look like, let’s break down all of the names that you need to know and project how they will impact the team in 2024.

Where CB Kam Alexander stands among the top-rated transfers in Dan Lanning era

A look at where Oregon Ducks’ new cornerback transfer Kam Alexander ranks among the top-rated transfers to come to Oregon under Dan Lanning.

As the offseason rolls on, Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks continue to work their magic in the transfer portal to put together a roster for the 2024 season.

While much of the roster building has consisted of stars from 2023 announcing they will return, the Ducks picked up a new addition on Monday. Former UTSA cornerback Kam Alexander announced his transfer to Oregon after an official visit in Eugene over the weekend.

Alexander is a sixth-year senior who will come in and compete for a starting spot right away. He could be one of the bigger instant-impact players on the defense. He was one of the top-graded CBs in the nation a year ago, according to Pro Football Focus, and he has a high upside in Eugene.

So where does he rank among the 28 (non-specialist) Oregon transfers in the Lanning era? There are two ways to look at it. For starters, you can take into account the 247Sports transfer portal rankings. However, those rankings don’t always hold match what we see play out on the field. For instance, Bo Nix was a three-star prospect in the portal, but he finished his college career as a Heisman Trophy finalist in New York.

For good measure, I added my own rankings based on how good each player ended up being in Eugene.

Let’s take a look at the best transfers that the Ducks have landed since Lanning has been here, and see where Alexander lands:

5 things to know about Oregon’s new cornerback Kam Alexander

Get to know the Oregon Ducks’ newest transfer portal addition, former UTSA CB Kam Alexander.

All football teams have depth. But it’s the quality of depth that separates the good teams from the great ones.

When Dan Lanning was hired, one of his main objectives at Oregon was to improve the quality of depth on the roster and after two seasons, he has succeeded.

His success continues with the Ducks landing former UT-San Antonio corner Kameryn Alexander. He’ll be a graduate senior for Oregon in 2024 and will have one year of eligibility remaining.

Oregon’s defense just improved. Alexander is a cover corner and he’ll help a young defensive back room with his knowledge and experience. Alexander also brings a bit of talent as well and will fight for a starting spot at one of the corner positions.

Here are five things to know about Oregon’s new corner:

Oregon Ducks get commitment from former UTSA CB Kam Alexander

Ducks Wire confirmed that Alexander was in Eugene for a visit over the weekend, and obviously it went well enough for him to make a quick decision and join the team.

Alexander played a single season at UTSA after transferring from Sam Houston. At UTSA, he racked up 34 tackles, 2 TFL, 1 sack, 2 INTs, and 15 PBUs in 13 games. He entered the transfer portal in late December and has been taking a handful of visits since then.

Alexander has one year of eligibility remaining thanks to a redshirt season in 2022.

The Ducks lost starting CB Khyree Jackson to the NFL Draft this offseason, so they are looking at potential replacements in the transfer portal to add to an already talented group of young defensive backs on the roster.

Florida hosting UTSA transfer CB on official visit

Florida is loading up the visitors list for the first weekend of 2024. The latest name expected in Gainesville is UTSA cornerback Kam Alexander.

One of the many transfer portal players Florida will host over the first weekend of 2024 is former UTSA cornerback [autotag]Kam Alexander[/autotag], according to Swamp247.

Alexander, who was named to the AAC all-conference team and as the defensive MVP of the Frisco Bowl, will be in town on Jan. 5. Florida’s new secondary coach, Will Harris, is looking to reload through the portal, and Alexander has already secured an offer.

Washington is also in on Alexander, so Florida will have to convince him that Gainesville presents a better opportunity than a College Football Playoff team does.

Alexander started his college career at Sam Houston, appearing in 32 games for the Bearkats before transferring to UTSA. In his lone year with the Roadrunners, he led the team with 15 pass breakups and two interceptions.

Pro Football Focus gave Alexander a defensive rating of 81.4 in 2023. He excelled in coverage, earning an 83.1 grade in that category. He’d be a welcomed addition to a Florida secondary that struggled to contain offense last season and forced just two interceptions all season.
