What Washington head coach Kalen DeBoer said about losing championship to Michigan

Hard not to give props after that game! #GoBlue

HOUSTON — Through all the drama and through all the adversity, no one believed Michigan football would win a national championship.

For weeks, analysts and pundits picked the maize and blue to lose — to Penn State, to Ohio State and even to Iowa. To Alabama and to Washington — the maize and blue were doubted all along the way.

Much of the same could be said of Washington, a team that was an underdog to Oregon twice. It wasn’t expected to beat Texas. But when it matched up with the Wolverines, many expected a Huskies win.

After Michigan beat Washington, 34-13, a dejected head coach Kalen DeBoer, Edefuan Ulofoshio and Michael Penix Jr. met with the media to discuss the game. Here is everything they said in the postgame when it pertained more specifically to Michigan football.

College Football National Championship: Staff Picks for Title Game

Who brings home the title on Monday night?

College football puts a bow on the 2023 season Monday night when No. 1 Michigan takes on No. 2 Washington in the national championship game.  It’s been a season that won’t soon be forgotten seeing as the team with the literal No. 1 next to their name saw their head coach suspended for half of the regular season.

But who wins on Monday night?

Does Jim Harbaugh win and take his national championship to the NFL?

Or does Washington, who is in just their second year under head coach Kalen DeBoer, take home the crown?

Here is what the Fighting Irish Wire crew sees happening Monday night between a couple of soon-to-be Big Ten rivals.

Everything Jim Harbaugh and Kalen DeBoer said in national championship press conference

ONE. MORE. DAY. #GoBlue

HOUSTON — For the final time before the national championship game on Monday, both head coaches from the opposing teams took to the podium to answer questions about the matchup. The next time each takes center stage it will be to discuss why their team either won or lost.

Michigan football head coach Jim Harbaugh appeared to be the center of attention of the national media on Sunday morning, fielding questions about his future, how the team prepares the night before a big game, and much more. Washington’s Kalen DeBoer spoke about the matchup including Michigan’s run game, and what makes Harbaugh’s team so tough to play.

Here’s everything they said.

Kalen DeBoer, like Mario Cristobal, fails to take a knee at the end of a game

Do these coaches never learn?

The backlash is certainly coming for Kalen DeBoer, even after the Washington Huskies defeated the Texas Longhorns to advance to the national title game for the 2023 college football season.

His failure to take a knee caused Dillon Johnson to get injured. It also enabled Texas to get the ball back with nearly 45 seconds left instead of only 10 to 15 seconds. That difference in time allowed Texas to nearly pull off a miracle comeback.

Ultimately, Quinn Ewers’ pass as time expired was knocked away incomplete, but DeBoer’s questionable decision was Mario Cristobal-esque in nature.

With time ticking down just inside of one minute and Texas having no timeouts, Washington could have knelt and guaranteed a 40-second runoff after the end of the play. That 40-second runoff, plus four or five seconds to run the third-down play and then five more seconds to execute a punt, would have left Texas with no more than 15 seconds, maybe only 10, and nearly the whole field to go in a game Washington led 37-31.

Instead of taking a knee on third down, however, DeBoer ran a normal running play, and Johnson proceeded to get injured and leave the game. The clock stopped for the injury without a restart. Texas gained over 30 extra seconds because the normal play put an injury in play as a real possibility. Kneeling the ball would have taken the possibility of an injury off the board.

It was a questionable decision, and it will be even more discussed if Johnson isn’t able to play in the title game for Washington against Michigan next Monday.

Cristobal did the same thing against Georgia Tech earlier this season in one of the most puzzling meltdowns in the history of college football, and then he had another episode of mismanagement in the Pinstripe Bowl. Cristobal also infamously failed to kneel the ball late in an Oregon loss to Stanford several years ago. An Oregon fumble on a handoff opened the door for Stanford to make a late comeback in Eugene.

Aggies Hot Board 2.0: Five Texas A&M head coach candidates to replace Jimbo Fisher

Here are five new head coaching candidates to take over at Texas A&M after the recent firing of now-former head coach Jimbo Fisher.

Texas A&M fired head coach Jimbo Fisher on Nov. 12. Fisher finished 45-25 record, including a dismal 27-21 SEC record, in slightly less than six full seasons. In a shock to many, TexAgs’ Billy Liucci reported the move last Sunday, three days after the Board of Regents met.

Elijah Robinson is off to a good start in the interim role thanks to the Aggies’ 38-10 win over Abilene Christian on Saturday afternoon. The long-time veteran assistant received the game ball after the win in the last home game of the season. Senior wide receiver Ainias Smith noted:

“I’m so proud of Coach E, so happy for him, so glad that he’s getting the things that he’s getting. I’m so glad that we got the win for him.”

“He has been doing a real good job, an amazing job. … The seniors got to present him with the game ball today. That was cool.”

While Robinson remains a candidate for the position, Texas A&M athletic director Ross Bjork is reportedly interviewing many candidates. Only a few names, including UTSA head coach Jeff Traylor, have been released to the public.

Heading the list of more realistic options, here are five Texas A&M head coach candidates to replace Fisher.

