Hugh Freeze shares thoughts on the enhancement of receiver room

The Tigers needed a boost to its receiving corps, and got just that from the transfer portal.

The position group with the most buzz this fall camp is quarterback. However, a quarterback is only as good as his supporting cast.

In addition to enhancing the quarterback room by adding [autotag]Payton Thorne[/autotag] from Michigan State, [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] boosted his offensive line and receiving corps.

Auburn failed to have a receiver reach 500 yards last season and the last receiver to come close to a 1,000-yard season was [autotag]Darvin Adams[/autotag] in 2009 when he reeled in 60 catches for 997 yards.

As someone who is known for having solid receivers, Freeze knew that he needed to upgrade his receiver room for his team to reach its true potential.

“We needed to overhaul that room and improve it for sure,” Freeze said Thursday. “I say that and truthfully I don’t know, the evaluation sample was so small for most of them because this system is totally different than what they’ve played in.”

Javarrius Johnson returns as the Tigers’ leading receiver after reeling in 26 catches for 493 yards and three scores last season. [autotag]Koy Moore[/autotag] is back, as are several tight end options such as [autotag]Brandon Frazier[/autotag], [autotag]Tyler Fromm[/autotag], and [autotag]Luke Deal[/autotag].

Freeze enhanced the group by adding [autotag]Shane Hooks[/autotag] and [autotag]Jyaire Shorter[/autotag], who were Jackson State and North Texas’ leading receivers last season respectively. He also grabbed a tall target in [autotag]Nick Mardner[/autotag], as well as another tight end in [autotag]Rivaldo Fairweather[/autotag].

The potential is there, but it is time now for them to prove it on the field.

“I do think we’ve improved that room in recruiting, and I do think there are guys here that can be better than what they’ve shown,” Freeze said. “We’re excited to see, I think we’ve seen glimpses of that but now we’ve got to go and do it when it’s real and live. But we are excited about the fact that I think we’ve improved that room for sure.”

The receivers, as well as the offensive line, will use this two-week period of fall camp to prove that they are worthy of a starting position.

Hugh Freeze shares positive injury report as team begins fall camp

According to Freeze, two key transfers are practicing after sustaining foot injuries.

As the Auburn Tigers head into fall camp this week, head coach [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] provided an injury report just before his team hit the practice field on Thursday.

Two key transfers were questionable heading into camp, but Freeze says that both [autotag]Brian Battie[/autotag] and [autotag]Jyaire Shorter[/autotag] will battle through their injury in an effort to compete during the three-week period.

Battie had surgery following A-Day to repair a broken bone in his right foot. Recovery time was expected to be eight weeks, but he is ahead of schedule Freeze says.

“Battie is limited but will practice from his, he had the procedure done on his foot,” Freeze said Thursday. “Shoot, I think that’s it. I think we’re blessed. There may be a few more that are somewhat limited, but I think everybody will be out there today.”

Shorter, a wide receiver from North Texas, has had a history of injury as well. Last season, he underwent surgery to repair a broken bone in his foot. He also missed time during the 2020 season due to a broken ankle. Freeze tells the media that Shorter is being monitored, but is clear to practice.

Auburn football will continue fall camp through Saturday, Aug. 19. The 2023 season will begin Saturday, Sept. 2 against UMass at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Hugh Freeze updates status of Daquayvious Sorey

He signed with Auburn back in December but it no longer looks like he will be joining the team.

[autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] spoke at SEC Media Days on Tuesday and he provided an update on wide receiver [autotag]Daquayvious Sorey[/autotag], who no longer appears set to join the program.

Freeze expressed optimism that JUCO defensive lineman Quientrail Jamison-Travis would be able to join the team for the season before telling reporters “not quite as much (confidence) about Sorey.”

Sorey was Auburn’s only high school wide receiver in the class and signed with the program back in December. The three-star prospect now appears to be taking the JUCO route, adding #JUCOPRODUCT to his Instagram bio.

He was ranked as the No. 471 overall player and No. 63 wide receiver in the 247Sports Composite ranking. The Campbellton, Florida product was also the No. 85 player from The Sunshine State.

While he was Auburn’s only high school signee they also added four receivers out of the transfer portal in [autotag]Nick Mardner[/autotag], [autotag]Shane Hooks[/autotag], [autotag]Jyaire Shorter[/autotag] and [autotag]Caleb Burton[/autotag].

Johnson Jr. has plenty of potential due to his speed and size but has been hampered by injuries during his time at Auburn.

