Browns waive embattled ex-Chiefs WR after epic Week 14 blunder

The Cleveland #Browns waived a former Kansas City #Chiefs WR on Sunday after he made a hilarious mistake in Week 14.

According to a report by NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Cleveland Browns are releasing former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney.

The Brown initially signed Toney to their practice squad on September 9 after he was released by the Chiefs on August 27. Toney was elevated to Cleveland’s active roster in Week 14, but failed to make a positive impact in his Browns debut.

In Kansas City, Toney is mostly remembered for his legendary punt return in Super Bowl LVII that helped propel the Chiefs to victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.

On Sunday, Toney muffed a punt in Cleveland’s Week 14 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, which may have played into the Browns’ decision to waive him.

The former Florida Gator struggled with drops during his tenure in Kansas City but is a terrifically talented wideout with all the physical tools scouts look for in elite playmakers.

Stay tuned to see if general manager Brett Veach will decide to kick the tires on Toney later this season if the Chiefs find themselves in need of another pass-catcher due to injuries.

Kadarius Toney made hilarious mistake in Browns’ Week 14 loss to Steelers

Former Kansas City #Chiefs WR Kadarius Toney made a hilarious mistake in the Cleveland Browns’ Week 14 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Kansas City Chiefs parted ways with polarizing wide receiver Karadius Toney in August, and it took a while for the former Florida Gator to catch on with a new team in the regular season.

Toney struggled with drops during his time in Kansas City, and was a generally inconsistent—albeit undeniably talented—presence in the Chiefs receiving corps during the team’s back-to-back Super Bowl runs in 2022 and 2023.

He signed with the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad on September 9, and saw his first action of the season in Week 14 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Unfortunately, his Browns debut took a turn for the worse when Toney muffed a punt in hilarious fashion:

Fans in Kansas City are sure to be glad that Toney isn’t making mistakes like this as a member of the Chiefs’ roster, and with any luck, the defending Super Bowl champions may benefit from Toney’s butterfingers when they face Cleveland on December 15.

Kadarius Toney ruined the Browns’ effort against the Steelers despite barely playing

Kadarius Toney is the funniest player in the NFL.

These days, any hope the mistake-prone Kadarius Toney has at salvaging his NFL career feels more imaginary than feasible. In his latest reclamation opportunity with the Cleveland Browns, Toney showed the entire league why he’s still a player who can’t be trusted during a matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.

As the Browns tried to mount a futile comeback against their AFC North rivals, they gave Toney two whole snaps in the fourth quarter, both on special teams. He proceeded to get a taunting penalty after a fair catch on a punt (c’mon, man). Later, he muffed a punt that effectively ended the game in a 27-14 Steelers win. (C’MON, MAN.)

That’s an incredible hit rate on comical mistakes in a game where you barely played:

If there is a funnier player in the NFL than Toney, I’m not aware of them. Toney is somehow still getting opportunities at the highest level of football, and he’s just wasting them.

Browns sign mercurial ex-Chiefs WR ahead of Week 14 matchup vs. Steelers

The Cleveland #Browns signed a polarizing ex-Chiefs WR ahead of their Week 14 matchup against the Pittsburgh #Steelers.

The Cleveland Browns signed former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney on Saturday ahead of their Week 14 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Toney, who won back-to-back title with the Chiefs in 2022 and 2023, was an inconsistent contributor to Kansas City’s offense and was cut by the defending Super Bowl champions after training camp on August 27.

Though it is unclear what role—if any—Toney will play for the Browns on Sunday, his presence indicates that Cleveland is willing to take a chance on his outstanding upside despite his struggles with drops and miscues that cost him the chance to compete for another ring with the Chiefs this season.

Fans in Kansas City should keep a close eye on Toney tomorrow to see if the former Florida Gator standout has cleaned up his game, or if he still needs some time to get back to the fundamentals with his new team.

Browns player picked up off waivers by Seahawks

Recently waived Cleveland Browns returner Jaelon Darden was claimed by the Seattle Seahawks.

Recently waived Cleveland Browns receiver Jaelon Darden was claimed by the Seattle Seahawks.

Darden has played for the Browns for the past two seasons. He was the Browns’ primary returner this season. Darden returned 22 punts for 234 yards, and four kick returns for 97 yards this season.

Darden was an adequate returner for the Browns. He had a penchant for running across the field instead of up the field. Darden was aggressive in his returns lately. The Browns’ special team unit has played poorly all season.

The Browns do not have a reliable backup at the position. The Browns signed former first-round-pick Kadarius Toney to their practice squad. Toney has played two games for the Browns this season but hasn’t played on special teams.

Special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone told reporters that Toney would factor in as a return man. He has returned 27 punts and zero kickoffs in his career. The Browns will test out the dynamic playmaker at returner for the rest of the season.

Browns elevate volatile and controversial former first round pick from practice squad

Wide receiver Kadarius Toney will suit up for the Browns for the first time.

As the Cleveland Browns get set to take on the New Orleans Saints in Week 11, they have elevated wide receiver Kadarius Toney from the practice squad.

This game against the Saints will be Toney’s first time dressing in a Browns uniform.

Toney, a former first round pick of the New York Giants, was quickly shipped out after just one season to the Kansas City Chiefs. Even with quarterback Patrick Mahomes and a winning culture, Toney was unable to find any success, routinely known for making costly plays offensively.

In four years, Toney only managed to rack up 760 yards and three touchdowns between the Giants and Chiefs. He did add another touchdown on a manufactured rushing attempt.