Several coaches address Texas A&M opening

See what several prominent Power 5 coaches had to say when asked about Texas A&M’s current HC opening after Jimbo Fisher’s dismissal

On Sunday, Nov. 12, Texas A&M  fired head coach Jimbo Fisher after six seasons in College Station, finishing with a 45-25 record, including a notably underwhelming 27-21 SEC record. Breaking the news before anyone else, TexAgs’ Billy Liucci announced the decision on Sunday morning, just three days after the Board of Regents met last Thursday.

Taking on the interim role for the remainder of the 2023 season, associate head coach/defensive line coach Elijah Robinson, who has more than earned a shot at the position, should be considered during Texas A&M Athletic Director Ross Bjork’s search as the decision could be made in just over two weeks time.

So far this week, nearly every coach I recently listed as a potential candidate has responded to various members of the press regarding the job, including Oregon head coach Dan Lanning, Washington’s Kalen DeBoer, and Duke head coach Mike Elko, who are all likely near, or at the top of Bjork’s list.

Here is what some of those coaches had to say about the Texas A&M head coaching postion.

Here are five Texas A&M head coach candidates to replace Jimbo Fisher

Here are the five head coach candidates to take over at Texas A&M after Jimbo Fisher was officially let go on Sunday, Nov. 12.

As of Sunday, Nov. 12, Texas A&M has officially fired head coach Jimbo Fisher after six seasons at the helm, finishing with a 45-25 record, including a dismal 27-21 SEC record. As a shock to many, TexAgs’ Billy Liucci announced the move on Sunday morning, just three days after the Board of Regents met last Thursday.

Taking over in the interim role, long-time associate head coach Elijah Robinson will fill said role, and honestly, there couldn’t have been a better short-term option. So, with the news hitting us in the face less than 24 hours after the Aggie’s 51-10 win over Mississippi State, it’s time to look toward the future.

With plenty of coaching options paired with the fact that Texas A&M is willing to pay Fisher’s over $76.8 million buyout to move on, money is no issue during the head coaching search.

While every fan and media member on the planet has their list, the Aggies likely have their man in mind, but nevertheless, I have my realistic options. Here are five Texas A&M head coach candidates to replace Jimbo Fisher.

Washington coach Kalen DeBoer breaks down top-10 matchup vs. Oregon

Washington coach Kalen DeBoer breaks down top-10 matchup vs. Oregon

Washington coach, as well as Oregon’s own Dan Lanning, know how important this game and the rivalry is between the two teams. If they didn’t know it before last season’s game, they certainly know it now.

Both coaches are in their second years at their programs and for DeBoer, the rebuilding process was a little more daunting than in Eugene. But he says he’s happy with the giant progress the Huskies have made and they’ll ready to go on Saturday.

“The thing for us is that we wanted to make sure that this weekend was big,” DeBoer said in his weekly news conference. “I’m proud of the guys on how they’ve weekly taken care of business. Hopefully you saw this as inevitable that it came to this point. We have a lot of respect for Oregon and what they’ve done with their season.”

The two programs are at a point in time where they mirror each other and for a long time, it hasn’t been that way. It seemed as if one program would have the upper hand on the other, but even down to having problems with too many penalties, the Ducks and Huskies could be considered twins in some respect.

On Saturday, however, the Dawgs will have a tremendous advantage with the game being at Husky Stadium and DeBoer hopes the atmosphere will be the difference.

“I think there is another level (of noise and craziness) and I’m excited to see it this weekend,” he said.

Husky Stadium is certainly one of the loudest football stadiums in the country and rivals Autzen Stadium. But that doesn’t mean the road team doesn’t have a shot. Washington managed to win in Eugene just last year and DeBoer says that win created a belief within his program and is a large part of why they’re at where they’re at now.

“There was a good build-up to that game with a close win over Oregon State and as we’ve building up and winning close games and fighting through some adversity,” DeBoer said. “We were learning about ourselves and how we can get through it. That one (the win over the Ducks) certainly put us over the top in the belief and the trust in what we were doing at that point,”

Washington is 8-0 since that win in Eugene and the Huskies look for their 13th straight win overall, while the Ducks will be trying to halt all of that momentum.

Oregon vs. Washington: ‘Tale of the Tape’ for No. 8 Ducks vs. No. 7 Huskies

Oregon vs. Washington: ‘Tale of the Tape’ for No. 8 Ducks vs. No. 7 Huskies

It’s not often that a matchup is so razor-thin that we need to call in the advanced statistics to see who has the slightest edge. However, in this week’s top-10 showdown between the No. 8 Oregon Ducks and No. 6 Washington Huskies, looking at the basic key statistics that we typically use wasn’t good enough.

It was still a dead-even split on paper.

So with Bo Nix and Michael Penix squaring off on Saturday, and Dan Lanning calling his second game against Kalen DeBoer, we had to dive a bit deeper into the numbers to try and determine which team had the upper hand. This game is up in Seattle, so the Huskies will undoubtedly have an advantage when it comes to the environment, playing in one of the most hostile venues on the West Coast.

ESPN’s College GameDay will be there, and the fanfare will be off the charts as both teams look to step into the role of Pac-12 darlings early in this season with a win.

Here’s a deep dive into the numbers to figure out which potential darling has the edge on paper.