If he can stay healthy then he has the ability to vault up the depth chart but right now he is behind [autotag]Koy Moore[/autotag] and [autotag]Jyaire Shorter[/autotag] at the Wide Receiver-Z spot and is set to be a reserve

Depth Chart Overview

Shorter was a big-play machine for North Texas but has battled injuries throughout his career. He has the ability to take the top off the defense and that is something that Auburn has been sorely lacking over the past few seasons. He has shown a knack for finding the endzone as well, with 34.5% of his catches going for touchdowns.

He is battling [autotag]Koy Moore[/autotag] to be the starting wide receiver-Z. Moore is a returning contributor and has multiple years of SEC experience so I expect him to win the job to start but both players will have key roles and Shorter’s explosiveness will be too important and he will take over as the starter during the season.

Jersey numbers for spring transfers unveiled

Here’s a look at what number each of Auburn’s eight spring transfers will wear this fall.

After finding success in the first window of the transfer portal window, [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] and his staff continued to work to fill needs for their team in the spring portion.

As part of their spring transfer haul, Auburn gained support at wide receiver, jack linebacker, offensive line, and quarterback. [autotag]Payton Thorne[/autotag] headlines the spring additions, as Freeze now has a worthy quarterback to compete with [autotag]Robby Ashford[/autotag] for the starting QB1 job.

Whoever wins the quarterback battle will also have more options to throw to thanks to the addition of three wide receivers in [autotag]Shane Hooks[/autotag], [autotag]Jyaire Shorter[/autotag], and [autotag]Caleb Burton[/autotag].

Defensively, the biggest position Auburn needed to fill was JACK linebacker. In the winter window, Auburn added [autotag]Elijah McAllister[/autotag] from Vanderbilt to build depth. However, Dylan Brooks elected to leave the program, which left more room to fill. The Tigers received assistance, however, by landing [autotag]Jalen McLeod[/autotag] from Appalachian State and [autotag]Stephen Sings[/autotag] from Liberty.

At linebacker, Auburn gains [autotag]Larry Nixon III[/autotag]. Nixon was the second-leading tackler at North Texas last season with 105 total stops and was named first-team All-Conference USA.

On3 Roundtable highlights Auburn’s playmakers at wide receiver

Who will be the Tigers’ top receiving targets in 2023?

The 2023 edition of the Auburn Tigers will look vastly different.

Auburn’s offense will see notable changes at offensive line and wide receiver. The latter position group was discussed on a recent episode of The On3 Roundtable.

Host J.D. PicKell welcomed Auburn Live’s Justin Hokanson to chat about the Tigers last week. Auburn will have several new faces lining up to catch passes from either [autotag]Robby Ashford[/autotag] or [autotag]Payton Thorne[/autotag] this season thanks to the transfer portal. Players such as [autotag]Jyaire Shorter[/autotag], [autotag]Shane Hooks[/autotag], and [autotag]Nick Mardner[/autotag] will be tall targets for Auburn’s quarterbacks, but the one transfer receiver that Hokanson is most looking forward to watching is FIU transfer [autotag]Rivaldo Fairweather[/autotag].

Fairweather comes to Auburn after reeling in 28 catches for 426 yards and three touchdowns last season at FIU and is poised to help out the Tigers at tight end.

He’s only played football for four or five years of his life, but played basketball, played soccer in high school, super athletic and super raw,” Hokanson said. “That kid’s got NFL potential written all over him. He’s going to be really interesting to see. Is he involved in just the red zone or is he involved all the way up and down the field? He’s a guy that’s going to be a big target.”

Outside of the new transfers, Auburn’s leading receiver from a season ago returns to the roster.

[autotag]Ja’Varrius Johnson[/autotag] caught 26 passes for 493 yards last season for the Tigers. Hokanson believes that Auburn’s fresh receivers will provide relief to Johnson.

“I think there’s a lot to be determined. I don’t know that there will be a premier pass catcher,” Hokanson said. “I feel like you’ve got some guys that can maybe turn into reliable guys across the board but I would probably start with those four.”

According to Pro Football Focus, three of Auburn’s top offensive players reside in the receiving corps.

Jyaire Shorter included in College Sports Wire’s best SEC wide receivers list

Auburn secured several wide receivers from the transfer portal, and the former North Texas star is set to make an immediate impact.

Auburn will have a completely revamped offensive unit in 2023, as [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] performed a complete overhaul by using talent from the transfer portal.

One of the most talented additions to Auburn’s receiving unit is North Texas transfer [autotag]Jyaire Shorter[/autotag]. Shorter announced his transfer to Auburn the same day as fellow North Texas product, linebacker [autotag]Larry Nixon III[/autotag], shared his intention to also transfer to Auburn. Shorter joins [autotag]Caleb Burton[/autotag] and [autotag]Nick Mardner[/autotag] as new wide receivers to the squad, and one college football analyst feels that he can become one of the SEC’s leading receivers by season’s end.

