Patriots announce release of rookie defensive back

The Patriots free up another spot on their roster

The New England Patriots announced the release of rookie free agent cornerback Kaleb Ford-Dement on Friday.

Ford-Dement was one of nine rookie free agents signed by the Patriots back in May. He bounced around at Old Dominion, Washington State and Texas State in college.

His best year came at Texas State when he had 21 tackles, three interceptions and seven pass deflections.

It was always going to be an uphill battle for him in New England given the bevy of talent in the defensive backfield. The depth chart is topped by Christian Gonzalez, Jonathan Jones and Marcus Jones.

There are also versatile players capable of contributing at cornerback and special teams, including guys like Isaiah Bolden and rookie Marcellas Dial Jr.

The Patriots now have two open spots on their roster after releasing Ford-Dement and linebacker Jontrey Hunter on Monday.

Michigan State has offered Old Dominion transfer Kaleb Ford-Dement, who also de-committed from UCLA on Wednesday.

Cornerback Kaleb Ford-Dement announced that he would be leaving Old Dominion and entering his name into the NCAA Transfer Portal back on Jan. 29th. On Feb. 5th, he announced his commitment to UCLA. However, on Wednesday night, Ford-Dement rescinded his commitment from the Bruins and announced shortly thereafter that he has received an offer from MSU Football.

Michigan State will attempt to court Ford-Dement, who is a former 2-star JUCO prospect who played for Kilgore Junior College before heading to Old Dominion.

Ford-Dement was named Second Team All-Conference USA after recording 26 tackles and 2 interceptions for Old Dominion in 2019 while also setting the team record for most pass breakups in a season with 13. He was named to the Jim Thorpe Award Watchlist before the 2020 season, which Old Dominion opted not to participate in.

Ford-Dement is 5’11”, 180-pounds and from Whitehouse, Texas.
