Former Penn State wide receiver Cam Sullivan-Brown enters transfer portal

After not appearing on the spring roster, another Penn State receiver is reportedly in the transfer portal.

After not appearing on the team’s roster for the spring, it had been speculated that wide receiver [autotag]Cam Sullivan-Brown[/autotag] had played his last game with the Nittany Lions. And that indeed appears to be the case as Sullivan-Brown has reportedly entered the transfer portal.

According to 247Sports, Sullivan-Brown entered the transfer portal on Wednesday. By entering the transfer portal, Sullivan-Brown is free to have contact with any program that may be interested in adding the veteran wide receiver to their roster. Sullivan-Brown will have one final year of eligibility to use, which was granted to every student-athlete as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic wrecking havoc on the sports calendar in 2020.

Sullivan-Brown was among the handful of players that were notably absent from Penn State’s spring roster. After playing five years for the Nittany Lions (Sullivan-Brown redshirted as a freshman), all tat was left to determine was whether or not he would continue playing football for another program or not.

Sullivan-Brown appeared in 38 games for Penn State, in which he recorded 17 catches for 163 yards. The super senior will be eligible right away to play in 2022 wherever he may end up.

Sullivan-Brown is the fourth wide receiver from Penn State to enter the transfer portal this offseason. [autotag]Norval Black[/autotag], [autotag]Justin Weller[/autotag], and [autotag]Daniel George[/autotag] all entered the transfer portal previously. As of now, none of the other three have confirmed a transfer detsination. Penn State has also added to its receiver position through the transfer portal with the addition of [autotag]Mitchell Tinsley[/autotag] from Western Kentucky.

Former Penn State receiver announces transfer destination

Former Penn State reserve wide receiver has announced his transfer destination.

It feels as though it has been a while since we had much to talk about with the transfer portal, but today is a new day and we have a fresh update on the plans for a former Penn State football player.

Justin Weller, who jumped into the transfer portal in January, announced on his Twitter account he has committed to Long Island University.

Weller was a member of Penn State’s Class of 2017. After redshirting as a true freshman, Weller appeared in one game each in 2018, 2019, and 2020. Weller got into nine games during the 2021 season but did not record any all-purpose stats while playing on special teams duty and as a deep offensive reserve. Weller will have one final year of collegiate eligibility at his disposal with his new program.

Penn State receiver lands in NCAA transfer portal

Penn State wide receiver enters transfer portal with one year of eligibility remaining

The beginning of the new calendar year is reviving some transfer portal activity around the Penn State program. On the same day Penn State had a defensive lineman enter his name in the transfer portal, a wide receiver has done the same. Justin Weller announced on his Twitter account on Monday that he had entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal database.

“Thank you to everyone at Penn State,” Weller said in his Twitter post. “These last [five] years have been unforgettable. With [one] year of eligibility left, I have decided to enter the transfer portal.”

As noted by Weller in his announcement, he will have one final year of collegiate eligibility at his disposal.

As a reminder, a player entering the transfer portal does not guarantee that player will leave for another school. Any player may withdraw their name from the transfer portal and stay where they are. This move is not unprecedented, although a good percentage of players do eventually move on to another school once exploring their options in the transfer portal.

Weller is the second wide receiver from Penn State to enter the transfer portal this offseason. Norval Black also entered the transfer portal in mid-December 2021. Black has yet to confirm his transfer portal decision at this time.

Penn State has also added a wide receiver through the transfer portal with the addition of former Western Kentucky receiver Mitchell Tinsley. Tinsley is expected to make a smooth transition into the Penn State offense, which will already be returning Parker Washington and KeAndre Lambert-Smith as the top two-leading receivers returning in 2022 barring any unforeseen changes.

Here are all 32 football players being recognized on Penn State’s senior day

Sean Clifford, Jahan Dotson, Jaquan Brisker, Journey Brown among those being honored at Penn State’s senior day

Penn State will play its final game in Beaver Stadium for the 2021 season on Saturday afternoon against Rutgers. And with this being the final home game of the season, it is the final opportunity for 32 players to step foot on the field inside Beaver Stadium for a game. Penn State will recognize 32 players for senior day festivities prior to kicking off against Rutgers on Saturday.

Of course, this is a slightly different type of senior day. Of the 32 players being recognized on Saturday afternoon, three players will be going through the senior day ceremony for a second time. Jaquan Brisker, Tariq Castro-Fields, and Ben Wilson were all recognized in Penn State’s senior day ceremony last season, but the NCAA allowed all players to take advantage of an extra year of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on the entire sports world. So those three players opted for one more season in Happy Valley.

Of note, Penn State will recognize Sean Clifford, who could still potentially return for another season in 2022 (also a result of the NCAA’s decision on extra years of eligibility for all). Clifford isn’t the only player who can take advantage of that option, but there remains plenty of discussion on whether or not Clifford will return for another season.

Clifford’s top receiving target, Jahan Dotson, will also be recognized. Although Dotson could return for another season as well, there is no suggestion he will do so. Dotson is expected to be one of the top wide receiver prospects in the 2022 NFL draft, and some believe he could be a first-round pick.

Penn State will also recognize Journey Brown. Brown was forced to medically retire prior to the 2020 season after learning of a health concern that made continuing playing football a risky endeavor.

Here is the full list of players Penn State will honor during the senior day, as provided by Penn State’s athletics department;

  • Jaquan Brisker
  • Ellis Brooks
  • Journey Brown
  • Tariq Castro-Fields
  • Rafael Checa
  • Max Chizmar
  • Sean Clifford
  • Jahan Dotson

2021 Penn State Nittany Lions Profile Card: Justin Weller

Redshirt senior receiver Justin Weller is one of the players helping Penn State you probably didn’t know about

Name: Justin Weller

Number: 80

Position: Wide receiver

Class: Redshirt senior

Height: 6′-0″

Weight: 195

Hometown: Sinking Spring, PA

High School: Wilson

Twitter: @JustinWeller6

Overview

Justin Weller is entering his final season of Penn State football unless he chooses to take advantage of an extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA for all student-athletes last season. But the redshirt senior will enter 2021 knowing he has accomplished a lot during his time at Penn State. That may not be reflected in the stats, but Wilson has been a key member of the program during his time in Happy Valley.

Weller has been deep on the depth chart, but his work on the practice field has earned him recognition as one of Penn State’s top developmental players, those who help prepare their teammates for the competition they will be facing on Saturday. Hard work during the week is not easy when you don’t necessarily get the spotlight on gameday, but Weller has embraced the mentality that it takes a full team effort to succeed.

Weller has appeared in three games, one each in 2018, 2019, and 2020. He has worked on offense and special teams during his brief time on the field. But he’s been hard at work in the classroom outside of football, earning high marks and Academic All-Big Ten honors three times.

Weller’s dedication to helping Penn State football succeed often goes unnoticed by the fans watching the games, but his efforts are not overlooked within the program. We’ll see if he gets a chance to record some stats in 2021 to end his career with a highlight or two to look back on.