In his initial SEC wide receiver rankings, College Sports Wire’s Patrick Conn listed Shorter as the No. 12 wide receiver in the conference. Conn feels that Shorter and quarterback [autotag]Payton Thorne[/autotag] will team up to create explosive plays for Auburn this season.

If you want explosive plays, keep your eyes on Jyaire Shorter of Auburn. He joins a team in desperate need of big plays on the offensive side of the ball. Shorter should be a big play threat with plenty of those explosive plays, as long as Robby Ashford isn’t the one throwing the ball.

Shorter snagged 23 passes for 628 yards and 11 touchdowns last season for the Mean Green. His 11 touchdowns led the team last season, with the next closest receiver only snagging five. He has a total of 58 catches for 1,1,320 yards and 20 touchdowns ahead of his final eligible season in 2023.

Mike Farrell talks Auburn’s ‘interesting’ additions of Jalen McLeod and Larry Nixon III

The College Football analyst is intrigued by Auburn’s LB additions from the transfer portal, and is interested to see how they pan out on the Plains.

When it comes to the transfer portal, Auburn football had just as much success in the spring window as it did in the winter by reeling in seven more players which included two linebackers.

Mike Farrell recently spent time breaking down transfer linebackers, and has listed Auburn’s additions of [autotag]Larry Nixon III[/autotag] from North Texas and [autotag]Jalen McLeod[/autotag] from Appalachian State as “interesting moves.”

Farrell released his choices for the top five interesting linebacker moves of the spring transfer window and has included Nixon and McLeod in the mix. Starting with Nixon, Farrell says that he will have plenty of opportunities to earn playing time this season.

Having totaled 245 tackles, 11.5 tackles for a loss and 6.5 sacks during his time with North Texas, Nixon now brings his productive experience to Auburn. He is part of a revamped linebacking group, being the fourth added by the Tigers during this cycle. While [autotag]Cam Riley[/autotag] and [autotag]Wesley Steiner[/autotag] are also important returnees at the position, there is plenty of opportunity to earn playing time this fall.

He then mentions McLeod by saying that his production at Appalachian State will provide a quick boost to the position.

McLeod arrives at Auburn in a similar situation as the above-mentioned Larry Nixon. Coming off a season when he finished with 7.5 tackles for a loss and six sacks, his production and playmaking ability will be an immediate valuable asset for the Tigers. However, just like Nixon, he will have to battle with several returning players and other transfers for playing time which will make summer camp very interesting at the position.

Nixon and McLeod are among the seven valuable additions to Auburn’s roster from the spring window of the portal. Quarterback [autotag]Payton Thorne[/autotag], offensive lineman [autotag]Jaden Muskrat[/autotag], and wide receiver [autotag]Jyaire Shorter[/autotag] brings Auburn’s transfer haul to 21 total members, which is second in the nation behind Colorado.

Auburn named a spring transfer portal winner

The Tigers have added eight transfers during the spring window, including quarterback Payton Thorne.

[autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] inherited a roster that needed a massive injection of talent if the Auburn Tigers were going to compete in the SEC in his first year on the Plains.

Well, he went out and got the talent and on Thursday the Tigers were named a winner of the spring transfer portal by Ralph D. Russo of the Associated Press.

Auburn has brought in quarterback [autotag]Payton Thorne[/autotag] (Michigan State) and wide receivers [autotag]Shane Hooks[/autotag] (Jackson State), [autotag]Caleb Burton[/autotag] (Ohio State) and [autotag]Jyaire Shorter[/autotag] (North Texas) to fix a passing attack that was one of the worst in the SEC last season.

While Thorne struggled last season, Russo points out that his 19 touchdown passes were over double the nine that Auburn managed.

The Tigers also added offensive lineman [autotag]Jaden Muskrat[/autotag], who started for offensive coordinator [autotag]Philip Montgomery[/autotag] at Tulsa last season.

It wasn’t just the offense that got reinforcements though, they added linebackers [autotag]Jalen McLeod[/autotag] (App State) and [autotag]Larry Nixon III[/autotag] (North Texas) and defensive end [autotag]Stephen Sings V[/autotag] (Liberty) to shore up the front seven on defense.

McLeod and Sings are both expected to help rush the passer at the Jack linebacker spot as defensive coordinator [autotag]Rob Roberts[/autotag] looks to create more “havoc” plays.

Nixon, who made 105 tackles last season, will help shore up the middle of the defense.