For the Browns, however, they have a pretty firm trio of receivers who have produced since turning the keys over to quarterback Jameis Winston. If anything, Toney will be used as a return specialist on Sunday against the Saints.

Can the former first rounder make an impact in his first opportunity with the Browns?

Chiefs HC Andy Reid explains his philosophy for making deals at the trade deadline

Kansas City #Chiefs head coach Andy Reid explains his philosophy for making deals at the trade deadline | @EdEastonJr

In the past few seasons, the Kansas City Chiefs front office has been busy making trade deadline moves to prepare for the postseason run.

During his weekly Monday Zoom press conference, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid explained his mindset regarding trade deadline moves to help improve the roster.

“Yeah, it would depend on who the guy is. I mean, that’s the obvious. If he’s got experience in the offense, and it’s not too bad.” said Reid. “But it takes, it takes somebody a little bit of time to get himself involved and get the terminology down, but it’s a lot easier now than it is during training camp, and they have to learn a kazillion plays here they just have the game week to learn and getting on the same page with the quarterback and the timing and all that. That’s a bigger issue normally.”

In past seasons, the Chiefs have acquired wide receivers at the deadline, including Kadarius Toney and the reacquisition of Mecole Hardman last season. Following those trades, Kansas City went on Super Bowl-winning runs, showing that it is a potential strategy this year.

Browns sign former first round pick to the practice squad

The Browns have added another receiver to the practice squad.

The Cleveland Browns are signing back-to-back Super Bowl champion Kadarius Toney to their practice squad.

NFL Insider Jordan Schultz was the first to break news of the signing after the wide receiver came in for a workout last week. Toney is expected to remain on the practice squad for at least the first couple of weeks to learn the playbook and get himself ready for live action. Do not be surprised if he is on Clevelands’ active roster before the end of September.

The former first-round pick last played for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2023 and managed to collect 27 catches and 169 yards in 13 games. While Toney is in a slump in his career, the Browns see value in bringing in the 25-year-old wideout and giving him opportunities to earn playing time.

Though we do not know the details of his contract yet, it is reportedly fully guaranteed. After David Bell was released from the team’s active roster last week and replaced by Jaelon Darden, it is evident that the Browns are aiming to upgrade their lower-tiered pass catchers.

We’ll see if Kadarius Toney can make an impression on the practice squad and earn his way to the active roster soon.

Browns sign controversial ex-Chiefs WR after embarrassing Week 1 loss to Cowboys

The Cleveland #Browns signed former Kansas City #Chiefs WR Kadarius Toney after their brutal loss to the Dallas #Cowboys in Week 1.

The Cleveland Browns signed former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney on Monday after their embarrassing 33-17 loss to the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1.

Toney, a fourth-year player who was a member of Kansas City’s last two Super Bowl rosters, is a dynamic but wildly inconsistent talent who will be a boom-or-bust acquisition for the lowly Browns.

Known for his inexplicable struggles with drops last season, Toney is set to get a fresh start on Cleveland’s practice squad, where he will fight for a chance to be elevated to the Browns’ active roster.

Cleveland’s offense was in total disarray against Dallas, and Toney’s signing with the Browns is interesting, given his erratic performance with the Chiefs.

During his five starts over two regular seasons in Kansas City, Toney made 41 catches for 340 yards and scored three touchdowns.

News of his acquisition by the Browns was far from the most concerning storyline coming out of Cleveland on Monday, and for now, it seems like the team is in an absolute free-fall.

Former Florida WR Kadarius Toney signs with Cleveland Browns

Former Florida Gators wide receiver and 2021 first-round pick Kadarius Toney is joining the Cleveland Browns practice squad, per NFL Network.

The Cleveland Browns are signing former Florida Gators wide receiver [autotag]Kadarius Toney[/autotag] to the practice squad, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport.

The 2021 first-round played a season and a half with the New York Giants before being traded to the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs released him ahead of the 2024 regular season.

Most consider Toney a first-round bust, but that didn’t keep needy teams from reaching out. He’d been meeting with teams in recent weeks. The Seattle Seahawks also hosted him, per the report, and he had more visits lined up.

Winding up on the practice squad isn’t ideal for a guy who was once viewed as a dangerous weapon for any NFL offense, but Toney hasn’t produced strong results since his rookie year.

Kadarius Toney since leaving Florida

Toney finished his college career with 2,641 all-purpose yards (69.5 average) over 38 games played at Florida. He caught 120 passes for 1,590 yards and 12 touchdowns and rushed for 580 yards and two more touchdowns as a Gator.

He was a key piece in Florida’s last New Year’s Six Bowl team, along with quarterback Kyle Trask and tight end Kyle Pitts in 2020.

As a rookie in the NFL, Toney showed flashes of being a playmaker, finishing the year with 39 receptions for 420 yards and no touchdowns. However, he only played in 10 games due to several different injuries.

That’s when the off-the-field issues began. Toney missed the first three weeks of voluntary workouts with trade rumors flying. Once he showed up to offseason workouts, he quickly was sidelined after undergoing knee surgery. Fall camp was also marred by injury — a hamstring issue that returned during Week 2 of the regular season.

The mid-season trade allowed Toney to return to the field with a much better offense around him. He quickly delivered the best performance of his career — six touches, 90 all-purpose yards and a touchdown — but his hamstring gave out against the following week.

There’s no doubt that Toney has talent, but he’s been injury-prone for most of his career and can be a difficult player to manage when things aren’t going well. After performing at replacement level in 2023 with Kansas City, it’s going to take some serious work with the practice squad for Cleveland to elevate him.
