Renfro no longer on Arkansas football roster

Arkansas quarterback Kade Renfro is no longer on the football team, the university confirmed on Thursday.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock or refuse to look at social media, you’ve undoubtedly become aware that some posts went viral late Wednesday evening regarding now former Arkansas quarterback Kade Renfro.

On Thursday, the Arkansas football program removed him from its 2023 roster.

Renfro, who originally played at Ole Miss, was signed prior to the 2021 season and hasn’t played in either of the last two football campaigns because of knee problems.

The university said it became aware of unspecified allegations against an unidentified player. It’s unclear when the allleged wrongdoing came to university awareness.

It will be a very interesting next month or so, that’s safe to say.

Razorbacks football loses a second player to torn ACL

Arkansas quarterback Kade Renfro will miss rest of 2022 after tearing his ACL.

Kade Renfro was competing for the back-up job to KJ Jefferson before a knee injury sidelined him in December. Now the Ole Miss transfer has suffered another setback.

Renfro, a walk-on who has yet to play for Arkansas, had season-ending surgery earlier in the week after tearing his ACL shortly after he had rehabilitated the initial injury. His timetable for return is unclear.

Coach Sam Pittman announced Monday that last year’s starting running back, Dominique Johnson, was lost for the rest of the season after re-injuring his hurt knee from December, too, also with a torn ACL. Pittman said Johnson should be ready for fall camp in 2023. Renfro would likely be on a similar timetable.

Pittman had announced earlier in the fall that last year’s starting cornerback LaDarrius Bishop would also miss the 2022 season with an injured knee.

Renfro began his college career at Ole Miss on scholarship before transferring to Arkansas last year to play as a walk-on.

Arkansas quarterback situation takes a big hit

An ACL injury has given Arkansas’ depth at quarterback a significant blow.

KJ Jefferson is the unquestioned starting quarterback at Arkansas. But, as mentioned last week, having a heady back-up is awfully important, too.

The Razorbacks were getting extra work in for their reserves during the extra practices the bowl game allows and one of Jefferson’s back-ups was lost for the next several months.

Ole Miss transfer Kade Renfro damaged his anterior cruciate ligament and will miss a bulk of the next year, coach Sam Pittman said on Monday.

“Renfro just planted and a non-contact injury when he planted,” Pittman said. “He’ll be out. He had some ACL. He’ll be out for a while. I hated it for him. Just planted and gave way on him.”

Renfro would have been in contention for the No. 2 spot behind Jefferson in the spring. And while Pittman didn’t give an exact timetable for Renfro’s return, fall camp would likely be the earliest possible date he could be back on the field.

Freshman Malik Hornsby, who spent the season as the top back-up at the spot, will likely keep it for the Outback Bowl against Penn State. Come spring, freshman Lucas Coley will be his primary competition.

Renfro spent one season at Ole Miss and did not play before transferring to Arkansas. He also spent practice time at wide receiver, but as a pocket-passer, he brought an element neither Jefferson or Hornsby, who are both more dual-threat types, could.
